An experiment was carried out to examine the effects of feeding Fusarium toxin-contaminated wheat (8.21 mg deoxynivalenol (DON) and 0.09 mg zearalenone (ZON) per kg dry matter) at different feed intake levels on the biotransformation and carry-over of DON in dairy cows. For this purpose, 14 ruminal and duodenal fistulated dairy cows were fed a diet containing 60% concentrate with a wheat portion of 55% (Fusarium toxin-contaminated wheat (mycotoxin period) or control wheat (control period)) and the ration was completed with maize- and grass silage (50 : 50) on a dry matter basis. Daily DON intakes ranged from 16.6 to 75.6 mg in the mycotoxin period at dry matter intakes of 5.6-20.5 kg. DON was almost completely biotransformed to de-epoxy DON (94-99%) independent of the DON/feed intake, and the flow of DON and de-epoxy DON at the duodenum related to DON intake ranged from 12 to 77% when the Fusarium toxin-contaminated wheat was fed. In the serum samples, de-epoxy DON was detected in the range of 4-28 ng ml-1 in the mycotoxin period, while concentrations of DON were all below the detection limit. The daily excretion of DON and de-epoxy DON in the milk of cows fed the contaminated wheat varied between 1 and 10 µg and between 14 and 104 µg, respectively. The total carry-over rates as the ratio between the daily excretion of DON and de-epoxy DON into milk and DON intake were in the ranges of 0.0001-0.0002 and 0.0004-0.0024, respectively. Total carry-over rates of DON as DON and de-epoxy DON into the milk increased significantly with increasing milk yield. In the urine samples, de-epoxy DON was the predominant substance as compared with DON with a portion of the total DON plus de-epoxy DON concentration to 96% when the Fusarium toxin-contaminated wheat was fed, whereas the total residues of DON plus de-epoxy DON in faeces ranged between 2 and 18% of DON intake in the mycotoxin period. The degree of glucuronidation of de-epoxy DON was found to be approximately 100% in serum. From 33 to 80% of DON and from 73 to 92% of de-epoxy DON, and from 21 to 92% of DON and from 86 to 100% of de-epoxy DON were glucuronidated in the milk and urine, respectively. It is concluded that DON is very rapidly biotransformed to de-epoxy DON in the rumen and only negligible amounts of DON and de-epoxy DON were transmitted into the milk within the range of 5.6-20.5 kg day-1 dry matter intake and milk yields (fat corrected milk) between 10 and 42 kg day-1.  相似文献

Effects of chop length (shorter = 10 mm or longer = 19 mm) of alfalfa silage and corn silage were determined in 16 midlactation Holstein cows using a 4 × 4 Latin square design with a 2 × 2 arrangement of treatments. Experimental periods were 21 d long and consisted of 14 d of adaptation and 7 d of sampling. Cows received total mixed ration containing (dry matter basis) 44.0% barley grain-based energy supplement, 12.6% protein supplement, and 21.7% longer chop or shorter chop alfalfa silage and 21.7% longer chop or shorter chop corn silage. Reducing the chop length of alfalfa silage and corn silage reduced the average geometric particle length from 14.4 to 11.0 mm and from 14.2 to 10.4 mm, respectively. Reducing the chop length of both silages reduced the proportion of the diets retained by the 8-and 19-mm screen of the Penn State Particle Separator from 55.0 to 46.0% of dry matter. Reducing the alfalfa chop length increased total rumen volatile fatty acids at 4 to 5 h after feeding but did not affect rumen pH at 4 to 5 h after feeding, feed intake, and milk production. Reducing the corn silage chop length increased dry matter intake from 22.3 to 23.2 kg/d, increased rumen pH at 4 to 5 h after feeding from 6.12 to 6.20, but did not alter rumen volatile fatty acids at 4 to 5 h after feeding or milk production. Daily milk yield, milk fat percentage, and milk protein percentage averaged 38.2 kg/d, 2.62%, and 3.29%, respectively, across all diets. The low milk fat percentages suggest that all diets induced subacute ruminal acidosis (SARA), whereas the rumen pH did not indicate SARA. This discrepancy could be due to a difference in the time of rumen pH measurement and the time of the lowest rumen pH. Hence, the pH data need to be interpreted with caution. Diets could have induced SARA, because for all experimental diets the content of forage neutral detergent fiber was lower than recommended for barley grain-based diets.  相似文献

