Damage of structural components of hypersonic vehicles by atmospheric particles demands thorough understanding on their wear behavior. In the present work, dense ZrB2-SiC (10, 20, and 30 vol%) composites are prepared by spark plasma sintering at 55 MPa in two stages: 1400 °C for 6 min followed by 1600 °C for 2 min. With increase in SiC content, microstructures of sintered composites reveal strongly bonded ZrB2 grains with SiC particles. A combination of maximum hardness of 23 GPa, elastic modulus of 398 GPa and fracture toughness of 5.4 MPa m1/2 are obtained for the composite containing 30 vol% SiC particles. It is found that cracks are bridged or deflected by SiC particles in the composites. When the composites are subjected to SiC particle erosion at 800 °C, a 14% decrease in erosion rate is obtained with increase in SiC content from 10 to 30 vol%. The formation of large extent of boro-silicate rich viscous surface on eroded surfaces is attributed to reduced fracture or removal of ZrB2 grains of the composites with increased SiC content.  相似文献

ZrB2–SiC composites were prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS) at temperatures of 1800–2100 °C for 180–300 s under a pressure of 20 MPa and at higher temperatures of above 2100 °C without a holding time under 10 MPa. Densification, microstructure and mechanical properties of ZrB2–SiC composites were investigated. Fully dense ZrB2–SiC composites containing 20–60 mass% SiC with a relative density of more than 99% were obtained at 2000 and 2100 °C for 180 s. Below 2120 °C, microstructures consisted of equiaxed ZrB2 grains with a size of 2–5 μm and α-SiC grains with a size of 2–4 μm. Morphological change from equiaxed to elongated α-SiC grains was observed at higher temperatures. Vickers hardness of ZrB2–SiC composites increased with increasing sintering temperature and SiC content up to 60 mass%, and ZrB2–SiC composite containing 60 mass% SiC sintered at 2100 °C for 180 s had the highest value of 26.8 GPa. The highest fracture toughness was observed for ZrB2–SiC composites containing 50 mass% SiC independent of sintering temperatures.  相似文献

A series of ZrB2-ZrC-SiC composites with various SiC content from 0 to 20 vol% were prepared by reactive hot-pressing using Zr, B4C and SiC as raw materials. Self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS) occurred, and ZrC grains connected each other to form a layered structure when the SiC content is below 20 vol%. The evolution of microstructure has been discussed via reaction processes. The composite with 10 vol% SiC presents the most excellent mechanical properties (four-point bending strength: 828.6±49.9 MPa, Vickers hardness: 19.9±0.2 GPa) and finest grain size (ZrB2: 1.52 µm, ZrC: 1.07 µm, SiC: 0.79 µm) among ZrB2-ZrC-SiC composites with various SiC content from 0 to 20 vol%.  相似文献

The influences of hot pressing parameters and SiC particle size on the bulk density, the average ZrB2 grain size and Vickers hardness of ZrB2–25 vol% SiC ultrahigh temperature ceramic composites were investigated. In this paper, the Taguchi methodology (An L9 orthogonal array) was used to specify the contributions of four parameters: the hot pressing temperature, holding time, applied pressure and SiC particle size. The experimental procedure included nine tests for four parameters with three levels which were employed to optimize the process parameters. The statistical analyses recognized the hot pressing pressure and temperature as the most consequential parameters affecting the density and hardness of ZrB2–SiC composites. The SiC particle size and holding time were specified as the most effective parameters on the average ZrB2 grain size. The bulk density, average ZrB2 grain size, Vickers hardness and fracture toughness of the sample, hot pressed at optimal conditions (1850 °C, 90 min, 16 MPa and 200 nm), reached about 5.36 g/cm3, 10.03 µm, ~17.1 GPa and 5.9 MPa m1/2, respectively. The confirmation test, carried out under optimum conditions, showed that the experimental results were relatively equal to the predicted values from the Taguchi prediction model. Finally, the mechanisms of enhanced fracture toughness of the hot pressed ZrB2–SiC ceramic composites were discussed.  相似文献

