Dispersion relations are calculated numerically for nonlinear slab guides with a nonlinear core and linear claddings by using the transfer matrix method (TMM). The core can have any nonlinearities while high computation efficiency can still be achieved. The authors review progress in the application of nonlinear optical phenomena to integrated optics. Essentially all integrated optics devices such as directional couplers, Mach-Zehnder interferometers, prism couplers, etc., can be used for all-optical signal processing when at least one of the waveguiding media exhibits an intensity-dependent refractive index. Experimental and theoretical results on the operating characteristics and figures of merit of such devices, as well as a new class of phenomena based on large nonlinear changes in waveguide properties will be summarized. Also discussed are measurement techniques for evaluating waveguide nonlinearities. Progress in the implementation of other nonlinear third order interactions, such as degenerate four-wave mixing and nonlinear spectroscopy, will also be reviewed  相似文献

A technique for describing the time evolution of the density matrix by diagrams is developed. When applied to time harmonic optical mixing problems, the method allows one to write down the required matrix elements by inspection of the graphs. Thermo-optic coefficients (dn/dT) determine the temperature characteristics of the nonlinear optical laser devices. These coefficients are analyzed critically by using a new model for the first time to formulate the temperature dispersion which can predict accurately the temperature bandwidths for various nonlinear interactions in a flux-grown KTP crystal. We present a simple method for the measurement of Kerr, second- and third-order dispersion coefficients in optical fibers using power and dispersion dependences of modulation instability near the zero-dispersion wavelength. We also complete the analysis by the accurate determination of the zero-dispersion wavelength of the fiber using the phase-matched four wave mixing process which occurs near this specific wavelength.  相似文献

This brief tutorial review first discusses the physical origin of nonlinear electric and magnetic susceptibilities of electro-magnetic media, from the audio through the microwave to the visible range of the electromagnetic spectrum. Wave propagation in non-linear media can be described by a combination of Maxwell's equations and the nonlinear constitutive equations. The Manley-Rowe relationships are verified for anisotropic lossless dielectrica. Microwave harmonic generation in ferrites and other materials, microwave modulation of light, light harmonic generation, light mixing and parametric conversion are all discussed from a general common viewpoint. The boundary conditions at the surface of a nonlinear medium lead to generalizations of the laws of reflection and refraction of light.  相似文献

A general theory of the coupling of electromagnetic modes in a nonlinear dielectric or magnetic medium is developed. The rate at which the mode amplitudes change, either in time or in space, is derived by a perturbation method similar to that previously used for stationary perturbations. The technique is illustrated by applying it to the problems of producing harmonic generation and parametric oscillation with a high-power laser, confocal resonator modes being used to describe mathematically both the focused laser beam and the output radiation. A comparison is made of resonant vs nonresonant structures for second harmonic generation, and threshold conditions are obtained for parametric oscillation. In addition, by combining the Manley-Rowe relations with the coupled mode equations, an alternative derivation of the symmetry properties of the nonlinear susceptibility tensor is given.  相似文献

In this paper we report on the design, numerical simulation and experimental testing of a novel dynamic dispersion compensation device based on self-phase modulation (SPM) in nonlinear fiber. The proposed all-fiber device is inherently simple and presents several unique advantages, most notably the potential for a broad-band operation covering all wave-length division multiplexing (WDM) channels of a system and the ability to address variable amounts of residual dispersion in each individual channel. Dynamic compensation ranges of up to 140 ps/nm for a single-stage and 240 ps/nm for a two-stage device are demonstrated with 40 Gb/s CS-RZ signal. It is shown that the device can operate with a minimum channel spacing of 200 GHz. For a two-stage device with inter-stage spectral filtering, simultaneous dynamic dispersion compensation (130 ps/nm for 1 dB penalty) and 2R regeneration (2 dB receiver sensitivity improvement) are demonstrated.  相似文献

Some of the key components are demonstrated to make three-dimensional (3-D) optical integrated circuits possible using polymers. Fabrication techniques of shadow reactive ion etching, shadow photolithography, and gray-level photolithography to produce complex 3-D integrated optic structures are demonstrated. Vertical waveguide bends exhibit excess losses of <0.3 dB, and vertical power splitters possess predictable output splitting ratios between multiple core levels with excess losses of <0.5 dB. Vertical polarization splitters exhibit power extinction ratios of 15 dB between the output core layers. A 1×4 vertical-horizontal power splitter is also demonstrated. Additionally, these techniques are used to integrate different polymer materials into the same optical circuit while easily solving the mode mismatch problem. To show the technique, a polymer electrooptic modulator is vertically integrated with a low-loss waveguide  相似文献
