In this study, the performance of the stone column encased with conductive jute geotextile in improving the characteristics of soft clay under k0 stress condition was evaluated using a custom-designed large-scale consolidation test setup. The electrokinetic-encased stone column (e-ESC) was designed as a cathode, while mild steel rods were chosen as anodes, and by applying a voltage gradient of 0.1 V/mm between the electrodes, electrokinetic processes were initiated. The efficacy of using the e-ESC in improving the performance of soft clay was assessed by comparing the results with an ordinary stone column (OSC) and encased stone column (ESC) reinforced soft clay. The results from the study reveal that the inclusion of stiffer material like OSC and ESC in soft clay has significantly increased undrained shear strength and modulus of subgrade reaction of the composite ground with a reduction in settlement and compression index. Due to the application of the voltage gradient between the electrodes, the rate of consolidation settlement of composite ground has significantly increased when compared to the OSC/ESC case. Further, it was confirmed from the chemical and mineralogical analysis that the pH, chemical composition, mineral phases, and microfabric of soft clay were altered with the voltage gradient.  相似文献

Results from a series of laboratory model tests on unreinforced and geogrid-reinforced sand bed resting on stone column-improved soft clay have been presented. The diameter of stone column and footing has been taken as 50 mm and 100 mm, respectively for all the model tests carried out. Load was applied to the soil bed through the footing until the total settlement reached at least 20% of footing diameter. As compared to unimproved soft clay, the increase in load-carrying capacity under different improved ground conditions has been observed. Influences of the thickness of unreinforced as well as geogrid-reinforced sand bed and the size of geogrid reinforcement on the performance of stone column-improved soft clay bed have also been investigated. Significant improvement in load-carrying capacity of soft soil is observed due to the placement of sand bed over stone column-improved soft clay. The inclusion of geogrid layer within sand bed further increases the load-carrying capacity and decreases the settlement of the soil. Due to the placement of sand bed, the bulge diameter of stone column reduces while the depth of bulge increases. Further reduction in the bulge diameter and increase in bulge depth are observed due to application of geogrid layer. The optimum thickness of unreinforced sand bed is twice the optimum thickness of geogrid-reinforced sand bed. Under specific material properties and test conditions, it is further observed that the optimum diameter of geogrid layer is thrice the diameter of footing.  相似文献

This paper explores the potential use of a woven polypropylene textile for encapsulating stone columns and improving performance of a local soft soil in Warangal city of India. A series of axial load tests were performed on stone columns of various diameters and under various encapsulation conditions that include single and double layers and other combinations. Load carrying capacity of stone column increased twice its original capacity when encapsulated with different geofabric materials. Performance enhancement strongly correlated to the tensile strength of encasement material and encapsulation condition. In addition, the influence of lateral thrust on group of stone columns arranged in square and triangular patterns were investigated. Irrespective of the material used, lateral displacement reduced by half for encased stone columns. Apart from tensile strength of encasing material, the amount of material used for encasement in the form of additional encasement layer was found to be crucial. The cost of using the polypropylene encasing material is only a third of the commercial geotextiles; however, the performance is inferior to woven geotextiles but far superior to non-woven geotextiles.  相似文献
