Repetitive heating and cooling cycles inevitably cause crack damage of hot gas components of gas turbine engines, such as blades and vanes. In this study the self-healing capacity is investigated of mullite + ytterbium monosilicate (Yb2SiO5) as EBC material with Ti2AlC MAX phase particles embedded as a crack-healing agent. The effect of Ti2AlC in the EBC was compared with the self-healing ability of the mullite + Yb2SiO5 material. After introducing cracks by Vickers indentation on the surface of each sample, crack healing was realized by controlling the temperature and time during the post-heat-treatment process. For the mullite + Yb2SiO5 composite with Ti2AlC particles, crack healing occurred at 1000 °C, while in the case of the mullite + Yb2SiO5 composite without Ti2AlC, a sustained temperature of 1300 °C or higher was required. Compared with the healing of the mullite + Yb2SiO5 composite by the formation of a eutectic phase, the addition of Ti2AlC promoted healing via the oxidation of Ti and Al. Notably, the surface formation of a ternary oxide of Ti–Yb–O was confirmed, which completely covered the damage area. Consequently, the addition of a Ti2AlC MAX phase to the EBC composite resulted in a complete strength recovery, while the mullite + Yb2SiO5 composite without Ti2AlC showed a strength recovery of about 80%. Furthermore, by analyzing the indentation load–displacement curve to indicate the role of Ti2AlC, the addition of Ti2AlC improved both the hardness and stiffness of the composite.  相似文献

In situ microcantilever bending tests were carried out to evaluate the healing efficiency of pre-notched Ti2AlC ceramic after annealing at 1200 °C for 1.5 h. Microcantilevers of different orientations were fabricated with focused ion beam method at different locations, i.e. in a singular Ti2AlC grain, at a grain boundary or at the Ti2AlC–Al2O3 interface after healing. Ti2AlC microcantilever shows an anisotropic bending strength (ranging between 9.6 GPa and 4.6 GPa depending on the precise crystallographic orientations) that is closely related to the different atomic bonds in the layered structure. After healing, the Ti2AlC–Al2O3 microcantilevers exhibit almost the same strength of about 5.2 GPa, i.e. slightly higher than the cleavage strength (4.6 GPa) of the initial Ti2AlC microcantilevers. It suggests that the orientation of the matrix grain has no significant influence on the strength of healed microcantilevers. Furthermore, it turns out that the strength of the microcantilever with a healed grain boundary is at least twice the strength of the initial Ti2AlC cantilever with a grain boundary. It is concluded that the oxidation dominated self-healing mechanism of Ti2AlC ceramics can result in a perfect recovery of mechanical performance. The paper shows that the in situ microcantilever bending test provides a quantitative method for the evaluation of the strength of self-healing ceramics.  相似文献

The oxidation induced crack healing behavior of pre-cracked Nb2AlC particle loaded ZrO2-matrix composites was explored by annealing in air at 1200?°C for short periods of 10 and 20?min. Composites loaded with 0, 6.5, 13, and 19.5?vol% Nb2AlC powder dispersed in 3Y-TZP matrix powder were manufactured by spark plasma sintering (SPS) at 1300?°C. Semi-elliptical artificial surface cracks with a length exceeding 220?µm were produced by Vickers indentation. The modulus of rupture of virgin, indented and annealed samples was measured in three-point bending mode. Compared to single phase 3Y-TZP strength recovery of the Nb2AlC loaded composite upon annealing at 1200?°C in air is accelerated and reaches >?60% of the initial strength after a short healing period of 10?min only. A semi-empirical oxidation cohesive zone healing model was derived which describes the crack microstructure evolution as a combined effect of 3Y-TZP-matrix healing superimposed by Nb2AlC particle oxidation induced healing.  相似文献