A daily pattern of feed intake, milk synthesis, and plasma metabolites and hormones occurs in dairy cows fed a total mixed ration once or twice a day. The objective of this study was to determine if feeding multiple rations within a day, complementing these rhythms, would improve milk production. Twelve Holstein cows were used in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design with 21-d periods. Cows were housed in tie stalls with feed tubs, and feed weight was recorded every 10 s for observation of feeding behavior. Rations were a low fiber and high fermentable starch ration [LFHS; 27.4% neutral detergent fiber (NDF) and 31.7% starch based on 55.7% corn silage and 14.1% steam-flaked corn], a high fiber and low fermentable starch ration (HFLS; 31.7% NDF and 22.3% starch based on 44% corn silage, 26.3% alfalfa haylage, and no steam-flaked corn), and a total mixed ration that was a 1:3 ratio of LFHS and HFLS (30.7% NDF, 24.5% starch). The control treatment (CON) cows were fed the total mixed ration at 0700 h, the high/low treatment (HL) fed HFLS ration at 0700 h and LFHS ration at 2200 h, and the low/high (LH) treatment fed LFHS ration at 0700 h and HFLS ration at 1100 h (LFHS and HFLS rations fed at a 1:3 ratio). No effect was found of treatment on daily milk, but LH decreased milk fat concentration and yield compared with HL (0.2 percentage units and 0.24 kg, respectively). Daily dry matter and NDF intake and total-tract digestibility did not differ between treatments. The HL treatment reduced intake at the morning-conditioned meal after feeding and reduced intake before the evening feeding. A treatment by time of day interaction was found for fecal NDF and indigestible NDF concentration, blood urea nitrogen (BUN), plasma insulin, and fatty acid concentration, and body temperature. The CON and LH treatments increased the daily amplitude of fecal NDF by 1.0 and 1.1 percentage units compared with HL. Plasma insulin was higher in HL than CON at 0100 and 0400 h, but lower at 1300 and 1900 h. Plasma fatty acids were higher for CON than HL at 0700 h and HL was lower than LH at 0400 and 1900 h. Plasma BUN was higher for HL than control at 0100 h, but lower at 1000 h. Body temperature in CON and HL treatments followed a similar diurnal pattern, whereas body temperature for LH was lower than that of HL treatment at 1300 and 2300 h. No daily rhythm was found of fecal indigestible NDF concentration, plasma glucose, or fatty acids detected in the HL treatment, and the amplitude of plasma insulin and BUN was lower for HL compared with CON (70 and 60% decrease, respectively). In conclusion, feeding 2 rations that differ in fiber and fermentable starch modifies diurnal rhythms in dairy cows. Furthermore, feeding a high fiber and low fermentable starch ration during the high intake period of the day may stabilize nutrient absorption across the day.  相似文献

The objective of this experiment was to compare the effects of calcareous marine algae (CMA; Acid Buf, Celtic Sea Minerals) with a limestone-based control on feed intake, milk production, energy balance, serum mineral metabolites, and inflammatory markers in transition dairy cows. Twenty-two multiparous and 10 primiparous cows were assigned to 2 treatments from 25 d before expected parturition until 42 d postpartum. Cows were assigned to treatment according to a randomized complete block design based on parity, pre-experimental body condition score, previous 305-d milk yield, and either fat + protein yield (for multiparous cows) or predicted transmitting ability for milk yield and fat + protein yield (for primiparous cows). Cows were fed a negative dietary cation-anion difference [?50 mEq/kg] total mixed ration (TMR) based on corn silage, grass silage, and straw during the prepartum period and a 50:50 forage:concentrate TMR based on grass silage, corn silage, and concentrate during the postpartum period. The 2 dietary treatments consisted of a control (CON), which contained limestone as the primary calcium source, and CMA, in which limestone was replaced by CMA at 0.42% and 0.47% of dry matter for the pre- and postpartum periods, respectively. The dietary treatments were fed as 2 different concentrate pellets added to the TMR. Cows fed the CMA diet had higher dry matter intake in both the prepartum (+1.08 kg) and postpartum (+0.94 kg) periods compared with cows fed the CON diet. Fat yield (+0.11 kg), fat concentration (+0.43%), and 4% fat-corrected milk (+1.56 kg) were higher in cows fed CMA than in cows fed CON. The concentration of plasma serum amyloid A was reduced and that of serum P was increased on the CMA treatment compared with the CON treatment. These findings demonstrate the benefits of supplementing CMA to dairy cows during the transition period compared with a CON treatment containing limestone as the primary Ca source.  相似文献

