Artificial surfaces represent one of the key land cover types, and validation is an indispensable component of land cover mapping that ensures data quality. Traditionally, validation has been carried out by confronting the produced land cover map with reference data, which is collected through field surveys or image interpretation. However, this approach has limitations, including high costs in terms of money and time. Recently, geo-tagged photos from social media have been used as reference data. This procedure has lower costs, but the process of interpreting geo-tagged photos is still time-consuming. In fact, social media point of interest (POI) data, including geo-tagged photos, may contain useful textual information for land cover validation. However, this kind of special textual data has seldom been analysed or used to support land cover validation. This paper examines the potential of textual information from social media POIs as a new reference source to assist in artificial surface validation without photo recognition and proposes a validation framework using modified decision trees. First, POI datasets are classified semantically to divide POIs into the standard taxonomy of land cover maps. Then, a decision tree model is built and trained to classify POIs automatically. To eliminate the effects of spatial heterogeneity on POI classification, the shortest distances between each POI and both roads and villages serve as two factors in the modified decision tree model. Finally, a data transformation based on a majority vote algorithm is then performed to convert the classified points into raster form for the purposes of applying confusion matrix methods to the land cover map. Using Beijing as a study area, social media POIs from Sina Weibo were collected to validate artificial surfaces in GlobeLand30 in 2010. A classification accuracy of 80.68% was achieved through our modified decision tree method. Compared with a classification method without spatial heterogeneity, the accuracy is 10% greater. This result indicates that our modified decision tree method displays considerable skill in classifying POIs with high spatial heterogeneity. In addition, a high validation accuracy of 92.76% was achieved, which is relatively close to the official result of 86.7%. These preliminary results indicate that social media POI datasets are valuable ancillary data for land cover validation, and our proposed validation framework provides opportunities for land cover validation with low costs in terms of money and time.  相似文献

Four 1 km global land cover products are currently available to the scientific community: the University of Maryland (UMD) global land cover product, the International Geosphere–Biosphere Programme Data and Information System Cover (IGBP‐DISCover), the MODerate resolution Imaging Spectrometer (MODIS) global land cover product and Global Land Cover 2000 (GLC2000). Because of differences in data sources, temporal scales, classification systems and methodologies, it is important to compare and validate these global maps before using them for a variety of studies at regional to global scales. This study aimed to perform the validation and comparison of the four global land cover datasets, and to examine the suitability and accuracy of different coarse spatial resolution datasets in mapping and monitoring cropland across China. To meet this objective, we compared the four global land cover products with the National Land Cover Dataset 2000 (NLCD‐2000) at three scales to evaluate the accuracy of estimates of aggregated cropland areas in China. This was followed by a spatial comparison to assess the accuracies of the four products in estimating the spatial distribution of cropland across China. A comparative analysis showed that there are varying levels of apparent discrepancies in estimating the cropland of China between these four global land cover datasets, and that both area totals and spatial (dis)agreement between them vary from region to region. Among these, the MODIS dataset has the best fit in depicting China's croplands. The coarse spatial resolution and the per pixel classification approach, as well as landscape heterogeneity, are the main reasons for the large discrepancies between the global land cover datasets tested and the reference data.  相似文献

Information about the extent of impervious surface and its rate of development is a valuable indicator of urban growth and environmental quality and thus relevant for a wide range of research related to urban ecosystems. Using SPOT-5 data from 2005 to 2009, impervious surface was estimated at a subpixel level for the area of Can Tho province in the Mekong Delta, based on a Support Vector Regression model. Training data comprised a set of SPOT-5 reflectance values each associated with an individual value of subpixel imperviousness as their respective labels. The latter were obtained on the basis of a land cover map, which in turn was derived from a pansharpened QB subset by means of an object-oriented image classification approach. In addition, by varying different sets of training data in the model building process the spectral interrelationships between the urban land cover classes (water, bare soil, vegetation, and impervious surface) and their effect on the estimation of subpixel imperviousness could be examined. In order to exclude irrelevant areas (natural/undeveloped land) from the impervious surface estimation process, single-polarised TerraSAR-X data were used to delineate settlement areas by an object-oriented image classification approach. Furthermore, a change detection method was applied for the respective time period in order to test the suitability of the approach for the automated detection of structural developments within the urban topography. Settlement areas were correctly identified with overall accuracies between 81% and 94%, whilst the comparison of the modelled impervious estimates to the training values gave an absolute mean error below 15%. The results prove the suitability of the approach for an area-wide but selective mapping and monitoring of impervious surface cover within settlement areas only.  相似文献