The processing and characterization of laminates based on Ti2AlC MAX phase, as matrix, and triaxial alumina braids, as reinforcing phase, are presented. Ti2AlC powders with a mean particle size below 1 µm are synthesized, while commercial 3M Nextel 610 alumina fibers are braided in a three-stage process consisting of spooling, braiding with an angle of 0° and ±60° and the separation to single-layer fabric. The laminates are processed by layer-by-layer stacking, where 3 two-dimensional alumina braids are interleaved between Ti2AlC layers, followed by full densification using a Field-Assisted Sintering Technology/Spark Plasma Sintering. The multifunctional response of the laminates, as well as for the monolithic Ti2AlC, is evaluated, in particular, the thermal and electrical conductivity, the oxidation resistance, and the mechanical response. The laminates exhibit an anisotropic thermal and electrical behavior, and an excellent oxidation resistance at 1200℃ in air for a week. A relatively lower characteristic biaxial strength and Weibull modulus (i.e., σ0 = 590 MPa and m = 9) for the laminate compared to the high values measured in the monolithic Ti2AlC (i.e., σ0 = 790 MPa and m = 29) indicates the need but also the potential of optimizing MAX-phase layered structures for multifunctional performance.  相似文献

High pure Ti2Al(1?x)SnxC (x = 0‐1) powders were synthesized using Ti, Al, Sn, and TiC powders as raw materials by pressureless sintering method. The influence of sintering temperature and raw material ratio on the purity of Ti2AlC and Ti2Al0.8Sn0.2C powders were investigated. The results show that pure Ti2AlC and Ti2Al0.8Sn0.2C powders were obtained from the mixed raw materials ratio of Ti:1.1Al:0.9TiC and Ti:0.9Al:0.2Sn:0.9TiC at 1450°C, respectively. Subsequently, fully dense Ti2AlC and Ti2Al0.8Sn0.2C bulks were prepared using mechanically alloying and hot pressed sintering method. The Vickers hardness of Ti2AlC and Ti2Al0.8Sn0.2C approaches approximately about 6 GPa and 4 GPa, the flexural strength was measured to be 650 ± 36 MPa and 521 ± 33 MPa, respectively. Microstructural analysis reveals that grain delamination, kink bands, and crack deflection occurred around the indentation area and at the fracture surface.  相似文献

A comprehensive reaction mechanism of Ti3AlC2 MAX-phase formation from its elemental powders while spark plasma sintering has been proposed. Microstructural evaluation revealed that Al-rich TiAl3 intermetallic forms at around 660 °C once Al melts. Gradual transition from TiAl3 to Ti-rich TiAl and Ti3Al intermetallic phases occurs between 700 °C and 1200 °C through formation of layered structure due to diffusion of Al from periphery toward the centre of Ti particles. Formation of TiC and Ti3AlC transient carbide phases were observed to occur through two different reactions beyond 1000 °C. Initially, TiC forms due to interaction of Ti and C, which further reacts with TiAl and Ti and gives rise to Ti3AlC. Later, Ti3AlC also forms due to diffusion of C into Ti3Al above 1200 °C. Above 1300 °C, Ti3AlC phase decomposes into Ti2AlC MAX-phase and TiC in presence of unreacted C. Finally, Ti2AlC and TiC reacts together to from Ti3AlC2 MAX-phase above 1350 °C and completes at 1500 °C.  相似文献

Submicron Ti2AlC MAX phase powder was synthesized by molten salt shielded synthesis (MS3) using a Ti:Al:C molar ratio of 2:1:0.9 at a process temperature of 1000°C for 5  hours. The synthesized powder presented a mean particle size of ~0.9 µm and a purity of 91 wt. % Ti2AlC, containing 6 wt. % Ti3AlC2. The Ti2AlC powder was sintered by pressureless sintering, achieving a maximal relative density of 90%, hence field-assisted sintering technology/spark plasma sintering was used to enhance densification. The fine-grained microstructure was preserved, and phase purity of Ti2AlC was unaltered in the latter case, with a relative density of 98.5%. Oxidation was performed at 1200°C for 50 hours in static air of dense monolithic Ti2AlC with different surface finish, (polished, ground and sandblasted) which resulted in the formation of an approx. 8 µm thin aluminum oxide (Al2O3) layer decorated with titanium dioxide (rutile, TiO2) colonies. Surface quality had no influence on Al2O3 scale thickness, but the amount and size of TiO2 crystals increased with surface roughness. A phenomenon of rumpling of the thermally grown oxide (TGO) was observed and a model to estimate the extent of deformation is proposed.  相似文献

