We propose a novel hybrid optical time-division multiplexing (OTDM) approach, which contains hybrid modulation formats of return-to-zero on-off keying and return-to-zero differential-phase-shift keying, and investigate its demultiplexing performance. Compared with conventional OTDM with homogenous modulation format, the target demultiplexed channel in a hybrid OTDM signal suffers from much less degradation due to the possible crosstalk from the adjacent channels. We experimentally demonstrate 84.88- to 10.61-Gb/s hybrid OTDM demultiplexing and achieve a relatively wide switching window, which cannot be realized by using the conventional OTDM. Moreover, experimental results at 42.44 Gb/s show a much larger tolerance against timing misalignment in demultiplexing, which further validates the improved demultiplexing performance by using the hybrid OTDM scheme. 相似文献

An all-optical signal processor based on the self-wavelength conversion of Raman solitons is described. The processor consists of an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), a highly nonlinear fiber, and an optical bandpass filter. The timing-jitter-free demultiplexing of the processor was demonstrated by an 80-km transmission experiment. Error-free bit error rate (BER) performance was achieved. Transmitted fourfold optical time-division multiplexing (OTDM) signals with a large timing jitter of about 16 ps for an OTDM signal interval of 25 ps were demultiplexed to 9.95-Gb/s signals without signal degradation. 相似文献

This work presents the first field trial using the return-to-zero differential-phase-shift-keying (RZ-DPSK) modulation format. A 96/spl times/10-Gb/s RZ-DPSK field trial was conducted over a 13 100-km optical undersea path by double passing the installed 6550-km underwater link which was deployed with non-slope-matched submarine fibers. All channels performed with more than a 3-dB forward-error correction margin, including channels that accumulated over /spl plusmn/13 000ps/nm of dispersion. It is also shown that the RZ-DPSK format has similar residual dispersion and channel power tolerance for both slope-matched and non-slope-matched fibers. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the chirped RZ-DPSK format could further improve system performance by 1-2 dB. 相似文献

Saturated semiconductor optical amplifiers (SOAs) can be used as booster amplifiers for dense wavelength-division-multiplexing (DWDM) return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying (RZ-DPSK) transmitters. By introducing time interleaving (TI), both linear crosstalk induced by WDM components and nonlinear crosstalk induced by SOA nonlinearities are suppressed. Receiver sensitivities for four-channel DWDM RZ-DPSK signals with 100- and 50-GHz channel spacing were improved 2.2 and 4.2 dB, respectively, by applying proper TI between adjacent channels. Transmission at 40 Gbit/s over 140 km of dispersion-shifted fibre has been demonstrated. An optical sensitivity of 28.5 dBm (BER=109 ) was achieved at the optimum operating wavelength of 1556 nm and a power penalty of <1 dB was obtained for 1554-1557.5 nm wavelengths. We have compared experimentally the transmission performance of return-to-zero differential phase-shift keying (RZ-DPSK) with RZ-ON-OFF keying (OOK), nonreturn-to-zero differential phase-shift keying (NRZ-DPSK), and NRZ-OOK for 100/spl times/10-Gb/s transmission with a spectral efficiency of 0.22 b/s/Hz over transoceanic distances. The Q degradation of the RZ-DPSK after transmission over 9180 km was 3 dB greater than that of RZ-OOK. The experimental results clearly showed the major cause of degradation for DPSK is not cross-phase modulation but self-phase modulation. The calculated nonlinear phase noise, i.e., the Gordon-Mollenauer effect, agreed with the experimental results. A distributed-Raman-amplifier assisted erbium-doped-fiber-amplified transmission line acted well in reducing the nonlinear phase noise. 相似文献

The development of ultrashort optical pulse sources, exhibiting excellent temporal and spectral profiles, will play a crucial role in the performance of future optical time division multiplexed (OTDM) systems. In this paper, we demonstrate the difference in performance in 40- and 80-Gb/s OTDM systems between optical pulse sources based on a gain-switched laser whose pulses are compressed by a nonlinearly and linearly chirped fiber Bragg grating. The results achieved show that nonlinear chirp in the wings of the pulse leads to temporal pedestals formed on either side of the pulse when using the linearly chirped grating, whereas with the nonlinearly chirped grating, pedestals are essentially eliminated. In an OTDM system, these pedestals cause coherent interaction between neighboring channels, resulting in intensity fluctuations that lead to a power penalty of 1.5 dB (40 Gb/s) and 3.5 dB (80 Gb/s) in comparison to the case where the nonlinearly chirped grating is used. We have demonstrated a record sensitivity of -37.0 dBm (38 photons/bit) for a BER of 10/sup -9/ at 42.7-Gb/s using an integrated balanced optical front end. Results were obtained using optical preamplification of RZ-DPSK modulation and an external delay-interferometer. The OSNR requirement was measured to be 16.9 dB in a 0.1-nm bandwidth. The impact of polarization-mode dispersion (PMD) and chromatic dispersion on the optical front end performance has been measured. This paper investigates theoretically two of the dominant issues on a nonlinear optical loop mirror (NOLM) demultiplexer: the sensibility to the polarization deviation between signal and control pulses and the optimization of the switch window width. The complete nonlinear Schrodinger equations concerning the different states of polarization between signal and control lights are firstly established to study the impact of the polarization deviation on the demultiplexed signal. Considering simultaneously the channel crosstalk and the timing jitter between signal and control pulses, the switch window width of NOLM is optimized to achieve the best demultiplexing performance. The theoretical analysis shows that the polarization deviation has to be controlled less than 20° within the bit error rate (BER) of 10-9 s. The optimal amount of the pulse walkoff is a little less than half of the slot width of the OTDM system 相似文献