Accurate maps of land cover at high spatial resolution are fundamental to many researchs on carbon cycle, climate change monitoring and soil degradation. Google Earth Engine is a cloud-based platform that makes it easy to access high-performance computing resources for processing very large geospatial datasets. It offer opportunities for generating land cover maps designed to meet the increasingly detailed information needs for science, monitoring, and reporting. In this study, we classified the land cover types in Shanxi using Landsat time series data based on the Google Earth Engine Platform. We selected 1 580 sample points be visual interpretation of the original fine spatial resolution images along with Google Earth historical images over six different cover types. We defined training data by randomly sampling 60% of the sample points. The remaining 40% was used for validation. We generated two diffirent types of Landsat composite: (1) one based on median values which is used as the input image for single-date classification; (2)one based on percentile values which is used as input images for time series classification. Random forest classification was performed with two different types of Landsat composites. Random forest classification was performed with two different types of Landsat composites. We visually compared the single-date based to the time series based cover maps of 1990, 2000, 2010 and 2017 in five local areas, and we future compared the results of time series to other products. We aslo performed an accuracy assessment on the land cover classification products. The results shown: (1) The results of time series classification had an overall accuracy of 84%~94%. The time series results improved overall accuracy by 5%~10% compared to single-date results; (2) The result of time series achieves the classification accuracy of products such as CNLUCC, GlobeLand30 and FROM-GLC.The following conclusions were drawn: (1) Cloud computing and archived Landsat data in the GEE has many advantages for land cover classification at a large geographic scale, such as s strong timeliness, short time cycle and low cost; (2) The statistics metrics from Landsat time series is a viable means for discrimination of land cover types, which is particularly useful for the time series classification.  相似文献

Multispectral airborne laser scanning (MS-ALS) sensors are a new promising source of data for automated mapping methods. Finding an optimal time for data acquisition is important in all mapping applications based on remotely sensed datasets. In this study, three MS-ALS datasets acquired at different times of the growing season were compared for automated land cover mapping and road detection in a suburban area. In addition, changes in the intensity were studied. An object-based random forest classification was carried out using reference points. The overall accuracy of the land cover classification was 93.9% (May dataset), 96.4% (June) and 95.9% (August). The use of the May dataset acquired under leafless conditions resulted in more complete roads than the other datasets acquired when trees were in leaf. It was concluded that all datasets used in the study are applicable for suburban land cover mapping, however small differences in accuracies between land cover classes exist.  相似文献

Satellite imagery is the major data source for regional to global land cover maps. However, land cover mapping of large areas with medium-resolution imagery is costly and often constrained by the lack of good training and validation data. Our goal was to overcome these limitations, and to test chain classifications, i.e., the classification of Landsat images based on the information in the overlapping areas of neighboring scenes. The basic idea was to classify one Landsat scene first where good ground truth data is available, and then to classify the neighboring Landsat scene using the land cover classification of the first scene in the overlap area as training data. We tested chain classification for a forest/non-forest classification in the Carpathian Mountains on one horizontal chain of six Landsat scenes, and two vertical chains of two Landsat scenes each. We collected extensive training data from Quickbird imagery for classifying radiometrically uncorrected data with Support Vector Machines (SVMs). The SVMs classified 8 scenes with overall accuracies between 92.1% and 98.9% (average of 96.3%). Accuracy loss when automatically classifying neighboring scenes with chain classification was 1.9% on average. Even a chain of six images resulted only in an accuracy loss of 5.1% for the last image compared to a reference classification from independent training data for the last image. Chain classification thus performed well, but we note that chain classification can only be applied when land cover classes are well represented in the overlap area of neighboring Landsat scenes. As long as this constraint is met though, chain classification is a powerful approach for large area land cover classifications, especially in areas of varying training data availability.  相似文献

