Four experiments are reported examining the locus of structural similarity effects in picture recognition and naming with normal subjects. Subjects carried out superordinate categorization and naming tasks with picture and word forms of clothing, furniture, fruit, and vegetable exemplars. The main findings were as follows: (1) Responses to pictures of fruit and vegetables ("structurally similar" objects) were slowed relative to pictures of clothing and furniture ("structurally dissimilar" objects). This structural similarity difference was greater for picture naming than for superordinate categorization of pictures. (2) Structural similarity effects in picture naming were reduced by repetition priming. Repetition priming effects were equivalent from picture and word naming as prime tasks. (3) However, superordinate categorization of the prime did not produce the structural similarity effects on priming found for picture naming. Furthermore, such priming effects did not arise for picture or word categorization or for reading picture names as target tasks. It is proposed that structural similarity effects on priming object processing are located in processes mapping semantic representations of pictures to name representations required to select names for objects. Visually based competition between fruit and vegetables produces competition in name selection, which is reduced by priming the mappings between semantic and name representations.  相似文献

A series of 8 experiments investigated the association between pictorial and verbal representations and the psychological distance of the referent objects from the observer. The results showed that people better process pictures that represent proximal objects and words that represent distal objects than pictures that represent distal objects and words that represent proximal objects. These results were obtained with various psychological distance dimensions (spatial, temporal, and social), different tasks (classification and categorization), and different measures (speed of processing and selective attention). The authors argue that differences in the processing of pictures and words emanate from the physical similarity of pictures, but not words, to the referents. Consequently, perceptual analysis is commonly applied to pictures but not to words. Pictures thus impart a sense of closeness to the referent objects and are preferably used to represent such objects, whereas words do not convey proximity and are preferably used to represent distal objects in space, time, and social perspective. Patients with dementia of the Alzheimer's type (DAT) and matched normal controls were given three tests of syntactic comprehension in which nonlinguistic visual and memory task demands were varied. In all tasks, subjects were presented spoken semantically reversible sentences with a variety of syntactic structures and required to match the sentence to a picture. In the first experiment, subjects matched the spoken sentence to one of two pictures that appeared either before or immediately following the presentation of the sentence. The target picture depicted the spoken sentence correctly and the foil depicted the reversed thematic roles to those in the sentence (i.e., it was a syntactic foil). The second experiment employed a sentence video-verification task in which subjects were required to determine if the spoken sentence matched a videotaped depiction of the action in the sentence or a syntactic foil. In the third experiment, in different conditions, subjects were required to determine whether the spoken sentence matched a single picture or to choose the picture that matched the sentence from an array of two or three pictures. In this experiment, both lexical and syntactic foils were used. In all tasks, DAT patients were affected by the number of propositions in the presented sentence, but not by the syntactic complexity of the sentence. Control subjects also were unaffected by the syntactic complexity of the sentence; the number-of-proposition effect was present in some experiments in the control population. Comparison of performance across the one-, two-, and three-picture versions of the task showed that the magnitude of the effect of number of propositions increased as the number of pictures in the array increased. In addition, analysis of the data from each of the tasks separately showed that the effect of number of propositions only occurred when subjects were attempting to match the target to a syntactic foil (one-picture version) or to choose between the target and a syntactic foil (two- and three-picture versions). The results support the view that patients with DAT do not have disturbances affecting syntactic processing. In addition, they suggest that the effect of number of propositions arises at a stage of analysis that is partially separate from assigning sentence meaning, such as in holding a representation of the sentence in memory until the pictures can be analyzed and encoded and/or in comparing the results of the picture analysis with a stored representation of the sentence meaning.  相似文献

