Transit-Time Design for Diffusion through Composite Liners   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Transit-time design methods are presented in this paper for determining the design thickness for composite liners consisting of a geomembrane and a compacted soil liner or geosynthetic clay liner. The design methods are based on a closed-form analytical solution for transient solute diffusion of volatile organic compounds in a composite liner and results from a numerical model. An analytical solution for diffusion in a two-layer soil profile, which is useful for transit-time design of composite liners, is also presented. The analytical solutions are used to develop graphical solution charts that can be used to design composite liners for which the effluent concentration and contaminant flux are less than a specified value. Design examples are included for a composite liner having a compacted soil liner and a composite liner having a geosynthetic clay liner. The method is relatively simple to apply and can be used for preliminary design of composite liners, evaluating experimental results, and verifying more complex numerical models.  相似文献

Numerical experiments were conducted to understand the effect of geometric and transport characteristics of a geomembrane-geosynthetic clay liner (GM/GCL) composite liner on gas leakage rate through a circular defect in the geomembrane (GM). The originality of the approach proposed in this paper rests on the use of a new conceptual two-layered system for modeling of GM/GCL composite liners where the interface zone between the GM and geosynthetic clay liner (GCL) has been merged with the GCL cover geotextile and handled as one layer; the GCL bentonite layer was considered the second layer. The role of the carrier geotextile layer was ignored since it can be considered as a no pressure loss layer. Analysis of numerical simulation results shows the existence of a constitutive leakage flow surface which enables evaluation of the leakage flow state for different geometric and transport properties of GM/GCL composite liners. Furthermore, the determined surface was also exploited to evaluate gas leakage rates under the framework of the Forchheimer’s analytical solution. The gas leakage rate predictions were found to be in good agreement with experimental results obtained at different GCL moisture content.  相似文献

Previous studies have shown little agreement between the test methods used to assess the bond strength and the mode of failure of resilient liners. This study evaluated the bond strength characteristics of resilient liners by means of 180-degree peeling and butt tensile strength testing. Seventy-two specimens were divided into peel bond and tensile bond specimen groups and were then subdivided into four test groups to evaluate each resilient liner. Tests were conducted with an Instron universal testing machine at a cross-head speed of 2 mm/minute for the tensile specimens and 5 mm/min for the peel specimens. Tensile bond strength and peel bond strength varied significantly among resilient liners except between Novus and Palasiv-62 liners in tensile testing. The mode of failure of Molloplast-B and Novus liners was significantly different between the tensile bond and peel bond test methods. It was concluded that bond strength characteristics can vary according to the test method used.  相似文献

A previously published liquid chromatographic (LC) method for determining residues of flumequine (FLU) and nalidixic (NAL), oxolinic (OXO), and piromidic (PIR) acids in catfish tissue was applied to salmon and shrimp muscle. Identities of all 4 residues in salmon and shrimp were confirmed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). The tissue is homogenized with acetone, the acetone extract is defatted with hexane, and the quinolones are extracted into chloroform. The extract is further purified by first partitioning into base and then back-extracting from a solution acidified to pH 6.0. Analytes are determined by LC with simultaneous UV and fluorescence detection. Muscle tissue was fortified with each quinolone at 5, 10, 20, 40, and 80 ng/g. Average recoveries and relative standard deviations (RSDs) for salmon, which represent an average of the 5 levels for each analyte, ranged from 75.9 to 90.8% and from 2.25 to 6.40%, respectively. Average recoveries and RSDs for shrimp ranged from 81.3 to 91.2% and from 7.34 to 10.7%, respectively. Identities of OXO, FLU, NAL, and PIR were confirmed in extracts of salmon and shrimp tissue fortified at 10 ng/g by determination of decarboxylated quinolones by GC/MS. Four diagnostic ions were monitored for OXO, FLU, and PIR, and 5 ions were monitored for NAL. All ion relative abundances were within 10% of those calculated for standard decarboxylated quinolones. Optimum conditions for decarboxylation and GC/MS confirmation are given.  相似文献

Buckling of thin cylindrical shell liners used for the stabilization of soft ground tunnels is treated as the buckling of an elastic ring restrained radially and tangentially by an infinite surrounding elastic medium. Stiffness components for the elastic medium are derived and used to provide various levels of approximation for the elastic critical loads and associated modes of the liner when subject to overburden pressure loading. For most practical tunnel liners, elastic buckling is found to occur in modes having relatively short circumferential wavelengths. In these circumstances an approximation introduced into the critical pressure analysis allows both the lowest critical pressure and its associated mode shape to be represented explicitly in terms of a single “soft ground tunnel buckling parameter”; this single composite parameter encapsulates all the relevant ground and liner geometric and material properties. It is this closed-form analytical representation of elastic critical buckling that provides a particularly convenient basis for predicting elastic-plastic failure. When imperfections are introduced, liner collapse and the various forms of ground failure can be modeled by methods analogous to the Ayrton-Perry expression for columns. Two generalized imperfection parameters emerge: one for liner collapse and the other for each of three possible, soft ground, failure modes. It is suggested that the analytical simplicity of the approach should make it an attractive alternative basis for at least the initial, rational, design of soft ground tunnel liners.  相似文献

