A number of caribou and muskoxen samples from the western Alaskan Arctic and fish samples from the Aleutian Islands were collected between 1998 and 2006 and analyzed for anthropogenic (90Sr and 137Cs) and natural radionculides (40 K, 210Pb and 226Ra), as part of the radiological assessment for the regional subsistence hunting communities in the first half of 2000s. We examined the relationship between the activities of these nuclides with the size of the fish. In caribou samples, concentration of 90Sr in muscle was below the detection limit of 0.14 Bq kg− 1 and 137Cs concentration in bones was below the detection limit of 0.15 Bq kg− 1.137Cs activity varied over an order of magnitude in caribou muscle samples with an average value of 2.5 Bq/kg wet wt. Average 137Cs activity in muskoxen muscle was found to be 9.7 Bq/kg wet wt. However, there were a little variation (less than 60%) in 210Pb, 40 K, and 226Ra in both muscle and bone of both caribou and muskoxen. The activities of total 210Pb in caribou and muskox bones were found to be 1-2 orders of magnitude higher than that of parent-supported 210Pb indicating the potential for dating of bones of terrestrial mammals (time elapsed since the death of the animal) based on the excess 210Pb method exists. In fish muscle samples, 137Cs activity varied from below detection limit to 154 mBq/kg wet wt. and its content increased with the size of the fish due to its transfer through the food chain. Among the seven fish species investigated, 210Pb activities varied almost an order of magnitude; however, 40K and 226Ra activities varied less than a factor of two. Total annual effective dose due to 90Sr and 137Cs from the ingestion of those terrestrial and marine meats was estimated to be negligible (ca. 9 μSV/a) compared to the natural radionuclides present thus posing negligible radiological threat to humans.  相似文献

Vertical profiles of environmental radionuclides (40K, 226Ra, 210Pb and 137Cs) were investigated in several temperate forest soils in Germany to estimate heterogeneity of the soil horizon of interest. Absolute values of the activity concentrations of these nuclides varied to a large extent depending on the properties of individual forests as well as local geology. Several trends were generally observed independent of the location: (1) Activity concentrations of 40K increased with increasing soil density reflecting that most potassium is contained in mineral components of the soil. The variations in the 40K activity with depth may relate to biological activities in subsoil, such as root uptake of the nutrients. (2) Profiles of 226Ra with depth could be an indicator for evaluating soil heterogeneity within a horizon of interest. They are also useful to estimate anthropogenic 210Pb (210Pbexc) derived from the atmosphere via dry fallout or wet deposition. In several forests, there appeared surface enrichment of 210Pb down to a depth of approximately 10 cm, in which the 210Pb would have come from the atmosphere by combustion of fossil fuels. (3) Depth profiles of 137Cs were roughly divided into three types in which (a) the activity concentration decreased exponentially with soil depth, (b) small amounts of 137Cs existed only in the upper-most layer of the soil (0-5 cm) and (c) 137Cs disappeared at certain depths and appeared again at deeper portions of the soil. Consequences of bioturbation could be deduced from variability in vertical profiles of the environmental radionuclides. It is probable that a site showing an exponential decrease of the 137Cs activity with depth and also having a surface enrichment of 210Pb is not significantly influenced by bioturbation.  相似文献

After the Chernobyl accident in April 1986 the 134Cs, 137Cs and 40K activity of mushrooms of different genera and their corresponding soils from woods located in the province of Umbria (Italy) was determined. The results indicated: a temporally increasing trend for 137Cs up to a "limit value" depending on local fallout in 1986; different cesium concentrations in various mushroom genera; and uptake of potassium from soil that did not appear to compete with cesium uptake. No reliable correlation can be inferred between the cesium content of the soil and those of mushrooms.  相似文献

