We investigated behavioral responses after dehorning and a sham procedure in 20 Holstein calves aged 4 to 8 wk. Calves either received a nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drug (ketoprofen) before dehorning as well as 2 and 7 h after the procedure or were assigned to a control group. All calves received a sedative (xylazine) and local anaesthetic (lidocaine) before dehorning, and responses were scored over 24 h after the procedure. After hot-iron dehorning, calves treated with ketoprofen also demonstrated little head shaking or ear flicking, but control animals demonstrated higher frequencies of these behaviors; both responses peaked 6 h after dehorning. Differences between the treatment groups remained statistically significant until 12 h (head shaking) and 24 h (ear flicking) after dehorning. A low frequency of head rubbing was observed in both treatment groups, but control calves were more frequently observed engaged in this behavior. There was no statistically significant effect of treatment on any of the other behavioral measures. Calves treated with ketoprofen also tended to gain more weight (1.2+/-0.4 kg) during the 24 h after dehorning than did control calves (0.2+/-0.4 kg). There was no effect of treatment on any of the response variables when calves were sham dehorned. These results indicate that ketoprofen mitigates pain after hot-iron dehorning in young dairy calves.  相似文献

Effects of handling, administration of a local anesthetic, and electrical dehorning on plasma cortisol were measured in Holstein heifer calves. Jugular blood was sampled from 24 calves (age, 7 to 16 wk) within 1 to 2 min after entering their pen (baseline, 0800 h). All calves were then haltered, placed in a restraint chute, an unheated electrical dehorner applied to each horn stump, and a second jugular blood sample obtained 30 min later (handling). Calves were then divided into control and test groups (12 calves). For the next 2 consecutive d the sequence of sampling blood and handling were the same except that 1) for control calves a heated dehorner was used on d 2 (dehorning), and 2) for test calves the cornual nerve of each horn stump was injected with 5 ml lidocaine prior to applying an unheated dehorner on d 2 (administration of anesthetic) and a heated dehorner on d 3 (combination of anesthetic and dehorning). Handling, injection of an anesthetic, and dehorning were stressful and increased plasma cortisol of calves 5.4, 16.8, and 28.3 ng/ml above baseline, respectively. Dehorning and the combination of injecting lidocaine and dehorning resulted in similar increases in plasma cortisol. Different responses in plasma cortisol in individual calves exposed to similar stimuli suggest that synthesis and release of cortisol can be modified.  相似文献

Dehorning is a painful husbandry procedure that is commonly performed in dairy calves. Parenteral meloxicam combined with local anesthesia mitigates the physiological and behavioral effects of dehorning in calves. The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of timing of oral meloxicam administration on physiological responses in calves after dehorning. Thirty Holstein bull calves, 8 to 10 wk of age (28–70 kg), were randomly assigned to 1 of 3 treatment groups: placebo-treated control group (n = 10), calves receiving meloxicam administered orally (1 mg/kg) in powdered milk replacer 12 h before cautery dehorning (MEL-PRE; n = 10), and calves receiving meloxicam administered as an oral bolus (1 mg/kg) at the time of dehorning (MEL-POST; n = 10). Following cautery dehorning, blood samples were collected to measure cortisol, substance P (SP), haptoglobin, ex vivo prostaglandin E2 (PgE2) production after lipopolysaccharide stimulation and meloxicam concentrations. Maximum ocular temperature and mechanical nociceptive threshold (MNT) were also assessed. Data were analyzed using noncompartmental pharmacokinetic analysis and repeated measures ANOVA models. Mean peak meloxicam concentrations were 3.61 ± 0 0.21 and 3.27 ± 0.14 μg/mL with average elimination half-lives of 38.62 ± 5.87 and 35.81 ± 6.26 h for MEL-PRE and MEL-POST, respectively. Serum cortisol concentrations were lower in meloxicam-treated calves compared with control calves at 4 h postdehorning. Substance P concentrations were significantly higher in control calves compared with meloxicam-treated calves at 120 h after dehorning. Prostaglandin E2 concentrations were lower in meloxicam-treated calves compared with control calves. Mechanical nociceptive threshold was higher in control calves at 1 h after dehorning, but meloxicam-treated calves tended to have a higher MNT at 6 h after dehorning. No effect of timing of meloxicam administration on serum cortisol concentrations, SP concentrations, haptoglobin concentrations, maximum ocular temperature, or MNT was observed. However, PgE2 concentrations in MEL-PRE calves were similar to control calves after 12 h postdehorning, whereas MEL-POST calves had lower PgE2 concentrations for 3 d postdehorning. These findings support that meloxicam reduced cortisol, SP, and PgE2 after dehorning, but only PgE2 production was significantly affected by the timing of meloxicam administration.  相似文献

