Here we describe a recently developed direct Monte Carlo program to study kinetic electron emission from SiO2 target. The program includes excitation of the target electrons (by projectile ions, recoiling target atoms and fast primary electrons), subsequent transport and escape of these electrons from the target surface. The program can be used to calculate the electron yields, distribution of electron excitation points in the target and other physical parameters of the emitted electrons. In order to demonstrate the capabilities of this program, we report a study on the kinetic electron emission from SiO2 induced by fast (1-10 keV) rare gas ions. The calculated kinetic electron yield for various ion energies and masses is in good agreement with the predictions of most frequently applied theoretical model. In addition, the effects of projectile energy, mass and impact angle on the depth distribution of electron excitation points and average escape depth of the outgoing electrons were investigated. It is important to mention that the existing experimental techniques are not capable to measure these parameters.  相似文献

The total secondary electron emission yields, γT, induced by impact of the fast ions Neq+ (q = 2-8) and Arq+ (q = 3-12) on Si and Neq+ (q = 2-8) on W targets have been measured. It was observed that for a given impact energy, γT increases with the charge of projectile ion. By plotting γT as a function of the total potential energy of the respective ion, true kinetic and potential electron yields have been obtained. Potential electron yield was proportional to the total potential energy of the projectile ion. However, decrease in potential electron yield with increasing kinetic energy of Neq+ impact on Si and W was observed. This decrease in potential electron yield with kinetic energy of the ion was more pronounced for the projectile ions having higher charge states. Moreover, kinetic electron yield to energy-loss ratio for various ion-target combinations was calculated and results were in good agreement with semi-empirical model for kinetic electron emission.  相似文献

The temperature dependences of the ion-induced electron emission yield γ of highly-oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) under high-fluence (1018-1019 ions/cm2) 30 keV Ar+ ion irradiation at ion incidence angles from θ = 0o (normal incidence) to 80o have been measured to trace both the structure and morphology changes in the basal oriented samples. The target temperature has been varied during continuous irradiation from T = −180 to 400 oC. The surface analysis has been performed by the RHEED and SEM techniques. The surface microgeometry was studied using laser goniophotometry (LGF). The dependences of γ(T) were found to be strongly non-monotonic and essentially different from the ones for Ar+ and N2+ ion irradiation of the polygranular graphites. A sharp peak at irradiation temperature Tp ≈ 150 oC was found. A strong influence of electron transport anisotropy has been observed, and ion-induced microgeometry is discussed.  相似文献

We report experimental work on secondary electron emission from both entrance (γb) and exit (γf) surfaces of thin carbon foils traversed by H+, H0 and H+2 projectiles (1.2 MeV/u). Secondary electron coefficients γb and γf, were measured simultaneously. The results are discussed in the framework of a semiempirical model for kinetic emission of target electrons from solid surfaces.  相似文献

The ionization probability of atoms sputtered from a clean polycrystalline metal surface was measured for different charge states of the projectile used to bombard the sample. More specifically, a polycrystalline indium surface was irradiated with Ar+ and Ar0 beams of energies between 5 and 15 keV, and In+ secondary ions and neutral In atoms emitted from the surface were detected under identical experimental conditions regarding the sampled emission angle and energy. The resulting energy integrated ionization probability of sputtered In atoms is consistently found to be smaller for neutral projectiles, the difference decreasing with decreasing impact energy. The observed trends agree with those measured for kinetic electron emission, indicating that secondary ion formation is at least partly governed by kinetic substrate excitation.  相似文献

We used the average of the Thomas-Fermi (TF) electron distribution instead of that of Hartree-Fock (HF) electron distribution as the screening length of an isolated atom. Based on the Firsov theory, we proposed a new Firsov formula of the electronic energy loss which has a simple form ΔEe(Eb) ∞ Se(E) exp(γb)/(1 + βb)6, where Se(E) is the electronic stopping cross section, b = p/a, p and a are the impact parameter and the screening length, respectively, and β and γ are the fitting parameters. Using the present screening lengths with the shell effect and the new Firsov formula, the depth distributions of channeling were simulated by the ACOCT code for 20 keV B+ ions impinging along the [1 1 0] channel direction of silicon (1 1 0) surface. The ACOCT depth profiles of channeling using the new Firsov (solid) local model for the AMLJ potential are in good agreement with the experimental ones.  相似文献