The uptake and transfer of natural radionuclides, other than 40K, from soil to mushrooms has been somewhat overlooked in the literature. Their contribution to the dose due to the consumption of mushrooms was considered negligible. But the contribution of 210Pb in areas unaffected by any recent radioactive fallout has been found to be significant, up to 35% of the annual dose commitment in Spain. More than 30 species of mushrooms were analyzed, and the 210Pb detected was in the range of 0.75-202 Bq/kg d.w. A slight difference was observed between species with different nutritional mechanisms (saprophytes ≥ mycorrhizae). The 210Pb content was correlated with the stable lead content, but not with its predecessor in the uranium radioactive series, 226Ra. This suggested that 210Pb was taken up from the soil by the same pathway as stable lead. The bioavailability of 210Pb in soil was determined by means of a sequential extraction procedure (NH4OAc, 1M HCl, 6M HCl, and residue). About 30% of the 210Pb present in the soil was available for transfer to mushrooms, more than other natural radionuclides in the same ecosystem. Lycoperdon perlatum, Hebeloma cylindrosporum, and Amanita curtipes presented the highest values of the available transfer factor, ATF. As reflected in their ATF values, the transfer from soil to mushroom of some natural and anthropogenic radionuclides was in the following order:
228,230,232Th ≈ 40K ≥ 137Cs ≥ 234,238U ≈ 226Ra ≥ 90Sr ≥ 210Pb ≈ 239 + 240Pu ≈ 241Am.  相似文献

In situ gamma spectroscopy is widely utilized to determine the outdoor gamma dose rate from the soil and to calculate the natural and artificial radionuclide concentration and their contribution to the dose rate. The application of in situ gamma spectroscopy in indoor environments can not supply quantitative information about activity concentration of radionuclides in building materials, but this technique can provide interesting information about building materials as radon source. In fact, a method based on analyses of gamma spectra data has been developed by the authors to provide, in field, quantitative estimation of disequilibrium in 226Ra and 228Ac sub-chains due to 222Rn and 220Rn exhalation. The method has been applied to data of gamma spectroscopy measurements carried out with HPGe detector (26%) in seven dwellings and one office in Rome. The first results of the data analysis show that, as regards especially the 226Ra sub-chain disequilibrium, different building materials (tuff, concrete, etc.) can show very different characteristics. If, in addition to the spectrometric data, other indoor environment parameters (indoor gamma dose rates, room dimensions, wall thickness, etc.) (Bochicchio et al., Radiat Prot Dosim 1994;56(1-4):137-140; Bochicchio et al., Environ Int 1996a;22:S633-S639) are utilized in a room model, an evaluation of 226Ra, 228Ac and 40K activity concentration and an indication of the exhalation features, by means of estimation of exhaled 222Rn activity concentration, can be achieved.  相似文献

137Cs and 40K specific activity together with major and trace elements were determined in soil samples and in different edible wild mushroom species collected from a seminatural temperate forest ecosystem located in the central part of the Mexican Volcanic Belt. The activity measurements were made using a gamma-ray spectrometer system with a high purity germanium (HpGe) detector. The major and trace elements were determined using emission spectrography and mass spectrometry, respectively. The aggregated transfer factors for 137Cs were estimated in 30 local mushroom species collected from 1993 to 1999. Differences as large as three orders of magnitude were observed. The contribution of mushrooms for the total 137Cs dietary intake by the local population was estimated to be 37%. Mushrooms also showed to be good accumulators for Rb, Cu, Cs and Se.  相似文献