Animal responses to dietary treatment may interact with metabolic state, which differs for cows across a wide range of milk yield. Responses to dietary saturated vs. unsaturated fatty acid (FA) supplement was evaluated using 32 multiparous Holstein cows arranged in a crossover design with 14-d periods. Treatments were 2.5% FA from unsaturated FA (calcium salts of palm FA) or saturated FA (prilled, hydrogenated free FA). Unsaturated FA treatments decreased dry matter intake (0.8 kg/d) and time spent ruminating (25 min/d) compared with saturated FA treatment. Treatments did not differ in milk or 3.5% fat-corrected milk yield. Intake and milk yield responses were not related to milk yield across cows. Saturated FA treatment increased milk protein and lactose concentrations, but treatment did not affect yield of milk components. Saturated FA treatment increased insulin over 25% and decreased nonesterified FA nearly 20% with no effect on plasma somatotropin, glucose, or β-hydroxybutyrate concentrations. Milk protein concentration and yield responses to treatment were positively correlated with pretrial fat-corrected milk yield. Milk protein response was not related to insulin response, supporting the importance of insulin sensitivity in control of milk protein synthesis. Unsaturated FA treatment decreased dry matter intake and rumination time compared with saturated FA treatment, consistent with reports of unsaturated fat increasing satiety and decreasing gut motility. Decreased milk protein synthesis by fat supplementation may be related to FA saturation and milk yield of cows.  相似文献

The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the effect on dry matter intake (DMI), milk yield, milk composition, body weight (BW), and body condition score (BCS) change of cows offered diets differing in energy density in the last 4 wk of gestation and in the first 8 wk of lactation. Three diets (grass silage:straw, 75:25 on a dry matter basis (SS), grass silage (S), and grass silage + 3 kg concentrate daily (C)) precalving, and two diets (4 kg [LC] or 8 kg [HC] concentrate daily + grass silage ad libitum) postcalving were combined in a 3 x 2 factorial design. Sixty Holstein-Friesian cows entering their second lactation were blocked according to expected calving date and BCS into groups of six and were then allocated at random to the treatments. Individual feeding started 4 wk prior to the expected calving date and measurements were made until the end of the 8th wk of lactation. Mean DMI differed between each of the precalving treatments (7.4, 8.1, and 9.9 kg/d for SS, S, and C, respectively) in the precalving period. The DMI also differed between SS and C for wk 1 to 8 (13.5 and 14.2 kg/d) postcalving. Postcalving, milk (24.2, 26.2, and 28.2 kg/d), fat (933, 1063, and 1171 g/d), and protein (736, 797, and 874 g/d) yields differed between SS, S, and C, respectively. The BCS changes differed between SS and C (-0.09 and 0.12 of a BCS) in the precalving period and between SS and S compared with C (0.02, 0.06, and -0.26 of a BCS) for wk 1 to 8 postcalving. The BW change differed between SS and S compared with C in both wk 1 to 4 (-0.23, -0.37, and -1.25 kg/d) and wk 1 to 8 (0.18, 0.10, and -0.58 kg/ d) postcalving. The BW and BCS were lower at calving for cows on SS compared with C. The greater amount of concentrate supplement postcalving increased DMI, yields of milk, fat, and protein and decreased BW loss in the first 8 wk of lactation. In conclusion, these results indicate that a greater energy density diet in the final 4 wk of the dry period improves cow production in early lactation.  相似文献

Ninety autumn-calving Holstein dairy cows [45 primiparous and 45 multiparous (mean parity, 3.1)] were allocated to 1 of 3 dietary crude protein (CP) concentrations: 173, 144, or 114 g of CP/kg of DM, from calving until d 150 of lactation. On d 151, half of the animals in each treatment were allocated an alternative dietary protein concentration. Half of the animals receiving 114 g of CP/kg of DM went onto 144 g of CP/kg of DM; half of the animals receiving 144 g of CP/kg of DM went onto 173 g of CP/kg of DM; and half of the animals receiving 173 g of CP/kg of DM went onto 144 g of CP/kg of DM, with the remaining animals staying on their original treatment. This resulted in 6 treatments in the mid to late lactation period: 114/114, 144/144, 173/173, 114/144, 144/173, and 173/144 g of CP/kg of DM. An increase in dietary CP concentration significantly increased milk, fat, and protein yield in early lactation (d 1 to 150). Dry matter intake was also increased with increased dietary protein concentration; however, this was not significant between 144 and 173 g of CP/kg of DM. Increased dietary CP significantly increased plasma urea, albumin, and total protein concentrations but had no significant effect on NEFA, leptin, or IGF-1 concentrations. Decreasing the dietary CP concentration in mid-late lactation (d 151 to 305) from 173 to 144 g/kg of DM had no significant effect on milk yield, dry matter intake, or milk fat and protein yield, compared with animals that remained on 173 g of CP/kg of DM throughout lactation. Increasing dietary CP concentration from 144 to 173 g/kg of DM significantly increased dry matter intake compared with animals that remained on the 144 g of CP/kg of DM throughout lactation. There were no significant dietary treatment effects on live weight or body condition score change throughout the experiment. Results of this study indicate that high protein diets (up to 173 g of CP/kg of DM) improved feed intake and animal performance in early lactation (up to d 150), but thereafter, protein concentration can be reduced to 144 g of CP/kg of DM with no detrimental effects on animal performance.  相似文献