It has long been known that the stopping and ranges of atoms and clusters depends on the projectile-target atom mass ratio. Recently, Carroll et al. [S.J. Carroll, P.D. Nellist, R.E. Palmer, S. Hobday, R. Smith, Phys. Rev. Lett. 84 (2000) 2654] proposed that the stopping of clusters also depends on the cohesive energy of the target. We investigate this dependence using a series of molecular-dynamics simulations, in which we systematically change the target cohesive energy, while keeping all other parameters fixed. We focus on the specific case of Au402 cluster impact on van-der-Waals bonded targets. As target, we employ Lennard-Jones materials based on the parameters of Ar, but for which we vary the cohesive energy artificially up to a factor of 20. We show that for small impact energies, E0 ? 100 eV/atom, the range D depends on the target cohesive energy U, D ∝ Uβ. The exponent β increases with decreasing projectile energy and assumes values up to β = 0.25 for E0 = 10 eV/atom. For higher impact energies, the cluster range becomes independent of the target cohesive energy. These results have their origin in the so-called ‘clearing-the way’ effect of the heavy Au402 cluster; this effect is strongly reduced for E0 ? 100 eV/atom when projectile fragmentation sets in, and the fragments are stopped independently of each other. These results are relevant for studies of cluster stopping and ranges in soft matter.  相似文献

The present paper deals with the emission of atomic and molecular ions from elemental molybdenum surface under Cs+ bombardment to explore the MCs+ formation mechanism with changing Cs surface coverage. Integrated count of MoCs+ shows a monotonic increase with increasing primary ion energy (1-5 keV). Change in MoCs+ intensity is attributed to the variation of surface work function ? and cesium surface concentration cCs due to varying impact energies. Variation of cCs has been obtained from the expression, cCs ∝ 1/(1 + Y) where Y is the elemental sputtering yield estimated from TRIM calculations. Systematic study of the energy distributions of all species emerging from Mo target has been done to measure the changes in surface work function. Changing slopes of the leading parts of Cs+ energy distributions suggest a substantial depletion in surface work function ? with decreasing primary ion energies. Δ? shows a linear dependence on cCs. The maximum reduction in surface work function Δ?max = 0.69 eV corresponds to the highest value of cCs = 0.5. A phenomenological model, based on the linear dependence of ? on cCs, has been employed to explain the MoCs+ data.  相似文献

The formation of doubly excited states of He atoms during impact of He2+ ions with projectile energies of 60-1000 eV under near-grazing angles of incidence of 5°-20° on clean and adsorbate-covered Ni(1 1 0) surfaces is studied by means of Auger electron spectroscopy. Pronounced dependencies of electron spectra from autoionization of atoms in doubly excited 2s2, 2s2p and 2p2 configurations on the coverage of the target surface with adsorbates are observed. These are directly related to work function changes, which are studied for the controlled adsorption of oxygen. Changes of the electron spectra on the target temperature are found for adsorbate-covered surfaces only, which puts into question recent interpretations of similar electron spectra in terms of a high local electron spin polarization of Ni(1 1 0) by an alternative interpretation based on thermal desorption or dissolution into bulk of surface contaminations. The formation of doubly excited states is studied for the oxygen p(2 × l) and p(3 × l) superstructures on Ni(1 1 0) in order to provide well-defined experimental data for theoretical investigations.  相似文献

