Composite phase change materials (PCM) for latent heat thermal energy storage were made by mixing two different kinds of exfoliated graphite nanoplatelets (xGnP-1 and xGnP-15) into paraffin wax. Direct casting and two roll milling were used to prepare samples. The investigation on the thermal and electrical conductivity of nanocomposites with these two nanoplatelets was performed. Higher thermal conductivity of composite PCM can be achieved with nanofillers of larger aspect ratio, better orientation and lower interface density. The thermal physical properties of the nanocomposites were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry and thermal gravimetric analysis. It was found that the latent heat of the nanocomposites was not adversely affected by the presence of xGnP nanoplatelets and the thermal stability improved.  相似文献

Conventional phase change materials (PCMs) are already well known for their high thermal capacity and constant working temperature for thermal storage applications. Nevertheless, their low thermal conductivity (around 1 W m−1 K−1) leads to low and decreasing heat storage and discharge powers. Up to now, this major drawback has drastically inhibited their possible applications in industrial or domestic fields. The use of graphite to enhance the thermal conductivity of those materials has been already proposed in the case of paraffin but the corresponding applications are restricted to low-melting temperatures (below 150 °C). For many applications, especially for solar concentrated technologies, this temperature range is too low. In the present paper, new composites made of salts or eutectics and graphite flakes, in a melting temperature range of 200-300 °C are presented in terms of stability, storage capacity and thermal conductivity. The application of those materials to thermal storage is illustrated through simulated results according to different possible designs. The synergy between the storage composite properties and the interfacial area available for heat transfer with the working fluid is presented and discussed.  相似文献

A composite based on paraffin, styrene–butadiene–styrene (SBS) triblock copolymer and exfoliated graphite (EG) is prepared. In this composite, paraffin undergoes solid–liquid phase change in the SBS network, and there is no leakage of it even in the state of melting. The composite exhibits high thermal conductivity and nearly 80% of the latent heat of fusion per unit mass of the paraffin.  相似文献

Thermal characterization of Phase Change Materials (PCMs) based on linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), paraffin wax (W) and expanded graphite (EG) is reported in this paper. Investigated PCMs showed high potential for application in energy storage systems. The latent heat, Lm, sensible heat Qsens, and the ability of the prepared PCMs to store and release thermal energy were investigated using specific home-made equipment based on the transient guarded hot plane method (TGHPT). The sensible heat of PCM containing 40 wt.% of paraffin wax was investigated in the temperature range 25–35 °C, they exhibited a drop in Qsens from 31 to 24 J/g depending on the concentration of EG. A similar decrease in sensible heat with increased loading of EG was observed for PCMs containing 50 wt.% of EG.The storage and release of thermal energy during phase change which is associated with the latent heat of the materials were investigated within the temperature range 20–50 °C. PCMs containing 40 wt.% of paraffin wax exhibited latent heat of 36 J/g, whereas the latent heat of PCMs containing 50 wt.% of paraffin wax was 49 J/g. The addition of EG decreased the time needed to melt and solidify PCMs due to increase in thermal conductivity of PCMs with increase in EG content. This behavior was confirmed by the thermal conductivity measurements, where thermal conductivity increased from 0.252 for sample without EG to 1.329 W/m × °C for PCM containing 15 wt.% of EG.The reproducibility of storage and release of thermal energy by PCMs was demonstrated by subjecting them to repeated heating and cooling cycles (over 150 cycles).  相似文献

The continuous increase in the level of greenhouse gas emissions and the rise in fuel prices are the main driving forces behind the efforts for more effectively utilize various sources of renewable energy. In many parts of the world, direct solar radiation is considered to be one of the most prospective sources of energy. In this study, the thermal performance of a phase change thermal storage unit is analyzed and discussed. The storage unit is a component of ten pieced solar air collectors heating system being developed for space heating of a greenhouse and charging of PCM. CaCl26H2O was used as PCM in thermal energy storage with a melting temperature of 29 °C. Hot air delivered by ten pieced solar air collector is passed through the PCM to charge the storage unit. The stored heat is utilized to heat ambient air before being admitted to a greenhouse. This study is based on experimental results of the PCM employed to analyze the transient thermal behavior of the storage unit during the charge and discharge periods. The proposed size of collectors integrated PCM provided about 18–23% of total daily thermal energy requirements of the greenhouse for 3–4 h, in comparison with the conventional heating device.  相似文献

