Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) are of interest due to their potential use as inexpensive and environmentally friendly photovoltaic (PV) devices with acceptable power conversion efficiency (PCE). Platinum (Pt) metal is, traditionally, the preferred material for the counter electrode (CE) component of DSSCs, however, further development of iodide/triiodide (I/I3) based liquid-electrolyte DSSCs using Pt remains challenging due to the high cost of this scarce metal and its susceptibility to corrosion. Additional concerns include solvent leakage and low chemical stability resulting from volatile liquid electrolyte used in DSSCs. In order to counteract this issue, polymer electrolytes or hole-transporters with higher mobilities are employed as a replacement for liquid electrolytes. In this regard, polymers can serve as efficient CE materials by replacing the platinized electrode in liquid-electrolyte DSSCs, while also substituting for the liquid electrolytes as polymer electrolytes or hole-transporters in solid-state or quasi solid-state DSSCs. Considering the fragility and shape restrictions of glass substrates, polymer substrates may also be used to replace rigid glass substrates, providing more flexible DSSCs. Herein, applications of the polymers as cell components (CEs, polymer electrolytes or hole-transporter, and plastic substrates) in DSSCs are discussed, with special focus on the role that polymers play in DSSCs and widely accepted reports of PV performance. The current understanding of the factors and strategies involved in improving the performance of polymers in DSSCs are reviewed and analyzed. In addition, the benefits, challenges and potential utility of polymers for use in DSSCs are assessed.  相似文献

Poly(vinylidenefluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) nanofibers were prepared by the electrospinning method and used as polymer electrolytes in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The electrolyte uptake and ionic conductivity of electrospun PVDF-HFP nanofibers with different diameters changed significantly, regardless of the nanofiber thickness. The PVDF-HFP nanofibers prepared from a 15 wt% spinning solution showed high ionic conductivity (1.295 S/cm) and electrolyte uptake (947 %). DSSCs based on the 15 wt% PVDF-HFP nanofiber electrolyte showed an electron transit time of 6.34 × 10?3 s, electronic recombination time of 5.88 × 10?2 s, and conversion efficiency of 3.13 %. Thus, we concluded that the electrospun PVDF-HFP nanofibers can be used as polymer electrolytes in flexible DSSCs as well.  相似文献

In situ thermal polymerization of a model ionic liquid monomer and ionic liquids mixture to form gel electrolytes is developed for quasi‐solid‐state dye‐sensitized solar cells (Q‐DSSCs). The chemical structures and thermal property of the monomers and polymer are investigated in detail. The effect of iodine concentration on the conductivity and triiodide diffusion of the gel electrolytes is also investigated in detail. The conductivity and triiodide diffusion of the gel electrolytes increase with the increasing I2 concentration, while excessive I2 contents will decrease the electrical performances. Based on the in situ thermal polymeric gel electrolytes for Q‐DSSCs, highest power conversion efficiency of 5.01% has been obtained. The superior long‐term stability of fabricated DSSCs indicates that the cells based on in situ thermal polymeric gel electrolytes can overcome the drawbacks of the volatile liquid electrolyte. These results offer us a feasible method to explore new gel electrolytes for high‐performance Q‐DSSCs. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Sci. 2015 , 132, 42802.  相似文献

Polyethylene glycol (PEG) and trimethylolpropane triacrylate (TMPTA) were used as photo-crosslinkable polymer electrolytes for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). PEG and trifunctional TMPTA formed a crosslinked structure upon light illumination, as confirmed by the solubility test and FTIR spectroscopy. In order to make close contact with the TiO2 porous film, the polymeric electrolyte was prepared by photo-polymerization after injecting the monomer electrolyte solution into the porous film. The cross-sectional FE-SEM images showed the penetration of the electrolyte into the porous TiO2 layer. Under AM 1.5 (100 mW/cm2) light irradiation for up to 30 min, a maximum 21% increase in the photo-conversion efficiency (η%) was observed. The electrolyte containing PEG and 20 wt% TMPTA showed a maximum increase in the photo-conversion efficiency from 2.75% to 3.35% with 30 min of light illumination. Also, the DSSCs with the novel crosslinkable PEG/TMPTA based polymer electrolyte showed improved long-term stability in comparison to those with electrolytes containing only PEG.  相似文献