The survival of ions during grazing scattering of keV He+ ions from a clean Ni(1 1 0) surface is studied as function of target temperature. We observe ion fractions in the scattered beams of typically 10−3 which show a slight increase with temperature of the target surface. From computer simulations of projectile trajectories we attribute this enhancement for ion fractions to effects of thermal vibrations of lattice atoms on the survival of ions in their initial charge state. Based on concepts of Auger neutralization, we discuss the role of the spin polarization of target electrons on charge transfer. We do not find corresponding signatures in our data and conclude that in the present case of Ni(1 1 0) the spin polarization has to be small.  相似文献

We have investigated the scattering of K+ and Cs+ ions from a single crystal Ag(0 0 1) surface and from a Ag-Si(1 0 0) Schottky diode structure. For the K+ ions, incident energies of 25 eV to 1 keV were used to obtain energy-resolved spectra of scattered ions at θi = θf = 45°. These results are compared to the classical trajectory simulation safari and show features indicative of light atom-surface scattering where sequential binary collisions can describe the observed energy loss spectra. Energy-resolved spectra obtained for Cs+ ions at incident energies of 75 eV and 200 eV also show features consistent with binary collisions. However, for this heavy atom-surface scattering system, the dominant trajectory type involves at least two surface atoms, as large angular deflections are not classically allowed for any single scattering event. In addition, a significant deviation from the classical double-collision prediction is observed for incident energies around 100 eV, and molecular dynamics studies are proposed to investigate the role of collective lattice effects. Data are also presented for the scattering of K+ ions from a Schottky diode structure, which is a prototype device for the development of active targets to probe energy loss at a surface.  相似文献

Sputtering processes of protons from a polycrystalline Al surface interacting with Arq+ (q = 3-14) ions at a grazing incidence angle (∼0.5°) were investigated. The intensity of protons (IH) detected in coincidence with scattered Ar atoms was measured as a function of q. IH saturated at q ? 10, although it increased rapidly with q at 3 ? q ? 8. The angular distribution of protons with low kinetic energy (?2 eV) began to deviate from the cosine distribution and assumed a rather flat equidistribution as q increased. To analyze the sputtering processes of protons at the grazing incidence angle, a modified model of the “above-surface potential sputtering model” was proposed by considering image acceleration of projectile ions.  相似文献

We present measurements of secondary electron emission from Cu induced by low energy bombardment (1-5 keV) of noble gas (He+, Ne+ and Ar+) and Li+ ions. We identify different potential and kinetic mechanisms and find the presence of high energetic secondary electrons for a couple of ion-target combinations. In order to understand the presence of these fast electrons we need to consider the Fermi shuttle mechanism and the different ion neutralization efficiencies.  相似文献

Pure target ionization was investigated for 0.4-6.4 MeV Cq+(q = 1-4) + He and Oq+(q = 1-4) + He collisions. The double-to-single target ionization ratios R21 were measured using coincidence techniques. We compare our results with existing experimental results and find they are in good agreement. The ratio R21 is nearly independent of projectile charge state. The relation of R21 ∼ V is analyzed using the over barrier model (OBM) and ionization probability, which is described in our extended over barrier model. Our calculation agrees well with the experimental results.  相似文献

A thin germanium crystal has been irradiated at GANIL by Pb beams of 29 MeV/A (charge state Qin = 56 and 72) and of 5.6 MeV/A (Qin = 28). The induced ion emission from the sample entrance surface was studied, impact per impact, as a function of Qin, velocity vin and energy loss ΔE in the crystal. The Pb ions transmitted through the crystal were analyzed in charge (Qout) and energy using the SPEG spectrometer. The emitted ionized species were detected and analyzed in mass by a time-Of-flight multianode detector (LAG). Channeling was used to select peculiar ΔE values in Ge and hence peculiar Pb ion trajectories close to the emitting entrance surface. The experiment was performed in standard vacuum. No Ge emission was found. The dominating emitted species are H+ and hydrocarbon ions originating from the contamination layer on top of the crystal. The mean value 〈M〉 of the number of detected species per incoming Pb ion (multiplicity) varies as (Qin/vin)p, with p values in agreement with previous results. We have clearly observed an influence of the energy deposition ΔE in Ge on the emission from the top contamination layer. When selecting increasing values of ΔE, we observed a rather slow increase of 〈M〉. On the contrary, the probabilities of high multiplicity values, which are essentially connected to fragmentation after emission, strongly increase with ΔE.  相似文献