A composite liner composed of a soil/clay liner and a flexible membrane is widely used for waste containment facilities. In this research, an organically modified clay (organoclay BB-40) liner and a high-density polyethylene (HDPE) membrane were studied for preventing the leakage and migration of gasoline from underground storage tanks into the surrounding environment. The equivalent hydraulic conductivity of intact HDPE to gasoline was determined using a specially built system, and the conventional hydraulic conductivity testing method was employed to determine the hydraulic conductivity of compacted organoclays and the permeation rate of gasoline through composite liners. The equivalent hydraulic conductivity of intact HDPE to gasoline was about 10–13 cm/s, and the hydraulic conductivity of the organoclay liner was approximately 6.0×10?9?cm/s, which is nearly 4 orders of magnitude lower than that obtained for unmodified clay. These results show that both organoclay and HDPE are effective in reducing the release of gasoline by advective flow, especially the intact HDPE. The flow of gasoline through the composite liners under the worst condition, was of the same magnitude as that through a single organoclay liner, independent of the flow shape. It can be anticipated that under good contact conditions, the defective HDPE would still be beneficial in reducing the permeation of gasoline due to the decrease of the wetted area of the underlying layer exposed to gasoline leakage.  相似文献

Comparison of Solute Transport in Three Composite Liners   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Three composite landfill liners were compared in this study based on leakage rate, mass flux, and sorptive capacity. One composite liner consisted of a geomembrane and a geosynthetic clay liner (GCL). The other two had a geomembrane and a thicker soil barrier (61 or 122 cm). The analyses employed one- and three-dimensional numerical models that were developed for analyzing contaminant transport through defects in the geomembrane component of composite liners and diffusion of volatile organic compounds through intact composite liners (i.e., composite liners without holes in the geomembrane). Cadmium was used to represent inorganic leachate constituents and toluene was used to represent organic leachate constituents. The composite liner, having a GCL had the lowest leakage rate of the three composite liners. For cadmium, the mass flow rate and sorptive capacity for the three composite liners varied within an order of magnitude. However, for toluene, the mass flux from the GCL composite liner was two to three orders of magnitude greater than that through composite liners having a thicker soil liner. Additionally, for leachate having similar concentrations of cadmium and toluene, the mass flux of toluene can be as much as seven orders of magnitude greater than that for cadmium. For toluene, the sorptive capacity of thicker liners was an order of magnitude greater than that for the GCL composite liner. Similar behavior is expected for other inorganic and organic solutes.  相似文献

The design of a compacted soil liner that includes sorptive amendments is presented and evaluated as a combinatorial optimization problem. An objective function based on the materials costs, opportunity costs, and construction costs of the liner was used to evaluate the effect of incorporating four sorptive materials: benzyltriethylammnonium-bentonite, hexadecyltrimethylammonium-bentonite, shale, and granular activated carbon (GAC) into a compacted clay liner in order to mitigate transport of organic solutes through the liner. The results from this study indicate that the inclusion of sorptive amendments as a component in compacted soil liners can effectively retard the transport of organic contaminants through the liner without violating regulatory hydraulic conductivity requirements. In all cases when aqueous transport was considered as a constraint in the objective function formulation, the resulting liner always contained some amount of sorptive amendment. In general, shale and GAC were selected for use in the sorptive liner design for all organic solutes tested. The modeling framework presented in this study is general and could be used to evaluate other types of sorptive materials or additional constraints, and thus represents a flexible new tool for the design of compacted soil liners.  相似文献

New methods for identification of amphetamines have been employed using gas chromatography/Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (GC/FTIR). These methods have provided identification of the drug and its metabolites, with detection at the low picogram levels or less than 10 ng/mL. Developments in cryogenic sample deposition for GC/FTIR spectroscopy have increased the sensitivity of GC/FTIR to levels that match or surpass that of gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS). This advancement in technology has allowed the highly selective ability of infrared spectroscopy to be used for identification and quantitation in studies where the analytes are in low concentrations. The limits of detection (LOD), quantitation (LOQ), and linearity (LOL), and precision have been determined in this study, and these instrumental parameters have been compared with those of established techniques.  相似文献

