This article describes the National Training Conference in Community Psychology, which marked the culmination of several years of planning, starting in 1970, by the Executive Committee of the Division of Community Psychology (APA Division 27). The Conference was held in Austin, Texas, April 27-May 1, 1975, and was sponsored by the Community Psychology Training Program of the University of Texas at Austin Department of Psychology. The Conference served to bring together for informal meetings and discussions the older and newer community psychologists, especially those who had entered the field during the last 5 years, to critically assess the many problems facing community psychology and to examine community psychology's conceptual independence from both clinical psychology and community mental health. The 1987 National Conference on Internship Training in Psychology was the first conference in the history of psychology to examine broad policy issues related to internship training in professional psychology. Delegates adopted a policy statement, which is printed here in its entirety. Core requirements for internship training were delineated, and implications of these policy statements are discussed. Perhaps most notably, the model of the one-year internship as the capstone of graduate education and training was considered to be outdated. A two-year supervised training experience was deemed necessary to produce an autonomously functioning professional psychologist. The need for another nomenclature was recognized. Reports on the National Conference on Scientist–Practitioner (SP) Education and Training for the Professional Practice of Psychology held January 16–20, 1990. The conference was held to define the essential characteristics of the SP model, which has served as the framework for many training programs in clinical psychology. Themes of the conference included necessity of the model, integration, and identification of SPs. A 9-point professional practice experiential core was proposed, and the integration of the basic scientific core with all coursework and other didactic and experiential components of the program was proved essential. The purpose of this study was to provide a systematic and critical review of research articles on Asian American psychology that were published in 2009. A search using PsycINFO led to the identification of 134 articles, and each of these articles were evaluated in terms of its topic areas, research methodology, and findings. The results showed that the articles covered a wide array of topics, including acculturation and enculturation, adoptees, career, counseling and clinical issues, educational experiences, families, health and health-related behaviors, identity, immigrants and refugees, interpersonal relationships, lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender/intersex/questioning, masculinity, older adults, personality, politics, psychopathology, racism, spirituality, stress and coping, violence, women, and youths. A summary of articles within these topics areas are provided. In addition, various characteristics of this body of literature are presented with their implications for future research. Comments on the original article "Linguistic isolation of American social psychology: A comparative study of journal citations," by L. J. Finison and C. L. Whittemore (see record 1990-57169-001). In this comment, the author makes two remarks relevant to the linguistic isolation of American psychology in general. First, the low citation rate to foreign language publications in American psychology journals, such as that found by Finison and Whittemore for social psychology journals, does not necessarily mean that almost every piece of research published in psychology is contributed by an American psychologist, or that American psychologists ignore the work of foreign researchers. Second, another factor that may explain partially, and at least in some areas of psychology, the high English-language citation rate in psychology journals is the translation of the work by foreign psychologists into the English language. In the April 1961 issue of the "American Psychologist," the Division 21 Committee on Training in Engineering Psychology presented a report covering the scientific and professional aspects of human factors engineering, with special emphasis on training programs intended to provide adequate preparation for specialization in this area. The number of Asian Americans has increased significantly in the United States because of political and geographical dislocations. Great emotional stress results from these dislocations, and there is an urgent and growing need for mental health services capable of serving this minority group. Nevertheless, existing American professional training is ill equipped to provide the skills and knowledge necessary to meet adequately the needs of our Asian-American neighbors. A survey of 13 accredited and 12 nonaccredited VA internship centers indicates a flexible and varied administration of the program at the local level as to stipends, training hours, and training rotations. Responses to an anonymous questionnaire by 115 intern applicants who rejected VA internship offers indicated that the rejecting interns had a positive image of the VA, but they wanted a more heterogeneous patient population and a greater academic atmosphere for their internship than they thought the VA could provide.