Carbon cluster ions (n = 1-5) and Cl+, Ti+, Ni+ ions were used to bombard polycarbonate (PC) films. By comparing the electronic energy loss and the number of chromophores at a fixed wavelength, we obtained the electronic energy loss Se of carbon cluster ions in PC.  相似文献

The temperature dependences of the ion-induced electron emission yield γ(T), the crystal structure, and the morphology of a surface layer of the one-dimensional carbon fiber composite KUP-VM (1D) under high-fluence (1018-1019 ion/cm2) irradiation with 30 keV ions at normal incidence both perpendicular and parallel to the fiber directions have been studied. The target temperature has been varied during continuous irradiation from T = −180 to 400 °C. The surface analysis has been performed by the RHEED, SEM and RBS techniques. The surface microgeometry was studied using laser goniophotometry (LGP). It has been found that ion irradiation results in a loss of anisotropy of the surface layer structure because of amorphization at room temperature or recrystallization at a temperature higher than the ion-induced annealing temperature. The fiber morphology anisotropy remains under ion irradiation.  相似文献

Measurements have been performed of scintillation light intensities emitted from various inorganic scintillators irradiated with low-energy beams of highly-charged ions from an electron beam ion source (EBIS) and an electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECRIS). Beams of xenon ions Xeq+ with various charge states between q = 2 and q = 18 have been used at energies between 5 and 17.5 keV per charge generated by the ECRIS. The intensity of the beam was typically varied between 1 and 100 nA. Beams of highly charged residual gas ions have been produced by the EBIS at 4.5 keV per charge and with low intensities down to 100 pA. The scintillator materials used are flat screens of P46 YAG and P43 phosphor. In all cases, scintillation light emitted from the screen surface was detected by a CCD camera. The scintillation light intensity has been found to depend linearly on the kinetic ion energy per time deposited into the scintillator, while up to q = 18 no significant contribution from the ions’ potential energy was found. We discuss the results on the background of a possible use as beam diagnostics, e.g. for the new HITRAP facility at GSI, Germany.  相似文献

Interference structures in the ejected electron spectra for 30 MeV O5,8+ + O2 are investigated. The measured electron yields were studied for electron energies from 5 to 400 eV and observation angles of 30°, 60°, 90°, 120° and 150° with respect to the incident beam direction. Experimental molecular cross-sections were normalized to theoretical molecular one-center cross-sections revealing oscillatory structures suggestive of secondary interferences as evidenced by the independence on the observation angle. An oscillation interval for 30 MeV O5,8+ + O2 of Δk ∼ 4 a.u. is found, a value two times larger than that previously observed for 3 MeV H+ + N2. No obvious evidence for primary Young-type interferences was seen.  相似文献

A 6 MeV Race track Microtron (an electron accelerator) based pulsed neutron source has been designed specifically for the elemental analysis of short lived activation products where the low neutron flux requirement is desirable. The bremsstrahlung radiation emitted by impinging 6 MeV electron on the eγ primary target, was made to fall on the γn secondary target to produce neutrons. The optimisation of bremsstrahlung and neutron producing target along with their spectra were estimated using FLUKA code. The measurement of neutron flux was carried out by activation of vanadium and the measured fluxes were 1.1878 × 105, 0.9403 × 105, 0.7428 × 105, 0.6274 × 105, 0.5659 × 105, 0.5210 × 105 n/cm2/s at 0°, 30°, 60°, 90°, 115°, 140° respectively. The results indicate that the neutron flux was found to be decreased as increase in the angle and in good agreement with the FLUKA simulation.  相似文献