Form-stable paraffin phase change materials (PCMs), in which the paraffin as a latent heat storage material and the polyolefins as a supporting material, have to be encapsulated because of the paraffin leakage and lipophilicity. A novel microencapsulated PCM in which form-stable paraffin is encapsulated into inorganic silica gel polymer is prepared successfully by in situ polymerization. A differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) is used to measure the thermal properties of the PCM. Moreover, the Washburn equation associated with the wetting properties of powder materials, is used to test the hydrophilic–lipophilic properties of PCM. The results indicate that the optimum microencapsulated PCM is endowed with good hydrophilicity, and its specific enthalpy maintains 123.78 J g−1.  相似文献

Fatty acids such as stearic acid (SA), palmitic acid (PA), myristic acid (MA), and lauric acid (LA) are promising phase change materials (PCMs) for latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) applications, but high cost is the most drawback which limits the utility area of them in thermal energy storage. The use of fatty acids as form-stable PCM will increase their feasibilities in practical LHTES applications due to reduced cost of the energy storage system. In this regard, a series of fatty acid/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blends, SA/PMMA, PA/PMMA, MA/PMMA, and LA/PMMA were prepared as new kinds of form-stable PCMs by encapsulation of fatty acids into PMMA which acts as supporting material. The blends were prepared at different mass fractions of fatty acids (50, 60, 70, 80, and 90% w/w) to reach maximum encapsulation ratio. All blends were subjected to leakage test by heating the blends over the melting temperature of the PCM. The blends that do not allow leakage of melted PCM were identified as form-stable PCMs. The form-stable fatty acid/PMMA (80/20 wt.%) blends were characterized using optic microscopy (OM), viscosimetry, and Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy methods, and the results showed that the PMMA was compatible with the fatty acids. In addition, thermal characteristics such as melting and freezing temperatures and latent heats of the form-stable PCMs were measured by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) technique and indicated that they had good thermal properties. On the basis of all results, it was concluded that form-stable fatty acid/PMMA blends had important potential for some practical LHTES applications such as under floor space heating of buildings and passive solar space heating of buildings by using wallboard, plasterboard or floor impregnated with a form-stable PCM due to their satisfying thermal properties, easily preparing in desired dimensions, direct usability without needing an add encapsulation and eliminating the thermal resistance caused by shell and thus reducing cost of LHTES system.  相似文献

In order to study the changes in latent heat of fusion and melting temperature of calcium chloride hexahydrate (CaCl2·6H2O) inorganic salt as a latent heat storage material, a thousand accelerated thermal cycle tests have been conducted. The effect of thermal cycling and the reliability in terms of the changing of the melting temperature using a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) is determined. It has been noticed that the CaCl2·6H2O melts between a stable range of temperature and has shown small variations in the latent heat of fusion during the thermal cycling process. Thus, it can be a promising phase change material (PCM) for heating and cooling applications for various building/storage systems.  相似文献

Thermal energy storage (TES) is a technology that stocks thermal energy by heating or cooling a storage medium so that the stored energy can be used later for heating and cooling applications and for power generation. TES has recently attracted increasing interest to thermal applications such as space and water heating, waste heat utilisation, cooling, and air conditioning. Phase change materials (PCMs) used for the storage of thermal energy as latent heat are special types of advanced materials that substantially contribute to the efficient use and conservation of waste heat and solar energy. This paper provides a comprehensive review on the development of latent heat storage (LHS) systems focused on heat transfer and enhancement techniques employed in PCMs to effectively charge and discharge latent heat energy, and the formulation of the phase change problem. The main categories of PCMs are classified and briefly described, and heat transfer enhancement technologies, namely dispersion of low‐density materials, use of porous materials, metal matrices and encapsulation, incorporation of extended surfaces and fins, utilisation of heat pipes, cascaded storage, and direct heat transfer techniques, are also discussed in detail. Additionally, a two‐dimensional heat transfer simulation model of an LHS system is developed using the control volume technique to solve the phase change problem. Furthermore, a three‐dimensional numerical simulation model of an LHS is built to investigate the quasi‐steady state and transient heat transfer in PCMs. Finally, several future research directions are provided.  相似文献

