The effect of strain rate on the mechanical behavior of epoxy reinforced with graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs) is investigated. Nanocomposites containing various amounts of GNP are prepared and tested at four different strain rates (0.01, 0.1, 1 and 10/s) under compressive and tensile loading regimes. The results show that incorporation of GNP highly affects the behavior of epoxy. The fracture surfaces of tensile specimens are also investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to discern the surface features and dispersion state of GNP. Finally, the predictive capability of some of the available models for evaluating the strength of nanocomposites are assessed and compared against the experimental results. Moreover, a modification factor to the widely used Halpin–Tsai model is proposed to improve the accuracy of the model when evaluating the Young’s modulus of nanocomposites at various strain rates.  相似文献

The reinforcement effects of two nanofillers, i.e., multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) and vapor grown carbon fiber (VGCF), which are used at the interface of conventional CFRP laminates, and in epoxy bulk composites, have been investigated. When using the two nanofillers at the interface between two conventional CFRP sublaminates, the Mode-I interlaminar tensile strength and fracture toughness of CFRP laminates are improved significantly. The performance of VGCF is better than that of MWCNT in this case. For epoxy bulk composites, the two nanofillers play a similar role of good reinforcement in Young’s modulus and tensile strength. However, the Mode-I fracture toughness of epoxy/MWCNT is much better than that of epoxy/VGCF.  相似文献

Untreated and acid-treated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNT) were used to fabricate MWNT/epoxy composite samples by sonication technique. The effect of MWNT addition and their surface modification on the mechanical properties were investigated. Modified Halpin–Tasi equation was used to evaluate the Young’s modulus and tensile strength of the MWNT/epoxy composite samples by the incorporation of an orientation as well as an exponential shape factor in the equation. There was a good correlation between the experimentally obtained Young’s modulus and tensile strength values and the modified Halpin–Tsai theory. The fracture surfaces of MWNT/epoxy composite samples were analyzed by scanning electron microscope.  相似文献

Styrene butadiene rubber (SBR) based hybrid nanocomposites containing carbon black (CB) and organo-modified nanoclay (NC) was prepared. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed the presence of intercalated, aggregated, and partially exfoliated structures. Incorporating 10 phr NC to the control SBR containing 20 phr CB resulted 153% increase in tensile strength, 157% increase in elongation at break and 144% stress improvement at 100% strain, which showed synergistic effect between the fillers. The dynamic modulus reinforcement of nanocomposites was examined by the Guth, Modified Guth, and Halpin–Tsai equations. For predicting CB filled nanocomposite modulus, the contribution of modified intercalated structure of clay and the ‘nano-unit’ (dual structure) comprising CB–NC should be considered.  相似文献

Composites based on epoxy resin and differently aligned multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) sheets have been developed using hot-melt prepreg processing. Aligned MWCNT sheets were produced from MWCNT arrays using the drawing and winding technique. Wavy MWCNTs in the sheets have limited reinforcement efficiency in the composites. Therefore, mechanical stretching of the MWCNT sheets and their prepregs was conducted for this study. Mechanical stretching of the MWCNT sheets and hot stretching of the MWCNT/epoxy prepregs markedly improved the mechanical properties of the composites. The improved mechanical properties of stretched composites derived from the increased MWCNT volume fraction and the reduced MWCNT waviness caused by stretching. With a 3% stretch ratio, the MWCNT/epoxy composites achieved their best mechanical properties in this study. Although hot stretching of the prepregs increased the tensile strength and modulus of the composites considerably, its efficiency was lower than that of stretching the MWCNT sheets.  相似文献