Hyperion, IKONOS, ALI, and ETM+ sensors in the study of African rainforests   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4
The goal of this research was to compare narrowband hyperspectral Hyperion data with broadband hyperspatial IKONOS data and advanced multispectral Advanced Land Imager (ALI) and Landsat-7 Enhanced Thematic Mapper Plus (ETM+) data through modeling and classifying complex rainforest vegetation. For this purpose, Hyperion, ALI, IKONOS, and ETM+ data were acquired for southern Cameroon, a region considered to be a representative area for tropical moist evergreen and semi-deciduous forests. Field data, collected in near-real time to coincide with satellite sensor overpass, were used to (1) quantify and model the biomass of tree, shrub, and weed species; and (2) characterize forest land use/land cover (LULC) classes. The study established that even the most advanced broadband sensors (i.e., ETM+, IKONOS, and ALI) had serious limitations in modeling biomass and in classifying forest LULC classes. The broadband models explained only 13-60% of the variability in biomass across primary forests, secondary forests, and fallows. The overall accuracies were between 42% and 51% for classifying nine complex rainforest LULC classes using the broadband data of these sensors. Within individual vegetation types (e.g., primary or secondary forest), the overall accuracies increased slightly, but followed a similar trend. Among the broadband sensors, ALI sensor performed better than the IKONOS and ETM+ sensors. When compared to the three broadband sensors, Hyperion narrowband data produced (1) models that explained 36-83% more of the variability in rainforest biomass, and (2) LULC classifications with 45-52% higher overall accuracies. Twenty-three Hyperion narrowbands that were most sensitive in modeling forest biomass and in classifying forest LULC classes were identified and discussed.  相似文献

Remote sensing is the main means of extracting land cover types, which has important significance for monitoring land use change and developing national policies.Object-based classification methods can provide higher accuracy data than pixel-based methods by using spectral, shape and texture information. In this study,we choose GF-1 satellite’s imagery and proposed a method which can automatically calculate the optimal segmentation scale. The object-based methods for classifying four typical land cover types are compared using multi-scale segmentation and three supervised machine learning algorithms. The relationship between the accuracy of classification results and the training sample proportion is analyzed and the result shows that object-based methods can achieve higher classification results in the case of small training sample ratio, overall accuracies are higher than 94%.Overall,the classification accuracy of support vector machine is higher than that of neural network and decision tree during the process of object-oriented classification.  相似文献

Remote sensing has considerable potential for providing accurate, up-to-date information in urban areas. Urban remote sensing is complicated, however, by very high spectral and spatial complexity. In this paper, Multiple Endmember Spectral Mixture Analysis (MESMA) was applied to map urban land cover using HyMap data acquired over the city of Bonn, Germany. MESMA is well suited for urban environments because it allows the number and types of endmembers to vary on a per-pixel basis, which allows controlling the large spectral variability in these environments. We employed a hierarchical approach, in which MESMA was applied to map four levels of complexity ranging from the simplest level consisting of only two classes, impervious and pervious, to 20 classes that differentiated material composition and plant species. Lower levels of complexity, mapped at the highest accuracies, were used to constrain spatially models at higher levels of complexity, reducing spectral confusion between materials. A spectral library containing 1521 endmembers was created from the HyMap data. Three endmember selection procedures, Endmember Average RMS (EAR), Minimum Average Spectral Angle (MASA) and Count Based Endmember Selection (COB), were used to identify the most representative endmembers for each level of complexity. Combined two-, three- or four-endmember models - depending on the hierarchical level - were applied, and the highest endmember fractions were used to assign a land cover class. Classification accuracies of 97.2% were achieved for the two lowest complexity levels, consisting of impervious and pervious classes, and a four class map consisting of vegetation, bare soil, water and built-up. At the next level of complexity, consisting of seven classes including trees, grass, bare soil, river, lakes/basins, road and roof/building, classification accuracies remained high at 81.7% with most classes mapped above 85% accuracy. At the highest level, consisting of 20 land cover classes, a 75.9% classification accuracy was achieved. The ability of MESMA to incorporate within-class spectral variability, combined with a hierarchical approach that uses spatial information from one level to constrain model selection at a higher level of complexity was shown to be particularly well suited for urban environments.  相似文献

Abstract

A simple geometrical model has been proposed for a citrus canopy. We assume the citrus orchard to be a lattice structure, with the trees positioned at its points and where the composite-scene reflectance is the sum of the reflectance of its individual components as weighted by their respective surfaces within a unit area. The model has been used to analyse the citrus spectral response obtained from Landsat-5 TM images for winter and summer, where the status of the orchard is different. The correlations between spectral and geometrical data show the influence of per cent crop cover, shadows and background in the composite scene reflectance. We conclude that the summer images could be more useful than the winter ones for parcel classification according to per cent crop cover.  相似文献

