Torsional response of fiber-reinforced polymeric (FRP) composites is more complex than conventional materials. Therefore, understanding torsional response of FRP components along with shear behavior leads to development of safe and accurate design specifications. Experimental data of multicellular FRP bridge deck components have been compared with simplified theoretical model studies focused on torsional rigidity, equivalent in-plane shear modulus, in-plane shear strain, and joint efficiency. Simplified classical lamination theory (SCLT) is used to predict torsional rigidity. Results from SCLT, experimental data, and finite-element analysis validate proposed methodology to find torsional rigidity. Data on torsional rigidity and equivalent in-plane shear modulus correlated (less than 12%) with results from SCLT and finite-element analysis. In-plane shear strain based on SCLT is also concordant with test results. In an FRP deck system with 100% joint efficiency, the two-dimensional effect (plate action) on torsional rigidity results in a 20% higher rigidity when compared to a beam model. However, if a refined model has only 80% joint efficiency, then plate action results in a 6% difference from the beam model. In addition, service load design criteria for FRP decks under shear must not excess 16% of the ultimate strain by accounting for environmental and aging effects. 相似文献

In the United States alone, about 30% of the bridges are classified as structurally deficient or functionally obsolete. To alleviate this problem, a great deal of work is being conducted to develop versatile, fully composite bridge systems using fiber-reinforced polymers (FRPs). To reduce the self-weight and also achieve the necessary stiffness, FRP bridge decks often employ hollow sandwich configurations, which may make the dynamic characteristics of FRP bridges significantly different from those of conventional concrete and steel bridges. Due to the geometric complexity of the FRP sandwich panels, dynamic analyses of FRP bridges are very overwhelming and rarely reported. The present study develops an analysis procedure for the vehicle-bridge interaction based on a three-dimensional vehicle-bridge coupled model. The vehicle is idealized as a combination of rigid bodies connected by a series of springs and dampers. A slab FRP bridge, the No-Name Creek Bridge in Kansas, is first modeled using the finite-element method to predict its modal characteristics, then the bridge and vehicle systems are integrated into a vehicle-bridge system based on the deformation compatibility. The bridge response is obtained in the time domain by using an iterative procedure employed at each time step, considering the deck surface roughness as a vertical excitation to the vehicle. The bridge dynamic response and the calculated impact factors are compared between the FRP slab bridge and a corresponding concrete slab bridge. Finally, the applicability of AASHTO impact factors to FRP bridges is discussed. 相似文献

A set of column-footing subassemblies were prepared to investigate construction feasibility and seismic performance of structural joints for concrete-filled fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) tubes (CFFT) as bridge substructure. Based on the common practices of the precast industry and previous research on CFFT, the test matrix included a control reinforced concrete (RC) column and three CFFT columns, all with similar RC footings. The three CFFT columns included a cast-in-place CFFT column with starter bars, a precast CFFT column with grouted starter bars, and a precast CFFT column with unbonded posttensioned rods. The columns were subjected to a constant axial load and a pseudostatic lateral load. All proposed joints proved feasible in construction and robust under extreme load conditions. FRP tube, when secured properly in the footing, showed great influence on the seismic performance of the column by providing both longitudinal reinforcement and hoop confinement to the core concrete. The CFFT columns exhibited significant improvement over traditional RC columns in both ultimate strength and ductility. The study also showed that practices of the precast concrete industry can be easily and effectively implemented for the CFFT column construction. 相似文献

Durable repairs of bridge piles exposed to a marine environment require a proper repair design, which includes understanding and preventing the deterioration mechanism in such environments and proper construction methods. To understand how repair systems work, it is important to recognize which deterioration mechanism the system prevents and controls. Conversely, to understand why a system does not work, one must determine the deterioration mechanisms that the system failed to control. The deterioration mechanism should be addressed before repair construction starts so that an appropriate solution can be achieved. Also, construction practices that accelerate deterioration mechanisms should be recognized and avoided. This paper describes efficient construction methods that can be incorporated in the construction of bridge pile repairs. It also gives recommendations to increase the life of a bridge pile repair by analyzing deterioration of repaired structures, defining the cause of deterioration, providing suggestions to enhance the performance of the repair by practical and feasible actions, and giving an integrated approach to bridge repair construction processes. 相似文献

Research has been carried out to evaluate the structural behavior and influence of aging on a century-old steel railroad truss bridge. The structure is located in Connecticut and services a large number of trains traveling into and out of New York City. The trusses are made of built-up members, with either multiple eyebars or laced channel sections. All panel point connections are joined with true pins and the interior panels are indeterminate. The bridge had experienced problems relating to the lateral shifting of some of the middepth pins. This study was carried out to evaluate the structural behavior and live load distribution throughout the bridge. A major component of the research involved extensive field monitoring. The results show that the actual live load distribution is significantly different than expected from conventional analytical approaches that were most likely used in the original design. The load distribution in multiple eyebar elements is far from uniform, and the distribution of shear through indeterminate panels is significantly different than expected from a normal truss analysis. Significant out-of-plane bending was found in the truss due to floorbeam end rotations, which is thought to be the major factor that is causing the pins to move. The study shows the necessity of using field monitoring to better understand the behavior of older bridges prior to the design of renovation approaches. 相似文献