Many dairy farmers in North America disbud or dehorn their cattle to improve human and animal safety. The Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (FARM v. 4.0) program requires that disbudding be performed before 8 wk of age with pain-control medication. The objective of this observational cross-sectional study was to quantify disbudding and dehorning practices of Wisconsin dairy producers to target future extension programming. Responses from 217 Wisconsin dairy producers and calf raisers were collected via digital surveys distributed at extension events and through industry contacts. Of the 217 respondents, 188 performed on-farm disbudding themselves. Most respondents (61%) used caustic paste as their primary method, which was most commonly applied on the day the calf was born (53%). Hot iron was used by 32% of respondents, and surgical methods (gouge, scoop, or wire saw) were used by 6% of respondents. Hot-iron disbudding was most commonly performed at 4 to 8 wk of age (41%) and 1 to 4 wk of age (33%), whereas surgical methods were most commonly performed at 8 wk or older (73%). Pain-control medication was used by 43% of respondents. Specifically, 35% used an anti-inflammatory, and 21% used a local nerve block. Veterinary involvement in creating the disbudding protocol was associated with increased odds of using pain control. Respondents with a target weaning age of ≥10 wk had greater odds of complying with FARM disbudding requirements and were also more likely to use polled genetics. Respondents aged 18 to 34 and respondents with >60 calves were more likely to have made changes to their disbudding or dehorning protocol in the last decade. Although use of pain control was higher than in previous US studies, full adoption of pain management requires further extension efforts. Veterinarians appeared influential on adoption of pain control, and their involvement may encourage adoption of pain management. Further research should investigate how the implementation of new FARM v. 4.0 standards will change the disbudding and dehorning practices of American dairy producers.  相似文献

In the past decade, substantial changes have occurred in the way dairy heifer calves are managed. The objectives of this study, part of phase I of the 2015 Canadian National Dairy Study, were to examine heifer calf health and adoption of rearing practices, and to explore factors associated with different rearing strategies on Canadian dairy farms. The questionnaire was open to all licensed dairy producers in Canada and had a 12% response rate (n = 1,373). Fifty-one percent of respondents reported never allowing heifer calves to nurse their dam, and 17% always removed calves within 30 min of birth. Sixty-seven percent reported always feeding heifer calves 4 L of colostrum within 12 h of birth; 17% always fed colostrum between 2100 and 0400 h; 5% pasteurized all colostrum fed on farm. Seventy-seven percent of respondents reported calving and stillbirth information for 2014; the mean reported stillbirth rate was 4.9% (SD = 3.3). Forty percent housed calves in individual pens, 34% in group pens, 21% in individual hutches, 2% reported tethering calves, and 1% used group hutches. Of those who housed calves in groups, 59% reported a maximum group size of 3 to 10 calves, 31% reported a pair (2) of calves per pen or hutch, and 10% reported a group >10 calves. The maximum amount of milk offered to calves per day during the preweaned period was a mean of 8 L (SD = 3). Fifty percent of respondents reported mortality data for 2014; mean preweaning mortality was 6.4% (SD = 8.3), and postweaning mortality was 2.4% (SD = 4.4). Over 95% of producers reported disbudding practices; 86% used cautery, 11% used surgical amputation, and 9% used caustic paste. Twenty-eight percent reported disbudding at less than 3 wk of age, 60% at 3 to 8 wk, and 22% at 8 to 16 wk; 5% of respondents reported dehorning at more than 16 wk of age. Sixty-six percent of cautery users reported use of local anesthetic, 33% used sedation, and 25% used a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Multivariable regression models showed that the use of local anesthetic when disbudding calves was associated with social media activity (odds ratio = 2.3) and high-speed internet access (odds ratio = 2.0), whereas sedation was associated with geographic region, and NSAID use was associated with disbudding at more than 3 wk of age. Exploring heifer rearing management practices, including adoption of best practices, may help focus future education and extension efforts. Poor reporting of mortality data may reflect a lack of recordkeeping on farm.  相似文献