This paper presents results obtained from a radiometric survey, conducted by the Norwegian Radiation Protection Authority, into the levels of gamma-emitting radionuclides, both anthropogenic and natural, in the terrestrial environment of Kongsfjorden, which lies on the North-Western Coast of Spitsbergen in the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard (79 degrees N, 12 degrees E). Samples of terrestrial matrices were taken during field campaigns conducted between 2000 and 2002 and analysed for a range of gamma-emitting radionuclides. The objectives of this study included an assessment of the levels of gamma-emitting radionuclides in the terrestrial environment of the region, identification of processes and activities that influence the accumulation and redistribution of such nuclides within the region and elucidation of the behaviour of such radionuclides within a high arctic environment. Results indicate a quite homogenous spatial distribution of such radionuclides within the study area and highlight the relatively low levels of contamination by the anthropogenic radionuclide, 137Cs, on Svalbard. Average values and ranges of the radionuclides activities in surface soils (0-3 cm) were: 238U 42 Bq/kg (17-134), 226Ra 43 Bq/kg (12-137), 232Th 21 Bq/kg (4-52), 40K 283 Bq/kg (31-564), 137Cs 35 Bq/kg (1-146). Average levels of these nuclides in avian faecal materials were 238U 63 Bq/kg, 226Ra 54 Bq/kg, 232Th 19 Bq/kg, 40K 365 Bq/kg, 137Cs 78 Bq/kg. Enrichment of radionuclides is apparent in soils taken from locations close to bird colonies in the locale, maximum levels of the radionuclides being found in samples associated with such colonies. The results indicate that this is due to concentration of such radionuclides within the faecal material of the birds and subsequent enrichment of the nearby soils either via direct incorporation of the faeces into the soil or by leaching processes. The results indicate that this process may result in contamination of non-related species, such as Svalbard reindeer (Rangifer tarandus playrhynchus), via pathways other than the traditionally accepted route of atmospheric deposition-vegetation-reindeer.  相似文献

The paper presents the results of measurements on air and soil samples collected for their natural and artificial radioactivity content. The radionuclides studied under this programme are 7Be and 137Cs. Average activity concentrations in surface air of 7Be and 137Cs were found to be 1920 and 2.1 μBq m‐3, respectively. 137Cs activity concentration in surface soil is found to be 450m Bq kg‐1. Estimated effective doses to adult from inhaled 7Be and 137Cs were found to be 1 and 0.13 nSvy‐1, respectively.

The average outdoors absorbed dose rate in air, 1 m above the ground level was found to be (48 ± 4.0 nGy h‐1), based on the analysis of thermoluminescence dosimeters data collected.  相似文献

An assessment of Committed Effective Dose (CED) due to consumption of Red Sea fish containing (210)Po and (137)Cs was performed for 23 different marine fish samples collected from the local market at Port Sudan. The fish were classified according to their feeding habits into three categories: carnivores, herbivores, and omnivores. Measured activity concentrations of (210)Po were found in the ranges 0.25-6.42 (carnivores), 0.7-5 (omnivores) and 1.5-3.8 (herbivores) Bq/kg fresh weight. In the same study, activity concentrations of Cs-137 were determined to be in the ranges 0.1-0.46 (carnivores), 0.09-0.35 (omnivores) and 0.09-0.32 (herbivores) Bq/kg fresh weight, which were several times lower than those of (210)Po. Appropriate conversion factors were used to derive the CED, which was found to be 0.012, 0.01 and 0.01 (microSv/yr) in carnivores, omnivores and herbivores, respectively, for (137)Cs. This contributes about 0.4% of the total dose exclusively by ingestion of fish. For (210)Po, it was found to be 3.47, 4.81 and 4.14 (microSv/yr) in carnivores, omnivores and herbivores, respectively, which represents 99.6% of the total dose (exclusively by ingestion of fish). The results of CED calculations suggest that the dose received by the Sudanese population from the consumption of marine fish is rather small and that the contribution of (137)Cs is negligible compared to (210)Po.  相似文献

To determine the effect of airborne emissions of radionuclides from coal-fired power plants on the environment, the concentrations of the most important radionuclides were measured in soil samples from the local environments (0.4–5.2 km) as well as in fly ash. The spatial distribution of the radionuclides in the soil did not indicate any significantly increased concentrations in the area downwind of the plant compared to other areas; the ratios 210Pb/226Ra and 210Po/226Ra were within the range observed for unaffected soils. The emissions from the plant, though present, are obviously too small to significantly change the natural local distribution pattern of the radionuclides in the soil. A highly significant correlation between 40K and 232Th was observed which was independent of the different types of soils found in this area. The concentration of 137Cs in topsoil, which is the result of worldwide fallout from nuclear weapons testing, varied at some places even within a small distance (~ 2 km) by up to one order of magnitude. Furthermore, it was observed that the concentration of 137Cs in soils from cropland was on average a factor of 2 less than in those from grassland. This variability has to be considered in planning monitoring programs around nuclear power plants, which may also release this radionuclide.  相似文献