Recently, there has been a rapid increase in using noncorrosive fiber-reinforced polymers (FRP) reinforcing bars as alternative reinforcement for bridge deck slabs, especially those in harsh environments. A new two-span girder type bridge, Cookshire-Eaton Bridge (located in the municipality of Cookshire, Quebec, Canada), was constructed with a total length of 52.08 m over two equal spans. The deck was a 200-mm-thick concrete slab continuous over four spans of 2.70 m between girders with an overhang of 1.40 m on each side. One full span of the bridge was totally reinforced using glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars, while the other span was reinforced with galvanized steel bars. The bridge deck was well instrumented at critical locations for internal temperature and strain data collection using fiber optic sensors. The bridge was tested for service performance using calibrated truckloads as specified by the Canadian Highway Bridge Design Code. The construction procedure and field test results under actual service conditions revealed that GFRP rebar provides very competitive performance in comparison to steel. 相似文献

Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite bridge deck panels are high-strength, corrosion resistant, weather resistant, etc., making them attractive for use in new construction or retrofit of existing bridges. This study evaluated the force-deformation responses of FRP composite bridge deck panels under AASHTO MS 22.5 (HS25) truck wheel load and up to failure. Tests were conducted on 16 FRP composite deck panels and four reinforced concrete conventional deck panels. The test results of FRP composite deck panels were compared with the flexural, shear, and deflection performance criteria per Ohio Department of Transportation specifications, and with the test results of reinforced concrete deck panels. The flexural and shear rigidities of FRP composite deck panels were calculated. The response of all panels under service load, factored load, cyclic loading, and the mode of failure were reported. The tested bridge deck panels satisfied the performance criteria. The safety factor against failure varies from 3 to 8. 相似文献

The MD 24 Bridge over Deer Creek in Harford County, Md., was one of the projects chosen by the Federal Highway Administration’s Innovative Bridge Research and Construction Program for bridge deck replacement by fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. A thorough discussion is presented on Maryland State Highway Administration’s first bridge rehabilitation project utilizing a FRP deck. The discussion includes design details, installation procedure, construction methods and in situ load testing with a wireless monitoring system. The research team installed a monitoring system to record the effects of live loads on the bridge system, including truss members, steel stringers, and plate action of the FRP deck. Finite-element models were also used in this phase. Dynamic effects of the FRP system, composite action between steel stringers and the FRP deck as well as the effective width and distribution factors of stringers were obtained and compared with the AASHTO specifications. Recommendations are also offered on improving the design details based on this experience. 相似文献

Near-surface-mounted (NSM) reinforcement has become a well-known method for strengthening existing concrete structures. The bond between the NSM reinforcing bars and concrete is the key factor in the NSM technique. In the NSM technique, there are two bond interfaces: one between the NSM bar and the adhesive, and the other between the adhesive and the concrete. For this technique to perform efficiently, these two interfaces need to be investigated. On the other hand, concrete structures that require rehabilitation are often exposed to aggressive environments. Many of these environments are related to cold-climate conditions as can be found in Canada. Environmental factors including freeze/thaw action, exposure to deicing salts, and sustained low temperatures combine to attack the integrity of repaired structures. Consequently, repair materials for the Canadian infrastructure must be able to withstand these harsh conditions for prolonged periods of time. A total of 80 NSM-fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars installed in C-shaped concrete specimens were tested in pull-out setup to failure. Sixty specimens were tested at normal room temperature, while the remaining 20 specimens were tested after conditioning in an environmentally controlled chamber for 200 freeze/thaw cycles. The dimensions of the specimens were designed, upon a preliminary phase of testing, to ensure that no transverse cracking would occur in the specimen before bond failure of the NSM bar. The results are presented in term of failure load, average bond stress, strains in FRP bar, end slip, and mode of failure. A bond-slip model was proposed for the used FRP bars. 相似文献

The research presented in this paper evaluates the flexural performance of bridge deck panels reinforced with 2D fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) grids. Two different FRP grids were investigated, one reinforced with a hybrid of glass and carbon fibers and a second grid reinforced with carbon fibers only. Laboratory measured load-deflection, load-strain (reinforcement and concrete), cracking, and failure behavior are presented in detail. Conclusions regarding failure mode, limit-state strength, serviceability, and deflection compatibility relative to AASHTO mandated criteria are reported. Test results indicate that bridge decks reinforced with FRP grids will be controlled by serviceability limit state and not limit-state ultimate strength. The low axial stiffness of FRP results in large service load flexural deflections and reduced shear strength. In as much as serviceability limits design, overreinforcement is recommended to control deflection violation. Consequently, limit-state flexural strength will be compression controlled for which reduced service stresses or ACI unified compression failure strength reduction factors are recommended. 相似文献