Graphene nanopowder (GNP) and multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)-filled epoxy thin-film composites were fabricated using ultrasonication and the spin coating technique. The effect of sonication time (10, 20 and 30 min) and GNP loading (0.05–1 vol%) on the tensile and electrical properties of GNP/epoxy thin-film composites was investigated. The addition of GNP decreased the material’s tensile strength and modulus. However, among the tested samples, the GNP/epoxy composites produced using 20 min of sonication time had a slightly higher tensile strength and modulus, with a lower electrical percolation threshold volume fraction. The effect of sonication time was supported by morphological analysis, which showed an improvement in GNP dispersion with increased sonication time. However, GNP deformation was observed after a long sonication time. The GNP/epoxy composites at different filler loadings showed higher electrical properties but slightly lower tensile properties compared with the MWCNT/epoxy composites fabricated using 20 min of sonication time.  相似文献

In the present work, single-walled carbon nanotubes were dispersed within the matrix of carbon fabric reinforced epoxy composites in order to develop novel three phase carbon/epoxy/single-walled carbon nanotube composites. A combination of ultrasonication and high speed mechanical stirring at 2000 rpm was used to uniformly disperse carbon nanotubes in the epoxy resin. The state of carbon nanotube dispersion in the epoxy resin and within the nanocomposites was characterized with the help of optical microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Pure carbon/epoxy and three phase composites were characterized for mechanical properties (tensile and compressive) as well as for thermal and electrical conductivity. Fracture surfaces of composites after tensile test were also studied in order to investigate the effect of dispersed carbon nanotubes on the failure behavior of composites. Dispersion of only 0.1 wt% nanotubes in the matrix led to improvements of 95% in Young's modulus, 31% in tensile strength, 76% in compressive modulus and 41% in compressive strength of carbon/epoxy composites. In addition to that, electrical and thermal conductivity also improved significantly with addition of carbon nanotubes.  相似文献

In this research, the influence of adding multi-walled carbon nanotubes at various contents on the mechanical properties of chopped strand mat/polyester composites was investigated. Initially, the effect of the sonication time on the dispersion of carbon nanotube at the highest weight ratio (0.5 wt.%) was inspected. To achieve this goal, a new technique based on scanning electron microscopy, which utilizes the burn-off test, was introduced to visualize the dispersion state of carbon nanotubes. Subsequently, the effect of addition of multi-walled carbon nanotube on the tensile and flexural properties of the fiber reinforced composites was studied. The results of mechanical tests showed that adding only 0.05 wt.% carbon nanotube enhanced the flexural strength of the hybrid composite by 45% while the tensile strength was not changed significantly. Improvements in the tensile and flexural moduli were also observed. Moreover, theoretical relations between the tensile, flexural and compressive moduli based on the classical beam theory were employed to determine the effect of carbon nanotube on the compressive modulus of composites. The theoretical result showed 31% enhancement in the compressive modulus.  相似文献

The influences of dispersion quality and processing conditions on the electrical and mechanical properties of multi-walled carbon nanotube-filled polyvinyl chloride (MWCNT/PVC) composites are examined for potential use in sensor-enabled geosynthetics and other applications involving electrically-conductive polymer composites. Electrical conductivity and mechanical properties of the composite samples made using four different dispersion methods (i.e. probe sonication, bath sonication, mechanical stirring and batch mixing) are measured. Subsurface dispersion in the samples is quantified using laser scanning confocal microscopy and scanning electron microscopy, indicating that MWCNT bundle volumes resulting from all dispersion methods had a log-normal distribution. Dispersion qualities using different mixing methods are compared using the Kolmogorov–Smirnov D-statistic. Findings indicate that samples with higher dispersion quality exhibit greater ultimate strength and failure strain, whereas poorly-dispersed specimens have greater elastic modulus values, which are found to be in good agreement with those predicted by the Halpin–Tsai model.  相似文献