ZrB2-based ceramics with SiCw were produced by hot pressing at 1750 °C for 1 h from mixed powders after adding liquid polycarbosilane. The obtained ZrB2-SiCw composites had toughness up to 7.57 MPa m1/2, which was much higher than those for monolithic ZrB2, SiC particles reinforced ZrB2 composites, and other ZrB2–SiCw composites directly sintered at high temperatures. The added liquid polycarbosilane could reduce the sintering temperatures and restrict the reaction of matrix with whisker, which led to fewer damages to the whisker and high fracture toughness.  相似文献

Laminated SiC/ZrB2 ceramic was fabricated by roll-compaction and spark plasma sintering at 1600 °C. A maximum fracture toughness of 12.3 ± 0.3 MPa m1/2 was measured for the sintered SiC/ZrB2 laminated ceramic. This significant improvement in fracture toughness can be attributed to the crack deflection along the interfacial layer and the presence of residual stresses in the sample. The effect of interlayer composition on the residual stresses was discussed in detail. It is observed that the residual thermal stress could be reduced by addition of ZrB2 particles to the SiC interlayer. The bending strength can be increased to 388 ± 44 MPa with the addition of 20 vol% ZrB2 to the SiC interlayer.  相似文献

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were used to optimize the microstructure and improve the fracture properties of hot-pressed carbon fiber-reinforced ZrB2-based ultra-high temperature ceramic composites. Microstructure analysis indicated that the introduction of MWCNTs effectively reduced the carbon fiber degradation and prevented fiber-matrix interfacial reaction during processing. Due to the presence of MWCNTs, the matrix contained fine ZrB2 grains and in-situ formed nano-sized SiC/ZrC grains. The fracture properties were evaluated using the single edge-notched beam (SENB) test. The fracture toughness and work of fracture of the Cf/ZrB2-based composite with MWCNTs were 7.0±0.4 MPa m1/2 and 379±34 J/m2, respectively, representing increases of 59% and 87% compared to those without MWCNTs. The excellent fracture properties are attributed to the moderate interfacial bonding between the fibers and matrix, which favour the toughening mechanisms, such as fiber bridging, fiber pull-out and crack deflection at interfaces.  相似文献

The current work focuses on enhancing the flexural strength and fracture toughness of zirconium diboride (ZrB2) reinforced with silicon carbide (SiC) and carbon nanotubes (CNT). The flexural strength has shown to increase by ~ 1.2 times from 322.8 MPa (for ZrB2) to 390.7 MPa and fracture toughness up to 3 times from 3.2 MPam0.5 (for ZrB2) to 9.5 MPam0.5 with the synergistic addition of both SiC and CNT in ZrB2 matrix through energy dissipating mechanisms such as deflection, branching and strong interfacial bonding evidenced from the transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A modified fractal model is used to evaluate the fracture toughness and delineate the contribution of residual stresses, and reinforcements (SiC and CNT) in enhancing the fracture toughness. Interfacial bonding, in terms of a debonding factor, was also evaluated by theoretically predicting the elastic modulus and then correlated with the microstructure along with other mechanical properties of ZrB2-SiC-CNT composites.  相似文献

SiC whisker reinfored carbide-based composites were fabricated by a reactive infiltration method by using Si as the infiltrate. Rice husks (RHs) were pyrolyzed to SiC whiskers, particles and amorphous carbon, and were then mixed with different contents of B4C as well as Mo powders. The mixtures were molded to porous preforms for the infiltration. The SiC whiskers and particles in the preform remained in the composite. Molten Si reacted with the amorphous carbon, B4C as well as Mo in the preform during the infiltration, forming newly SiC, B12(C,Si,B)3 as well as MoSi2. The upper values of elastic modulus, hardness and fracture toughness of the composites are 297.8 GPa, 16.8 ± 0.8 GPa, and 3.8 ± 0.2 MPa m1/2, respectively. The influence of the phase composition of the composites on the mechanical properties and the fracture mechanism are discussed.  相似文献

