Presents a report from the American Psychological Association's treasurer for the year 1977. Because APA's activities and materials are largely in publications, and since these constitute over half of our annual revenues, the first part of this year's Treasurer's Report is devoted to a selective overview of our publication programs and operations. The financial portion of the report includes (a) a report of the 1976 audited results from operations; (b) a look at APA's financial condition as of December 31, 1976; (c) a prediction for 1977; (d) a review of the 1978 approved budget; and (e) a projection for 1979. Presents the Treasurer's report to the members of the American Psychological Association. The report has the following purposes: (a) to inform the membership concerning the financial affairs of the Association in the prior year (1967), (b) to indicate the Association's present fiscal status, and (c) to look to the future financially in providing the activities and services the membership requests and expects from their Association. Tables cover data for income and expenses, a comparative balance sheet, estimated budgets for 1968 and 1969, and consolidated operations estimates. The report concludes that additional sources of revenues must be obtained if the Association is to support its present programs and achieve its objectives as a viable association. Reports an error in the 2002 Annual Report of the American Psychological Association (American Psychologist, 2003[Aug], Vol 58[8], 509-540). In Philip G. Zimbardo's President's Address that appeared in the August 2003 edition of the American Psychologist, the word "minority" was inadvertently omitted from the second full paragraph on page 529. The paragraph should read as follows: I facilitated new members' talking more and some old timers' talking less, added an open microphone time during which nonagenda issues could be raised by anyone, encouraged the APA council to take more charge in developing new visions for APA and its governance (which has eventuated in a new Task Force on Governance), and introduced the "Changing Demographics" presentation to make members aware of the new look that is emerging in the composition of the United States. In addition, I strongly endorsed passage of the new ethics code revision (spearheaded by Celia Fisher), creation of a voting seat on the APA council and a nonvoting seat on the APA board for an American Psychological Association of Graduate Students representative, addition of the term education to APA's mission statement, and proposals to increase minority representation on the APA council and all APA boards and committees. From a financial point of view, 1985 was a year of change for APA. There were important endings and beginnings, and some aspects of the APA's long-range financial prospects became clearer. The author uses this year's Treasurer's report to take a hard look at where the APA is and where the APA may be going. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Reports increased activity, due in part to the fact that 8 state associations have disbanded their ethics committees or are using them solely for educative and referral purposes. 47 cases were adjudicated and closed during 1986, and 91 cases remained active. Other activities of the Ethics Committee over the year are described with respect to an ethics case book, an ethics resource center, workshops, and convention activities. A position paper on required psychotherapy for students is presented, specifically with regard to psychologists providing confidentiality to students in therapy as part of their training and the conflicts of interest that can arise when the psychologist adopts the dual role of therapist/professor. Reports an error in the original article by Richard C. Atkinson (American Psychologist, 1968[Apr]). The last sentence of the first column on page 231 should read as follows: (b) Items for which the correct answer is an adjective are more difficult to comprehend than items in which the correct answer is a noun or verb; similarly, verbs are more difficult than nouns. (The following abstract of this article originally appeared in record 2005-10451-001). Discusses developments in the field of computer assisted instruction (CAI), focusing on the Stanford Project, initiated in 1964 under a grant from the Office of Education to develop and implement a CAI program in initial reading and mathematics. A progress report deals with the reading program with particular reference to the past school year, when for the first time a sizable group of students received a major portion of their daily reading instruction under computer control. The first year's operation must be considered essentially as an extended debugging of both the computer system and the curriculum materials. Nevertheless, some interesting comments can be made on the basis of this experience regarding both the feasibility of CAI and the impact of such instruction on the overall learning process. Parts of the project addressed include the CAI reading curriculum, problems in implementing the curriculum, and some results from the first year of operation with first grade students.