Forty-one Holstein and Brown Swiss calves were raised as herd replacements under conditions in which they were allowed natural exposure to sporulated coccidial oocysts at a very early age. Two compounds previously shown to have anticoccidial efficacies, decoquinate and lasalocid, were used for this study. Calves were assigned randomly at birth to one of the treatments: decoquinate (approximately .5 mg/kg of BW) or lasalocid (approximately 1.0 mg/kg of BW) or to remain as unmedicated controls through 16 or 24 wk of age. Counts of fecal oocysts were reduced in the calves fed decoquinate for wk 4 to 8 and for both treated groups for wk 9 to 24. Calves fed decoquinate had increased BW, heart girth, and height at withers during wk 5 to 8. Both treated groups had higher gains than untreated calves during wk 12 to 16 with the decoquinate group larger than the lasalocid group. Feeding an anticoccidial compound to newborn calves reduced severity of coccidiosis when early natural exposure occurred.  相似文献

Many calves born on dairy farms are male, but little research to date has focused on the management of these calves. The objective of this study was to survey management practices of preweaned dairy bull calves and compare these practices with those used for heifer calves on the same operations. This study was conducted as part of the USDA National Animal Health Monitoring System Dairy 2014 study and included a sample of 42 operations from 10 states. On average, 2.4% of bull calves died before leaving the operation, with most operations selling bull calves before weaning (97.6%). Bull calves left the operation at an average age of 7.6 d (median = 4 d). Producers reported that 96.3% of bull calves received colostrum. Of bulls that were fed colostrum, the vast majority (95.4%) were hand-fed; the remaining calves received colostrum via a combination of hand-feeding and suckling (3.1%) or by suckling only (1.5%). In contrast, all heifer calves on those operations were only hand-fed colostrum. On average, bull calves received 3.1 L of colostrum at their first feeding at 4.3 h after birth compared with 2.9 L at 2.9 h after birth for heifer calves. In the first 24 h, bull and heifer calves received 4.8 and 5.5 L of colostrum, respectively. Only 21.4% of operations dehorned bull calves; in comparison, heifer calves were dehorned on 90.5% of operations. Few operations used analgesics or anesthetics when dehorning bull calves, whereas 28.9% of operations used anesthetics or analgesics when dehorning heifer calves. Overall, 27.8% of operations castrated bull calves. Of the operations that did castrate bulls, 70.0% used a band at an average age of 6.3 wk; the remaining 30% of operations used a knife at 14.7 wk of age on average. Few operations used analgesics or anesthetics when castrating. These results illustrate differences in the care of bull and heifer calves and suggest the need to improve education regarding recommended colostrum feeding and pain management practices in all calves regardless of sex.  相似文献

