A 2-D optical ultrasound receive array has been investigated. The transduction mechanism is based upon the detection of acoustically induced changes in the optical thickness of a thin polymer film acting as a Fabry-Perot sensing interferometer (FPI). By illuminating the sensor with a large-area laser beam and mechanically scanning a photodiode across the reflected output beam, while using a novel angle-tuned phase bias control system to optimally set the FPI working point, a notional 2-D ultrasound array was synthesized. To demonstrate the concept, 1-D and 2-D ultrasound field distributions produced by planar 3.5-MHz and focused 5-MHz PZT ultrasound transducers were mapped. The system was also evaluated by performing transmission ultrasound imaging of a spatially calibrated target. The "array" aperture, defined by the dimensions of the incident optical field, was elliptical, of dimensions 16 x 12 mm and spatially sampled in steps of 0.1 mm or 0.2 mm. Element sizes, defined by the photodiode aperture, of 0.8, 0.4, and 0.2 mm were variously used for these experiments. Two types of sensor were evaluated. One was a discrete 75-microm-thick polyethylene terephthalate FPI bonded to a polymer backing stub which had a wideband peak noise-equivalent pressure of 6.5 kPa and an acoustic bandwidth 12 MHz. The other was a 40-microm Parylene film FPI which was directly vacuum-deposited onto a glass backing stub and had an NEP of 8 kPa and an acoustic bandwidth of 17.5 MHz. It is considered that this approach offers an alternative to piezoelectric ultrasound arrays for transducer field characterization, transmission medical and industrial ultrasound imaging, biomedical photoacoustic imaging, and ultrasonic nondestructive testing.  相似文献

Theoretical and experimental aspects of an extrinsic optical-fiber ultrasound sensor are described. The sensor is based on a thin transparent polymer film acting as a low-finesse Fabry-Perot cavity that is mounted at the end of a multimode optical fiber. Performance was found to be comparable with that of a piezoelectric polyvinylidene dinuoride-membrane (PVDP) hydrophone with a sensitivity of 61 mV/MPa, an acoustic noise floor of 2.3 KPa over a 25-MHz bandwidth, and a frequency response to 25 MHz. The wideband-sensitive response and design flexibility of the concept suggests that it may find application as an alternative to piezoelectric devices for the detection and measurement of ultrasound.  相似文献

A model of the frequency-dependent directivity of a planar, optically-addressed, Fabry-Perot (FP), polymer film ultrasound sensor is described and validated against experimental directivity measurements made over a frequency range of 1 to 15 MHz and angles from normal incidence to 80 degrees. The model may be used, for example, as a predictive tool to improve sensor design, or to provide a noise-free response function that could be deconvolved from sound-field measurements in order to improve accuracy in high-frequency metrology and imaging applications. The specific question of whether effective element sizes as small as the optical-diffraction limit can be achieved was investigated. For a polymer film sensor with a FP cavity of thickness d, the minimum effective element radius was found to be about 0.9 d, and that an illumination spot radius of less than d/4 is required to achieve it.  相似文献

The transduction mechanisms of a wideband (30 MHz) contact ultrasound sensor based upon the use of a thin polymer film acting as a Fabry-Perot interferometer have been investigated. Polyethylene terepthalate (PET) sensing elements, illuminated by the free-space collimated output of a wavelength-tunable DBR laser diode, have been used to study the sensor transfer function, sensitivity, the effect of water absorption, and frequency response characteristics. Acoustic performance was evaluated by comparing the sensor output with that of a calibrated PVDF membrane hydrophone using laser-generated acoustic transients as a source of broadband ultrasound. An ultrasonic acoustic phase sensitivity of 0.1 rad/MPa, a linear operating range to 5 MPa, and a noise-equivalent-pressure of 20 kPa over a 25 MHz measurement bandwidth were obtained using a water-backed 50 mum PET sensing film. A model of frequency response that incorporates the effect of an adhesive layer between the sensor film and backing material has been developed and validated for different sensing film thicknesses, backing configurations, and adhesive layer thicknesses.  相似文献

Near infrared (NIR) photo-responsive polyaniline-based conducting thin films are developed for sensor application. Upon NIR illumination (2.43 W/cm2), the electrical conductance of the polyaniline thin films was enhanced 5.9% and the response time was 20 s. NIR sensing performance of polyaniline conducting polymer thin film is comparable with that of bolometric carbon nanotube (CNT) network devices with the merits of polymers over CNTs such as processability, productivity and economy.  相似文献