We have developed an experimental ventilation system that features direct heat exchange between ventilation air and granules containing a phase change material (PCM). Measurement of outlet air temperature when the inlet air temperature was periodically varied to simulate changes of outdoor ambient air temperature showed that the outlet air temperature was stabilized and remained within the phase change temperature range. This effect is expected to be useful in practical ventilation systems. The potential of such systems for reducing ventilation load was examined through computer simulation for eight representative cities of Japan. This revealed how different temperature conditions would affect required heat storage capacity.  相似文献

Designing a cost-effective phase change thermal storage system involves two challenging aspects: one is to select a suitable storage material and the other is to increase the heat transfer between the storage material and the heat transfer fluid as the performance of the system is limited by the poor thermal conductivity of the latent heat storage material. When used for storing energy in concentrated solar thermal power plants, the solar field operation temperature will determine the PCM melting temperature selection. This paper reviews concentrated solar thermal power plants that are currently operating and under construction. It also reviews phase change materials with melting temperatures above 300 °C, which potentially can be used as energy storage media in these plants. In addition, various techniques employed to enhance the thermal performance of high temperature phase change thermal storage systems have been reviewed and discussed. This review aims to provide the necessary information for further research in the development of cost-effective high temperature phase change thermal storage systems.  相似文献

An economic evaluation of a latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) system for large scale concentrating solar power (CSP) applications is conducted. The concept of embedding gravity-assisted wickless heat pipes (thermosyphons) within a commercial-scale LHTES system is explored through use of a thermal network model. A new design is proposed for charging and discharging a large-scale LHTES system. The size and cost of the LHTES system is estimated and compared with a two-tank sensible heat energy storage (SHTES) system. The results suggest that LHTES with embedded thermosyphons is economically competitive with current SHTES technology, with the potential to reduce capital costs by at least 15%. Further investigation of different phase change materials (PCMs), thermosyphon working fluids, and system configurations has the potential to lead to designs that can further reduce capital costs beyond those reported in this study.  相似文献

Phase change materials (PCM) are able to store thermal energy when becoming liquids and to release it when freezing. Recently the use of PCM materials for thermal energy storage (TES) at high temperature for Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) technology has been widely studied. One of the main investigated problems is the improvement of their low thermal conductivity. This paper looks at the current state of research in the particular field of thermal conductivity enhancement (TCE) mechanisms of PCM to be used as TES. This work considers a numerical approach to evaluate the performance of a group of TCE solutions composed by particular configurations of two of the principal TCE systems found on the literature: finned pipes and conductive foams. The cases are compared against a single PCM case, used as reference. Three different grades of graphite foams have been studied, presenting a charge time 100 times lower than the reference case for the same capacity. For fins two materials are analyzed: carbon steel and aluminum. The charge times of fin cases are from 3 to 15 times faster, depending on the amount and type of material employed. The internal mechanisms are analyzed to understand the results and locate possible improvement.  相似文献

Using phase change materials (PCM) as thermal energy storage material in metal hydride reactor bed is an effective method to store the heat emitted during hydrogen charging and retrieving it later during discharging. The present work examines the effect of a PCM on the behaviour of the metal hydride in the reactor bed. A two-dimensional model was developed to describe the mass and heat transfer inside the metal hydride and the PCM as well as the interaction between them. The results were compared with other numerical simulation and experimental data. In the simulations, thermal conductivity and the latent heat were varied in order to evaluate the effect of these parameters on the kinetics of absorption, desorption and melting of the phase change material.  相似文献

A series of polyol acetal derivatives were synthesized through condensation reactions of aromatic aldehyde with polyols, including sorbitol, mannitol, xylitol, and pentaerythritol. They were examined as gelators in the formation of paraffin-based shape-stabilized phase change materials (PCMs), in which 1,3:2,4-di-(4-methyl) benzylidene sorbitol (MDBS) exhibited excellent thermal stability. Three-dimensional netted structural phase change materials were obtained by paraffin doped with different gelators, which were thermally stable so that no leakage of paraffin occurs even under higher temperature than the melting point of paraffin. It was found that PCMs doped with 3 wt% expanded and exfoliated graphite (EG) exhibited better thermal conductivity, similar phase change temperature and heat storage density.  相似文献