For military and civilian applications, there exists a need for lightweight, inexpensive, short-span bridges that can be easily transported and erected with minimal equipment. Owing to its favorable properties, fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) has been shown to be feasible for the construction of such bridges. Investigations into the behavior of a short-span bridge structural concept, adapted to the material properties of commercially available glass FRP (GFRP) pultruded products, are presented. A 4.8-m span prototype was built from GFRP sections, bonded throughout to form a tapered box beam, with a width of 1.2?m and a height at midspan of approximately 0.5?m. The box beam represents a single trackway of a double-trackway bridge, whose trackways could be connected by light structural elements. The quasi-static and dynamic behavior of the prototype box beam was investigated in ambient laboratory and field conditions to assess the design and construction techniques used, with a view to designing a full-scale 10-m GFRP bridge. Laboratory testing of the prototype box beam used single and pairs of patch loads to simulate wheel loading. These tests confirmed that the box beam had sufficient stiffness and strength to function effectively as a single trackway of a small span bridge. Field testing of the structure was undertaken using a Bison vehicle (13,000?kg), driven at varying speeds over the structure to establish its response to realistic vehicle loads and the effects of their movement across the span. 相似文献

Innovative fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite highway bridge deck systems are gradually gaining acceptance in replacing damaged/deteriorated concrete and timber decks. FRP bridge decks can be designed to meet the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) HS-25 load requirements. Because a rather complex sub- and superstructure system is used to support the FRP deck, it is important to include the entire system in analyzing the deck behavior and performance. In this paper, we will present a finite-element analysis (FEA) that is able to consider the structural complexity of the entire bridge system and the material complexity of an FRP sandwich deck. The FEA is constructed using a two-step analysis approach. The first step is to analyze the global behavior of the entire bridge under the AASHTO HS-25 loading. The next step is to analyze the local behavior of the FRP deck with appropriate load and boundary conditions determined from the first step. For the latter, a layered FEA module is proposed to compute the internal stresses and deformations of the FRP sandwich deck. This approach produces predictions that are in good agreement with experimental measurements. 相似文献

This paper addresses the laboratory and field performance of multicellular fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite bridge deck systems produced from adhesively bonded pultrusions. Two methods of deck contact loading were examined: a steel patch dimensioned according to the AASHTO Bridge Design Specifications, and a simulated tire patch constructed from an actual truck tire reinforced with silicon rubber. Under these conditions, deck stiffness, strength, and failure characteristics of the cellular FRP decks were examined. The simulated tire loading was shown to develop greater global deflections given the same static load. The failure mode is localized and dominated by transverse bending failure of the composites under the simulated tire loading as opposed to punching shear for the AASHTO recommended patch load. A field testing facility was designed and constructed in which FRP decks were installed, tested, and monitored to study the decks’ in-service field performance. No significant loss of deck capacity was observed after more than one year of field service. However, it was shown that unsupported edges (or free edges) are undesirable due to transitional stiffness from approach to the unsupported deck edge. 相似文献

The upgrading of bridges located in seismic areas and built according to obsolete codes is becoming a priority task for highway administrations. Among the possible upgrading strategies, the use of fiber-reinforced plastic (FRP) jackets is gaining widespread acceptance. In this paper, a design equation is proposed to determine the optimal thickness of FRP jackets, to enhance the ductility of existing reinforced-concrete (RC) bridge piers with circular cross sections. The design procedure stems from the definition of an upgrading index, given as the ratio of the target to availability ductility at the pier base section, to be attained through FRP jacketing. The available ductility is that identified through the usual assessment procedures on the RC member set for upgrade, whereas the target ductility is evaluated based on the expected actions on the bridge. The upgrading index is initially defined in general terms and is subsequently extended to the case of piers built in seismic regions. It results in a simple expression in terms of easily computable quantities, such as the ultimate strain and the peak strength of concrete, before and after upgrading. A parametric study on old-code–designed bridge pier sections, upgraded with either glass or carbon fiber jackets, is performed based on a fiber-section model equipped with a newly developed FRP-confined concrete model. This study shows that the index, despite its simplicity, yields excellent predictions of the ductility increase obtained through FRP wrapping, and it is therefore used to develop a design equation. The equation allows the design of the optimal thickness of FRP jackets in terms of the desired upgrading index, mechanical characteristics of the selected composite material, and quantities defining the initial state of the pier section. The design procedure has been applied to available experimental tests of a scaled bridge pier wrapped with FRP and tested to failure, and it has been demonstrated to be very effective. 相似文献

Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites are increasingly being used in bridge deck applications. However, there are currently only fledgling standards to design and characterize FRP deck systems. One area that should be addressed is the loading method for the FRP deck. It has been observed that the type of loading patch greatly influences the failure mode of a cellular FRP deck. The contact pressure distribution of a real truck loading is nonuniform with more concentration near the center of the contact area as a result of the conformable contact mechanics. Conversely, the conventional rectangular steel patch on a FRP deck act like a rigid flat punch and produces stress concentration near the edges. A proposed simulated tire patch has been examined for loading a cellular FRP deck with the load distribution characterized by a pressure sensitive film sensor and three-dimensional contact analysis using ANSYS. A loading profile is proposed as a design tool for analyzing FRP deck systems for strength and durability. Local top surface strains and displacements of the cellular FRP deck are found to be higher with proposed loading profile compared to those for the conventional uniformly distributed loading. Parametric studies on the deck geometry show that the global displacement criterion used for characterizing bridge deck is inadequate for a cellular FRP deck and that the local effects must be considered. 相似文献

An experimental investigation was performed to assess the projected fatigue performance of a fiber-reinforced polymer honeycomb bridge that has recently been completed in Troupsburg, N.Y. The laboratory specimen was representative of a 305-mm-wide strip of the completed bridge. The specimen was first subjected to fatigue loading. Load, displacement, and strain were measured every 25,000 cycles. The data indicated minimum signs of degradation after 2 million cycles of fatigue loading, as reflected in slightly increased values of vertical deflection and strain at midspan. After completion of the fatigue loading, the specimen was evaluated with acoustic emission. Load was statically applied and increased incrementally until failure occurred at a load level exceeding 16 times the fatigue level loading. The results of the static testing also indicated that only minor damage occurred due to fatigue. Field load testing of the actual bridge has been completed by the New York State Department of Transportation, and the results are discussed as they pertain to the fatigue and static load testing programs described. 相似文献

Fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composite materials are increasingly making their way into civil engineering applications. To reduce the self-weight and also achieve the necessary stiffness, sandwich panels are commonly used for FRP bridge decks. However, due to the geometric complexity of the FRP sandwich deck, convenient analysis and design methods for FRP bridge deck have not been developed. The present study aims at developing equivalent properties for a complicated sandwich panel configuration using finite-element modeling techniques. With equivalent properties, the hollowed sandwich panel can be transformed into an equivalent solid orthotropic plate, based on which deflection limits can be evaluated and designed. A procedure for the in-plane axial properties of the sandwich core has first been developed, followed by developing the out-of-plane panel properties for bending behavior of the panel. An application is made in the investigation of the stiffness contribution of wearing surface to the total stiffness of bridges with FRP panels. The wearing surface contribution is not usually accounted for in a typical design of bridges with traditional deck systems. 相似文献

The use of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) composites for new construction is still limited primarily due to high costs and designs based on shapes best suitable to conventional materials. The layered and fiber dominated structure of FRP composites is most efficient when used under in-plane stress demands. Structural forms that most efficiently use tensile stress carrying capacity are membranes or thin shells. An analytical investigation is presented where an innovative optimization algorithm for the integrated shape and laminate optimization of free-form FRP shells was developed and used to generate two new bridge systems that efficiently use FRP composites in membrane-based forms. One concept makes use of a FRP membrane working compositely with a concrete slab to resist flexure while the second uses the FRP membrane in a dual suspension system supporting a deck through diaphragms. The resulting designs and a discussion on their performance under optimal and nonoptimal loading are presented. While practical issues are still to be resolved, the presented approach and concepts can promote and provide insight to efficient structural forms for FRP composites. 相似文献

No appropriate provisions from either AASHTO Standard (2002) or AASHTO LRFD (2004) bridge design specifications are available for the design of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP)-deck-on-steel-superstructure bridges. In this research, a parametric study using the finite-element method (FEM) is conducted to examine two design issues concerning the design of FRP-deck-on-steel-superstructure bridges, namely deck relative deflection and load distribution factor (LDF). Results show that the strip method specified in AASHTO LRFD specification as an approximate method of analysis, can also be applied to FRP decks as a practical method. However, different strip width equations have to be determined by either FEM or experimental methods for different types of FRP decks. In this study, one such equation has been derived for the Strongwell deck. In addition, both FEM results and experimental measurements show that the AASHTO LDF equations for glued laminated timber decks on steel stringers provide good estimations of LDF for FRP-deck-on-steel-superstructure bridges. Finally, it is found that the lever rule can be used as an appropriately conservative design method to predict the LDF of FRP-deck-on-steel-superstructure bridges. 相似文献