Ti2AlCx ceramic was produced by reactive hot pressing (RHP) of Ti:Al:C powder mixtures with a molar ratio of 2:1:1–.5 at 10–20 MPa, 1200–1300°C for 60 min. X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed the Ti2AlC with TiC, Ti3Al as minor phases in samples produced at 10–20 MPa, 1200°C. The samples RHPed at 10 MPa, 1300°C exhibited ≥95 vol.% Ti2AlC with TiC as a minor phase. The density of samples increased from 3.69 to 4.04 g/cm3 at 10 MPa, 1200°C, whereas an increase of pressure to 20 MPa resulted from 3.84 to 4.07 g/cm3 (2:1:1 to 2:1:.5). The samples made at 10 MPa, 1300°C exhibited a density from 3.95 to 4.07 g/cm3. Reaction and densification were studied for 2Ti–Al–.67C composition at 10 MPa, 700–1300°C for 5 min showed the formation of Ti–Al intermetallic and TiC phases up to 900°C with Ti, Al, and carbon. The appearance of the Ti2AlC phase was ≥1000°C; further, as the temperature increased, Ti2AlC peak intensity was raised, and other phase intensities were reduced. The sample made at 700°C showed a density of 2.87 g/cm3, whereas at 1300°C it exhibited 3.98 g/cm3; further, soaking for 60 min resulted in a density of 4.07 g/cm3. Microhardness and flexural strength of Ti2AlC0.8 sample were 5.81 ± .21 GPa and 445 ± 35 MPa.  相似文献

Upon annealing cold-pressed Ti2AlC, ?325 mesh powders, at 1500 °C for 8 h in argon, the resulting partially sintered sample contained 43(±2) wt.% of the layered ternary carbide Ti5Al2C3. Herein, the X-ray powder diffraction pattern of Ti5Al2C3 is reported for the first time and its structure and stoichiometry are confirmed through high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. This phase has a trigonal structure (space group P3m1) with a unit cell consisting of 3 formula units and cell parameters of a = 3.064 Å, c = 48.23 Å. The lattice parameters determined through first principles calculations agree reasonably well with the experimentally determined values. At 147.1 GPa, the calculated bulk modulus falls between the bulk moduli of Ti2AlC and Ti3AlC2. The transformation from Ti2AlC to Ti5Al2C3 is topotactic.  相似文献

In this research, NiAl particles modified Al2O3 composites with toughening and crack‐healing performances were prepared by spark plasma sintering. The toughening effects as a function of the NiAl particle size and content were systematically investigated. The fracture toughness was increased by 80% compared with pure alumina after incorporation of 1 μm NiAl particles at 15 wt%. A self‐healing process of damaged composites induced by indentation was found to occur, mediated by oxidation of NiAl at elevated temperatures with the size of the NiAl particles. Atomic force microscopy was adopted to characterize the crack‐healing performance and to explore the healing mechanism under each healing condition. The best crack‐healing efficiency of 99.2% was found in the composite containing 1 μm NiAl at 15 wt% that was annealed at 1300°C for 5 h. In addition, the fracture toughness of the composite was further enhanced by 40% after the crack‐healing process. These multifunctional ceramic composites may have promising and broad application in areas such as thermal barrier coatings, fuel cell membranes, etc.  相似文献

Two series of raw materials were adopted to form TiAl/Ti2AlC composites: Ti/Al/TiC and Ti/Al/C. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) of starting powers and X-ray diffraction (XRD) of samples sintered at different temperatures from 600 °C to 1300 °C by hot pressing were utilized to analyze the phase transformation and the mechanism of synthesis. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) was utilized to investigate the morphology characteristics of the products. The experimental results showed that Ti reacted with Al to form TiAl intermetallics below 900 °C; and above 900 °C, TiAl reacted with TiC to produce dense TiAl/Ti2AlC composites. The products sintered at 1200 °C had fine crystals and dense fibres, and the distribution of Ti2AlC particles in TiAl matrix was homogeneous.  相似文献