An important consideration for landfill liners and covers constructed in the frost zone of cold climates is the possible deterioration in performance due to freeze-thaw cycling over the design life of the liner or cover system. Several examples in the literature show that geosynthetic clay liners can withstand a limited number of freeze-thaw events, but data on long-term freeze-thaw performance are lacking. The objective of this study was to examine the long-term performance of geosynthetic clay liners exposed to repeated freeze-thaw cycles, encompassing their application as a final cover as well as a bottom liner. Measurements of hydraulic conductivity were performed after as many as 150 freeze-thaw cycles, with no appreciable increases observed.  相似文献

A total of 53 urine samples were tested by different immunoassay methods and by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry to determine repeatability of the different methods and to assess whether the immunoassays performed on samples obtained from elderly patients of the emergency section could be considered as reliable enough for identifying a benzodiazepine consumption. Repeatability was excellent for GC/MS and good for immunoassays. The specificity was not different for the three immunoassays (96%). The sensitivity varied from 36, 64 to 75% for OnLine, RIA Immunalysis and RIA DPC, respectively. An other difference between immunoassays and GC/MS was the ability of GC/MS to detect lorazepam and low concentrations of benzodiazepines whereas immunoassays did not.  相似文献

The use and abuse of performance-enhancing substances has been an issue in sports since the ancient Greeks. The availability of numerous synthetic steroids and recombinant peptide hormones has made testing an analytical challenge. Recent advances in mass spectrometry have provided an opportunity to decrease detection limits. The Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996 marked the first time every specimen was screened by gas chromatography (GC) coupled to high-resolution mass spectrometry (MS). A further improvement may be seen with GC/MS/MS and quadrupole ion traps. Electrospray HPLC/MS has also been applied to the detection and confirmation of peptide hormones in urine. The ability to detect subtle differences in oligosaccharide structure may provide a way to detect abuse of recombinant glycoproteins. Simply decreasing detection limits is not enough; new technology also allows development of a foundation on which to base interpretation. Application of HPLC/MS/MS has allowed direct measurement of steroid conjugates in urine. The relative importance of sulfate, glucuronide, and other conjugates and metabolites of testosterone and epitestosterone can now be assessed. In the international sports arena, the impact of genetic metabolic disposition must also be considered if we are to provide an equitable system. Further research will establish more-refined criteria for the detection threshold of abused substances.  相似文献

The EC Scientific Committee for Foods and more recently the Food Advisory Committee in the UK have proposed that levels of 3-chloro-1,2-propanediol (3-MCPD) in foods and ingredients should be reduced to the lowest possible. This paper reports on the development of methods for the determination of parts-per-billion (microgram/kg) levels of 3-MCPD in hydrolysed vegetable protein (HVP), flour, bread, meat and starch products using gas chromatography/ion-trap tandem mass spectrometry (GC/ITMS/MS). Mass spectrometer conditions for detecting 3-MCPD and the stable isotope internal standard (3-chloro-1,2-propandiol-d7) were established. Candidate extraction methods were initially evaluated for recovery and repeatability by spiking selected commodities at a level of 100 micrograms/kg. Extracts of ingredients and foods prepared by the candidate extraction methods were examined by GC/ITMS/MS using samples spiked at a level of 25 micrograms/kg. The results showed that detection limits of between 3 and 5 micrograms/kg could be achieved for all commodities.  相似文献

To study the feasibility and efficacy of field gas chromatograph/mass spectrometers (GC/MS), the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) conducted laboratory and field testing of a commercial transportable GC/MS. That unit was reengineered and reconstructed by NIOSH as a more portable GC/MS (can be moved, set up, and operated by one person), incorporating novel weight and size-reducing vacuum technology. Further laboratory and field tests were then accomplished. This NIOSH-developed vacuum technology has proven important in reducing the size and weight of the GC/MS by up to 50%, making it much more suitable for field use. Experience has shown that for a large class of survey situations involving monitoring of components of complex mixtures of vapors and gases field use of GC/MS can be very useful.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to characterize denture and soft liner adhesion and to determine the adhesive and/or cohesive strength of different soft tissue liners bonded to the denture base by use of a new technique. Two groups of five permanent soft liners (dry or exposed to water for 6 months) were tested by use of a tensile mode to characterize the failure characteristics of soft liners bonded to denture base resin. The method differed from previous test methods because of the specimen's ability to align axially during the test. The results indicated significant differences in the bonding of liners to the denture base, and light-cure systems exhibited the greatest amount of stress needed for failure. Low bond strength was observed when the adhesion was poor or when the cohesive strength of the soft liner was low and lead to pure adhesive or cohesive failure. When both adhesive and cohesive bonds were strong, failure occurred at high stresses. Combinations of adhesive and cohesive failures (mixed mode) were also observed in intermediate cases.  相似文献

