A non-classical third-order shear deformation plate model is developed using a modified couple stress theory and Hamilton’s principle. The equations of motion and boundary conditions are simultaneously obtained through a variational formulation. This newly developed plate model contains one material length scale parameter and can capture both the size effect and the quadratic variation of shear strains and shear stresses along the plate thickness direction. It is shown that the new third-order shear deformation plate model recovers the non-classical Reddy-Levinson beam model and Mindlin plate model based on the modified couple stress theory as special cases. Also, the current non-classical plate model reduces to the classical elasticity-based third-order shear deformation plate model when the material length scale parameter is taken to be zero. To illustrate the new model, analytical solutions for the static bending and free vibration problems of a simply supported plate are obtained by directly applying the general forms of the governing equations and boundary conditions of the model. The numerical results show that the deflection and rotations predicted by the new plate model are smaller than those predicted by its classical elasticity-based counterpart, while the natural frequency of the plate predicted by the former is higher than that by the latter. It is further seen that the differences between the two sets of predicted values are significant when the plate thickness is small, but they are diminishing with increasing plate thickness.

Based on new modified couple stress theory a model for composite laminated Reddy plate is developed in first time. In this theory a new curvature tensor is defined for establishing the constitutive relations of laminated plate. The characterization of anisotropy is incorporated into higher-order laminated plate theories based on the modified couple stress theory by Yang et al. in 2002. The form of new curvature tensor is asymmetric, however it can result in same as the symmetric curvature tensor in the isotropic elasticity. The present model of thick plate can be viewed as a simplified couple stress theory in engineering mechanics. Moreover, a more simplified model for cross-ply composite laminated Reddy plate of couple stress theory with one material’s length constant is used to demonstrate the scale effects. Numerical results show that the present plate model can capture the scale effects of microstructure. Additionally, the present model of thick plate model can be degenerated to the model of composite cross-ply laminated Kirchhoff plate and Mindlin plate of couple stress theory.

This paper presents a nonlinear size-dependent Timoshenko beam model based on the modified couple stress theory, a non-classical continuum theory capable of capturing the size effects. The nonlinear behavior of the new model is due to the present of induced mid-plane stretching, a prevalent phenomenon in beams with two immovable supports. The Hamilton principle is employed to determine the governing partial differential equations as well as the boundary conditions. A hinged–hinged beam is chosen as an example to delineate the nonlinear size-dependent static and free-vibration behaviors of the derived formulation. The solution for the static bending is obtained numerically. The solution for the free-vibration is presented analytically utilizing the method of multiple scales, one of the perturbation techniques.

The couple stress theory is a non-classical continuum theory which is capable to capture size effects in small-scale structures. This property makes it appropriate for modeling the structures in micron and sub-micron scales. The purpose of this paper is the derivation of the governing motion equations and boundary conditions for the geometrically nonlinear micro-plates with arbitrary shapes based on the modified version of the couple stress theory. The consistent boundary conditions are provided at smooth parts of the plate periphery and also at the sharp corners of the periphery using variational approach.

This communication discusses a 4-node plate bending element for linear elastic analysis which is obtained, as a special case, from a general nonlinear continuum mechanics based 4-node shell element formulation. The formulation of the plate element is presented and the results of various example solutions are given that yield insight into the predictive capability of the plate (and shell) element.

Dynamic stability of microbeams made of functionally graded materials (FGMs) is investigated in this paper based on the modified couple stress theory and Timoshenko beam theory. This non-classical Timoshenko beam model contains a material length scale parameter and can interpret the size effect. The material properties of FGM microbeams are assumed to vary in the thickness direction and are estimated though Mori–Tanaka homogenization technique. The higher-order governing equations and boundary conditions are derived by using the Hamilton’s principle. The differential quadrature (DQ) method is employed to convert the governing differential equations into a linear system of Mathieu–Hill equations from which the boundary points on the unstable regions are determined by Bolotin’s method. Free vibration and static buckling are also discussed as subset problems. A parametric study is conducted to investigate the influences of the length scale parameter, gradient index and length-to-thickness ratio on the dynamic stability characteristics of FGM microbeams with hinged–hinged and clamped–clamped end supports. Results show that the size effect on the dynamic stability characteristics is significant only when the thickness of beam has a similar value to the material length scale parameter.

In this paper, the size-dependent free vibration of magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) nanobeams in thermal environment is investigated. Size effects are taken into account using the modified couple stress theory, which is capable of accounting for higher-order electromechanical coupling, and the equations are developed on the basis of Euler–Bernoulli beam model and using von Karman nonlinear strain. The vibration of hinged–hinged nanobeams is investigated by way of example. Effects of various parameters such as temperature, thickness, and length on natural frequencies are demonstrated, and it is indicated that increased length and decreased thickness lead to decreased nanobeam natural frequencies.

