The Two-Fluid model has been used for modeling the flow of particulate materials through pneumatic dryer. The model was solved for a one-dimensional steady-state condition and was applied to the drying process of wet PVC particles in a large-scale pneumatic dryer and to the drying process of wet sand in a laboratory-scale pneumatic dryer. A two-stage drying process was implemented. In the first drying stage, heat transfer controls evaporation from the saturated outer surface of the particle to the surrounding gas. At the second stage, the particles were assumed to have a wet core and a dry outer crust; the evaporation process of the liquid from a particle assumed to be governed by diffusion through the particle crust and by convection into the gas medium. As evaporation proceeds, the wet core shrinks while the particle dries. The drying process is assumed to stop when the moisture content of a particle falls to a predefined value or when the particle riches the exit of the pneumatic dryer. Our developed model was solved numerically and two operating conditions, adiabatic and given pneumatic dryer wall temperature, were simulated. Comparison between the prediction of the numerical models of Rocha and DryPak, (Pakowski, 1996), which were presented by Silva and Correa (1998), with the prediction of our numerical simulation reviled better agreements with DryPak then with the models of Rocha. The results of the developed model were also compared with experimental results of Baeyens et al. (1995) and Rocha.  相似文献

The developed model was applied to simulate a drying process of wet PVC particles in a large-scale pneumatic dryer and to a drying process of wet sand in a laboratory-scale pneumatic dryer. The numerical solutions are compared successfully with the results of independent numerical and experimental investigations. An engineering application case study on a two‐fluid flow model for the control of industrial drying operations is reported. The mathematical model of this process was numerically solved by a computer code developed in FORTRAN language and was validated through data taken from PVC drying performed in an industrial continuous fluidized‐bed dryer. The predicted steady‐state outlet temperature and PVC moisture content values agree with the real data observed on the industrial plant. This model was also used to predict the temperature and concentration profiles inside the dryer as a function of time as a response to the disturbances and variations on the PVC water content at the dryer inlet.  相似文献

A control volume-based technique implemented in FLUENT (ANSYS Inc., Canonsburg, PA) computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package was applied along with the kinetic theory of granular flow (KTGF) to simulate the flow pattern and heat and mass transfer processes for sludge material in a large-scale cyclone dryer. The drying characteristics of sludge at the dryer inlet were obtained from a previous study on the drying of sludge in a large-scale pneumatic dryer. User-defined subroutines were added to extend FLUENT's capability to account for mixture properties and to simulate the constant and falling rate drying periods. The convective heat and mass transfer coefficients were modeled using published correlations for Nusselt and Sherwood numbers. Sensitivity analysis was conducted to determine the effect of gas-phase velocity and temperature on the final product outcome. Numerical predictions for the multiphase flow hydrodynamics showed a highly diluted region in the dryer core and a higher concentration of particles close to the wall region, an indication of nonuniform distribution of particles at a cross-sectional area. The numerical predictions for the hydrodynamic profiles qualitatively depicted the flow behavior natural to these designs. The work demonstrated the successful application of CFD in the design stage of a combined pneumatic-cyclone dryer model.  相似文献

An original experimental method is used to determine drying kinetic at particle scale. The particle scale kinetics was obtained by immersion of a small mass of wet polyvinyl chloride (PVC) particles (cake) in a batch dense fluidized bed containing inert hot particles (glass bead). The results are summarized here and prove clearly that the PVC drying is controlled by a competition between internal and external transfers. The drying kinetic was described by a particle scale model taking into account the convective–diffusive (mass transfer) and the convective–evaporative (heat transfer) phenomena. To validate this model with the experimental data, the experimental fluidized bed dryer is modeled following two different approaches: a perfect stirred reactor model and a 3D numerical simulation using the multiphase flow code NEPTUNE_CFD. The aim of this 3D simulation is to simulate the phenomena occurring, at local scale, in a dense fluidized bed dryer and to show the limitations of the perfect stirred reactor model.  相似文献

This paper presents an alternative method for drying suspensions, which consists in wetting inert polypropylene particles with suspension and drying these wet particles while they are pneumatically transported with hot air or combustion gases. A mathematical model was developed to simulate the drying process and the pneumatic transport. Experimental work was carried out in a pilot pneumatic dryer, using polypropylene particles like inert transport phase to verify these models. Apple pulp maltodextrine mixtures was dried and the results confirm the technical feasibility of the proposed technology.  相似文献