The objective was to investigate the acute effects of retinol acetate added to whey protein isolate (WPI) on postprandial changes in plasma retinol (experiment 1) and the acute effects of milk fat added to WPI on triglyceride (TG), chylomicrons and very low density lipoprotein (VLDL), and fatty acid concentrations (experiment 2) in suckling calves at 1 and 6 wk of age. In experiment 1, 16 Holstein male calves were alloted to 2 equal groups. On the days of measurement, the calves were fed at 0900 h whole milk [4% of body weight (BW)] mixed with vitamin A acetate (500,000 IU) with or without WPI (0.04% of BW). At 1 wk of age, significantly higher postfeeding concentrations of plasma retinol were observed in the calves fed milk with WPI. At 6 wk of age, no differences in the plasma retinol concentrations were observed between 2 groups. On the days of measurement in experiment 2, 16 male calves were fed at 0900 h whole milk (4% of BW) with added milk fat prepared by centrifugation from whole milk (2% of BW) with or without WPI (0.04% of BW). The milk supplemented with fat was prepared on the day before the measurement. At 1 wk of age, significant higher postfeeding concentrations of plasma TG concentrations were obtained in the calves fed WPI than in the control calves, immediately after the meal or from 7 h later onward. Plasma chylomicrons and VLDL concentrations at 1 wk of age were significantly higher in the WPI-fed group than in the control group at 8 h postfeeding. In the calves with the WPI diet, plasma concentrations of myristic, palmitic, stearic, oleic, and linoleic acids at 1 wk of age were significantly higher than those in the control calves at 8 h after feeding. However, chylomicrons and VLDL, and fatty acid concentrations did not differ between the 2 groups after feeding at 6 wk of age. Results indicate that WPI increases plasma lipid concentration of preruminant calves only at 1 wk of age. These data are interpreted to indicate that WPI enhances mainly lipid uptake in the intestines of neonatal calves.  相似文献

Pain management during and following disbudding procedures has been studied extensively, though few studies have evaluated wound healing following cautery disbudding in dairy calves. The purpose of this study was to observe wound healing following cautery disbudding with or without treatment using a topical aluminum-based aerosol bandage (ALU) in preweaned dairy calves. Dairy calves were disbudded within the first 3 wk of life using a standard cautery disbudding protocol. The ALU treatment was randomly allocated to the right or left horn bud within each animal. The outcomes measured were lesion score (LS) and wound diameter (WD). The LS was evaluated on a scale of 1 to 3, with LS = 1 representing normal healing without a scab or exudate, LS = 2 having the presence of a scab, and LS = 3 showing the presence of wound exudate. Lesion score and WD were evaluated on a weekly basis following dehorning for 3 wk. A total of 209 animals completed the study. No difference was observed in LS between groups during the first 2 wk postdisbudding, but the proportion of LS = 3 on wk 3 postdisbudding was greater for the control group when compared with ALU (17 vs. 8%, respectively). During wk 1 and 2 postdisbudding, the odds of having delayed healing, or a LS ≥2, were similar for both groups. However, the odds tended to be different at wk 3 postdisbudding with control disbudding sites being 1.42 times more likely to have delayed healing than ALU. In wk 3, WD was 1 mm smaller in the treatment group compared with the control, and treatment decreased diameter over time compared with controls. Overall, once abnormal wound healing was observed, the likelihood of having abnormal wound healing the following week was increased. However, treatment with ALU diminished this effect on delayed healing during the follow-up period. Based on these results, the use of ALU improved wound healing following cautery disbudding of preweaned dairy calves.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to more fully define the surgical stress response to dehorning by heat cauterization in dairy calves by measuring behavioral, hormonal, inflammatory, and immunological markers of stress and to determine whether a nerve block of the surgical site with a concentrated solution of lidocaine (5%) reduces the degree of stress. Thirty-two 10- to 12-wk-old female Holstein calves were randomly allotted to 1 of 4 treatments: 5% lidocaine followed by dehorning, 2% lidocaine followed by dehorning, saline followed by dehorning, or 5% lidocaine followed by sham dehorning. Plasma cortisol concentration was measured in blood samples collected via a jugular catheter at −0.5, 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3, 3.5, 4, 6, 9, 12, 24, 48, and 72 h. Various other blood constituents were measured in samples collected at −0.5, 12, 24, 48, and 72 h. Feeding, drinking, scratching, grooming, rubbing, licking, and inactivity behaviors were observed in the standing and recumbent positions using a 10-min scan sampling method analyzed on a time period and daily basis for 72 h following the dehorning procedure. The frequency of vocalization, kicking, and lying in the chute during the dehorning procedure were also assessed. The overall plasma cortisol concentrations were higher in calves subjected to dehorning than in control calves. Compared with the control group, the saline-treated calves had a higher cortisol concentration at 30 and 60 min postdehorning. Plasma cortisol concentrations were higher in all groups at 30 min postdehorning than at other sampling times. The percentage of circulating neutrophils and the neutrophil:lymphocyte ratio were increased in the saline and 2% lidocaine group. Total plasma protein, fibrinogen, and α1-acid glycoprotein concentrations were similar among treatments. The behavioral response to dehorning, as manifested by kicking while in the chute, was greater in the saline and 2% lidocaine group than in the control or 5% lidocaine treatment groups. In the postdehorning period, the percentage of time calves spent performing various maintenance behaviors did not differ among treatments. Thus, injection of 5% lidocaine may not provide any added comfort after the dehorning but may decrease the overall stress response during the procedure.  相似文献