An optical system for rapidly mapping broad-band ultrasound fields with high spatial resolution has been developed. The transduction mechanism is based upon the detection of acoustically induced changes in the optical thickness of a thin polymer film acting as a Fabry Perot sensing interferometer (FPI). By using a PC-controlled galvanometer mirror to line-scan a focused laser beam over the surface of the FPI, and a wavelength-tuned phase bias control system to optimally set the FPI working point, a notional 1D ultrasound array was synthesized. This system enabled ultrasound fields to be mapped over an aperture of 40 mm, in 50-microm steps with an optically defined element size of 50 microm and an acquisition time of 50 ms per step. The sensor comprised a 38-microm polymer film FPI which was directly vacuum-deposited onto an impedance-matched polycarbonate backing stub. The -3 dB acoustic bandwidth of the sensor was 300 kHz to 28 MHz and the peak noise-equivalent-pressure was 10 kPa over a 20-MHz measurement bandwidth. To demonstrate the system, the outputs of various planar and focused pulsed ultrasound transducers with operating frequencies in the range 3.5 to 20 MHz were mapped. It is considered that this approach offers a practical and inexpensive alternative to piezoelectric-based arrays and scanning systems for rapid transducer field characterization and biomedical and industrial ultrasonic imaging applications.  相似文献

This paper describes the design and implementation of a versatile, open-architecture research data acquisition system using a commercially available medical ultrasound scanner. The open architecture will allow researchers and clinicians to rapidly develop applications and move them relatively easy to the clinic. The system consists of a standard PC equipped with a camera link and an ultrasound scanner equipped with a research interface. The ultrasound scanner is an easy-to-use imaging device that is capable of generating high-quality images. In addition to supporting the acquisition of multiple data types, such as B-mode, M-mode, pulsed Doppler, and color flow imaging, the machine provides users with full control over imaging parameters such as transmit level, excitation waveform, beam angle, and focal depth. Beamformed RF data can be acquired from regions of interest throughout the image plane and stored to a file with a simple button press. For clinical trials and investigational purposes, when an identical image plane is desired for both an experimental and a reference data set, interleaved data can be captured. This form of data acquisition allows switching between multiple setups while maintaining identical transducer, scanner, region of interest, and recording time. Data acquisition is controlled through a graphical user interface running on the PC. This program implements an interface for third-party software to interact with the application. A software development toolkit is developed to give researchers and clinicians the ability to utilize third-party software for data analysis and flexible manipulation of control parameters. Because of the advantages of speed of acquisition and clinical benefit, research projects have successfully used the system to test and implement their customized solutions for different applications. Three examples of system use are presented in this paper: evaluation of synthetic aperture sequential beamformation, transverse oscillation for blood velocity estimation, and acquisition of spectral velocity data for evaluating aortic aneurysms.  相似文献

This paper describes a method for spatial encoding in synthetic transmit aperture ultrasound imaging. This allows several ultrasonic sources to be active simultaneously. The method is based on transmitting pseudorandom sequences to spatially encode the transmitters. The data can be decoded after only one transmission using the knowledge of the transmitted code sequences as opposed to other spatial encoding techniques, such as Hadamard or Golay encoding. This makes the method less sensitive to motion, and data can be acquired using fewer transmissions. The aim of this paper is to analyze the underlying theory and to test the feasibility in a physical system. The method has been evaluated in simulations using Field II in which the point-spread functions were simulated for different depths for a 7 MHz linear array transducer. A signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) simulation also was included in the study in which an improvement in SNR of approximately 1.5 dB was attained compared to the standard synthetic transmit aperture (STA) firing scheme. Considering the amount of energy transmitted, this value is low. A plausible explanation is given that is verified in simulation. The method also was tested in an experimental ultrasound scanner and compared to a synthetic transmit aperture ultrasound imaging scheme using a sinusoidal excitation. The performance of the proposed method was comparable to the reference with respect to axial and lateral resolution, but it displayed poorer contrast with sidelobe levels at approximately - 40 dB compared to the mainlobe.  相似文献

Clinical translation of photoacoustic (PA) imaging can be facilitated by integration with commercial ultrasound (US) scanners to enable dual-modality imaging. An array-based US scanner was modified for hand-held PA imaging. The performance was benchmarked in terms of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), axial spatial resolution and sensitivity. PA images of a tube, filled with methylene blue (MB; approx. 30?mM) and placed at various depths in chicken tissue, were acquired. A 5?cm penetration depth was achieved with an 18.6?dB SNR using a laser fluence of 3?mJ?cm(-2), only one-seventh of the safety limit (20?mJ?cm(-2)). An axial resolution of approximately 400?μm was maintained at all imaging depths. The PA sensitivity to MB placed 2.3?cm deep in chicken tissue was less than 100?μM. Further, after intradermal injection of MB (approx. 30?mM), a rat sentinel lymph node was clearly identified in vivo, beneath a 3.8?cm thick layer of chicken breast. The accumulated concentration of MB in the node was estimated to be approximately 7?mM. The noise-equivalent sensitivities (approx. 2?cm depth) were 17 and 85?μM, ex vivo and in vivo, respectively. These results support the use of this PA system for non-invasive mapping and image-guided needle biopsy of sentinel nodes in breast cancer patients.  相似文献