Solvents and electrolytes play an important role in the fabrication of dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). We have studied the poly(ethylene oxide)‐poly(methyl methacrylate)‐KI‐I2 (PEO‐PMMA‐KI‐I2) polymer blend electrolytes prepared with different wt % of the 2‐mercaptopyridine by solution casting method. The polymer electrolyte films were characterized by the FTIR, X‐ray diffraction, electrochemical impedance and dielectric studies. FTIR spectra revealed complex formation between the PEO‐PMMA‐KI‐I2 and 2‐mercaptopyrindine. Ionic conductivity data revealed that 30% 2‐mercaptopyridine‐doped PEO‐PMMA‐KI‐I2 electrolyte can show higher conductivity (1.55 × 10?5 S cm?1) than the other compositions (20, 40, and 50%). The effect of solvent on the conductivity and dielectric of solid polymer electrolytes was studied for the best composition (30% 2‐mercaptopyridine‐doped PEO‐PMMA‐KI‐I2) electrolyte using various organic solvents such as acetonitrile, N,N‐dimethylformamide, 2‐butanone, chlorobenzene, dimethylsulfoxide, and isopropanol. We found that ac‐conductivity and dielectric constant are higher for the polymer electrolytes processed from N,N‐dimethylformamide. This observation revealed that the conductivity of the solid polymer electrolytes is dependent on the solvent used for processing and the dielectric constant of the film. The photo‐conversion efficiency of dye‐sensitized solar cells fabricated using the optimized polymer electrolytes was 3.0% under an illumination of 100 mW cm?2. The study suggests that N,N‐dimethylformamide is a good solvent for the polymer electrolyte processing due to higher ac‐conductivity beneficial for the electrochemical device applications. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. For high solar conversion efficiency of dye-sensitized solar cells [DSSCs], TiO2 nanofiber [TN] and Ag-doped TiO2 nanofiber [ATN] have been extended to be included in TiO2 films to increase the amount of dye loading for a higher short-circuit current. The ATN was used on affected DSSCs to increase the open circuit voltage. This process had enhanced the exit in dye molecules which were rapidly split into electrons, and the DSSCs with ATN stop the recombination of the electronic process. The conversion efficiency of TiO2 photoelectrode-based DSSCs was 4.74%; it was increased to 6.13% after adding 5 wt.% ATN into TiO2 films. The electron lifetime of DSSCs with ATN increased from 0.29 to 0.34 s and that electron recombination was reduced.  相似文献

1-Oligo(ethylene oxide)-3-methylimidazolium iodide (PEOMImI) was synthesized and applied to dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) by blending it with different 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium iodides used as ionic liquid electrolytes. The 1-propyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide (PMII) blend enabled the DSSC to attain a higher solar energy conversion efficiency of 4.52% under a light intensity of 100 mW cm−2. The addition of N-methylimidazole (NMBI) to the electrolytes increased the conversion efficiency as compared to DSSCs based on NMBI-free electrolytes. The addition of both 1-allyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide (AMII) and NMBI enabled DSSCs to reach their highest solar energy conversion efficiency of 6.14% under a light intensity of 100 mW cm−2. The ionic conductivity and diffusion coefficient of the triiodide were found to be augmented dramatically after adding NMBI, which leads to an increase in the photocurrent density. The enhancement mechanism of NMBI in the electrolyte was investigated by Raman spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry, and it was mainly due to the enhancement of electron exchange in electrolytes.  相似文献

The most efficient DSSCs reported till date contains liquid electrolytes with I?/I3? redox couple. However, the disadvantages of liquid electrolytes lead to reduce the impact of DSSCs. In the present work, the I?/I3? liquid electrolyte was replaced by quasi-solid gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) using polyethylene glycol (Mwt = 20,000), which are incorporated in small fractions (0, 1, 5, 10, 15 and 20 % w/v) into the liquid iodine/iodide electrolyte matrix. The roughness and homogeneity of the GPEs on the surface of the TiO2 electrodes was monitored by atomic force microscope which indicates the physical cross linking of polymer chains in a gel network. The conductivity (σ) and the thermal stability (TGA) of the GPEs compared with the liquid electrolyte were studied in details. The photovoltaic characteristics [Voc, Isc, fill factor and efficiency (η)] of the DSSCs based GPEs were recorded, The results revealed the DSSCs assembled with the gel polymer electrolyte reports a higher short circuit density (JSC) and lower or similar open circuit voltage (VOC) than the cells with liquid electrolyte. The overall light-to-electrical-energy conversion efficiencies (η) of the cells based GPEs showed a relatively higher stability over a period of time compared with those based liquid electrolyte, indicating that the quasi-solid nature of the GPEs may impart flexibility to DSSCs so that some large-scale productions such as roll-to-roll process can be realized.  相似文献