The purpose of this investigation was to compare the results of indirect measurements of radionuclide concentrations in water with those measured directly. The levels of 137Cs and 226Ra in western Lake Ontario nearshore waters were derived from high-resolution γ-spectrometric measurements on aluminum hydroxide sludge samples obtained from four water treatment plants. The concentrations of 137Cs evaluated by this indirect technique averaged 0.036 compared with 0.023 pCi l−1 measured directly, while those of 226Ra averaged 0.047 compared with the direct measurement of 0.03 pCi l−1. The concentrations of a number of other radionuclides at these locations were also calculated from the sludge γ-ray measurements.  相似文献

Measurements of (134)Cs and (137)Cs in Rozites caperatus from 1991 to 2001 showed differences in the uptake pattern of Chernobyl and fallout derived radiocesium over time. The effective half-life of Chernobyl derived (137)Cs was determined to 12.4 years, whereas fallout derived (137)Cs had an effective half-life of 9.8 years. However, the trend for Chernobyl derived (137)Cs was clearly not linear. An effective average half-life of 3.1 years was determined for Chernobyl derived (137)Cs in the period from 1991 to 1994. The corresponding ecological half-life was 3.4 years. In the period from 1994 to 2001 it is possible that the effective half-life was longer than the physical, which indicates that more Chernobyl cesium becomes available than disappears through radioactive decay. The difference may be due to depth distribution of radiocesium, i.e. fallout derived cesium have penetrated deeper than Chernobyl. The changes in the half-lives of Chernobyl derived radiocesium over time together with the half-life of the older fallout derived radiocesium may be valuable in predictions of future radiocesium concentrations in mushrooms and thereby of food chain transfer to man.  相似文献

Both Asian dust (kosa) transported from the East Asian continent and locally suspended dust near monitoring sites contribute to the observed atmospheric deposition of (137)Cs in Japan. To estimate the relative contribution of these dust phenomena to the total (137)Cs deposition, we monitored weekly deposition of mineral particles and (137)Cs in spring. Deposition of (137)Cs from a single Asian dust event was 62.3 mBq m(-2) and accounted for 67% of the total (137)Cs deposition during the entire monitoring period. Furthermore, we found high (137)Cs specific activity in the Asian dust deposition sample. Although local dust events contributed to (137)Cs deposition, their contribution was considerably smaller than that of Asian dust. We conclude that the primary source of atmospheric (137)Cs in Japan is dust transported from the East Asian continent.  相似文献

Mushrooms and soils samples collected from a sub-alpine forest of Mt. Fuji in Japan were measured for 137Cs and stable Cs. The ranges of 137Cs specific activities and stable Cs concentrations in the mushrooms were 291-7950 Bq kg(-1) dry weight and 4.69-58.1 mg kg(-1) dry weight, respectively. Both 137Cs specific activities and stable Cs concentrations in the mushrooms were higher than those in common agricultural plants. The 137Cs specific activities and stable Cs concentrations in the soils were 3.18-149 Bq kg(-1) dry weight and 0.618-2.18 mg kg(-1) dry weight, respectively. The appearance frequencies of filamentous actinomycetes and planktonic bacteria from the soils decreased according to increasing Cs contents in the medium. No relationship was observed between the appearance frequencies of those and the stable Cs concentrations in the soils. The filamentous actinomycetes from any soil sample could not grow in the presence of 25 mM Cs, although the planktonic bacteria from the soil samples could grow with up to 50 mM Cs in YM agar. In addition, the planktonic bacteria from approximately 70% of the soil samples could grow even in the presence of 100 mM Cs. Filamentous actinomycetes were more sensitive to Cs than planktonic bacteria. In in vitro experiments, Cs uptake by these strains of filamentous actinomycetes and planktonic bacteria was high in the presence of 5 mM CsCl and the strains accumulated Cs, the same as in mushrooms. Our results indicate that filamentous actinomycetes in the soils have higher sensitivity to Cs than planktonic bacteria, and several strains of filamentous actinomycetes have a high Cs accumulation in the presence of 5 mM Cs.  相似文献