SPM based lithographic techniques have been developed to pattern various substrates such as metals, semiconductors, and organic/polymer films due to its simplicity and high spatial precision nanostructure. Fabrication of nanostructure using polymeric materials is a key technique for the development of nanodevices. Here, we report the fabrication of nanostructures from polyacrylicacid (PAA) and polymethacrylicacid (PMAA) film on a silicon substrate using atomic force microscope (AFM). The formation of the nanopattern from the polymer film was studied using electrostatic nanolithography and the optimization of the conditions for nanopatterning of the polymer film was investigated with respect to the applied potential and translational speed of the AFM tip. The nanostructure of size 28 nm was created using the biased AFM tip on the PMAA film coated on Si(100) substrate and found that this method is a direct and reliable method to produce uniform nanostructures on a polymer film.  相似文献

A highly sensitive magnetic sensor based on Y1Ba2Cu3O7−x (YBCO) has been fabricated by the spray technique. The value of resistance Rms in the transitional region ΔT of the thick film, was highly sensitive to the applied magnetic field Bex. Here, ΔT is the transitional temperature region between the resistance drop temperature Tconset and residual resistance temperature Tcres. The value of residual resistance Rres for an applied magnetic field of 80×10−4 T (80 G) exhibited an increase of about 580% over the resistance found in a zero magnetic field, and did not display any evidence of hysteresis. The fabrication and magnetic characteristics are discussed.  相似文献

This paper describes an effective approach to surface modification of a flexible polyimide film using a reactive fluorinated polymer nanosheet. N-(1H,1H-pentadecafluorooctyl)methacrylamide copolymers containing carboxyl group as a reactive moiety form stable monolayer on the water surface and highly ordered reactive polymer nanosheets can be fabricated by the Langmuir-Blodgett technique. This reactive fluorinated polymer nanosheet was utilized to modify the surface properties of polyimide film through its immobilization using thermal treatment. The modification process was studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and modified PI surface was characterized by contact angle measurements and atomic force microscopy (AFM).  相似文献

We present a novel approach allowing for a simple, fast and automated morphological analysis of three-dimensional image stacks (z-stacks) featuring fibrillar structures from optically cleared soft biological tissues. Five non-atherosclerotic tissue samples from human abdominal aortas were used to outline the multi-purpose methodology, applicable to various tissue types. It yields a three-dimensional orientational distribution of relative amplitudes, representing the original collagen fibre morphology, identifies regions of isotropy where no preferred fibre orientations are observed and determines structural parameters throughout anisotropic regions for the analysis and numerical modelling of biomechanical quantities such as stress and strain. Our method combines optical tissue clearing with second-harmonic generation imaging, Fourier-based image analysis and maximum-likelihood estimation for distribution fitting. With a new sample preparation method for arteries, we present, for the first time to our knowledge, a continuous three-dimensional distribution of collagen fibres throughout the entire thickness of the aortic wall, revealing novel structural and organizational insights into the three arterial layers.  相似文献

The detection characteristics for photoacoustic imaging of microcracks in silicon wafers were theoretically and quantitatively investigated using a numerical simulation. The simulation is based on a one-dimensional multilayered thermal diffusion model coupled with the thermal-wave impedance of each layer, the layer structures of which are constructed along the wafer surface and are variable according to the scanning position of the point heat source. As the modulation frequency was reduced, the spatial resolution of the temperature amplitude profile at the cracks decreased, showing good agreement with the experimentally obtained photoacoustic amplitude images. At a modulation frequency of 200 kHz, for cracks with narrow air gaps of up to 20 nm, which is much smaller than both the beam spot size of 1.5 microm and the thermal diffusion length of 12 microm, the temperature amplitude is twice that of regions without cracks, and the temperature contrast increased with an increase in the modulation frequency. These calculation results suggest the effectiveness of using a high modulation frequency, making it possible to detect microcracks of the order of 10 nm.  相似文献

In this paper a novel ultrasound tomography imaging system is presented. It employs a relatively small number of transducers that produce fan-shaped beam profile to effectively insonify the cross-section. The impact on the image quality due to the reduction of the number of transducers is discussed, and different approaches such as multiple receiver data acquisition and nonlinear thresholding are explored. A prototype of a tomographic imaging system with only 36 transducers has been constructed, and processing rates of up to 100 frames per second have been achieved using a parallel processing technique. Good image reconstructions based on simulations and real objects also are provided to confirm the principles of the theoretical analysis.  相似文献
