RÉSUMÉ: A Temporal-Abstraction System for Patient Monitoring

RÉSUMÉ is a system that performs temporal abstraction of time-stamped data. The temporal-abstraction task is crucial for planning treatment, for executing treatment plans, for identifying clinical problems, and for revising treatment plans. The RÉSUMÉ system is based on a model of three basic temporal-abstraction mechanisms: point temporal abstraction, a mechanism for abstracting the values of several parameters into a value of another parameter; temporal inference, a mechanism for inferring sound logical conclusions over a single interval or two meeting intervals; and temporal interpolation, a mechanism for bridging nonmeeting temporal intervals. Making explicit the knowledge required for temporal abstraction supports the acquisition and the sharing of that knowledge. We have implemented the RESUME system using the CLIPS knowledge-representation shell. The RÉSUMÉ system emphasizes the need for explicit representation of temporal-abstraction knowledge, and the advantages of modular, task-specific but domain-independent architectures for building medical knowledge-based systems.

Évaluation de la reprÉsentativitÉ spatiale thermique des stations mÉtÉorologiques du rÉseau d'Andalousie

The present paper aims to present a new approach allowing evaluation of the spatial representativity of the air temperature measured at meteorological stations. Taking into account NOAA-AVHRR derived surface temperatures and environmental data of the station surroundings, an evaluation of the meteorological network is made. A series of surface temperature maps are prepared from NOAA-AVHRR images. The spatial variability of the thermal field around each station is analysed together with the environmental conditions and as a function of the season. The zone of spatial representativity for each meteorological station is then defined. The paper presents preliminary results obtained for some meteorological stations in Andalusia in southern Spain. Le présent article vise â présenter une nouvelle approche permettant d'évaluer la représentativité spatiale de la température mesurée aux stations météorologiques. Ainsi en considérant les données satellitaires NOAA-AVHRR et l'information relative au cadre environnementale de la station, une evaluation des réseaux de mesure est possible. À l'aide des images NOAA-AVHRR une cartographie des temperatures de surface est effectuée. L'analyse de la variabilite spatiale des champs thermiques autour de chaque station en relation avec le cadre environnemental et saisonnier de celles-ci est alors effectuee. Une zone de representativité spatiale pour chaque station de mesure est alors définie. Nous vous presentons les resultats préliminaires que nous avons obtenus pour quelques stations d'observation du réseau de stations météorologiques de l'Andalousie dans le sud de l'Espagne.

Man is emerging as the creator of his own destiny, consciously or unconsciously, and man's image of the future is a key to that future coming into being.

HOW DIFFICULT IS IT TO INVENT A NONTRIVIAL GAME?

Everyone who has ever tried to invent a new game knows that it is very difficult to make it nontrivial. In this paper, we explain this empirical fact by showing that almost all games (in some reasonable sense) are trivial. We also estimate the number of nontrivial games and compare this number with the number of all possible games of a given size.