Cascaded latent heat storage for parabolic trough solar power plants   总被引:6,自引:0,他引:6
The current revival of solar thermal electricity generating systems (SEGS) unveils the still existing need of economic thermal energy storages (TES) for the temperature range from 250 °C to 500 °C. The TES-benchmark for parabolic trough power plants is the direct two tank storage, as it was used at the SEGS I plant near Barstow (USA). With the introduction of expensive synthetic heat transfer oil, capable to increase the operating temperature from former 300 °C up to 400 °C, the direct storage technology became uneconomical. Cascaded latent heat storages (CLHS) are one possible TES alternative, which are marked by a minimum of necessary storage material. The use of a cascade of multiple phase change materials (PCM) shall ensure the optimal utilization of the storage material. This paper reports experimental and numerical results from the investigation of cascaded latent heat storages with alkali nitrate salts like NaNO3, KNO3 and others more. The experiments were conducted with vertical shell and tube type heat exchanger devices under realistic operation parameters. The experimental results were used for a numerical model to simulate different CLHS configurations. Dymola/Modelica was used to conduct the simulation. The outcome of this work shows on the one hand, that the design of CLHS for this temperature range is more complex than for the temperature range up to 100 °C. And on the other hand, the low heat conductivity of available PCM is an obstacle which must be overcome to make full use of this promising storage technology.  相似文献

The size of a cooling inventory is generally designed based on which size can endure the excessive heat load situations that occur sporadically. As a result, cooling systems are often too large for most normal driving modes. There have been numerous efforts to downsize the automotive engine cooling system using novel concepts and strategies. Efficient cooling in automobiles is beneficial in reducing harmful emissions as well as improving fuel economy. A simulation was conducted to validate the feasibility of using a novel cooling strategy that utilized the heat load averaging capabilities of a phase change material (PCM). Three prototypes were designed: full-size, down-sized, and a down-sized prototype with a heat accumulator containing the PCM inside. When the full-size of the cooling inventory was down-sized by 30%, this smaller design failed to dissipate the peak heat load and consequently led to a significant increase in the coolant temperature, around 25 °C greater than that in the full-size system. However, the peak heat load was successfully averaged out in the down-sized system with a heat accumulator. This novel cooling concept will contribute to a substantial reduction in the cooling system in terms of volume and hangover.  相似文献

This paper presents a numerical investigation on the thermal performance of a solar latent heat storage unit composed of rectangular slabs combined with a flat-plate solar collector. The rectangular slabs of the storage unit are vertically arranged and filled with phase change material (PCM: RT50) dispersed with high conductive nanoparticles (Al2O3). A heat transfer fluid (HTF: water) goes flow in the solar collector and receives solar thermal energy form the absorber area, then circulates between the slabs to transfer heat by forced convection to nanoparticle-enhanced phase change material (NEPCM). A numerical model based on the finite volume method and the conservation equations was developed to model the heat transfer and flow processes in the storage unit. The developed model was validated by comparing the obtained results with the experimental, numerical and theoretical results published in the literature. The thermal performance of the investigated latent heat storage unit combined with the solar collector was evaluated under the meteorological data of a representative day of the month of July in Marrakesh city, Morocco. The effect of the dispersion of high conductive nanoparticles on the thermal behavior and storage performance was also evaluated and compared with the case of base PCM without additives.  相似文献

In this paper, a mathematical model of shell-and-tube latent heat thermal energy storage (LHTES) unit of two-dimension of three phase change materials (PCMs) named PCM1, PCM2 and PCM3 with different high melting temperatures (983 K, 823 K and 670 K, respectively) and heat transfer fluid (HTF: air) with flowing resistance and viscous dissipation based on the enthalpy method has been developed. Instantaneous solid–liquid interface positions and liquid fractions of PCMs as well as the effects of inlet temperatures of the air and lengths of the shell-and-tube LHTES unit on melting times of PCMs were numerically analyzed. The results show that melting rates of PCM3 are the fastest and that of PCM1 are the slowest both x, r directions. It is also found that the melting times of PCM1, PCM2 and PCM3 decrease with increase in inlet temperatures of the air. Moreover, with increase in inlet temperatures of the air, decreasing degree of their melting times are different, decreasing degree of the melting time of PCM1 is the biggest and that of PCM3 is the smallest. Considering actual application of solar thermal power, we suggest that the optimum lengths are L1 = 250 mm, L2 = 400 mm, L3 = 550 mm (L = 1200 mm) which corresponds to the same melting times of PCM1, PCM2 and PCM3 are about 3230 s and inlet temperature of the air is about 1200 K. The present analysis provides theoretical guidance for designing optimization of the shell-and-tube LHTES unit with three PCMs for solar thermal power.  相似文献