A spray dryer is the ideal equipment for the production of food powders because it can easily impart well-defined end product characteristics such as moisture content, particle size, porosity, and bulk density. Wall deposition of particles in spray dryers is a key processing problem and an understanding of wall deposition can guide the selection of operating conditions to minimize this problem. The stickiness of powders causes the deposition of particles on the wall. Operating parameters such as inlet air temperature and feed flow rate affect the air temperature and humidity inside the dryer, which together with the addition of drying aids can affect the stickiness and moisture content of the product and hence its deposition on the wall. In this article, an artificial neural network (ANN) method was used to model the effects of inlet air temperature, feed flow rate, and maltodextrin ratio on wall deposition flux and moisture content of lactose-rich products. An ANN trained by back-propagation algorithms was developed to predict two performance indices based on the three input variables. The results showed good agreement between predicted results using the ANN and the measured data taken under the same conditions. The optimum condition found by the ANN for minimum moisture content and minimum wall deposition rate for lactose-rich feed was inlet air temperature of 140°C, feed rate of 23 mL/min, and maltodextrin ratio of 45%. The ANN technology has been shown to be an excellent investigative and predictive tool for spray drying of lactose-rich products.  相似文献

Sludge drying is an important intermediate process for sewage sludge treatment, usage, and disposal. A series of drying experiments were conducted in a continuous paddle dryer in order to have a better understanding of the sludge drying mechanism. The couple model of penetration model and Markov chain was used to simulate the drying kinetics in a continuous paddle dryer. The drying process has been compared in experimental and theoretical results, which show good agreement. The sewage sludge drying process in a continuous paddle dryer can be divided into three stages: the pasty phase, the sticky phase, and the complete-granular phase. The influences of the drying parameters on the sludge drying kinetics in a continuous paddle dryer were investigated. The sludge flow rate, dryer wall temperature, and dryer slope have remarkable influence on sludge drying in the examined range, but the stirrer speed and steam temperature have little influence on the drying kinetics.  相似文献

Mixed-flow dryers are of great importance in worldwide agriculture for the drying of grain, corn, and rice. Unfavorable dryer designs can result in uneven particle and air flow distributions and, thereby, cause inhomogeneous gas–solids contact and drying conditions. As a consequence, the grain drying can locally be very uneven with high fluctuations of the moisture distribution over the dryer cross section. The main reasons are design and construction of the dryer apparatus and the discharge device. A new mixed-flow dryer design has been developed that promises more homogeneous drying, higher energy efficiency, and increased product quality. Firstly, the new dryer design was proved with respect to particle flow. For this purpose, a new test dryer was constructed. A series of particle flow experiments was performed using colored tracer particles. The flow of the tracer particles was observed through a transparent acrylic front wall by image analysis. Based on a comparison with the traditional design, the advantages and disadvantages of the new design were evaluated. The experimental investigations were accompanied by numerical simulations of the particle flow pattern using the discrete element method. The effects of design properties and different air duct arrangements were studied. The present results show that we are at the beginning of a new development concerning the optimization of mixed-flow drying apparatuses.  相似文献

The influence of potential heat exposure during spray drying on the oxidative stability of spray dried orange oil was studied. The design of some of the table top spray driers expose dried product to dryer exit air temperatures in the powder collection chamber or on the walls of the dryer if there is an accumulation of material on the drying chamber walls. This heat exposure may accelerate oxidation of the product in subsequent storage. To determine the potential for heat damage to affect oxidation of the powders produced, an orange oil infeed emulsion (carrier material - modified starch) was prepared and spray dried using the sample collection chamber supplied by the manufacturer as standard equipment. The spray dryer was then modified to extend the collection chamber inlet such that the product remained cooler than in the standard collection chamber. In this study, the spray dryer was operated for 1?h (inlet air temperature; 180°C and an exit air temperature; 100°C). Thus, the spray dry product could have been exposed to as much as 1?h of heating in the collection chamber (potentially at temperatures as high as the exit air temperature). In the case of spray drying with a collection chamber extension, the collected product was maintained at ca. room temperature. This would approximately mimic the heat exposure powders receive in an industrial spray dryer. Powders produced using both equipment designs were taken from both the collection and drying chambers, adjusted in water activity (0.33) under a nitrogen environment, and then put into storage in an incubator maintained at 35°C for 4 weeks (exposed to air). The ratio of limonene oxide to limonene was used to monitor oxidation using gas chromatography. This study showed a substantial increase in rate of oxidation of the spray dried powder from the table top spray dryer with the standard commercial collection chamber and much less in case of an extended collection chamber. The powder from the respective drying chamber also showed a higher rate of oxidation in comparison to its collection chamber. Thus, we urge researchers studying heat damage (e.g., oxidation) of powders produced on the table top dryers to be conscious of overestimating heat damage during drying.  相似文献