The effects of 8 diploid perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) cultivars on dry matter (DM) intake, DM digestibility, and milk yield (MY) of dairy cows were evaluated in the summer of 2000 and 2001. Each summer, herbage was harvested daily and stall-fed to 12 dairy cows during six 2-wk periods. Six cultivars were fed in 3 periods (1, 3, and 5) according to a double 3 × 3 Latin square design. In the other periods (2, 4, and 6), 2 cultivars were fed in a repeated measurement design. Herbage mass and leaf blades in the sward canopy varied among cultivars, but differences were not consistent between years. The largest differences in herbage composition were found in water-soluble carbohydrate content, followed by crude protein content. only small differences were found in the neutral detergent fiber (NDF) content. A higher water-soluble carbohydrate content was found in 2 cultivars in both years, whereas ranking of cultivars in crude protein and NDF content was not consistent with years. Dry matter intake and MY were not affected by cultivar. In both years, DM digestiblity was high (>77%), with very small differences among cultivars in 2000 (<0.5%) and larger differences in 2001 (up to 4%). This was associated with a delayed heading date in 2001, resulting in larger differences in leaf blades and NDF content among cultivars. It may be concluded that the 8 cultivars used in our experiments do not provide grass breeders with encouraging evidence to include selection criteria for an increased DM intake, DM digestibility, and MY in their grass breeding schemes.  相似文献

Reproduction and milk production responses were compared between dairy cows offered a high (HPA; n = 453 in 4 replicates) or low (LPA; n = 317 in 3 replicates) pasture allowance for the first 14 d after the planned start of mating (d 0 of experiment) in 2 seasonal, pasture-based dairy herds. Estimated pasture dry matter intake (DMI) between d −1 and 13 were 14.3 ± 2.8 and 8.0 ± 1.7 kg of DM/cow per day for HPA and LPA cows, respectively. The LPA cows produced 22% less energy-corrected milk during the 14-d feeding treatment period, and milk yield remained less in LPA cows at d 53 despite all cows receiving pasture allowances to support DMI of 16 kg of dry matter/cow per day from d 14 onwards. The 3-wk submission rate (percentage of cows inseminated at least once from d 0 to 20) and the 3- and 6-wk pregnancy rates of LPA cows (88, 45, and 71%, respectively) were lower than those of HPA cows (94, 53, and 78%, respectively), but conception rates to first (50%) or second (47%) service and final pregnancy rates (93%) did not differ between treatments. These results quantify the immediate and subsequent responses in reproductive performance and milk production to a severe restriction in DMI at the onset of a seasonal breeding period in pasture-grazed dairy cows.  相似文献

The timing of feed intake entrains circadian rhythms regulated by internal clocks in many mammals. The objective of this study was to determine if the timing of feeding entrains daily rhythms in dairy cows. Nine Holstein cows were used in a replicated 3 × 3 Latin square design with 14-d periods. An automated system recorded the timing of feed intake over the last 7 d of each period. Treatments were feeding 1×/d at 0830 h (AM) or 2030 h (PM) and feeding 2×/d in equal amounts at 0830 and 2030 h. All treatments were fed at 110% of daily intake. Cows were milked 2×/d at 0500 and 1700 h. Milk yield and composition were not changed by treatment. Daily intake did not differ, but twice-daily feeding tended to decrease total-tract digestibility of organic matter and neutral detergent fiber (NDF). A treatment by time of day interaction was observed for feeding behavior. The amount of feed consumed in the first 2 h after feeding was 70% greater for PM compared with AM feeding. A low rate of intake overnight (2400 to 0500 h; 2.2 ± 0.74% daily intake/h, mean ± SD) and a moderate rate of intake in the afternoon (1200 to 1700 h; 4.8 ± 1.1% daily intake/h) was noted for all treatments, although PM slightly reduced the rate during the afternoon period compared with AM. A treatment by time of day interaction was seen for fecal NDF and indigestible NDF (iNDF) concentration, blood urea nitrogen, plasma glucose and insulin concentrations, body temperature, and lying behavior. Specifically, insulin increased and glucose decreased more after evening feeding than after morning feeding. A cosine function within a 24-h period was used to characterize daily rhythms using a random regression. Rate of feed intake during spontaneous feeding, fecal NDF and iNDF concentration, plasma glucose, insulin, NEFA, body temperature, and lying behavior fit a cosine function within a 24-h period that was modified by treatment. In conclusion, feeding time can reset the daily rhythms of feeding and lying behavior, core body temperature, fecal NDF and iNDF concentration, and plasma blood urea nitrogen, glucose, and insulin concentration of dairy cows, but has no effect on daily DMI and milk production.  相似文献