In the future, it may become common practice in Swedish forestry to recycle wood-ash, a waste product of the combustion of bio-fuel. As a consequence of the Chernobyl radioactive fallout in 1986, large areas of central Sweden were contaminated. Application of recycled wood-ash, originating from contaminated areas, to a previously uncontaminated forest, risks an increase in the concentration of radioactive 137Cs. We measured 137Cs radioactivity in different parts of coniferous forests in seven field experiments. Measurements of radioactivity were made 5-8 years after an application of wood-ash equivalent to 3000 kg ha(-1). The sites, in a north-south transect across Sweden, have a background radioactivity ranging from 0 to 40 kBq m(-2), the higher levels are mainly a result of the Chernobyl fall-out. Depending on its origin, the radioactivity of the applied wood-ash ranged from 0.0 to 4.8 kBq kg(-1), corresponding to 0.0-1.44 kBq m(-2). In autumn 1999, samples were taken from the soil, field vegetation, needles and twigs and the levels of 137Cs determined. In addition, soil samples were analysed for extractable K. The highest 137Cs concentration was found in the soil. At six of the seven sites there were no statistically significant effects of wood-ash application on 137Cs activity. This was despite the fact that the wood-ash had, in one case, added the same amount of radioactivity as the background. However, at one site with intermediate 137Cs deposition (10-20 kBq m(-2)), there was a statistically significant decrease in 137Cs radioactivity in the soil, needles and twigs from the plots treated with wood-ash. The decrease in radioactivity was partly due to the fact that one of the main constituents of wood-ash is K, which is antagonistic to 137Cs. Based on our results, it appears that application of wood-ash containing 137Cs does not necessarily increase the 137Cs radioactivity in plants and soil. However, some of the observed effects could be a result of the low number of replicates used in this study.  相似文献

Mushrooms are known to be bioaccumulators of radionuclides, but little is known about their distribution within the fruiting bodies or the influence of the degree of maturity on uptake. We carried out a series of cultures of the species Pleurotus eryngii under controlled laboratory conditions to analyze these variables. The maximal uptake of 134Cs and 85Sr was found to occur in mature fruiting bodies, and with the growth of the mushroom the distribution of radionuclides within the fruiting bodies became inhomogeneous. In particular, there was an exponential increase in the percentage of the total activity of 134Cs, 85Sr, and 60Co in the cap+gills as the fruiting bodies matured, accompanied by a complementary decrease in the stem. Radiocaesium, potassium, calcium, (239+240)Pu, (234,238)U, (228,230,232)Th, and 226Ra were assayed in the cap, gills, and stem of fruiting bodies of Tricholoma equestre collected in a natural ecosystem and cultured P. eryngii. Potassium and radiocaesium were mainly located in the cap+gills, and 226Ra in the gills. There was a disequilibrium between (230,232)Th and 228Th in the different parts of the fungi, probably due to uptake of 228Ra and subsequent decay to 228Th. Finally, the distribution pattern of (239+240)Pu, (234,238)U, and (230,232)Th seemed to be species dependent.  相似文献

Amounts of 137Cs in residents of Central Southern England were smaller during 1974–76 than at any time during the previous 17 years, and 17 times lower than those recorded during 1964–65. A simple model has been developed, empirically relating 137Cs in rainfall during 1957–76 to the ensuing burdens in man, and the results suggest that a slowly‐declining reservoir of deposited material from the weapons tests of 1955–63 currently contributes as much dietary contamination as the low levels of recent fall out. 137Cs burdens are therefore unlikely to decline by more than a factor of 2–3 during the next decade, even in the absence of additional weapons tests. The radiation dose rate from the current (early 1977) average level of 137Cs in these subjects is however only one percent of that delivered by the body's natural 40K.  相似文献