Reinforcement of styrene-butadiene-rubber (SBR) was investigated using two different carbon blacks (CBs) with similar particle sizes, including highly structured CB and conventional CB, as well as multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) prepared by mechanical mixing. The attempts were made to examine reinforcing mechanism of these two different classes of carbon nanoparticles. Scanning electron microscopy and electrical conductivity measurement were used to investigate morphology. Tensile, cyclic tensile and stress relaxation analyses were performed. A modified Halpin-Tsai model based on the concept of an equivalent composite particle, consisting of rubber bound, occluded rubber and nanoparticle, was proposed. It was found that properties of CB filled SBR are significantly dominated by rubber shell and occluded rubber in which molecular mobility is strictly restricted. At low strains, these rubber constituents can contribute in hydrodynamic effects, leading to higher elastic modulus. However, at higher strains, they contribute in stress hardening resulting in higher elongation at break and higher tensile strength. These elastomeric regions can also influence stress relaxation behaviors of CB filled rubber. For SBR/MWCNT, the extremely great inherent mechanical properties of nanotube along with its big aspect ratio were postulated to be responsible for the reinforcement while their interfacial interaction was not so efficient.  相似文献

Carbon fiber-reinforced epoxy composites modified with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were fabricated and characterized. High-energy sonication was used to disperse CNTs in the resin, followed by infiltration of fiber preform with the resin/CNT mixture. The effects of sonication time on the mechanical properties of “multiscale” composites, which contain reinforcements at varying scales, were studied. A low CNT loading of 0.3 wt% in resin had little influence on tensile properties, while it improved the flexural modulus, strength, and percent strain to break by 11.6%, 18.0%, and 11.4%, respectively, as compared to the control carbon fiber/epoxy composite. While sonication is an effective method to disperse CNTs in a resin, duration, intensity, and temperature need to be controlled to prevent damages imposed on CNTs and premature resin curing. A combination of Halpin–Tsai equations and woven fiber micromechanics was used in hierarchy to predict the mechanical properties of multiscale composites, and the discrepancies between the predicted and experimental values are explained.  相似文献

In this study, nanocomposites based on three commercial ethylene vinyl acetate copolymers (EVA) and purified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) have been prepared via direct melt blending. The influence of the matrix polarity, related here to the relative content in vinyl acetate units, on the mechanical properties has been studied, by comparing the tensile properties of the nanocomposites to those of the unfilled matrices. The relative Young’s modulus of the nanocomposites is shown to slightly increase with the polarity of the matrix. Tapping mode atomic force microscopy has been used to study the state of dispersion of the MWNTs in the EVA matrices. The morphological results do not show a clear dependence between the polarity of the matrix and the dispersion state of the nanotubes: increasing the vinyl acetate content in the EVA matrix does not generate a much finer dispersion of the MWNTs. This was confirmed by the experimental determination of the relative Young’s modulus compared with the theoretical predictions. The increase, with the VA content, of the relative stiffness of the resulting materials is further explained by the determination of the mean aspect ratio of the dispersed particles, as evaluated using the Halpin–Tsai model.  相似文献

This study examined the mechanical properties of aligned multi-walled carbon nanotube (CNT)/epoxy composites processed using a hot-melt prepreg method. Vertically aligned ultra-long CNT arrays (forest) were synthesized using chemical vapor deposition, and were converted to horizontally aligned CNT sheets by pulling them out. An aligned CNT/epoxy prepreg was fabricated using hot-melting with B-stage cured epoxy resin film. The resin content in prepreg was well controlled. The prepreg sheets showed good drapability and tackiness. Composite film specimens of 24-33 μm thickness were produced, and tensile tests were conducted to evaluate the mechanical properties. The resultant composites exhibit higher Young’s modulus and tensile strength than those of composites produced using conventional CNT/epoxy mixing methods. For example, the maximum elastic modulus and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of a CNT (21.4 vol.%)/epoxy composite were 50.6 GPa and 183 MPa. These values were, respectively, 19 and 2.9 times those of the epoxy resin.  相似文献

The potential of carbon nanotube reinforcement of metallic binders for the improvement of quality and efficiency of diamond cutting wheels is studied. The effect of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) reinforcement on the mechanical properties i.e. hardness, Young modulus, strength and deformation behavior of copper and iron based binder for diamond cutting wheels is investigated experimentally and numerically. Computational micromechanical studies were carried out to clarify the mechanisms of the MWCNT material strengthening. It is demonstrated that the adding of MWCNTs leads to the decrease of grain size of the structural constituents of the binder, what in turn leads to the improved simultaneously hardness, Young modulus, plastic extension, bending strength and performances of the metallic binders. Comparing service properties of diamond end-cutting drill bits with and without MWCNT one observed the drastic increase of the cutting speed as a result of MWCNT reinforcement.  相似文献