Lactating cows were exposed to moderate and hot, humid weather to determine the effect of increasing ambient temperature, relative humidity, or temperature-humidity index (THI) on intake, milk yield, and milk temperature. Minimum and maximum temperatures averaged 17.9 and 29.5 degrees C (cool period) and 22.5 and 34.4 degrees C (hot period), and minimum and maximum THI averaged 63.8 and 76.6 (cool period) and 72.1 and 83.6 (hot period). Environmental conditions had minor effects on intake and milk yield during the cool period. During the hot period, the THI 2 d earlier and mean air temperature 2 d earlier had the greatest impact on milk yield and DMI, respectively. Both breeds maintained milk temperature within normal ranges during the cool period, but Holstein and Jersey p.m. milk temperatures averaged 39.6 and 39.2 degrees C during the hot period. Current day mean air temperature during the hot period had the greatest impact on cow p.m. milk temperature, and minimum air temperature had the greatest influence on a.m. milk temperature. Dry matter intake and milk yield declined linearly with respective increases in air temperature or THI during the hot period and milk temperature increased linearly with increasing air temperature. Dry matter intake and milk yield both exhibited a curvilinear relationship with milk temperature. Environmental modifications should target the effects of high temperatures on cow body temperature and should modify the environment at critical times during the day when cows are stressed, including morning hours when ambient temperatures are typically cooler and cows are not assumed to be stressed.  相似文献

Feed intake and feeding behavior of dairy cows fed diets that varied in fat supplementation and forage:concentrate (F:C) ratio were investigated. Eight multiparous Holstein dairy cows were used in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square experiment with 21-d periods. Treatments were 1) no supplemental fat and 34:66 F:C ratio; 2) 2% hydrogenated palm oil and 34:66 F:C ratio; 3) 2% yellow grease and 34:66 F:C ratio; and 4) 2% yellow grease and 45:55 F:C ratio. Cows were fed ad libitum twice daily as total mixed ration with free access to water. Dry matter intake (DMI) was not affected by fat supplementation regardless of fat source, whereas increased F:C ratio (from 34:66 to 45:55) lowered DMI by 7.5%. Meal interval, eating rate, and meal size were lower for cows fed yellow grease, and eating rate was less for cows fed the 45:55 F:C ratio diet. Chewing activity was not affected by fat supplementation, but was greater for cows fed the 45:55 F:C ratio diet. Results suggest that supplementation of 2% hydrogenated palm oil or 2% yellow grease had little effect on DMI and chewing behavior of Holstein dairy cows fed a 34:66 F:C ratio diet. The 2 fat sources can replace each other, depending on the availability or cost. Results also showed that DMI and chewing activity can be effectively manipulated by changing the F:C ratio of diet.  相似文献

The present study explored the effectiveness of Fourier transform mid-infrared (FT-IR) spectral profiles as a predictor for dry matter intake (DMI) and residual feed intake (RFI). The partial least squares regression method was used to develop the prediction models. The models were validated using different external test sets, one randomly leaving out 20% of the records (validation A), the second randomly leaving out 20% of cows (validation B), and a third (for DMI prediction models) randomly leaving out one cow (validation C). The data included 1,044 records from 140 cows; 97 were Danish Holstein and 43 Danish Jersey. Results showed better accuracies for validation A compared with other validation methods. Milk yield (MY) contributed largely to DMI prediction; MY explained 59% of the variation and the validated model error root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) was 2.24 kg. The model was improved by adding live weight (LW) as an additional predictor trait, where the accuracy R2 increased from 0.59 to 0.72 and error RMSEP decreased from 2.24 to 1.83 kg. When only the milk FT-IR spectral profile was used in DMI prediction, a lower prediction ability was obtained, with R2 = 0.30 and RMSEP = 2.91 kg. However, once the spectral information was added, along with MY and LW as predictors, model accuracy improved and R2 increased to 0.81 and RMSEP decreased to 1.49 kg. Prediction accuracies of RFI changed throughout lactation. The RFI prediction model for the early-lactation stage was better compared with across lactation or mid- and late-lactation stages, with R2 = 0.46 and RMSEP = 1.70. The most important spectral wavenumbers that contributed to DMI and RFI prediction models included fat, protein, and lactose peaks. Comparable prediction results were obtained when using infrared-predicted fat, protein, and lactose instead of full spectra, indicating that FT-IR spectral data do not add significant new information to improve DMI and RFI prediction models. Therefore, in practice, if full FT-IR spectral data are not stored, it is possible to achieve similar DMI or RFI prediction results based on standard milk control data. For DMI, the milk fat region was responsible for the major variation in milk spectra; for RFI, the major variation in milk spectra was within the milk protein region.  相似文献