A novel ternary-encapsulated spherical TiO2 aggregate (TES-TiO2) with submicron particle sizes was formed by blending commercial P25 TiO2 and two different sizes of TiO2 particles (synthesized by modified sol-gel and hydrothermal methods). A double-layered TiO2 electrode for dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) was fabricated by depositing TES-TiO2 particles onto nanocrystalline mesoporous TiO2 (Meso-TiO2)-coated FTO glass by a cathodic electrophoresis technique and then calcined at 450 °C for 30 min. Compared to double-layered Meso-TiO2/P25 electrodes, the energy conversion efficiency (η) of DSSCs from the obtained Meso-TiO2/TES-TiO2 electrode was improved by 9.3%, from 5.94% to 6.49%. When the prepared double-layered Meso-TiO2/TES-TiO2 electrode was calcined at high temperature, a high-voltage electric field (HVEF) was introduced to assist crystallization. As a result, η was further enhanced by 8.6%, from 6.49% to 7.05%. Notably, compared to typical 20 nm TiO2 nanocrystallites applied in the active layer of DSSCs, the prepared loosely porous TES-TiO2 with submicron size increased the light-scattering effect and promoted dye molecule adsorption and the diffusion of electrolytes. In addition, introduction of the HVEF provided better connection among TiO2 particles, which facilitated electron transport and avoided charge recombination.  相似文献

We prepared highly ordered titanium dioxide nanotube arrays (TNAs) by anodizing Ti foils in F containing electrolyte. The thickness and dye loading amount of TNAs were 26 μm and 1.06 × 10−7 mol cm−2, respectively. TiO2 nanoparticles (TNPs) were electrophoretically deposited on the inner wall of nanotube to produce coated nanotube arrays (TNAP). The dye loading was increased to 1.56 × 10−7 mol cm−2, and the electron transport rate improved. TNAs and TNAP were sensitized with ruthenium dye N3 to yield dye-sensitized TiO2 nanotube solar cells. The power conversion efficiency of TNA-based dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) was 4.28%, whereas the efficiency of TNAP-based DSSCs increased to 6.28% when illuminated from the counter electrode. The increase of power conversion efficiency of TNAP-based DSSCs is ascribed to the increased surface area of TNAs and the faster electron transport rate.  相似文献

A new series of electrolytes composed of LiI and acetamide have been investigated in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). These electrolytes melt at about 50 °C and their ionic conductivities vary drastically below and above the melting points (Tm). They tend to form large crystals at low temperature, leading to poor penetration and contact within porous TiO2 anode film. This shortage is improved by introducing nano-SiO2 particles into the electrolyte. A total conversion efficiencies (η) of 0.3% at 35 °C and 4.2% at 75 °C are achieved respectively under AM 1.5 simulated solar light illumination when a LiI/acetamide (1:16) electrolyte with 8 wt% nano-SiO2 is used. It is expected that the DSSC using phase transition electrolyte could show high efficiency for operation at high temperature and high stability for storage at low temperature.  相似文献

TiO2 nanoparticles (NPs) with a size of 240 nm (T240), used as a light-scattering layer, were applied on 25-nm-sized TiO2 NPs (T25) that were used as a dye-absorbing layer in the photoelectrodes of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). In addition, the incident light was concentrated via a condenser lens, and the effect of light concentration on the capacity of the light-scattering layer was systematically investigated. At the optimized focal length of the condenser lens, T25/T240 double layer (DL)-based DSSCs with the photoactive area of 0.36 cm2 were found to have the short circuit current (Isc) of 11.92 mA, the open circuit voltage (Voc) of 0.74 V, and power conversion efficiency (PCE) of approximately 4.11%, which is significantly improved when they were compared to the T25 single layer (SL)-based DSSCs without using a solar concentrator (the corresponding values were the Isc of 2.53 mA, the Voc of 0.69, and the PCE of 3.57%). Thus, the use of the optimized light harvesting structure in the photoelectrodes of DSSCs in conjunction with light concentration was found to significantly enhance the power output of DSSCs.  相似文献