Dehorning is performed on a high percentage of dairies worldwide. Concern about the negative effect of dehorning on animal welfare has contributed to the development of new guidelines that require the use of pain management at the time of disbudding in the United States. However, livestock producers are limited in how to address this requirement due to a lack of (1) approved analgesic drugs, (2) analgesic options that control pain for an extended duration, and (3) analgesic formulations that are practical for producers to administer. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of bupivacaine liposome suspension, a novel, long-acting, local anesthetic formulation administered as a nerve block at dehorning, compared with current industry standard analgesic approaches using lidocaine nerve blocks alone or in combination with the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug meloxicam. Fifty male Holstein calves, 10 to 14 wk of age, were enrolled and randomly assigned to 1 of 5 treatment groups before cautery dehorning as follows: (1) bupivacaine liposome suspension block, oral placebo (BUP); (2) lidocaine block, oral placebo (LID); (3) lidocaine block, oral meloxicam (1 mg/kg of body weight; LID + MEL); (4) saline block, oral placebo (CON); and (5) saline block, oral placebo, sham dehorn (SHAM). Biomarkers were collected from 0 to 120 h postdehorning and included infrared thermography, mechanical nociceptive threshold (MNT), pressure mat gait analysis, chute defense and behavior scoring, and blood sampling for serum cortisol and prostaglandin E2 metabolites. Responses were analyzed using repeated measures with calf nested in treatment designated as a random effect, and treatment, time, and their interaction designated as fixed effects. At 2 h postdehorning, the BUP group had a higher MNT compared with the CON group. Furthermore, at 24 h postdehorning, the BUP group had a higher MNT compared with the LID group. Gait distance differed significantly between treatment groups; the CON, LID, and LID + MEL groups had an increased gait distance relative to the SHAM group. The CON group exhibited a higher chute defense behavior score during the dehorning procedure compared with all other treatments. Furthermore, the CON group exhibited more ear flicks than the BUP and LID + MEL groups postdehorning. At 4 h and 24 h after dehorning, the LID + MEL group had a lower average prostaglandin E2 metabolites concentration compared with all other treatment groups. These data showed that administration of bupivacaine liposome suspension as a cornual nerve block at the time of dehorning was as effective at controlling pain as a multimodal approach of lidocaine and meloxicam.  相似文献

Eight neonatal bull calves were rumen fistulated and assigned to one of two weaning programs to study the effect of diet and weaning age on ruminal metabolic development. All calves were fed colostrum until 3 d of age and milk until weaning. Calves in the early weaning program were fed milk and a highly palatable, prestarter diet until they consumed 227 g/d and then a mixture of 227 g of prestarter and all the starter diet they would eat. Calves in this group were weaned at 4 wk of age. Calves in the conventional weaning program were fed milk and a starter diet and weaned at 6 wk of age. Eight ruminal samples were collected over 12 h from each calf at 1, 4, 8, and 12 wk of age. Ruminal fluid samples were analyzed for pH, VFA, NH3 N, and L(+)-lactate and D(-)-lactate concentrations. Calves weaned early had lower ruminal pH, higher total VFA concentration, and higher molar proportion of butyrate than conventionally weaned calves. Ruminal NH3 N and lactate concentrations were not significantly affected by the weaning program, although lactate tended to be higher in calves weaned early. Ruminal VFA concentration increased and NH3N concentration decreased with increased feed consumption by calves in both groups. Molar proportions of acetate, isobutyrate, and isovalerate decreased, and those of propionate increased with age in both groups. Apparently, ruminal metabolic development, as evidenced by changes in fermentation products, was faster in calves weaned early than in calves weaned conventionally.  相似文献

