Energy usage in the form of electricity constitutes a large portion of energy consumption in developed countries. Electric energy is generated from primary energy sources such as coal, nuclear, natural gas, petroleum, hydro, geothermal, etc. The generation, management, and utilization of electric energy is constrained with technological factors, environmental and safety considerations, capital requirements, etc., resulting in limitations of primary energy source utilization. This paper describes an interactive computer program which has been developed to aid the instruction of problems related to primary energy source utilization for the production of electric energy. The computer program has been developed for a graduate course on power system planning. The program can be used to study the major implications of alternative national energy policies, as well as utility originated policies. Examples are load or supply management, dispersed or central storage, dispersed generation, cogeneration, plant conversion, etc. The paper describes the interactive simulation program and associated theory and three examples of computer program utilization.  相似文献

A qualitatively different graduate level curriculum for teaching electric power systems is needed. The motivation for such a new curriculum is outlined, and a specific program, now being implemented at Carnegie Mellon University, is described. The new curriculum: 1) provides students with a multidisciplinary introduction to the changing problems of the industry; 2) stresses the need for teaching systematic approaches to formulating power system problems; and 3) integrates teaching of the fundamentals for power systems with the fundamentals for other network industries. The program, referred to as the MS in Electric Power Systems (MSEPS) Program, is being developed as a special power-focused track within Carnegie Mellon's existing multidisciplinary Information Networking Institute (INI).  相似文献

Interactions with industry hiring new software engineers from undergraduate computer science and engineering programs show, case after case, that universities do not pay enough attention to the practical aspects of software development. Another well-known deficiency of the undergraduate programs is in the area of time-critical, reactive programming. The present paper describes a senior course in a computer science undergraduate program designed to address some of the above problems. The real-time course provides the students not only with the basic concepts of real-time programming, but also provides a vehicle for development of small class projects which address methods, tools and the critical aspects of a modern software development life cycle. The experience with teaching the course may serve as a model for similar offerings in other computer science, computer engineering and software engineering college programs. The popularity, user-friendliness, and accessibility of personal computers encourages their use as powerful computational tools for numerical and graphical aids in the visualization of concepts that may seem abstract to students. Methods are presented for using the Apple MacIntosh computer for the numerical solution and mapping of fields for electrostatics, steady current flow, heat transfer, and source-free magnetostatics problems. The programs are totally menu-driven, consistent with the familiar MacIntosh interface, requiring minimal time on the part of the student to learn how to get into the program and obtain results, yet with enough power and versatility to enable students to do some fairly sophisticated computations if they wish. The program uses a finite-elements method and provides transient as well as steady-state solutions. This software is proving to be a valuable instructional aid in field mapping problems and the computation of capacitance and resistance in a first-level EM course  相似文献

A digital computer program written by Westinghouse engineers aids the design of new static logic systems for metal mills. The computer program accepts logic equations specifying the functions to be performed. The program generates circuit drawings of logic circuitry plus paper tape for controlling an automatic wiring machine. The automatic wiring machine wires the back panel receptacles for plug-in cards which contain the integrated-circuit AND/NAND logic elements. The design engineer determines functional requirements to be performed by the logic circuits. He expresses these requirements in convenient logic statement form and adds comments on circuit functioning. Logic and comment statements are keypunched for input to the computer. The computer analyzes the equations, converts the functions to AND/ NAND logic circuits and generates the punched-paper tape required by the automatic wiring machine. In addition, the computer generates the circuit diagrams showing the actual AND/NAND circuits with complete (JIC) cross references and comments on circuit functioning. During computer processing diagnostic messages are generated to aid in finding design errors. Only one type of logic board is used in the new static logic system to perform all logic functions. This reduces maintenance to mere board replacement and greatly reduces spare board inventory. Triac outputs are featured in addition to normal contact closure outputs. Traic is a static ac switch which can operate pilot-operated solenoid valves, contactors, indicating lights, and other common ac loads. The logic system combines the advantages of fully wired integrated-circuit logic with the convenience and accuracy of computer aided design.  相似文献