The effect of using a binary iodide salt mixture in N719 dye-sensitized TiO2 solar cells (DSSCs) is investigated. The cells use tetrapropylammonium iodide (Pr4NI) and magnesium iodide (MgI2) in a plasticized polyacrylonitrile gel in glass/FTO/nano-porous TiO2/gel, I2/Pt/FTO/glass solar cell structure. The salt composition in the gel electrolyte is varied to optimize the efficiency of DSSCs. The DSSCs with MgI2 or Pr4NI as the only iodide salt showed the efficiencies 2.56 and 4.16 %, respectively, under AM 1.5 (100 mW cm?2) illumination while the DSSC with mixed cations with 18.4:81.6 MgI2:Pr4NI molar ratio shows the highest efficiency of 5.18 %. Thus the efficiency enhancement, relative to the high efficiency end member is about 25 %. DC polarization measurements establish the predominantly ionic behavior of the electrolytes, and show that the variation of efficiency with salt composition correlates with the change in short circuit photocurrent density (J sc), which appears to be governed by the iodide ion conductivity. It is also found that J sc correlates with the iodide ion transference number estimated from DC polarization data taken with non-blocking iodine electrodes. This study suggests that binary iodide mixtures may be used to obtain efficiency enhancement in different types of DSSCs based on polymeric, gel, or solvent electrolytes.  相似文献

Solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) have been constructed employing supramolecular electrolytes with multiple hydrogen bonding. A supramolecule was facilely synthesized by one-pot reaction between the amines of methyl isocytosine (MIC) and the epoxy groups of poly(ethylene glycol diglycidyl ether) (PEGDGE) to produce quadruple hydrogen bonding units. Hydrogen bonding interactions and dissolution behavior of salt in supramolecular electrolytes are investigated. The ionic conductivity of the supramolecular electrolytes with ionic liquid, i.e. 1-methyl-3-propylimidazolium iodide (MPII) reaches 8.5 × 10−5 S/cm at room temperature, which is higher than that with metal salt (KI). A worm-like morphology is observed in the FE-SEM micrographs of TiO2 nanoporous layer, due to the connection of TiO2 nanoparticles resulting from adequate coating by electrolytes. DSSCs employing the supramolecular electrolytes with MPII and KI exhibit an energy conversion efficiency of 2.5% and 0.5%, respectively, at 100 mW/cm2, indicating the importance of the cation of salt. Solar cell performances were further improved up to 3.7% upon tuning interaction strength in the electrolytes.  相似文献

Three triarylamine organic dyes (XS28-30) containing a cyclopentadithiophene unit as the conjugated bridge have been designed and synthesized for a potential application in dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). Their absorption spectra, electrochemical and photovoltaic properties have been investigated. The incorporation of ethyl-substituted cyclopentadithiophene is highly beneficial to light-harvesting and preventing close π-π aggregation, thus favorably generating high efficiency. For a typical device, a solar energy conversion efficiency (η) of 5.8% based on XS29 was achieved under simulated AM 1.5 solar irradiation (100 mW cm−2) with a short-circuit photocurrent density (JSC) of 14.4 mA cm−2, an open-circuit voltage (VOC) of 601 mV, and a fill factor (ff) of 0.68. These results suggest that the functionalized cyclopentadithiophene unit is a promising candidate for DSSCs.  相似文献