The joining of titanium aluminum carbides has been successfully performed at high temperature and low oxygen partial pressure. The mechanism of the bonding is attributed to the preferential oxidation of Al atoms in the titanium aluminum carbides at low oxygen partial pressure, which leads to the formation of an Al2O3 layer through the joint interface. The specimens joined at 1400 °C exhibit a high flexural strength of 315 ± 19.1 MPa for Ti2AlC and 332 ± 2.83 MPa for Ti3AlC2, which is about 95% and 88% of the substrates, respectively, and the high flexural strength can be retained up to 1000 °C. The high mechanical performance of the joints is attributed to the similar density and thermal expansion coefficient values of Al2O3 to those of the Ti2AlC and Ti3AlC2 substrates. It indicates that bonding via preferential oxidation at low oxygen partial pressure is a practical and efficient method for Ti2AlC and Ti3AlC2.  相似文献

The thermal shock behavior of Ti2AlC synthesized by means of self‐propagating high‐temperature combustion synthesis with pseudo hot isostatic pressing is investigated, with a focus on the effect of the quenching temperature and quenching times. In general, Ti2AlC exhibits a better thermal shock resistance than typical brittle ceramics like Al2O3. Although the flexural strength decreases quickly in the temperature range of 300°C‐500°C, no discontinuous decrease in the retained strength is observed in Ti2AlC which, as with other MAX phases, differs from the behavior of typical brittle ceramics. Overall, the initial strength (grain size) plays a determining role in the thermal shock behavior of Ti2AlC and other MAX phases. On increasing quench times to 5 cycles, the retained flexural strength decreases further, however with a lower rate of decrease compared with the first quench. Quenching at 300°C and above, voids after the pullout of grains and cracks are present, which however are absent in the un‐quenched samples, indicating the weakening of bonding among grains and the induced damage around the grain boundary during the thermal shock.  相似文献

Reactive sintering of 8Ti:Al4C3:C powder mixtures to form the ternary carbide Ti2AlC is studied in the temperature range 570–1400 °C. After sintering at 1400 °C for 1 h, only the MAX phase Ti2AlC and some TiC are produced. A series of intermediate phases, such as TiC, Ti3Al, Ti3AlC are detected during the reactive sintering process. From X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) characterizations, a reaction path is proposed for the intermediate phases and Ti2AlC formation. Results show that reaction kinetics may play an important role in the understanding of the reaction mechanisms.  相似文献

Mechanically activated hot-pressing technology was used to synthesize a fine-crystalline Cr2AlC ceramic at relatively low temperatures. A mixture of Cr, Al and C powders with a molar ratio of 2:1.2:1 was mechanically alloyed for 3 h, and then subjected to hot pressing at 30 MPa and different temperatures for 1 h in Ar atmosphere. The results show that a dense Cr2AlC ceramic with a grain size of about 2 μm can be synthesized at a relatively low temperature of 1100 °C. The synthesized fine-grained Cr2AlC has a high density of 99%, which is higher than the 95% density for the coarse-grained Cr2AlC (grain size of about 35 μm) as synthesized by hot pressing unmilled Cr, Al and C. The flexural strength, fracture toughness and Vickers hardness of the fine-grained Cr2AlC were determined and compared with the values for the coarse-grained Cr2AlC.  相似文献

The oxidation-induced crack healing of an Al2O3 composite loaded with various volume fractions of Ti2Al0.5Sn0.5C repair filler particles was investigated by annealing in air at a relatively low temperature of 700°C. After annealing a composite with 20 vol.% repair fillers (with a particle size of ~5.6 µm) for 48 hours, artificial indentation cracks prepared on the surface, as well as pores near the surface, were completely healed by filling with condensed oxidation products. Additionally, minor fraction of metallic Sn was detected. A complementary study by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy revealed that nano-sized oxidation products (SnO2, TiO2, and α-Al2O3 phase) were formed as major crack-filling species. After healing, the strength recovery of the Al2O3 composites was significantly improved in the composites loaded with more than 10 vol.% repair fillers and achieved 107% at 700 for 48 hours.  相似文献

