This paper considers the architecture of some of the most common types of assistive software, namely, screen readers, full-screen magnifiers, on-screen keyboards, predictors and simulated Braille keyboards. The paper provides an overview of the operation of these applications and then identifies the technologies that may be used to implement assistive applications on a Windows platform. In this paper the concept for a software environment for developing engineering application systems for multiprocessor hardware (MIMD) is presented. The philosophy employed is to solve the largest problems possible in a reasonable amount of time, rather than solve existing problems faster. In the proposed environment most of the problems concerning parallel computation and handling of large distributed data spaces are hidden from the application program developer, thereby facilitating the development of large-scale software applications. Applications developed under the environment can be executed on a variety of MIMD hardware; it protects the application software from the effects of a rapidly changing MIMD hardware technology. 相似文献

The G-EXEC subset, described in terms of data-base management software for third-world geologists, retains all features of the full G-EXEC system including generalization, and system integration. The system is composed of selected programs for input-output operations, data vetting and validation, retrieval, and file manipulation. The role of computers in university-level research activities has been established for two decades. But advances in microprocessor technology coupled with developments in local area networking are opening up a new dimension to university computing, with computers entering the classroom and lecture theatre as routine pedagogic aids.In the United Kingdom, the Computers in Teaching Initiative (CTI) is a national programme designed to promote a greater awareness of the scope of computer assisted teaching in universities. 135 demonstration projects have been established around the country, including one in almost every academic discipline. Projects are usually based in a single university department, and funding is typically about £80,000 spread over two years.This paper draws extensively on the experiences of CTI projects to explore the new opportunities presented by the use of computers in university teaching, and the difficulties and challenges that have yet to be surmounted if we are to utilise effectively the new technology.The UK experience indicates that the most effective use of computers in university teaching goes far beyond the simple acquisition and testing of “knowledge”. Many CTI projects are using computers to enhance other areas of the cognitive domain, using simulation and modelling techniques to promote appreciation, understanding, and synthesis. 相似文献

The acquisition of data from laboratory instruments and the automatic control of experimental apparatus is facilitated by the use of small, inexpensive battery-powered microcomputers ('lap computers'). Useful capabilities and features of currently available lap computers are summarized.
