The social and political construction of technological frames

It is widely accepted that the successful adoption of an information system depends to a great extent on users' perceptions of the information system. It follows then that an understanding of users' cognitive frames should be a key factor in managing the adoption of information systems. To reach such an understanding is not an easy task as cognitive frames are dynamic phenomena. For example, what an individual perceives as ‘ease of use’ and ‘usefulness’ may depend not only on intrinsic qualities of the information system but also on the changing contexts in which the information system is evaluated. This work argues that the management of information systems' adoption is a social and political process in which stakeholders frame and reframe their perceptions of an information system. A case study carried out in a European bank illustrates how the Bank's technical team influenced users' technological frames, including those of senior management in order to ensure a smooth implementation process. In conclusion, the paper introduces a set of theoretical propositions relating to the social and political processes that occur during information systems adoption.

Attribute Management System for Engineering Analysis

. This paper presents the design and implementation of an attribute management system that supports the specification of information, past that of the domain definition, needed to qualify an engineering analysis. The information anaged by this system includes various order tensors eeded to specify the analysis attributes of material properties, oads, and boundary conditions as well as additional data constructs used by the analysis such as strings, and references to either other attributes or model entities. The system supports general dependencies and variations of this attribute information as well as its association with the various geometric entities which constitute the geometric domain being analyzed. In addition, since the information is coupled with the model entities themselves, the system can be used to store information needed to control the discretization process of the geometric domain. Since the information can be both spatially and temporally varying, an expression subsystem was also designed into the system. The framework was designed using object-oriented techniques, implemented in C++, and can be easily maintained and extended.     

一种Intranet信息保护系统的设计和实现

鉴于当前单位信息安全和知识产权所面临的威胁和挑战、网络上恶意移动代码攻击事件日渐增多及破坏力度增大的事实,着重研究Intranet信息保护技术。提出了一种Intranet信息保护系统的体系结构,所实现的系统包括数据采集、数据预处理、策略管理、数据分析、数据表示五个部分。将潜在语义索引方法运用到该系统中,很好地实现了分析效率和准确度的平衡。系统可以检测和拦截不允许传送的信息内容,有效阻止恶意移动代码,为Intranet信息安全提供了一种行之有效的解决方案。     

The design of information systems: parti, formats and sketching

In this article it is argued that an information system must be treated as an artefact with a format . We need to see information systems design as based on architectonic and not tectonic thinking. Design based on architectonic thinking emphasizes (1) the task of giving form to a design proposal, and (2) the task of creating an overall structure for the information system. These two activities are closely related because they both deal with the issue of seeing the idea or whole of systems, and the problem of how to give form to that whole . The paper begins with an exploration of the concept formative faculties in relation to 'given' and 'non-given' objects. The concepts of parti and format are then presented as a way to grasp the 'whole' of an information system. How formats can be used in information systems design is discussed as well as how this leads to the act of sketching as an important but neglected activity in information systems design. Sketching is promoted by introducing diathenic graphologue as the art of 'giving form to the unknown'. The paper ends by suggesting how formats and diathenic graphologue can be practised and included as important aspects of information systems design education and training.

Some invariant and inverse invariant characters of information systems under homomorphisms based on data compression

ABSTRACT

Homomorphisms between information systems as a kind of tools to study communication between information systems are based on data compression, i.e. a complex massive information system is compressed into a relatively small-scale information system by means of homomorphisms under the premise that some of the same data structures are maintained. This paper is devoted to obtaining some invariant and inverse invariant characters of information systems under homomorphisms based on data compression. Saturation reductions of an information system is first proposed. Then, relationships between reductions and saturation reductions of the same information system are given. Next, information structures in information systems are further investigated. Finally, it is proved that coordinate sets, necessary attributes, necessary s-attributes, saturated coordinate sets, saturation reductions, some dependence and independence between information structures in an information system are both invariant and inverse invariant under homomorphisms based on data compression, in other words, some of the same data structures of an information system are obtained. Moreover, an example is used to illustrate that information granulation, rough entropy, information entropy and information amount are neither invariant nor inverse invariant under homomorphisms based on data compression.     

Information Systems that Really Support Decision-Making

Decision makers are expected to make decisions which have a positive effect on the future of their enterprises. We expect that intelligent information systems support their activities. Today, databases and web-based resources, accessed through effective communications, make information about the past rapidly available. To project the future the decision makers either have to use intuition or employ tool for prediction, and initialize such tools with information obtained from an information system to such tools. An effective information system should integrate forecasting the future, and because there choices have been made, such a system must also support the comparative assessment of the effects of alternate decisions. The complexity of an information system handling the past, and multiple futures will be great, and must be modularized with effective interfaces. We recommend the use of an SQL-like interface language to access existing tools to assess the future, as spreadsheets and simulations. Making results of simulations accessible as another contribution to integrated information systems has the potential of greatly augmenting their effectiveness and really support decision-making.

本文在研究了基于构件的信息系统体系结构基础上,提出了基于构件的信息系统的开发框架,其中可重用构件是其重要的一部分。该框架可以看作是一个基于构件的“标准”的原型系统,类似于一个构件化信息系统产生器,通过该框架可迅速生成一个构件化的信息系统。     

STEP-NC compliant process planning as an enabler for adaptive global manufacturing

Manufacturing firms are seeking more efficient methods of CNC manufacture. ISO14649 informally known as STEP-NC has been proposed as a high-level hierarchical manufacturing information model as a replacement for the low-level machining instructions of ISO6983 and RS274D. In this paper, the applicability of STEP-NC as an enabler for creating an adaptive global manufacturing system is examined. The overall framework of the system is presented followed by an outline of its information requirements. Suitability of STEP-NC to support each requirement is then studied with the necessary additions highlighted. Finally, a test component is used in conjunction with a prototype of the advanced global manufacturing system to demonstrate the applicability of the STEP-NC standard to support manufacturing information in such a system.