Studies of the capillary zone electrophoresis (CZE) and micellar electrokinetic capillary chromatography (MEKC) behaviour of 1,4-benzodiazepines have seen application in subject areas such as the development of pharmaceuticals, therapeutic drug monitoring and forensic toxicology. In the development of pharmaceuticals, pKa determinations by CZE can be used in preclinical studies whereas analytical data on the detection and determination of 1,4-benzodiazepines is of value primarily in raw material/formulation assay and in the analysis of body fluids in clinical studies. The capillary electrophoresis (CE) techniques, which generally have inferior limits of detection (LOD) to rival techniques such as gas chromatography (GC) and high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), are particularly applicable in forensic toxicology where reasonably high concentrations of these drugs can be encountered. It is anticipated that, with the interfacing of CZE and capillary electrochromatography (CEC) with mass spectrometry (MS) techniques, the excellent selectivity of CZE and particularly CEC will be effectively combined with the sensitivity of MS and the identification capabilities of tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) and MS hyphenated (MSn) techniques.  相似文献

Polymer liners cast within damaged sewer pipes are commonly used in rehabilitation without the disruption associated with conventional trench excavation and pipe replacement. Linear stability depends on both the thickness of the liner, and any out-of-roundness (ovality or other shape imperfections). Field trials of four cast-in-place liner systems permitted samples to be exhumed and inspected. Measurements of liner thickness and out-of-roundness are presented, for use by researchers and others seeking to establish the stability of these pipe repairs. Significant variations in thickness were observed. These took the form of wavelike increases in local thickness. For all four types of lining systems, the maximum thickness was more than double the average thickness, and up to three times thicker than the minimum thickness values. Higher frequency thickness variations were also superimposed on those wavelike changes in wall dimension. Liner ovality of up to 10% was also observed due to ovality in the clay sewer pipes being repaired, even though those pipes were not fractured longitudinally. Postconstruction inspection of liners ideally includes assessment of liner thickness. Wavelike increases in liner thickness might be estimated, where these lead to intrusions into the waterway. However, irregularities on the external surface of the liner or long wavelength thickness variations would be impossible to detect from video inspection alone, and new inspection techniques are likely need to be developed to ensure the installed liner performs successfully over its design life.  相似文献

An assessment of state-of-the-practice at five full-scale North American landfills operating as bioreactors is presented in this two-paper set. This paper focuses on effectiveness of liners and leachate collection systems, leachate generation rates, leachate recirculation practices and rates, effectiveness in moistening the waste, and settlement of the waste over time. Except in one case, the liner and leachate collection systems at the bioreactor landfills were similar to those used for landfills operated conventionally. Leachate generation rates increased approximately linearly with recirculation rate, but in all cases, the leachate generation rate was <300?L/m2?year. Leachate depths generally were maintained within regulatory requirements, even with the highest recirculation rates. Leakage rates from liners at bioreactor landfills, including alternative liner designs employing geosynthetic clay liners, are comparable to leakage rates from conventional landfills. Thus, based on the information gathered in this study, additional requirements or features for liners or leachate collection systems are not warranted for bioreactor landfills. Diminishing capacity of horizontal recirculation trenches is common. Experience at one landfill suggests that small doses at high frequency under substantial injection pressure can deter loss of trench capacity. Only those landfills that were aggressive in recirculation had achieved water contents near the field capacity. Increasing the amount of liquid that is added may be required to achieve field capacity at some landfills, particularly if a final cover is placed soon after waste grades are reached. The rate of time-dependent waste settlement attributed to biodegradation is about 1.6 times larger in bioreactor landfills than in conventional landfills, and increases as the recirculation dosage increases.  相似文献

Human hair analysis is now recognized for evaluating someone exposure to xenobiotics: drugs of abuse, pharmaceuticals and polluants. This paper describes analytical methods than can be used by biologists. For drugs of abuse after decontamination, hydrolysis of hair, selective extraction and derivatization, determinations are performed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). Calibration uses deuterated standards. The cut-off value is 0.5 ng/mg for 6-monoacetylmorphine (heroin) and amphetamines and a benzoylecgonine/cocaine ratio > 0.05 for cocaine. Measurement of metabolites from endogenous metabolism sign the exposure (6-monoacetylmorphine and morphine for heroin, benzoylecgonine for cocaine, delta 9-tetrahydrocannabinol carboxylic by-product for cannabis). For drugs, after selective extraction, determinations are performed by GC/MS or liquid chromatography coupled to a diode array detector. Main applications concern drug monitoring to complement blood determinations or when blood collection is missing, as evidence of hidden, illicit or criminal drug exposure. Finally it is a powerfull tool for clinical diagnosis especially when late biological investigations are performed.  相似文献
