Building Mass,Plant Size and C.O.P.

Using the HOUSE computer program of the UK Electricity Council Research Centre, calculations have been made, as described here, of the effective performance of a house heating system, in this instance specifically related to a heat pump. The results show that the effective coefficient of performance of a heat pump is greater in a ‘heavy’ building than in a ‘light’ one, and is also greater when the capacity of the heat pump is relatively small. Measures to reduce standby operation of the heat pump are shown to be particularly beneficial in improving a heat pump's effective c.o.p.     

C. H. Reilly: Regency,Englishness and Modernism

C. H. Reilly (1874-1946) began his tenure of the Professorship of Architecture at Liverpool University by advocating a return to late eighteenth and early nineteenth century classicism, in defiance of the prevailing preference for non-academic Classicism and the Arts and Crafts aspiration to create a styleless architecture. Although Reilly's taste may appear conservative, it resembles in many ways the early stages of Modernism in Germany and France. After supporting American-style classical architecture in the 1920s, Reilly welcomed Modernism and was involved in the design of the Peter Jones store in London, 1936. The article looks at Reilly's developing ideas between the wars and proposes that Peter Jones was a realisation of Reilly's pre-1914 affection for the Regency, setting it in the context of British and foreign writings associating British Modernism with the Regency.

Construction of underground works in Shanghai, P.R.C.

For nearly thirty years, Shanghai has been constructing underground works designed to improve the city's infrastructure. A number of projects were undertaken using shield tunnelling method in order to determine whether this method could be used successfully in Shanghai's geology, which is characterized by silt and silty or puddly clay. These underground projects have included subway tunnels, sewage and water supply tunnels, road tunnels, and offshore discharge tunnels. This paper describes eight subsurface projects in Shanghai that have used the shield tunnelling method successfully.