The respective influences of exposure and inborn neural networks on conspecific and nonconspecific face processing remain unclear. Although the importance of exposure in the development of object and face recognition in general is well documented, studies explicitly comparing face recognition across species showed a species-specific effect. For instance, laboratory monkeys exposed daily to human faces were better at discriminating monkeys than humans, suggesting that the role of exposure may not be the only factor affecting cross-species recognition. In the present study, the authors investigated conspecific and nonconspecific face recognition in chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) from 2 primate centers that provided different exposure to chimpanzee and human faces. The authors showed that the chimpanzees from the center providing more exposure to human faces than to chimpanzee faces were better at discriminating human faces than they were at discriminating chimpanzee faces. The chimpanzees from the other center did not show the same effect. A computational simulation was developed to evaluate the average similarities among human pictures and among chimpanzee pictures. Both categories were comparable. Chimpanzees' scores were significantly correlated with the similarity coefficients. Investigated whether and how pictures are mentally rotated to upright before they can be named. Four experiments were conducted with 12 college students in each, who were given the tasks of naming pictures of common objects with various orientations and locating their tops. In the naming task, Ss required more time the farther the picture was from upright, but the rotation effect was reduced after Ss had named each picture once, indicating that rotation may be required only for unfamiliar stimuli. The top locating task was faster with upright figures, but otherwise-oriented pictures required the same time regardless of orientation. Top-locating was faster than naming, indicating that "topness" may be guessed even in unfamiliar figures, while naming also involves searching one's semantic memory for a name. Three studies assessed the ability of 2-year-olds to use semantic context to infer the meanings of novel nouns and to retain those meanings a day later. In the first experiment, 24 2-year-olds heard novel nouns in sentences that contained semantically constraining verbs (e.g., "Mommy feeds the ferret"). They chose from a set of four novel object pictures to indicate the referent. Children learned a majority of the novel words. However, they occasionally failed to choose the correct object even when they understood the verb. Experiment 2 examined whether this was due to an inability to identify some of the pictures of novel objects. Experiment 3 tested 24 2-year-olds' memory for the newly learned nouns following a 24 hr delay and found significant retention. Results are discussed in terms of learning mechanisms that facilitate vocabulary acquisition in young children.  相似文献

Behavioral as well as electrophysiological evidence suggests that words are processed differently than pictures in a variety of tasks. In this study fifteen adult subjects were tested on a speeded "same-different" judgment task between printed names and drawings of common objects. In one condition, subjects decided on the identity between their internal image of the object that was named by S1 (word) and a subsequently presented drawing of an object (Word-Picture condition). In a second condition, comparisons were made on the basis of the name of the depicted object (Picture-Word trials). Event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded from 12 scalp locations in response to the second item in each pair. No-match waveforms were characterized by larger N350 and P500 deflections compared to Match ERPs. The two responses could be distinguished on the basis of their lateral and anterior-posterior scalp distribution. Within-form comparisons involving pictures produced increased positivity between 150 and 600 ms poststimulus onset at posterior recording sites, whereas the opposite effect was noted at anterior sites during the early portion of the ERP. Decisions on word stimuli were associated with prolonged reaction time and longer N350 peak latency compared to decisions on pictures. These results demonstrate the existence of independent sources of ERP variability, each possibly reflecting a different aspect of cognitive comparisons. Latency and reaction time data provided valuable information regarding differences in the course of the comparison process when linguistic, as opposed to pictorial, stimuli/representations were involved.  相似文献

The ability of patients with neglect to process information in the contralateral field was examined by comparing performance on a cross-field matching and a forced-choice identification task. The matching task required participants to judge whether 2 laterally presented pictures were the same or different. The identification task required selection of 1 of 2 centrally presented pictures that were identical to a lateralized target. As a group, neglect patients performed at chance on the identification task but significantly above chance on the cross-field matching task. However, the dissociation between matching and identification was present only for patients whose identification performance was at chance; patients with above-chance identification performed equally well on both tasks. Mechanisms underlying the matching and identification performance of both patient subgroups are discussed in light of procedural differences between the tasks. Replicated Y. Trope's (see record 1976-09902-001) study, by investigating the effects of 2 person characteristics (achievement motivation