This paper explores numerical and experimental studies on the performance of a pneumatic conveying dryer. The four-way coupling Eulerian–Lagrangian approach is utilized in the numerical study and the experimental study is carried out in a pilot-scale vertical pneumatic conveying dryer of diameter 8.1 cm and 4.5 m length. The effects of Reynolds number, particle size, solid mass flow rate, and inlet gas temperature on the dryer performance are investigated. It is found that the present model predictions agree well with the experimental data. Generally, it is concluded that the drying rate increases as the Reynolds number increases, while increasing the particle size or the solid mass flow rate decreases the drying rate.  相似文献

A relatively large wet material was immersed in a fluidized bed of hygroscopic porous particle (silica gel beads) under reduced pressure. And then the drying characteristics were compared with those in the case of inert particle (glass beads). The comparison of drying characteristics is performed experimentally and theoretically. In calculation, the water transfer from the sample to the fluidized bed was considered. The calculation results are in good agreement with the experimental data. The effects of the operational conditions (the pressure in the drying chamber and the temperature of the drying gas) on the drying characteristics were also examined in both fluidizing particles.The drying finishes earlier in the case of hygroscopic porous particle than in the case of inert particle regardless of pressure in the drying chamber, since the water transfer from the sample facilitates the drying in the case of hygroscopic porous particles. The temperature decrement in drying appears in the case of inert particle. This phenomenon is also observed in the case of hygroscopic porous particle, but the decrement degree of the temperature is much smaller than that in the case of inert particle. The difference of the minimum temperature in the sample in drying between the cases of hygroscopic porous particle and inert particle is very slight for different pressures in the drying chamber.  相似文献

A continuous vacuum dryer for energy saving has been developed in order to produce dried foods without heat denaturation in the products. Pneumatic conveying drying (PCD) is a combination of heat and mass transfer and pneumatic handling technology. This technology has been extensively used in chemical, pharmaceutical, and food industries, as well as many others. The PCD technique is beneficial for agricultural products, because it can achieve high-quality drying with reduced heat damage in a very short time. In this study, one-dimensional and three-dimensional mathematical models for the drying of sawdust particles in a pneumatic dryer were developed and verified with experiments. The three-dimensional modeling was done with a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) package (ANSYS FLUENT, Ver. 13.0, Ansys, Inc.), in which the gas phase is modeled as a continuum using the Euler approach, and the droplet/particle phase is modeled by a discrete phase model with a Lagrange approach. One-dimensional analysis was performed in MATLAB (Ver. 7.0). The experiments were carried out to validate the model in a pneumatic dryer with a horizontal length of 1 m, vertical height of 1.1 m, and diameter of 0.14 m. Sawdust, a raw material used for producing pellets, was prepared from well-seasoned pinewood timber. The initial moisture content of the sawdust was 22% (wb). The hot air inlet temperature in the dryer was fixed at 100°C. The variations in air pressure, air velocity, air temperature, and particle moisture content were investigated along the length of the dryer. The final moisture contents of sawdust and air temperature were reduced by 2% (wb) and 5°C, respectively. The simulated values were in good agreement with the experimental values. The developed model was then employed for the design of a pilot-scale pneumatic dryer (length 7 m and diameter 0.14 m). The final moisture content of the sawdust particles was reduced to 14% (wb) when the dryer length was increased from 1 to 7 m. In addition, the modeling was performed using buffers in the pilot-scale dryers. The use of a buffer noticeably increased the drying efficiency.  相似文献

This article studies the possibility of reducing the high initial moisture content of wet rough rice using a small-scale low-cost pneumatic conveying dryer as a first stage dryer. The parameters investigated are final moisture content, surface temperature of rough rice, head rice yield, drying rate, power consumption per unit mass of evaporated water, and physical characteristics of rice. Parametric effects of the following variables are examined: velocity of drying air from 20 to 30 m/s, feed rate of rough rice from 150 to 350 kg/h, initial moisture content from 22 to 26% (wet basis), and drying air temperature from 35 to 70°C. From the experimental results, it is found that this drying method can be used for fresh rough rice with an initial moisture content of over 24% (wet basis). The drying process is able to lead to very rapid drying without any grain quality problems such as cracks in the rice kernel. The moisture content can be reduced to approximately 18% (wet basis) or about 5–6% of the initial moisture content within 3–4 s. The optimal drying air temperature is in the range of 50 to 60°C. A comparison of pneumatic conveying drying data obtained from the present study with fluidized bed drying data reported in the open literature is also discussed.  相似文献