Thirty-two Holstein heifer calves, eight per group, were fed 0, 125, 250 or 500 IU/d of supplemental vitamin E/calf, from birth to 24 wk of age, in order to determine the effect on their immune responses. Overall mean lymphocyte blastogenic responses to various T-cell and B-cell mitogens were higher in supplemented calves than in control calves. Mean concentrations of cortisol in serum were lower in all supplemented calves than in control calves. Antibovine herpes-virus type 1 antibody titer (IgG) at 8 and 9 wk, in response to a commercial modified-live intranasal vaccine at 7 wk, was similar in all treatment groups. At 24 wk, in response to a booster at 21 wk, titer was higher in calves given 125 IU of vitamin E/d than in control calves. Based on the concentrations used, it is concluded that supplementation of conventional rations with 125 IU of vitamin E/d may maximize immune responses in calves and may be cost effective.  相似文献

Our objective was to examine the potential relationship between starch concentration of dry feed and growth performance of young dairy calves via mixed-effects model analyses. A database was developed from 6 published studies conducted at the Nurture Research Center, Provimi (Brookville, OH), from 2008 to 2017 that included 18 dietary treatments and 372 calves at 0 to 8 wk of age in 5 nursery trials and 26 dietary treatments and 660 calves at 8 to 16 wk of age in 8 grower trials. The dry feeds ranged from 10.1 to 53.3% starch, 12.1 to 45.3% neutral detergent fiber, and 2.7 to 3.0 Mcal/kg of metabolizable energy [dry matter (DM) basis]. In all nursery trials, with increasing starch concentration in starter, average daily gain (ADG), hip width change, and starter intake linearly increased. In all grower trials, as starch concentration of dry feed increased, ADG, hip width change, and ADG/DM intake linearly increased; DM intake and DM intake/body weight were unaffected. In addition, the calves at 6 to 16 wk of age had greater digestibility of DM and crude protein with increasing starch concentration of dry feed. As indicated by meta-regression analysis, growth responses to starch concentration were influenced by metabolizable energy concentration in dry feed fed to the calves up to 16 wk of age. Changing starch from 23 to 43% on a DM basis (a typical range in the US industry) was predicted to increase ADG and hip width change by 5.8 and 5.0%, respectively, for calves at 0 to 8 wk of age and by 9.6 and 11.2%, respectively, for calves at 8 to 16 wk of age. Positive linear relationships between starch concentration of dry feed with DM digestibility, ADG, and hip width change reflect the importance of starch in the diets of young dairy calves.  相似文献

Differences in adoption of selected practices used in welfare assessment and audit programs were contrasted among organic (ORG; n = 192) herds and similarly sized conventional grazing herds (CON-GR; n = 36), and conventional nongrazing herds (CON-NG; n = 64). Criteria from 3 programs were assessed: American Humane Association Animal Welfare Standards for Dairy Cattle, Farmers Assuring Responsible Management (FARM), and the Canadian Codes of Practice (CCP). Data were collected by trained study personnel during a herd visit and included information about neonatal care, dehorning, pain relief, calf nutrition, weaning, record keeping, use of veterinarians, and animal observations. Associations of management type (ORG, CON-GR, or CON-NG) with adoption of selected practice were assessed. Almost all farms (97%) met criteria suggested for age at weaning but fewer CON-NG farmers weaned calves at ≥5 wk of age compared with ORG and CON-GR farmers. Only 23% of farms met program requirements for use of pain relief during dehorning, and fewer CON-NG farmers used pain relief for calves after dehorning compared with ORG and CON-GR farmers. Calves on ORG farms were fed a greater volume of milk and were weaned at an older age than calves on CON-GR and CON-NG farms. Calves on CON-GR farms were dehorned at a younger age compared with calves on ORG and CON-NG farms. The calving area was shared with lactating cows for a larger proportion of ORG herds compared with conventional herds. About 30% of herds met welfare program criteria for body condition score but only about 20% met criteria for animal hygiene scores. The least proportion of cows with hock lesions was observed on ORG farms. Regular use of veterinarians was infrequent for ORG herds. Results of this study indicate that most of the organic and conventional farms enrolled in this study would have been unlikely to achieve many criteria of audit and assessment programs currently used in the US dairy industry.  相似文献