The combined effects of SiC particles and chopped carbon fibers (Cf) as well as sintering conditions on the microstructure and mechanical properties of spark plasma sintered ZrB2-based composites were investigated by Taguchi methodology. Analysis of variance was used to optimize the spark plasma sintering variables (temperature, time and pressure) and the composition (SiC/Cf ratio) in order to enhance the hardness of ZrB2–SiC–Cf composites. The sintering temperature was found as the most effective variable, with a significance of 83%, on the hardness. The hardest ZrB2-based ceramic was achievable by adding 20 vol% SiC and 10 vol% Cf after spark plasma sintering at 1850 °C for 6 min under 30 MPa. Fracture toughness improvement were related to the simultaneous presence of SiC and Cf phases as well as the in-situ formation of nano-sized interfacial ZrC particles. Crack deflection, crack branching and crack bridging were detected as the toughening mechanisms. A Vickers hardness of 14.8 GPa and an indentation fracture toughness of 6.8 MPa m1/2 were measured for the sample fabricated at optimal processing conditions.  相似文献

SiC-ZrC composites with relative density in excess of 99% were prepared by reactive hot pressing (RHP) of SiC and ZrH2 at 1800 °C for 1 h. The reaction between SiC and ZrH2 resulted in the formation of ZrC1-x. The formation process and densification behavior during RHP process were investigated. Low temperature densification of SiC-ZrC composites is attributed to the formed nonstoichiometric ZrC1-x and the removal of SiO2 impurity on the surface of SiC particles. As reinforced phase, ZrC1-x has inhibiting effect on the abnormal grain growth of SiC, resulting in homogeneous microstructure of fine SiC grains. Adding 10 wt% ZrH2 to SiC, the formed SiC-4.62 vol% ZrC composite exhibited better mechanical properties (Vickers hardness of 27.6 ± 0.7 GPa, flexure strength of 448 ± 38 MPa, fracture toughness of 6.0± 0.3 MPa·m1/2, respectively) than monolithic SiC ceramic.  相似文献

B4C-SiC composites with fine grains were fabricated with hot-pressing pyrolyzed mixtures of polycarbosilane-coated B4C powder without or with the addition of Si at 1950 °C for 1 h under the pressure of 30 MPa. SiC derived from PCS promoted the densification of B4C effectively and enhanced the fracture toughness of the composites. The sinterability and mechanical properties of the composites could be further improved by the addition of Si due to the formation of liquid Si and the elimination of free carbon during sintering. The relative density, Vickers hardness and fracture toughness of the composites prepared with PCS and 8 wt% Si reached 99.1%, 33.5 GPa, and 5.57 MPa m1/2, respectively. A number of layered structures and dislocations were observed in the B4C-SiC composites. The complicated microstructure and crack bridging by homogeneously dispersed SiC grains as well as crack deflection by SiC nanoparticles may be responsible for the improvement in toughness.  相似文献

In order to improve the fracture toughness of ZrB2 ceramics, as-received and heat treated short carbon fiber reinforced ZrB2-based composites were fabricated by hot pressing. The toughening effects of the fibers were studied by investigating the relative density, phase composition, microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites. It was found that the densification behavior, microstructure and mechanical properties of the composites were influenced by the fibers’ surface condition. The heat treated fiber was more appropriate to toughen the ZrB2-based composites, due to the high graphitization degree, low surface activity and weak interfacial bonding. As a result, the fracture toughness of the composites with heat-treated fiber is 7.62 ± 0.12 MPa m1/2, which increased by 10% as compared to the composites with as-received fiber (6.89 ± 0.16 MPa m1/2).  相似文献

