All-optical 1300-nm to 1550-nm wavelength conversion using cross-phase modulation in a semiconductor optical amplifier 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
All-optical 1300-nm to 1550-nm wavelength converters may be important components in lightwave networks which use both the 1300-nm and the 1550-nm low-loss transmission windows of silica optical fiber. We describe a new all-optical 1300-nm to 1550-nm wavelength converter, based on cross-phase modulation in a 1300-nm semiconductor optical amplifier. We demonstrate operation of the wavelength converter at 1.25 Gb/s, and present bit-error rate measurements. The wavelength converter demonstrated here potentially operates at high speed, with low input power and low polarization-sensitivity. 相似文献

A detailed experimental investigation of the regenerative properties of the four-wave mixing (FWM) for the conventional nonreturn-to-zero data format is reported. A key feature in the proposed scheme, and contrary to the conventional approach, is application of the ON-OFF keying modulation on the pump wave. Measurement of the static transfer functions of the FWM process in a semiconductor optical amplifier shows that certain operating regimes exist, mainly related to the power levels "one" and "zero" of the modulated pump, where a significant improvement of the extinction ratio (ER) can be achieved. This conclusion has been confirmed by dynamic measurements at 2.4 Gb/s, where up to 3-dB improvement in the ER has been observed. 相似文献

A wavelength converter is presented that is made out of a semiconductor optical amplifier and an optical bandpass filter. Error-free inverted wavelength conversion is demonstrated at a bitrate of 80 Gbit/s. This approach can be exploited at higher bitrates. A clear open eye indicating error-free wavelength conversion at 160 Gbit/s is also presented. This wavelength converter has a simple configuration and allows photonic integration. 相似文献

Widely tunable wavelength conversion has been demonstrated using broad-band orthogonal-pump four-wave mixing in a semiconductor optical amplifier placed at the intersection of two fiber ring lasers. The all-optical wavelength converter operates without using any external pump source. A 3-dB conversion-range over 40 nm is obtained. The measured power penalty is 1.5 dB for a 2.5-Gb/s converted signal at 10/sup -9/ bit error rate. 相似文献

In this paper, we examine the blocking performance of networks in which connections may be blocked due to either insufficient capacity or due to limitations in the transmission network. We use analytical expressions and network simulations to examine blocking in networks in which the quality of the received signal may be so poor that the connection is effectively blocked. In particular, we apply our analysis to networks which use wavelength converters based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in semiconductor optical amplifiers. This paper demonstrates a novel optical preamplifier using optical modulation of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) emitted from a saturated semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA). Requirements on optical alignments and antireflection coating for SOAs can be relaxed and the elimination of an optical filter gives us a large tolerance of an input light wavelength in the proposed optical preamplifier. A small-signal gain of a fabricated preamplifier was over 13.5 dB for an input power of below -20 dBm. An optical gain bandwidth was over 60 nm. We measured the small-signal response of the optically modulated ASE. The 3 dB bandwidths at SOA bias currents of 200, 300, and 400 mA were 5.8, 12.6, and 16.5 GHz, respectively. We also investigated improvements in receiver sensitivities with the proposed optical preamplifier. Our calculation shows a possibility of 10 dB improvement in receiver sensitivities by using the optical preamplifier at 10 Gb/s. The measured receiver sensitivity was -22.7 dBm at 10 Gb/s with the optical preamplifier, which is corresponding to an improvement of 2.5 dB in the receiver sensitivity. Further improvements of the receiver sensitivity can be expected by optimizing the structure of SOAs for saturating ASE. 相似文献

Signal-induced birefringence and dichroism in a tensile-strained bulk semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) are demonstrated in a counterpropagation scheme. The polarization azimuth rotation and the change of ellipticity angle of the probe light are presented on the Poincare/spl acute/ sphere and can be calculated by the Stokes parameters. All-optical wavelength conversion (inverted/noninverted and upconversion/downconversion) based on cross polarization modulation (XPolM) in SOAs are investigated. It is shown that a bit error rate (BER) of <10/sup -9/ can be achieved and an extinction ratio of > 9 dB can be obtained at a bit rate of 2.488 Gb/s with a 2/sup 31/-1 non-return-to-zero (NRZ) pseudorandom bit sequence (PRBS). Because of the larger birefringence effect induced by the pump light in the longer wavelength range, upconversion shows better performance than downconversion. Compared with the noninverted case, inverted wavelength conversion shows better performance due to the positive contribution from cross gain modulation (XGM), which takes place simultaneously with XPolM. 相似文献

Semiconductor optical amplifier and electroabsorption modulator monolithically integrated with dual-waveguide spot-size converters at the input and output ports is demonstrated by means of selective area growth, quantum-well intermixing, and asymmetric twin waveguide technologies. At the wavelength range of 1550/spl sim/1600 nm, lossless operation with extinction ratios of 25-dB dc and 11.8-dB radio frequency and more than 10-GHz 3-dB modulation bandwidth is successfully achieved. The output beam divergence angles of the device in the horizontal and vertical directions are as small as 7.3/spl deg//spl times/10.6/spl deg/, respectively, resulting in 3.0-dB coupling loss with cleaved single-mode optical fiber. 相似文献

We demonstrate all-optical wavelength shifting over 9 nm for two microwave subcarriers by using four-wave mixing in a semiconductor optical amplifier. In our experiment, the RF spectrum is relatively unaffected by wavelength shifting and the resultant system power penalty is /spl sim/0.5 dB. Such a transparent wavelength shifter may be a critical component in WDM networks supporting both subcarrier multiplexed (SCM) and high speed digital transmission. 相似文献

The large-signal theory of frequency converters based on cross-gain and cross-phase modulations in a semiconductor optical amplifier is developed, for the case in which pump and probe are injected from the same facet (co-propagating case). Simple expressions for the bandwidth of cross-gain modulation are derived for single and cascaded SOA's, and large-signal simulations are carried out for cascaded SOA's, pointing out some important system issues. A hybrid wavelength-division multiplexed/subcarrier multiplexed passive optical network (WDM/SCM-PON) which shares the same wavelength both up-link and down-link is presented by using a reflective semiconductor optical amplifier (RSOA) as a modulator. The wavelength conversion occurs inside a high-reflection/antireflection coated semiconductor optical amplifier pigtailed with a fiber Bragg grating. We investigate the effect of input pump and signal powers on the noise performance and intersymbol interference (ISI) in a frequency-converter based on four-wave mixing (FWM) in a semiconductor optical amplifier. We demonstrate that there is an input pump power at which the noise figure of the frequency converter is a minimum, and a corresponding input signal power for which the output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is a maximum. We report bit-error-rate measurements which show that there is a trade-off between maximizing the output SNR, and minimizing intersymbol interference in the SOA. Consequently, the power penalty incurred in the frequency conversion can be minimized by careful selection of the input signal power. We show that power penalties of less than 1 dB are achievable. 相似文献