To determine the effect of age at grouping on behavior, health, and production of dairy bull calves, 90 Holstein-Friesian bull calves were housed in individual pens until moved to 1 of 3 treatments. Calves were housed in groups of 3 calves at 3 d old (GH3), 7 d old (GH7), or 14 d old (GH14) until 7 wk of age. Ten groups of 3 calves for each treatment were used, with 5 pens/treatment in each of 2 replications (10 pens/treatment, 3 treatments, 3 calves/treatment; 90 calves total). Direct behavioral observations using instantaneous scan sampling every 10 min were conducted twice per week for 7 wk. At the same times, video data were recorded for continuous observations at feeding time to observe the overall activity of group-housed calves. Hip height, heart girth, and health scores were recorded weekly and body weight was recorded at the start and end of the study. Calves in GH3 spent more time playing and but more time cross-sucking and displacing other calves from milk bottles. Calves engaged in social interaction as early as 3 d of age, and social interactions between 3 to 6 wk of age increased markedly. Calves housed in GH14 vocalized more than did calves in GH7 and GH3. No difference was found between treatments in growth performance. Calf fecal, cough, and nasal and ocular discharge scores, differential leukocyte counts, and plasma cortisol concentrations were not affected by age at grouping. However, during the first week of grouping, when calves were moved from individual pens to group pens, some calves were unable to find their milk bottles and required guidance. In conclusion, these data show no adverse effects on health or performance and some benefits on social behavior for early (d 3) grouping of calves.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate group versus individual housing with a cold ad libitum feeding system for calves. Twelve Holstein calves were assigned to group or individual housing at birth. The experiment had two replications, each consisting of one group of 3 calves and 3 individually housed calves. All calves were fed cold acidified milk replacer ad libitum plus calf starter and water. Behavior was studied for one 48-h period during wk 1, 3, and 6. Four male calves were slaughtered at wk 6 for determination of carcass composition. Milk replacer and water intakes in the preweaning period (wk 1 to 5) tended to be higher for group-fed calves. Calf starter intake was not different. Group-housed calves had a higher BW and a slightly higher (although not statistically significant) average daily gain than calves fed in individual pens. Packed cell volume was lower for group calves due to their higher liquid intake, but plasma glucose and urea N concentrations were similar. Individually housed calves spent more time using the nipple and group-fed calves spent more time drinking water. Amount of time eating starter did not differ between treatments but differed with age. Carcass composition was not different between calves housed individually or in groups.Because individually housed calves spent more time using the nipple, but consumed less milk replacer, they may have been exhibiting a form of purposeless behavior. Higher milk replacer intake by group-fed calves did not result in greater carcass fat content at 6 wk of age.  相似文献

Forty-four Holstein calves were assigned randomly to treatments in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement of weaning age (4 or 7 wk) and coccidiostat (treatment or control). The objective of this study was to compare the effectiveness of a coccidiostat, decoquinate, on health parameters and growth of neonatal dairy calves on early and conventional weaning systems. Calves weaned at 4 wk had greater intakes of grain in wk 5 to 7 than did calves weaned at 7 wk. Differences in intakes between weaning groups were not apparent from wk 8 to 24. Fecal coccidia oocyst counts were not affected by age at weaning but were affected by coccidiostat feeding at the rate of .5 mg/kg BW/d offered from 3 d of age and throughout the trial. No effects due to age at weaning or coccidiostat treatment were found in plasma glucose, urea N, and minerals (Ca, P, Na, Cl, K, Mg). Growth parameters were significantly increased in treated animals. Total BW was increased (wk 9 to 24) in treated over control calves (127.3 versus 118.5 kg). Height at withers was also increased in treated calves (95.0 vs. 92.8 cm). Coccidiosis treatment increased growth of dairy calves from 9 to 24 wk, but no interactions were found between coccidiosis treatment and age at weaning.  相似文献