Thermal diffusivity and conductivity of hot pressed ZrB2 with different amounts of B4C (0–5 wt%) and ZrB2–SiC composites (10–30 vol% SiC) were investigated experimentally over a wide range of temperature (25–1500 °C). Both thermal diffusivity and thermal conductivity were found to decrease with increase in temperature for all the hot pressed ZrB2 and ZrB2–SiC composites. At around 200 °C, thermal conductivity of ZrB2–SiC composites was found to be composition independent. Thermal conductivity of ZrB2–SiC composites was also correlated with theoretical predictions of the Maxwell–Eucken relation. The dominated mechanisms of heat transport for all hot pressed ZrB2 and ZrB2–SiC composites at room temperature were confirmed by Wiedemann–Franz analysis by using measured electrical conductivity of these materials at room temperature. It was found that electronic thermal conductivity dominated for all monolithic ZrB2 whereas the phonon contribution to thermal conductivity increased with SiC contents for ZrB2–SiC composites.  相似文献

Hot pressed monolithic ZrB2 ceramic (Z), ZrB2–20 vol% SiC composite (ZS20) and ZrB2–20 vol% SiC–10 vol% nano-graphite composite (ZS20Gn10) were investigated to determine the influence of graphite nano-flakes on the sintering process, microstructure, and mechanical properties (Vickers hardness and fracture toughness) of ZrB2–SiC composites. Hot pressing at 1850 °C for 60 min under 20 MPa resulted in a fully dense ZS20Gn10 composite (relative density: 99.6%). The results disclosed that the grain growth of ZrB2 matrix was efficiently hindered by SiC particles as well as graphite nano-flakes. The fracture toughness of ZS20Gn10 composite (7.1 MPa m1/2) was essentially improved by incorporating the reinforcements into the ZrB2 matrix, which was greater than that of Z ceramic (1.8 MPa m1/2) and ZS20 composite (3.8 MPa m1/2). The fractographical observations revealed that some graphite nano-flakes were kept in the ZS20Gn10 microstructure, besides SiC grains, which led to toughening of the composite through graphite nano-flakes pull out. Other toughening mechanisms such as crack deflection and branching as well as crack bridging, due to the thermal residual stresses in the interfaces, were also observed in the polished surface.  相似文献

High-performance B4C–SiC nanocomposites with intergranular/intragranular structure were fabricated through spark plasma sintering assisted by mechanochemistry with B4C, Si and graphite powders as raw materials. Given their unique densification behaviour, two sudden shrinkages in the densification curve were observed at two very narrow temperature ranges (1000–1040 °C and 1600–1700 °C). The first sudden shrinkage was attributed to the volume change in SiC resulting from disorder–order transformation of the SiC crystal structure. The other sudden shrinkage was attributed to the accelerated densification rate resulting from the disorder–order transformation of the crystal structure. The high sintering activity of the synthesised powders could be utilised sufficiently because of the high heating rate, so dense B4C–SiC nanocomposites were obtained at 1700 °C. In addition, the combination of high heating rate and the disordered feature of the synthesised powders prompted the formation of intergranular/intragranular structure (some SiC particles were homogeneously dispersed amongst B4C grains and some nanosized B4C and SiC particles were embedded into B4C grains), which could effectively improve the fracture toughness of the composites. The relative density, Vickers hardness and fracture toughness of the samples sintered at 1800 °C reached 99.2±0.4%, 35.8±0.9 GPa and 6.8±0.2 MPa m1/2, respectively. Spark plasma sintering assisted by mechanochemistry is a superior and reasonable route for preparing B4C–SiC composites.  相似文献

Ultrahigh temperature ZrB2-SiCw-Graphene ceramic composites are fabricated by hot pressing ZrB2-SiCw-Graphene oxide powders at 1950 °C and 30 MPa for 1 h. The microstructures of the composites are characterized by Scanning electron microscopy, Raman spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results show that multilayer graphene nanosheets are achieved by thermal reduction of graphene oxide during sintering process. Compared with monolithic ZrB2 materials, flexural strength and fracture toughness are both improved due to the synergistic effect of SiC whisker and graphene nanosheets. The toughening mechanisms mainly are the combination of SiC whisker and graphene nanosheets crack bridging, pulling out.  相似文献