and perceived own ability) and 2 task characteristics (difficulty and diagnostic value about own ability) on choice among achievement tasks. Ss were 104 male high school students. In accordance with the results of Trope, it was found that high-diagnostic tasks were preferred to low-diagnostic tasks, independent of their difficulty. Trope's finding that high resultant achievers choose high-diagnostic tasks over low-diagnostic tasks to a greater extent than low resultant achievers was not replicated. The perceived degree of own ability affected choice behavior: When easy and difficult tasks were both high in diagnosticity, Ss high in perceived ability preferred difficult over easy tasks, whereas Ss low in perceived ability preferred easy over difficult tasks. It is concluded that a self-informational conception of choice behavior has to include the subjective probability of success at tasks as a determinant of choice, in addition to objective difficulty and diagnostic value. In this article the operation of a direct visual route to action in response to objects, in addition to a semantically mediated route, is demonstrated. Four experiments were conducted in which participants made gesturing or naming responses to pictures under deadline conditions. There was a cross-over interaction in the number of visual errors relative to the number of semantic plus semantic-visual errors in the two tasks: In gesturing, compared with naming, participants made higher proportions of visual errors and lower proportions of semantic plus semantic-visual errors (Experiments 1, 3, and 4). These results suggest that naming and gesturing are dependent on separate information-processing routes from stimulus to response, with gesturing dependent on a visual route in addition to a semantic route. Partial activation of competing responses from the visual information present in objects (mediated by the visual route to action) leads to high proportions of visual errors under deadline conditions. Also, visual errors do not occur when gestures are made in response to words under a deadline (Experiment 2), which indicates that the visual route is specific to seen objects.  相似文献

The potential effect of gender on intellectual abilities remains controversial. The purpose of this research was to analyze gender differences in cognitive test performance among children from continuous age groups. For this purpose, the normative data from 7 domains of the newly developed neuropsychological test battery, the Evaluación Neuropsicológica Infantil [Child Neuropsychological Assessment] (Matute, Rosselli, Ardila, & Ostrosky-Solis, 2007), were analyzed. The sample included 788 monolingual children (350 boys, 438 girls) ages 5 to 16 years from Mexico and Colombia. Gender differences were observed in oral language (language expression and language comprehension), spatial abilities (recognition of pictures seen from different angles), and visual (Object Integration Test) and tactile perceptual tasks, with boys outperforming girls in most cases, except for the tactile tasks. Gender accounted for only a very small percentage of the variance (1%–3%). Gender × Age interactions were observed for the tactile tasks only. It was concluded that gender differences during cognitive development are minimal, appear in only a small number of tests, and account for only a low percentage of the score variance. The ability to recall features of environments not present to the senses is important in human thinking, planning, and communication, but to date there are almost no data on recall capabilities in nonverbal animals. In this study, the author used symbol knowledge as a tool to study chimpanzee memory. An 11-year-old female chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) that had already learned a large number of arbitrarily designated geometric forms (lexigrams) watched as an experimenter hid an object in the woods outside her outdoor enclosure. The type and location of the object varied across trials. After an imposed delay of up to 16 h, the chimpanzee could interact indoors with a person who did not know that an object had been hidden, let alone the type or location of the object. A keyboard in the indoor cage displayed 256 lexigrams. From Trial 1, the chimpanzee seemed to do whatever it took to catch the person's attention and then touched the lexigram corresponding to the type of object hidden, pointed outdoors, went outdoors (if followed), and continued to point manually toward the object and vocalize until the person found the object. Previous studies have reported that backgrounds depicting linear perspective and texture gradients influence relative size discrimination in nonhuman animals (known as the “corridor illusion”), but research has not yet identified the other kinds of depth cues contributing to the corridor illusion. This study examined the effects of linear perspective and shadows on the responses of a chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) to the corridor illusion. The performance of the chimpanzee was worse when a smaller object was presented at the farther position on a background reflecting a linear perspective, implying that the corridor illusion was replicated in the chimpanzee (Imura, Tomonaga, & Yagi, 2008). The extent of the illusion changed as a function of the position of the shadows cast by the objects only when the shadows were moving in synchrony with the objects. In