The activity of environmental radionuclides ((7)Be, (210)Pb and (137)Cs) was monitored in nested catchments, inside the Seine River basin. Suspended matter data was collected at 8 different watersheds, ranging from order 1 to order 7, and ranging in size over 4 orders of magnitude. Suspended matter was analyzed for (210)Pb, (137)Cs and (7)Be, and used to calculate the flux of sediments out of each watershed. Monthly atmospheric flux data of (210)Pb and (7)Be was analyzed to assess the input flux of each into the watersheds, taking into account the rainfall during sampling periods. Taking advantage of the different half-lives of (7)Be (53 days) and (210)Pb (22 years), a two-box model was built for each of the catchments following a methodology previously developed by Dominik et al. [Dominik J, Burrus D, Vernet JP. Transport of the environmental radionuclides in alpine watershed. Earth Planet Sci Letters 1987; 84: 165-180.]. The model divides the watershed into a soil box and a rapid reservoir and provides insight into the removal rate of suspended matter from the surrounding watershed. The model enables the assessment of the surface area and the residence time of slow and rapid reservoirs to describe the fate of contaminants of atmospheric origin inside the river basin. The model was improved by considering the dissolved fraction in the total flux and adding the (137)Cs inventory as an additional constraint. The effects of these changes are discussed. Residence times in the soil box, characterized by low transport velocity, range between 4800 years at Melarchez (order 1) to about 30000 years at Andresy and Poses (order 7). They remain constant in each watershed over a large range of variation of atmospheric fluxes of (7)Be and (210)Pb during the whole study, but are sensitive to SM variations. The residence time in the rapid box, which includes the surface of the river and immediate surroundings, is less than one year, while its surface area is in the range 0.6% to 2.2% of the total catchment area. They are sensitive to (7)Be atmospheric flux variations. The two-box model was used to estimate the amount of the radionuclides in each reservoir. Inventories appear to be constant from one watershed to the next. The (7)Be inventory ratio in the rapid and slow boxes expresses the rate of particle-reactive atmospheric pollutants that will be rapidly delivered to the river.  相似文献

The concentrations of 137Cs, stable Cs and K were measured in soils and potatoes collected from 26 agricultural fields in Aomori, Japan and soil-to-potato transfer factors of 137Cs and stable Cs were determined. The concentrations of 137Cs derived from fallout deposition and stable Cs in soils were 1-37 Bq kg-1 and 1-11 mg kg-1, respectively. The isotopes, 137Cs and stable Cs, were homogeneously mixed in the rooting zone in the upper 20 cm of soil in agricultural fields. The concentrations of 137Cs and stable Cs in potatoes were 50-2000 mBq kg-1 dry wt. and 0.004-0.13 mg kg-1 dry wt., respectively. The soil-to-potato transfer factor of 137Cs was in the range of 0.0037-0.16, which was higher than that of stable Cs of 0.00052-0.080. The transfer factors of 137Cs and stable Cs were correlated and the geometric mean of 137Cs was 0.030, which was four times higher than that of stable Cs at 0.0075. This implied that artificially added 137Cs is more mobile and more easily absorbed by plants than stable Cs in the soil. The concentration of K in potatoes showed a relatively constant value, independent of that in the soil. The transfer factors of both 137Cs and stable Cs decreased with increasing K concentration in the soil, which was mainly supplied as fertilizers to the fields. This suggests that the transfer of both 137Cs and stable Cs from soil to potato was affected by the presence of K in the soil. However, the transfer factors of 137Cs and stable Cs were independent of the amount of organic materials in soils.  相似文献

Chernobyl 137Cs fallout data obtained during the period 1986-1996 from the most contaminated area in Russia were used within the IAEA BIOMASS programme to test the reliability of radiological assessment models. This model-testing scenario included information and data on countermeasures that were applied in the test area after the accident. This paper presents the predictions of the terrestrial foodchain model SPADE that was used in this model-testing exercise. SPADE predictions compared reasonably well with test data except for pigs and wild berries where differences were up to a factor of 50 and 200, respectively. Estimated intake of 137Cs and ingestion dose by adult men and women living in the test area compared favourably with the test data. Overall, SPADE proved to be capable of simulating agricultural countermeasures and their effectiveness. Modelling of countermeasures was found to be a complex process with large uncertainties regarding their 'real' implementation and effectiveness. The lessons learned from this exercise will be valuable in making future dose assessments/reconstructions involving countermeasures with improved results.  相似文献