In this paper, analytical expressions for the quality factor (QF) of thermoelastic damping (TED) applying modified couple stress theory (MCST) are presented for plane stress and strain conditions. For gold and nickel micro-beam resonators, which have a considerable length-scale parameter as case studies, the effect of the length-scale parameter on the QF of TED has been discussed in details. Results for the QF of TED show that when the beam thickness is close to the length-scale parameter of the material, the MCST diverges from the classical theory; otherwise, the two theories converge to each other. Also critical thickness variation due to applying MCST is studied.

In this study, analytical and numerical solution procedures are proposed for vibration of an embedded microbeam under action of a moving microparticle based on the modified couple stress theory (MCST) within the framework of Euler–Bernoulli beam theory. The governing equation and the related boundary conditions are derived by using Hamilton’s principle. The closed form solution of the transverse deflections of the embedded microbeam is obtained using the finite Fourier sine transformation. In the numerical solution, the dynamic deflections are computed by using the Lagrange’s equations in conjunction with the direct integration method of Newmark. The static deflections are also obtained analytically. A detailed parametric study is conducted to study the influences of the material length scale parameter, the Poisson’s ratio, the velocity of the microparticle and the elastic medium constant as well as the solution procedures on the dynamic responses of the microbeam. For comparison purpose, static deflections and free vibration frequencies of the microbeam are obtained and compared with previously published studies. Good agreement is observed. The results show that the above mentioned effects play an important role on the dynamic behavior of the microbeam.

In this article, based on the global-local theory, a model for a composite laminated Reddy plate of new modified couple-stress theory is developed for the first time. This model satisfies free surface conditions and the geometric and stresses continuity conditions at interfaces. Differing from existing modified couple-stress theory, an anisotropic constitutive relation is suggested. There is only one micro material characteristic length constant in each layer of the composite laminated plate. Principle of virtual work is employed to derive the equilibrium equations and the corresponding boundary conditions. With the example of a cross-ply simple-supported Reddy plate subjected to the bending load q0 = sin?(πx/L)sin?(πy/L), the transverse shear stresses at interfaces are addressed. Additionally, the numerical results show that the present plate model can capture the scale effect, especially the scale effect of the transverse shear stresses at interfaces of the composite laminated plate.

In this paper, the size-dependent vibrational behavior of a microbeam conveying fluid was investigated using the Modified Couple Stress Theory. For cantilever and clamped-clamped microbeams, the small amplitude vibration equation of the micro-beams was solved using a Galerkin based reduced order model and the effects of material length-scale parameter on its natural frequencies were evaluated. It was found that for the both cantilever and clamped-clamped conditions, the critical fluid velocities predicted by the modified couple stress theory are higher than those predicted by the classical beam theory. In addition, the differences between the eigen-frequencies and the critical fluid velocities predicted by the modified couple stress theory and classical beam theory depends on the ratio of the material length-scale parameter to the beam height. In addition an unexpected result in the difference between the first eigen-frequency of the cantilever micro-beam obtained by the classical and the modified couple stress theory has been achieved.

In the present work, the propagation of longitudinal stress waves is investigated using a modified couple stress theory. The analysis of wave motion is based on a Love rod model including the effects of lateral deformation. The present analysis also considers the effect of shear stress components. By applying Hamilton??s principle, the explicit nonlocal elasticity solution is obtained, and the effects of shear stress and length scale parameter are discussed.

This paper investigates the postbuckling analysis of a viscoelastic microbeam embedded in a double layer viscoelastic foundation. This viscoelastic microbeam is modeled using the Kelvin–Voigt model and the modified couple stress theory. A material length scale parameter is utilized to describe the size-dependent behavior of the viscoelastic microbeam. The visco-Pasternak foundation used in this study contains a viscoelastic medium and a shear layer. This microbeam is subjected to an axial compressive load at the beam ends which can change as a function of time. According to the Euler–Bernoulli beam theory and von-Karman nonlinearity, the time-dependent equations of motion are derived by Hamilton’s principle. The nonlinear equations of motion are directly solved under the simply supported boundary condition. Both time-dependent deflection and viscoelastic buckling load are investigated. Finally, the influences of the material length scale parameter, parameters of the visco-Pasternak foundation and the material viscosity coefficient on the dynamic postbuckling response are studied.

The transverse vibration of a rotary tapered microbeam is studied based on a modified couple stress theory and Euler–Bernoulli beam model. The governing differential equation and boundary conditions are derived according to Hamilton's principle. The generalized differential quadrature element method is then used to solve the governing equation for cantilever and propped cantilever boundary conditions. The effect of the small-scale parameter, beam length, rate of cross-section change, hub radius, and nondimensional angular velocity on the vibration behavior of the microbeam is presented.
