National Training Conference in Community Psychology.

This article describes the National Training Conference in Community Psychology, which marked the culmination of several years of planning, starting in 1970, by the Executive Committee of the Division of Community Psychology (APA Division 27). The Conference was held in Austin, Texas, April 27-May 1, 1975, and was sponsored by the Community Psychology Training Program of the University of Texas at Austin Department of Psychology. The Conference served to bring together for informal meetings and discussions the older and newer community psychologists, especially those who had entered the field during the last 5 years, to critically assess the many problems facing community psychology and to examine community psychology's conceptual independence from both clinical psychology and community mental health. The National Conference on Internship Training in Psychology.

The 1987 National Conference on Internship Training in Psychology was the first conference in the history of psychology to examine broad policy issues related to internship training in professional psychology. Delegates adopted a policy statement, which is printed here in its entirety. Core requirements for internship training were delineated, and implications of these policy statements are discussed. Perhaps most notably, the model of the one-year internship as the capstone of graduate education and training was considered to be outdated. A two-year supervised training experience was deemed necessary to produce an autonomously functioning professional psychologist. The need for another nomenclature was recognized. National Conference on Postdoctoral Training in Professional Psychology.

The Ann Arbor Conference on postdoctoral training (held in October 1992) was the 1st national conference to focus on the articulation of standards for postdoctoral education and training in professional psychology. Experts in education, practice, and credentialing drafted a policy document addressing the purposes of postdoctural training; entrance requirements; program content, structure, and organization; supervision; faculty–staff; evaluation mechanisms; and recommendations for the promotion of excellence. Report of the National Working Conference on Education and Training in Health Psychology.

Summarizes the Proceedings of the 1983 National Working Conference on Education and Training in Health Psychology, including a conference consensus statement on the status of health psychology, and reports from working groups in the areas of predoctoral education (with a recommendation to restructure), apprenticeship, postdoctoral research and professional training (with a recommendation for a new emphasis), health policy training, and respecialization and continuing education. The National Conference on Scientist-Practitioner Education and Training for the Professional Practice of Psychology.

Reports on the National Conference on Scientist–Practitioner (SP) Education and Training for the Professional Practice of Psychology held January 16–20, 1990. The conference was held to define the essential characteristics of the SP model, which has served as the framework for many training programs in clinical psychology. Themes of the conference included necessity of the model, integration, and identification of SPs. A 9-point professional practice experiential core was proposed, and the integration of the basic scientific core with all coursework and other didactic and experiential components of the program was proved essential. Annual review of Asian American Psychology, 2009.

The purpose of this study was to provide a systematic and critical review of research articles on Asian American psychology that were published in 2009. A search using PsycINFO led to the identification of 134 articles, and each of these articles were evaluated in terms of its topic areas, research methodology, and findings. The results showed that the articles covered a wide array of topics, including acculturation and enculturation, adoptees, career, counseling and clinical issues, educational experiences, families, health and health-related behaviors, identity, immigrants and refugees, interpersonal relationships, lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender/intersex/questioning, masculinity, older adults, personality, politics, psychopathology, racism, spirituality, stress and coping, violence, women, and youths. A summary of articles within these topics areas are provided. In addition, various characteristics of this body of literature are presented with their implications for future research. 2010年10月,首届全国环境与生态心理学大会在北京林业大学举办.会议以环境与人类心理为主题,开展了生态心理学研究进展、环境认知与心理健康、发展教育心理学的生态观研究、心理学对环境危机问题的思考、交叉学科的环境与生态心理学研究等专题讨论.同时,会议讨论了环境与生态心理学未来的发展趋势.本次大会是我国首次召开的环境与生态心理学大会,会议的召开在我国环境与生态心理学发展方面具有里程碑意义.     

Linguistic Isolation of American Psychology.

Comments on the original article "Linguistic isolation of American social psychology: A comparative study of journal citations," by L. J. Finison and C. L. Whittemore (see record 1990-57169-001). In this comment, the author makes two remarks relevant to the linguistic isolation of American psychology in general. First, the low citation rate to foreign language publications in American psychology journals, such as that found by Finison and Whittemore for social psychology journals, does not necessarily mean that almost every piece of research published in psychology is contributed by an American psychologist, or that American psychologists ignore the work of foreign researchers. Second, another factor that may explain partially, and at least in some areas of psychology, the high English-language citation rate in psychology journals is the translation of the work by foreign psychologists into the English language. On Training in Engineering Psychology.

In the April 1961 issue of the "American Psychologist," the Division 21 Committee on Training in Engineering Psychology presented a report covering the scientific and professional aspects of human factors engineering, with special emphasis on training programs intended to provide adequate preparation for specialization in this area. While the underlying philosophy and specific training programs outlined in the article are, in general, satisfactory a few points need to be emphasized and a few critical remarks need to be made. National Board of Examiners in Psychology.

Proposes the development of a National Board of Examiners in Psychology (NBEP) to combat the problem of an oversupply of PhD psychologists in the job market. The NBEP would license psychologists and gather information on job opportunities. This information would be used to limit the number of candidates who passed the examination. Psychotherapy with Southeast Asian American clients.

The number of Asian Americans has increased significantly in the United States because of political and geographical dislocations. Great emotional stress results from these dislocations, and there is an urgent and growing need for mental health services capable of serving this minority group. Nevertheless, existing American professional training is ill equipped to provide the skills and knowledge necessary to meet adequately the needs of our Asian-American neighbors. This article analyzes the problem and presents a number of case studies with recommendations for effective psychotherapeutic work with these clients. Comment on Publication Trends in American Psychology.

Comments on the increase of publications between 1953 and 1958 in American psychology. Recommendations were offered on how to handle the increase in publications. Rethinking Education in Psychology and Psychology in Education: The Inaugural Education Leadership Conference.

The inaugural Education Leadership Conference was convened by the American Psychological Association (APA) in October 2001 to provide a forum for groups and organizations across all levels of education and training to address issues of mutual concern, to promote a shared disciplinary identity among education and training leaders in psychology, and to influence public policy regarding education in psychology and psychology in education. Participants from 23 national education and training organizations, 25 APA divisions, and national credentialing organizations in psychology identified 8 major issues for education and training in psychology and addressed a number of specific questions relevant to ongoing work of the Board of Educational Affairs. Asian American psychology meets the twenty-first century.

Reviews the book, Asian American psychology: Current perspectives edited by Nita Tewari and Alvin Alvarez (2007). Drs. Nita Tewari and Alvin Alvarez have compiled and edited a well-organized, comprehensive, user-friendly textbook on Asian American psychology. The 58 contributing authors represent the breadth and diversity of this growing field of study. The reader who is looking for simple answers about Asian America will be frustrated by the book, as the complex texture and nuance within “Asian America” is well represented. The 650-page volume is divided into six sections: Foundations and Roots, Balancing Multiple Worlds, Gender and Intimate Relationships, Next Generation, Social and Life Issues, and Health and Well-Being. The book is oriented toward the subfields of personality, counseling, and clinical psychology. Internship recruitment and the VA Psychology Training Program.

A survey of 13 accredited and 12 nonaccredited VA internship centers indicates a flexible and varied administration of the program at the local level as to stipends, training hours, and training rotations. Responses to an anonymous questionnaire by 115 intern applicants who rejected VA internship offers indicated that the rejecting interns had a positive image of the VA, but they wanted a more heterogeneous patient population and a greater academic atmosphere for their internship than they thought the VA could provide.