Information related to land cover is immensely important to global change science. In the past decade, data sources and methodologies for creating global land cover maps from remote sensing have evolved rapidly. Here we describe the datasets and algorithms used to create the Collection 5 MODIS Global Land Cover Type product, which is substantially changed relative to Collection 4. In addition to using updated input data, the algorithm and ancillary datasets used to produce the product have been refined. Most importantly, the Collection 5 product is generated at 500-m spatial resolution, providing a four-fold increase in spatial resolution relative to the previous version. In addition, many components of the classification algorithm have been changed. The training site database has been revised, land surface temperature is now included as an input feature, and ancillary datasets used in post-processing of ensemble decision tree results have been updated. Further, methods used to correct classifier results for bias imposed by training data properties have been refined, techniques used to fuse ancillary data based on spatially varying prior probabilities have been revised, and a variety of methods have been developed to address limitations of the algorithm for the urban, wetland, and deciduous needleleaf classes. Finally, techniques used to stabilize classification results across years have been developed and implemented to reduce year-to-year variation in land cover labels not associated with land cover change. Results from a cross-validation analysis indicate that the overall accuracy of the product is about 75% correctly classified, but that the range in class-specific accuracies is large. Comparison of Collection 5 maps with Collection 4 results show substantial differences arising from increased spatial resolution and changes in the input data and classification algorithm.  相似文献

Several investigations indicate that the Bidirectional Reflectance Distribution Function (BRDF) contains information that can be used to complement spectral information for improved land cover classification accuracies. Prior studies on the addition of BRDF information to improve land cover classifications have been conducted primarily at local or regional scales. Thus, the potential benefits of adding BRDF information to improve global to continental scale land cover classification have not yet been explored. Here we examine the impact of multidirectional global scale data from the first Polarization and Directionality of Earth Reflectances (POLDER) spacecraft instrument flown on the Advanced Earth Observing Satellite (ADEOS-1) platform on overall classification accuracy and per-class accuracies for 15 land cover categories specified by the International Geosphere Biosphere Programme (IGBP).

A set of 36,648 global training pixels (7 × 6 km spatial resolution) was used with a decision tree classifier to evaluate the performance of classifying POLDER data with and without the inclusion of BRDF information. BRDF ‘metrics’ for the eight-month POLDER on ADEOS-1 archive (10/1996–06/1997) were developed that describe the temporal evolution of the BRDF as captured by a semi-empirical BRDF model. The concept of BRDF ‘feature space’ is introduced and used to explore and exploit the bidirectional information content. The C5.0 decision tree classifier was applied with a boosting option, with the temporal metrics for spectral albedo as input for a first test, and with spectral albedo and BRDF metrics for a second test. Results were evaluated against 20 random subsets of the training data.

Examination of the BRDF feature space indicates that coarse scale BRDF coefficients from POLDER provide information on land cover that is different from the spectral and temporal information of the imagery. The contribution of BRDF information to reducing classification errors is also demonstrated: the addition of BRDF metrics reduces the mean, overall classification error rates by 3.15% (from 18.1% to 14.95% error) with larger improvements for producer's accuracies of individual classes such as Grasslands (+ 8.71%), Urban areas (+ 8.02%), and Wetlands (+ 7.82%). User's accuracies for the Urban (+ 7.42%) and Evergreen Broadleaf Forest (+ 6.70%) classes are also increased. The methodology and results are widely applicable to current multidirectional satellite data from the Multi-angle Imaging Spectroradiometer (MISR), and to the next generation of POLDER-like multi-directional instruments.  相似文献

Land use and land‐cover (LULC) data provide essential information for environmental management and planning. This research evaluates the land‐cover change dynamics and their effects for the Greater Mankato Area of Minnesota using image classification and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) modelling in high‐resolution aerial photography and QuickBird imagery. Results show that from 1971 to 2003, urban impervious surfaces increased from 18.3% to 32.6%, while cropland and grassland decreased from 54.2% to 39.1%. The dramatic urbanization caused evident environmental impacts in terms of runoff and water quality, whereas the annual air pollution removal rate and carbon storage/sequestration remained consistent since urban forests were steady over the 32‐year span. The results also indicate that highly accurate land‐cover features can be extracted effectively from high‐resolution imagery by incorporating both spectral and spatial information, applying an image‐fusion technique, and utilizing the hierarchical machine‐learning Feature Analyst classifier. This research fills the high‐resolution LULC data gap for the Greater Mankato Area. The findings of the study also provide valuable inputs for local decision‐makers and urban planners.  相似文献