this research, we asked whether 2 chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) subjects could reliably sum across pairs of quantities to select the greater total. Subjects were allowed to choose between two trays of chocolates. Each tray contained two food wells. To select the tray containing the greater number of chocolates, it was necessary to sum the contents of the food wells on each tray. In experiments where food wells contained from zero to four chocolates, the chimpanzees chose the greater value of the summed wells on more than 90% of the trials. In the final experiment, the maximum number of chocolates assigned to a food well was increased to five. Choice of the tray containing the greater sum still remained above 90%. In all experiments, subjects reliably chose the greater sum, even though on many trials a food well on the "incorrect" tray held more chocolates than either single well on the "correct" tray. It was concluded that without any known ability to count, these chimpanzees used some process of summation to combine spatially separated quantities. 为分析胶结砂岩的力学响应和破坏机理,基于试验建立不同刚度比的三维颗粒流数值模型,验证数值模型的可行性,并分析不同胶结性状的砂岩力学响应,进一步说明胶结物质的重要作用及模型的适用性.分析颗粒接触刚度比和平行黏结刚度与颗粒接触刚度的比值变化时,砂岩的应力比、体应变、配位数和平行黏结破坏数的变化规律以及对模型的泊松比、初始刚度和延性的影响.结果表明:不同的颗粒刚度比对岩样宏观力学响应的影响不同,颗粒接触刚度比越小,且切向刚度越大时,胶结砂岩的脆性越强;平行黏结刚度与颗粒接触刚度的比值越大,脆性越强,黏结破坏越容易,剪切破坏越明显.颗粒刚度对胶结砂岩的力学响应和变形能力有重要的影响,是实际储层砂岩力学模拟选择有效细观参数和构建本构关系的关键.  相似文献

Social referencing is the seeking of information from another individual and the use of that information to evaluate a situation. It is a well-documented ability in human infants but has not been studied experimentally in nonhuman primates. Seventeen young nursery-reared chimpanzees (14 to 41 months old) were observed in a standard social referencing paradigm in which they received happy and fear messages concerning novel objects from a familiar human caregiver. Each chimpanzee looked referentially at their caregiver, and the emotional messages that they received differentially influenced their gaze behavior and avoidance of the novel objects. It is concluded that chimpanzees can acquire information about their complex social and physical environments through social referencing and can use emotional information to alter their own behavior. Investigated interference effects between the processing of simultaneously presented photographs of faces of familiar people and printed names of familiar people in 5 experiments each with 12 adult Ss. Results show that printed names interfered with identifying faces, whereas faces did not interfere with saying printed names. In contrast, faces interfered more with name categorization than names interfered with face categorization. It is suggested that despite a priori reasons as to why faces might be thought to possess functional properties different from those of other visual objects, the observed effects are comparable to those found in object–word interference studies, with photographs of faces behaving like pictures of objects and printed people's names behaving like printed names of objects. In face naming tasks, the presence of related names produced more interference than did the presence of unrelated names. This effect was examined in greater detail in Exp III, where it was found that the effect arose when the face and the name belonged to people of similar appearance. An effect of common category membership was not found in Exp III. Exp V, however, showed that names of people highly associated with the person whose face was presented also produced more interference than did names of unrelated people. Functional activation (measured with fMRI) in occipital cortex was more extensive when participants view pictures strongly related to primary motive states (i.e., victims of violent death, viewer-directed threat, and erotica). This functional activity was greater than that observed for less intense emotional (i.e., happy families or angry faces) or neutral images (i.e., household objects, neutral faces). Both the extent and strength of functional activity were related to the judged affective arousal of the different picture contents, and the same pattern of functional activation was present whether pictures were presented in color or in grayscale. It is suggested that more extensive visual system activation reflects "motivated attention," in which appetitive or defensive motivational engagement directs attention and facilitates perceptual processing of survival-relevant stimuli. Perirhinal cortex ablation has previously been shown only to impair new postoperative object discrimination learning with large stimulus set sizes (≥40 problems). In this study, 3 cynomolgus monkeys (Macaca fascicularis) with bilateral perirhinal cortex ablations were impaired relative to 3 normal controls on concurrent discrimination learning tasks with only 10 problems with the objects presented in different orientations in each trial to increase the demands placed on object identification. This supports the hypothesis that perirhinal cortex damage impairs the ability to identify multiple individual objects. Fewer errors were made to digitized images of objects than toward real objects. Both groups subsequently transferred specific object-reward associations from real objects to digitized images of the respective objects and vice versa, providing evidence that cynomolgus monkeys can recognize photographic representations of objects with experience.