Effects of prepartum administration of a monensin controlled release capsule (CRC) on rumen pH, dry matter intake, and milk production during the transition period and early lactation were determined in 16 multiparous Holstein cows. Cows were divided into blocks of 2 depending on calving date. Cows were fed either a close-up dry cow or a lactating cow total mixed ration ad libitum. Rumen pH was monitored continuously using indwelling probes. Monensin did not affect average daily rumen pH, time below pH 6, time below pH 5.6, area below pH 6, and area below pH 5.6 throughout the experiment. Average daily pH, time below pH 6, and time below pH 5.6 before calving were 6.62, 65.6 min/d, and 17.6 min/d, respectively, and did not differ among the weeks before calving. Average daily pH, time below pH 6, and time below pH 5.6 were 6.19, 443.3 min/d, and 115.5 min/d, respectively, during the first week after calving, and were 6.36, 204.3 min/d, and 52.4 min/d, respectively, during the sixth week after calving. In the weeks after calving, average daily pH showed a quadratic increase, time below pH 6 showed a quadratic decrease, and time below pH 5.6 showed a linear decrease. Monensin did not affect dry matter intake and daily yields of milk, milk fat, and milk protein. Results suggest that prepartum administration of a monensin CRC did not increase rumen pH in multiparous cows fed the experimental diets during the transition period and early lactation.  相似文献

Feed intake is one of the most important components of feed efficiency in dairy systems. However, it is a difficult trait to measure in commercial operations for individual cows. Milk spectrum from mid-infrared spectroscopy has been previously used to predict milk traits, and could be an alternative to predict dry matter intake (DMI). The objectives of this study were (1) to evaluate if milk spectra can improve DMI predictions based only on cow variables; (2) to compare artificial neural network (ANN) and partial least squares (PLS) predictions; and (3) to evaluate if wavelength (WL) selection through Bayesian network (BN) improves prediction quality. Milk samples (n = 1,279) from 308 mid-lactation dairy cows [127 ± 27 d in milk (DIM)] were collected between 2014 and 2016. For each milk spectra time point, DMI (kg/d), body weight (BW, kg), milk yield (MY, kg/d), fat (%), protein (%), lactose (%), and actual DIM were recorded. The DMI was predicted with ANN and PLS using different combinations of explanatory variables. Such combinations, called covariate sets, were as follows: set 1 (MY, BW0.75, DIM, and 361 WL); set 2 [MY, BW0.75, DIM, and 33 WL (WL selected by BN)]; set 3 (MY, BW0.75, DIM, and fat, protein, and lactose concentrations); set 4 (MY, BW0.75, DIM, 33 WL, fat, protein, and lactose); set 5 (MY, BW0.75, DIM, 33 WL, and visit duration in the feed bunk); set 6 (MY, DIM, and 33 WL); set 7 (MY, BW0.75, and DIM); set-WL (included 361 WL); and set-BN (included just 33 selected WL). All models (i.e., each combination of covariate set and fitting approach, ANN or PLS) were validated with an external data set. The use of ANN improved the performance of models 2, 5, 6, and BN. The use of BN combined with ANN yielded the highest accuracy and precision. The addition of individual WL compared with milk components (set 2 vs. set 3) did not improve prediction quality when using PLS. However, when ANN was employed, the model prediction with the inclusion of 33 WL was improved over the model containing only milk components (set 2 vs. set 3; concordance correlation coefficient = 0.80 vs. 0.72; coefficient of determination = 0.67 vs. 0.53; root mean square error of prediction 2.36 vs. 2.81 kg/d). The use of ANN and the inclusion of a behavior parameter, set 5, resulted in the best predictions compared with all other models (coefficient of determination = 0.70, concordance correlation coefficient = 0.83, root mean square error of prediction = 2.15 kg/d). The addition of milk spectra information to models containing cow variables improved the accuracy and precision of DMI predictions in lactating dairy cows when ANN was used. The use of BN to select more informative WL improved the model prediction when combined with cow variables, with further improvement when combined with ANN.  相似文献