The effect of nano-sized carbon black on densification behavior, microstructure, and mechanical properties of zirconium diboride (ZrB2) – silicon carbide (SiC) ceramic was studied. A ZrB2-based ceramic matrix composite, reinforced with 20 vol% SiC and doped with 10 vol% nano-sized carbon black, was hot pressed at 1850 °C for 1 h under 20 MPa. For comparison, a monolithic ZrB2 ceramic and a ZrB2–20 vol% SiC composite were also fabricated by the same processing conditions. By adding 20 vol% SiC, the sintered density slightly improved to ~93%, compared to the relative density of ~90% of the monolithic one. However, adding 10 vol% nano-sized carbon black to ZrB2–20 vol% SiC composite meaningfully increased the sinterability, as a relatively fully dense sample was obtained (RD=~100%). The average grain size of sintered ZrB2 was significantly affected and controlled by adding carbon black together with SiC acting as effective grain growth inhibitors. The Vickers hardness, flexural strength and fracture toughness of SiC reinforced and carbon black doped composites were found to be remarkably higher than those of monolithic ZrB2 ceramic. Moreover, unreacted carbon black additives in the composite sample resulted in the activation of some toughening mechanisms such as crack deflections.  相似文献

ZrB2–SiC–BN ceramics were fabricated by hot-pressing under argon at 1800 °C and 23 MPa pressure. The microstructure, mechanical and oxidation resistance properties of the composite were investigated. The flexural strength and fracture toughness of ZrB2–SiC–BN (40 vol%ZrB2–25 vol%SiC–35 vol%BN) composite were 378 MPa and 4.1 MPa m1/2, respectively. The former increased by 34% and the latter decreased by 15% compared to those of the conventional ZrB2–SiC (80 vol%ZrB2–20 vol%SiC). Noticeably, the hardness decreased tremendously by about 67% and the machinability improved noticeably compared to the relative property of the ZrB2–SiC ceramic. The anisothermal and isothermal oxidation behaviors of ZrB2–SiC–BN composites from 1100 to 1500 °C in air atmosphere showed that the weight gain of the 80 vol%ZrB2–20 vol%SiC and 43.1 vol%ZrB2–26.9 vol%SiC–30 vol%BN composites after oxidation at 1500 °C for 5 h were 0.0714 and 0.0268 g/cm2, respectively, which indicates that the addition of the BN enhances oxidation resistance of ZrB2–SiC composite. The improved oxidation resistance is attributed to the formation of ample liquid borosilicate film below 1300 °C and a compact film of zirconium silicate above 1300 °C. The formed borosilicate and zirconium silicate on the surface of ZrB2–SiC–BN ceramics act as an effective barriers for further diffusion of oxygen into the fresh interface of ZrB2–SiC–BN.  相似文献

This study examined the effects of post-sintering heat treatment on enhancing the toughness of SiCf/SiC composites. Commercially available Tyranno® SiC fabrics with contiguous dual ‘PyC (inner)-SiC (outer)’ coatings deposited on the SiC fibers were infiltrated with a SiC + 10 wt% Al2O3-Y2O3 slurry by electrophoretic deposition. SiC green tapes were stacked between the slurry-infiltrated fabrics to control the matrix volume fraction. Densification of approximately 94% ρtheo was achieved by hot pressing at 1750 °C, 20 MPa for 2 h in an Ar atmosphere. Sintered composites were then subjected to isothermal annealing treatment at 1100, 1250, 1350, and 1750 °C for 5 h in Ar. The correlation between the flexural behavior and microstructure was explained in terms of the in situ-toughened matrix, phase evolution in the sintering additive, role of dual interphases and observed fracture mechanisms. Extensive fractography analysis revealed interfacial debonding at the hybrid interfaces and matrix cracking as the key fracture modes, which were responsible for the toughening behavior in the annealed SiCf/SiC composites.  相似文献
