Many problems in engineering analysis and design involve searching solutions of a system of equations. In most cases, because these equations are highly coupled and non‐linear and thus unlikely to yield close‐form solutions, researchers seek possible solutions using numerical techniques. In this paper, we present a ‘Continuous Design Transmutation Method’, a numerical method based on the polynomial continuation theory that has been discussed in recent works appearing in engineering literature. Our model departs from similar approaches in that its start system and homotopy are based on physical design and not pure mathematical equations. To avoid singularity on real paths, we introduce a heuristic disturbance mechanism. First, we simplify target design in order to construct a design that possesses both a similar structure and known solutions. Then, we construct a homotopy between the governing equations of the simplified design and those of the target design. The solutions of the target problem emerge as one tracks the solutions of the simplified design's governing equations as these incrementally evolve from the simplified design into the target design. Using our method, one tracks only isolated solutions of the simplified problem. All of the extraneous paths have been eliminated before the solution‐tracking procedure begins. As a result, not only can one easily interpret, in physical terms, the transmutation process, but one can also monitor the design feature changes. In this paper, we demonstrate our method as applied to two sample problems: a five‐point position‐generation problem for a planar four‐bar mechanism and a function‐generation problem for an RSSR linkage. Using multiple quantitative and qualitative methods to examine engineering design learning, we found that students taking a course in engineering design and/or studying engineering for four years acquired engineering design language that is common to a larger community of practice as well as common to their own programs and institutions of higher learning. The study also suggests that engineering design language shapes the knowledge that students have about engineering design. Finally, students did not always put their design knowledge into practice, suggesting the need for educational improvements and research to bridge this gap. 相似文献

In the fall of 1994 we reorganized the content of our three-course introductory computer science sequence in order to introduce software engineering concepts early and provide a consistent software engineering focus from one course to the next. To implement these changes, we established detailed documentation and design standards. These standards would serve as a framework for teaching the software engineering principles and techniques that we considered appropriate and essential to novice software developers. In an attempt to assess the impact of this new teaching approach, we examined student performance in upper-level, project-oriented courses with respect to early exposure to software engineering concepts. This paper describes the documentation and design standards, as well as how these standards have been used as a framework for teaching software engineering concepts early in the curriculum. It also reports on what we have learned through assessment of this approach. Results indicate that students exposed early to software engineering concepts are indeed better prepared for upper-level project-oriented courses. 相似文献

Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline environments is one of the major energy conversion processes in water electrolysis technology. Very active and cost-effective catalysts are highly desirable for alkaline HER not only for its industrial value but also for its fundamental importance in studying all electrocatalytic reactions occurring on cathode electrodes. However, to date, the reaction mechanism of alkaline HER is still under debate, which makes the design of catalysts largely a trial-and-error process. To address this issue, here we present strategies for the design of alkaline HER catalysts based on the current knowledge of the reaction mechanism by emphasizing the connection between the atomic-level materials engineering and reaction fundamentals. Particularly, we focus on the improvement of the inherent electronic structure of the materials to achieve desired interactions between the catalysts and reactive intermediates. By showing several successful examples of both theoretical and experimental design strategies, we aim to provide direct guidelines toward the design of catalysts for HER under alkaline conditions. 相似文献