Cryogenic mechanical properties are important parameters for epoxy resins used in cryogenic engineering areas. In this study, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were employed to reinforce diglycidyl ether of bisphenol F (DGBEF)/diethyl toluene diamine (DETD) epoxy system modified by poly(ethersulfone) (PES) for enhancing the cryogenic mechanical properties. The epoxy system was properly modified by PES in our previous work and the optimized formulation of the epoxy system was reinforced by MWCNTs in the present work. The results show that the tensile strength and Young’s modulus at 77 K were enhanced by 57.9% and 10.1%, respectively. The reported decrease in the previous work of the Young’s modulus of the modified epoxy system due to the introduction of flexible PES is offset by the increase of the modulus due to the introduction of MWCNTs. Meanwhile, the fracture toughness (KIC) at 77 K was improved by about 13.5% compared to that of the PES modified epoxy matrix when the 0.5 wt.% MWCNT content was introduced. These interesting results imply that the simultaneous usage of PES and MWCNTs in a brittle epoxy resin is a promising approach for efficiently modifying and reinforcing epoxy resins for cryogenic engineering applications.  相似文献

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes were embedded into e-beam-cured epoxy resin to improve the mechanical properties of epoxy resin. The surfaces of these carbon nanotubes were modified using a fluorination treatment to improve their dispersion and adhesion in epoxy resin. The dynamic mechanical properties of epoxy/carbon nanotube composites were investigated at various heating rates and frequencies. As an effect of fluorination treatment, the semi-ionic bond of C–F on the surface of multi-walled carbon nanotubes played an important role in the improved dispersion and adhesion of carbon nanotubes into the epoxy resin. The storage modulus and loss modulus of the composites increased with higher applied frequency. The activation energy of the composites was increased by the effects of a higher heating rate due to the slow heat transfer in the epoxy/carbon nanotube composites. Eventually, the dynamic mechanical properties of the investigated epoxy were significantly improved by the carbon nanotubes dispersed therein via the fluorination treatment.  相似文献

In the past decade extensive studies have been focused on mechanical properties of inorganic nanofiller/epoxy matrices. In this work we systematically investigated the mechanical properties of nano-alumina-filled E-54/4, 4-diaminodiphenylsulphone (DDS) epoxy resins, which were prepared via combining high-speed mixing with three-roll milling. Homogeneous dispersion of nano-alumina with small agglomerates was obtained in epoxy resin, which was confirmed using transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The static/dynamic modulus, tensile strength and fracture toughness of the nanocomposites were found to be simultaneously enhanced with addition of nano-alumina fillers. About 50% and 80% increases of K(IC) and G(IC) were achieved in nanocomposite filled with 18.4 wt% alumina nanofillers, as compared to that of the unfilled epoxy resin. Furthermore, the corresponding fracture surfaces of tensile and compact tension samples were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM) techniques in order to identify the relevant fracture mechanisms involved. Various fracture features including cavities/debonding of nanofiller, local plastic deformation as well as crack pinning/deflection were found to be operative in the presence of nano-alumina fillers.  相似文献

The focus of the present study is on energy absorption capability (EA) of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) dispersed in thermoset epoxy resin under compressive high strain rate loading. Toward this objective, high strain rate compressive behavior of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) dispersed epoxy is investigated using a split Hopkinson pressure bar. The amount of MWCNT dispersion is varied up to 3% by weight. Calculation methodology for the evaluation of EA of individual CNTs and CNTs dispersed in resins/composites is presented. Quantitative data on EA of individual CNTs and CNTs dispersed in resins under quasi-static and high strain rate loading is given.  相似文献