This paper describes a set of computer programs used in a teaching unit on numerical solutions of fields embedded in a course on electromagnetic fields and waves. The logical development of various algorithms pertinent to the numerical methods discussed in the course is emphasized. The progression of the program structures is designed to facilitate a variety of tests and experiments related to the theoretical problems discussed in class. The use of the packages in such a teaching unit improves students' comprehension and skills in solving field problems. The programs have been written in standard Fortran.  相似文献

The information explosion which has resulted from recent advances in computer technology has produced an ever increasing need for the clear and concise presentation of vast quantities of data. A Three Dimensional Display System is described which satisfies this need without the requirement for expensive and highly sophisticated equipment. The display system, which employs a small general purpose digital computer, utilizes only those components normally found in Electrical Engineering laboratories and can be employed as a real time output device to improve the man-machine communication link. The system can be effectively used as a teaching tool in the classroom to display in three dimensions many of the quantities and concepts which students deal with on a daily basis. The system can also be used as an aid in research where the increased "visibility," which the system can provide, yields new insight into the problem under investigation.  相似文献

There is an ongoing effort to effectively use the computer in the teaching of electromagnetic energy conversion. To that end, a computer program (Electric Machine Analysis Program, or EMAP), was developed to facilitate steady state and dynamic analysis of all common rotating machine performance. EMAP also analyzes magnetic core and transformer operation and provides a format for simple power factor correction calculations. The authors present a computer program to support the teaching of digital circuits. The program is used to describe, synthesize, and simulate combinational and synchronous sequential logic circuits, and to help students in their first contact with automatic synthesis tools. The program runs on both MS-DOS and UNIX machines, and it can be given freely to students for home use to significantly reduce the crowding in laboratories. Care has been taken to provide a friendly interface, so that the user can immediately concentrate on the study of circuits instead of having to learn a new program. The software described by the authors is currently used as a support tool in the course on Digital Circuits for Electronic Engineers at the University of Pisa  相似文献

A computer program to create magnetic resonance images simulating the main features of a magnetic resonance imaging (MR) machine was developed on a personal computer. The simulated MR images are calculated using the relevant equations describing a chosen pulse sequence on the basis of proton density,T 1 andT 2 images acquired from whole-body MR equipment. The imaging parameters (i.e., TR, TE, TI, etc.) are provided by the user. This program produces highly realistic simulated images and includes features such as choice of echo time, inversion time, repetition time and flip angle, as well as standard features of image display programs such as setting of window level/width, zooming and region of interest definition. A novel additional feature is the ability to define artificial pathologies in user-defined areas by specifying changes in the relaxation times and proton density. The simulator has been developed for teaching and training purposes. A prototype version has been used for teaching MRI with extremely positive reactions from students.  相似文献

The combination of computer analysis and measurements used to determine the optimum configuration for the grounding system for a large pulp and paper mill which includes three substation grounding grids, each located in a significantly different nonuniform soil, is presented. A thorough analysis and measurement program prior to construction of a new facility which can identify major problems before they occur is shown. This article describes the design and implementation of a virtual laboratory, computer-generated for the theoretical and practical teaching of electronic instrumentation. The virtual laboratory is implemented in a windows framework for which the teacher or student requires no prior knowledge to manage the program. The Virtual Instrumentation Workbench for Instrumentation allows visualization of the time and frequency effects produced in analog to digital conversion and in digital signal processing as well as visualizing the effects of 16 different teaching topics. It incorporates ten different waveforms, eight windows algorithms, five digital filters, and five discrete/fast Fourier transforms (DFT/FFT). The use of the virtual laboratory has allowed more than 500 students to understand the functioning of the new devices that are flooding the instrumentation market. Although it has been developed as an aid for electronic instrumentation teaching, it can also be used for the teaching of digital signal treatment  相似文献

A simulator has been written for a bit-slice system using 2900 series devices. The simulator is very helpful in the teaching of an advanced logic design course. The system was designed so that it could be expanded as the course progressed from a microprogrammed machine to a general-purpose computer, where the student can microprogram the instruction set. The result is that each student in a large class can have unlimited access to the bit-slice computer being discussed in class. A listing of a program and its execution is given as an example of a microcoded machine. For a general-purpose machine, one would need the microcode for the fetch and execution of the instructions stored in the RAM, the code for the program in the RAM, and the code for the MAP ROM  相似文献