The objective of the current study was to evaluate feed intake prediction models of varying complexity using individual observations of lactating cows subjected to experimental dietary treatments in periodic sequences (i.e., change-over trials). Observed or previous period animal data were combined with the current period feed data in the evaluations of the different feed intake prediction models. This would illustrate the situation and amount of available data when formulating rations for dairy cows in practice and test the robustness of the models when milk yield is used in feed intake predictions. The models to be evaluated in the current study were chosen based on the input data required in the models and the applicability to Nordic conditions. A data set comprising 2,161 total individual observations was constructed from 24 trials conducted at research barns in Denmark, Finland, Norway, and Sweden. Prediction models were evaluated by residual analysis using mixed and simple model regression. Great variation in animal and feed factors was observed in the data set, with ranges in total dry matter intake (DMI) from 10.4 to 30.8 kg/d, forage DMI from 4.1 to 23.0 kg/d, and milk yield from 8.4 to 51.1 kg/d. The mean biases of DMI predictions for the National Research Council, the Cornell Net Carbohydrate and Protein System, the British, Finnish, and Scandinavian models were −1.71, 0.67, 2.80, 0.83, −0.60 kg/d with prediction errors of 2.33, 1.71, 3.19, 1.62, and 2.03 kg/d, respectively, when observed milk yield was used in the predictions. The performance of the models were ranked the same, using either mixed or simple model regression analysis, but generally the random contribution to the prediction error increased with simple rather than mixed model regression analysis. The prediction error of all models was generally greater when using previous period data compared with the observed milk yield. When the average milk yield over all periods was used in the predictions of feed intake, the increase in prediction error of all models was generally less than when compared with previous period animal data combined with current feed data. Milk yield as a model input in intake predictions can be substantially affected by current dietary factors. Milk yield can be used as model input when formulating rations aiming to sustain a given milk yield, but can generate large errors in estimates of future feed intake and milk production if the economically optimal diet deviates from the current diet.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of daily herbage allowance (DHA) and concentrate level on milk production and dry matter intake of spring-calving dairy cows in early lactation. Seventy-two Holstein-Friesian dairy cows (mean calving date February 2) were randomly assigned across 6 treatments (n = 12) in a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement. The 6 treatments consisted of 2 DHA ( > 4 cm) and 3 concentrate levels: 13 kg of herbage dry matter/cow per d (low) or 17 kg of herbage dry matter/cow per d (high) DHA and unsupplemented, 3 kg, or 6 kg of dry matter concentrate/cow per d. The experimental period (period I) lasted 77 d and was followed by a carryover period (period II) during which animals were randomly reassigned across 2 grazing treatments offering 17 or 21 kg of herbage dry matter/cow per d. Increasing DHA significantly increased milk (+1.85 kg), solids-corrected milk, protein (+79.5 g), and lactose yields, protein concentration, and mean body weight (BW). Mean body condition score (BCS) and end-point BCS were also significantly higher with the high-DHA treatments. There was a linear response in milk yield, milk lactose concentration, and solids-corrected milk to concentrate supplementation. There was a significant difference in mean BW as concentrate increased from 0 to 3 kg (506 and 524 kg, respectively); there was no further increase in BW when 6 kg of concentrate was offered. Cows offered the low DHA had significantly lower grass dry matter intake (13.3 kg) and total dry matter intake (16.3 kg) than the high-DHA cows during period I. Concentrate supplementation significantly increased total dry matter intake. During period II, previous DHA continued to have a significant carryover effect on milk protein concentration, BW change, mean BCS, and end-point BCS. Concentrate supplementation during period I continued to have a significant carryover effect in period II on milk yield; milk fat, protein, and lactose yields; solids-corrected milk yield; BW; and mean BCS. Results from this study indicate that offering a medium level of DHA (17 kg of herbage dry matter) in early lactation will increase milk production. Offering concentrate will result in a linear increase in milk production. In an early spring feed-budgeting scenario, when grass supply is in deficit, offering 3 kg of dry matter concentrate with 17 kg of DHA has the additive effect of maintaining the grazing rotation at the target length as well as ensuring the herd is adequately fed.  相似文献