Rates of utilization of glucose, acetate, and lactate and activities of selected enzymes were determined in vitro to evaluate the effects of age and diet on lipogenesis in perirenal adipose tissue of calves. Three-day-old Holstein bull calves were fed up to 12 wk of age on one of three dietary treatments: a high carbohydrate milk replacer; a high fat milk replacer; and weaning at 6 wk of age from high fat replacer to calf starter. Adipose tissue biopsies were obtained from calves at 2, 5, 8, and 12 wk of age. Rates of fatty acid synthesis and activities of enzymes of the pentose phosphate and citrate cleavage pathways were increased in calves fed high carbohydrate milk replacer. These parameters were decreased in calves fed high fat replacer and were further depressed after weaning. Substrate preference for fatty acid synthesis in all calves was acetate, then lactate, then glucose. With increase in age from 2 to 12 wk, adipose tissue of calves fed milk replacer partitioned more acetate and lactate toward fatty acid synthesis and less toward oxidation. The pentose phosphate cycle was characterized by high rate of recycling and contributed at least 50% of reducing equivalents required for fatty acid synthesis. It appeared that several features of lipogenesis characteristic of functional ruminants are also shared by preruminant calves.  相似文献

Newborn Holstein male calves (n = 50) born on a single dairy farm were assigned randomly at birth to receive 3 feedings of 1.8 L of pooled maternal colostrum (MC) at 1, 6, and 12 h of age or 1 feeding of 500 g of a colostrum replacer reconstituted to 1.8 L at 1 h of age, followed by 2 feedings of 227 g of a commercial milk replacer (MR) reconstituted to 1.8 L at 6 and 12 h of age (CR). All feedings were administered by esophageal feeder. At 2 to 3 d of age, calves were transported to the experimental facility and assigned within colostrum group to receive 0.66 kg/d dry matter (DM) of MR to 39 d, and then 0.33 kg/d to 42 d (MRM) or 0.77 kg/d of MR DM to d 13, 1.03 kg/d for 22 d, and 0.51 kg/d for 7 d (MRH). The MR contained 25.8% crude protein and 17.6% crude fat (DM basis) and was based on whey proteins and lard as the primary fat source. Calf starter (21.7% crude protein, 15.7% neutral detergent fiber, 37.4% starch, DM basis) and water were available for ad libitum consumption throughout the 56-d study. Serum IgG and total protein were measured at 2 to 3 d of age. Intakes of MR and calf starter were monitored daily. Calf health and fecal scores were also monitored daily. Body weight was measured weekly, and hip width and body condition score were monitored every 2 wk. Digestion of DM, organic matter, crude protein, and ether extract were determined at 1 and 3 wk from 5 calves randomly selected within treatment and using chromic oxide as a digestibility marker added to the MR. Calves fed CR had lower serum IgG and total protein than calves fed MC. Also, calves fed CR grew more slowly, consumed less calf starter, and were less efficient to 56 d than calves fed MC. The number of days calves were treated with veterinary medications was higher when calves were fed CR. Calves fed MC-MRH gained more BW than other calves from 3 to 8 wk of age. Calves fed CR-MRH consumed less calf starter than other calves during wk 7 and 8. Digestion of nutrients at 1 and 3 wk of the study was unaffected by type of colostrum or level of MR fed and did not change from 1 to 3 wk. Over the first 2 mo of life, the calves fed MRH consumed less calf starter than calves fed MRM, but average daily gain or hip width change did not differ. One feeding of CR followed by 2 feedings of MR in the first 24 h likely reduced absorption of IgG from CR and contributed to differences in health and growth. Differences in animal performance observed in this study were unrelated to MR digestibility.  相似文献