While many attempts have been made in the recent past to improve the power conversion efficiencies of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs), only a few reports can be found on the study of these cells using binary iodides in the gel polymer electrolyte. This paper reports the effect of using a binary mixture of (large and small cation) alkaline salts, in particular CsI and LiI, on the efficiency enhancement in DSSCs with gel polymer electrolytes. The electrolyte with the binary mixture of CsI:LiI = 1:1 (by weight) shows the highest ionic conductivity 2.9 × 10?3 S cm?1 at 25 °C. DC polarization measurements showed predominantly ionic behavior of the electrolyte. The density of charge carriers and mobility of mobile ions were calculated using a newly developed method. The temperature dependent behavior of the conductivity can be understood as due to an increase of both the density and mobility of charge carriers. The solar cell with only CsI as the iodide salt gave an energy conversion efficiency of ~3.9 % while it was ~3.6 % for the cell with only LiI. However, the electrolyte containing LiI:CsI with mass ratio 1:1 showed the highest solar cell performance with an energy conversion efficiency of ~4.8 % under the irradiation of one Sun highlighting the influence of the mixed cation on the performance of the cell. This is an efficiency enhancement of 23 %.  相似文献

A series of conjugated polymer electrolytes (CPEs) comprising fluorene/carbazole or thiophene/carbazole backbones with quaternized ammonium iodide groups were synthesized and used in polymer solution and polymer gel electrolytes in dye‐sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The photovoltaic (PV) performances became markedly poorer with increasing CPE content for the DSSCs based on polymer solution electrolytes. However, the PV performances were not significantly affected with increasing CPE content for the DSSCs fabricated from poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO)/CPE blend‐based gel‐type electrolytes. Moreover, higher PV efficiencies and stabilities were obtained for the DSSCs based on PEO/CPE blend gel electrolytes as compared to the DSSCs based on PEO gel electrolyte. The electrochemical impedance and PV properties of the DSSCs based on polymer solution electrolytes and on polymer gel electrolytes were determined as a function of the CPE concentration. The influence of solvents on the property of poly (acrylic acid)-oligo-(ethylene glycol) polymer gel electrolyte and photovoltaic performance of quasi-solid-state dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) were investigated. Solvents or mixed solvents with large donor number enhance the liquid electrolyte absorbency, which further influences the ionic conductivity of polymer gel electrolyte. A polymer gel electrolyte with ionic conductivity of 4.45 mS cm−1 was obtained by using poly (acrylic acid)-oligo-(ethylene glycol) as polymer matrix, and absorbing 30 vol.% N-methyl pyrrolidone and 70 vol.% γ-butyrolactone with 0.5 M NaI and 0.05 M I2. By using this polymer gel electrolyte coupling with 0.4 M pyridine additive, a quasi-solid-state dye-sensitized solar cell with conversion efficiency of 4.74% was obtained under irradiation of 100 mW cm−2 (AM 1.5).  相似文献

A new carbon nanotube (CNTs)–poly acrylonitrile (PAN) composite electrolyte was prepared by the thermal polymerization of acrylonitrile (AN) with CNTs for solid-state dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). It was found that the uniform CNT–PAN composite was formed due to the thermal polymerization of AN on CNTs. The strong bonding between CNTs and PAN could be confirmed by the characterization of XPS and Raman spectroscopy, resulting in the lowering of crystallinity and the increasing the ionic conductivity of composite electrolytes. On comparison with bare CNTs and the other composite electrolytes, the formation of triiodide (I3) ions in CNT–PAN composite electrolytes was drastically increased which was expected from the high ionic conductivity of electrolyte via I3/I redox couple. DSSCs fabricated with CNT–PAN composite electrolytes achieved relatively high conversion efficiency of 3.9% with an open circuit voltage (VOC) of 0.57 V, short circuit current density (JSC) of 10.9 mA/cm2 and fill factor of 63.6%, which attributed to supply the higher extent of I3 ions from CNT–PAN composite electrolyte during the charge transport process.  相似文献

A novel alkylimidazolium iodide containing an amide group, 1-(2-hexanamidoethyl)-3-methylimidazol-3-ium iodide (amido-ImI), was synthesized to act as the quasi-solid-state electrolyte of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). The DSSC with the amido-ImI electrolyte exhibited short-circuit photocurrent density (Jsc) and overall energy conversion efficiency (η) that were improved by 7.2% and 10.2%, respectively, compared to those obtained with the cell containing 1-hexyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium iodide, a commonly used liquid electrolyte, at 100 mW cm−2. Furthermore, the stability of the DSSC was enhanced by the presence of amido-ImI.  相似文献