Saturated and unsaturated fatty acid supplements (FS) were evaluated for effects on feed intake, meal patterns, and chewing behavior. Eight ruminally and duodenally cannulated cows were used in a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square design experiment with 21-d periods. Treatments were control and a linear substitution of 2.5% fatty acids from supplemented saturated FS (SAT; prilled, hydrogenated free fatty acids) for partially unsaturated FS (UNS; calcium soaps of long-chain fatty acids). All rations contained identical forage and concentrate components including 37.2% forage and 13.5% cottonseed. Dry matter intake for SAT was not different from control, whereas increasing unsaturated FS linearly decreased dry matter intake by 3.2 kg. Wet weight of ruminal digesta decreased linearly up to 11.3 kg (13%) with increasing unsaturated FS. Adding supplementary fatty acids did not change meal number, meal length, or time between meals compared with control, but increasing unsaturated FS decreased meal size 0.22 kg (9%) within FS. The SAT treatment increased time spent ruminating by 56 (10%) and 42 (7%) min/d compared with control and UNS, respectively. Increasing saturated FS did not affect frequency of rumination bouts or interval between bouts, but increased rumination bout length by 5.6 min. Water intake was not affected by treatment, but increasing saturated FS linearly decreased the number of drinking bouts per day by up to 2.9 bouts (23%). Increased unsaturated fatty acid flow to the duodenum decreased feed intake by decreasing meal size, and increased saturated fatty acid flow to the duodenum increased rumination time per day by increasing rumination bout length.  相似文献

A total of 90 lactating Holstein cows averaging 628 kg (SE = 8) of body weight (BW) were allotted at calving to 30 groups of three cows blocked for similar calving dates to determine the effects of feeding whole untreated flaxseed on milk production and composition, fatty acid composition of blood and milk, and digestibility, and to determine whether flaxseed could substitute for other sources of fat such as Megalac and micronized soybeans. Cows were fed a total mixed diet based on grass and corn silage and fat supplements for ad libitum intake. The experiment was carried out from calving up to wk 16 of lactation. Cows within each block were assigned to one of the three isonitrogenous, isoenergetic, and isolipidic supplements based on either whole flaxseed (FLA), Megalac (MEG), or micronized soybeans (SOY). Intake of dry matter and change in BW were similar among diets. Cows fed FLA had greater milk yield than those fed MEG (35.7 vs. 33.5 kg/d) and there was no difference between cows fed FLA and those fed SOY (34.4 kg/d). Fat percentage was higher in the milk of cows fed MEG (4.14%) than in the milk of those fed FLA (3.81%) or SOY (3.70%), but milk protein percentage was higher for cows fed FLA (2.98%) than for those fed MEG (2.86%) and SOY (2.87%). Digestibilities of acid detergent fiber, neutral detergent fiber, and ether extract were lower for cows fed FLA than for those fed SOY and MEG. Retention of N was similar among diets. Feeding FLA resulted in the lowest omega-6-to-omega-3-fatty-acids ratio, which would improve the nutritive value of milk from a human health point of view. The data suggest that micronized soybeans and Megalac can be completely substituted by whole untreated flaxseed as the fat source in the diet of early lactating cows without any adverse effect on production and that flaxseed increased milk protein percentage and its omega-6-to-omega-3-fatty-acids ratio.  相似文献

A total of 48 high genetic merit (HM) and 48 medium merit (MM) cows, each given a low (LC), medium (MC), or high (HC) level of concentrate supplementation, were used in a split-plot design experiment, which was run in three consecutive years, to evaluate animal production responses. Individual cow intakes were estimated twice each year while at pasture; measurement period 1 (MP1) was in May/June, and measurement period 2 (MP2) was in early September, corresponding on average to d 110 and 200 of lactation, respectively. In MP1, cows were offered 0 (LC), 3 (MC), and 6 kg (HC), whereas in MP2 the levels were 0 (LC), 0 (MC), and 4 kg (HC) of concentrate daily. Genotype had a significant effect on all milk production parameters in MP1 and MP2. The HM cows had the highest yield of milk, fat, protein, and lactose, whereas the MM cows had the highest milk fat, protein, and lactose concentrations. The HM cows had significantly higher grass dry matter intake (GDMI) estimates. In MP1, the average responses, per kg concentrate dry matter, was +1.10 kg of milk, +0.038 kg of protein, +0.032 kg of fat. The corresponding values in MP2 were +0.94 kg of milk, +0.037 kg of protein, and +0.025 kg of fat. The response to concentrate was linear and independent of preexperimental milk yield. In MP1, the partial regression coefficients relating daily GDMI to an increase in 1 kg of preexperimental milk yield (PMY), preexperimental BW (PBW), and concentrate intake (CI) were 0.123, 0.006, and -0.54, respectively, whereas the corresponding values in MP2 were 0.190,0.007, and-0.444, respectively. This study indicates that with high yielding dairy cows, on gras only GDMI of 17 kg of supporting milk yield of 30-kg/d is achievable. In this scenario, concentrate supplementation will result in lower substitution rates, and higher milk yield response than previously published with lower yielding cows.  相似文献