In this study, Ti2AlC foams were fabricated by direct foaming and gel‐casting using agarose as gelling agent. Slurry viscosity, determined by the agarose content (at a fixed solids loading), as well as surfactant concentration and foaming time were the key parameters employed for controlling the foaming yield, and hence the foam porosity after sintering process. Fabricated foams having total porosity in the 62.5‐84.4 vol% range were systematically characterized to determine their pore size and morphology. The effect of the foam porosity on the room‐temperature compression strength and elastic modulus was also determined. Depending on the amount of porosity, the compression strength and Young's modulus were found to be in the range of 9‐91 MPa and 7‐52 GPa, respectively. Permeability to air flow at temperatures up to 700°C was investigated. Darcian (k1) and non‐Darcian (k2) permeability coefficients displayed values in the range 0.30‐93.44 × 10?11 m2 and 0.39‐345.54 × 10?7 m, respectively. The amount of porosity is therefore a very useful microstructural parameter for tuning the mechanical and fluid dynamic properties of Ti2AlC foams.  相似文献

This work reports the oxidation and crack healing behavior of a fine‐grained (~2 μm) Cr2AlC MAX phase ceramic. The oxidation behavior was investigated in the temperature range 900°C–1200°C for times up to 100 h. The material showed a good oxidation resistance, owing to the formation of a dense and thin α‐Al2O3 layer. The microstructure, composition and thickness of the oxide scale were characterized. Its oxidative crack healing behavior as a function of temperature, healing time, and initial crack size was studied systematically. The material showed excellent healing behavior. The main crack healing mechanism is the filling of the crack by oxides well adhering to the crack faces. The crack geometry before and after healing was characterized by X‐ray tomography. Three‐point bend tests showed the dependence of strength recovery at 1100°C as a function of initial crack length and healing time.  相似文献

Cr2AlC foams have been processed for the first time containing low (35 vol%), intermediate (53 vol%), and high (75 vol%) content of porosity and three ranges of pore size, 90‐180 μm, 180‐250 μm, and 250‐400 μm. Sacrificial template technique was used as the processing method, utilizing NH4HCO3 as a temporary pore former. Cr2AlC foams exhibited negligible oxidation up to 800°C and excellent response up to 1300°C due to the in‐situ formation of an outer thin continuous protective layer of α‐Al2O3. The in‐situ α‐Al2O3 protective layer covered seamlessly all the external surface of the pores, even when they present sharp angles and tight corners, reducing significantly the further oxidation of the foams. The compressive strength of the foams was 73 and 13 MPa for 53 vol% and 75 vol% porosity, respectively, which increased up to 128 and 24 MPa after their oxidation at 1200°C for 1 hour. The increase in the compressive strength after the oxidation was caused by the switch from inter‐ to transgranular fracture mode. According to the excellent high‐temperature response, heat exchangers and catalyst supports are the potential application of these foams.  相似文献

Herein, a highly crystalline Ti2AlC was synthesized via the improved molten salt synthesis method called molten salt shielded synthesis. To achieve this goal, the mixture of Ti, Al, and graphite and KCl–NaCl eutectic composition salt was heated at 1000, 1050, and 1100 °C for 0.5, 1, and 1.5 h. The X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns showed that the optimum condition for obtaining the more crystalline Ti2AlC was achieved at 1100 °C for 1.5 h. Such phase identification, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images, proved that applying a protective carbon layer on the surface of salt led to inhibiting the diffusion of oxygen into the surface of the green pellet. As a result, the crystallinity of Ti2AlC improved, while the content of undesirable compounds such as Al2O3 and TixOy decreased drastically. In order to shed light on the Ti2AlC synthesis mechanism, differential thermal analysis (DTA) was employed. The DTA curve revealed that the Ti2AlC formation completed in three levels. First, the partial dissolution of Ti in KCl–NaCl salt followed by a reaction with liquid Al resulted in the TiAl formation. Next, Ti(II) reacted in-situ on the surface of graphite that resulted in the non-stoichiometric TiC (TiC1-x) formation, and, at last in a reaction between TiAl and TiC1-x, Ti2AlC phase formation took place at 940 °C.  相似文献
