Chimpanzees and capuchins demonstrate greater varieties and higher rates of tool-use when compared to other non-human primates. Although capuchins have been studied extensively in captivity, data on their tool-using behavior under free-ranging conditions are limited. This is the first long-term field research to systematically study complex object manipulation in capuchins. The aims of this research are 1) to examine the types, rates, and contexts of tool- and object-use in free-ranging capuchins and 2) to determine if free-ranging capuchins' object manipulation behavior is comparable to the behavior exhibited by captive individuals. Data on 3 troops of white-faced capuchins (Cebus capucinus) were collected from February 1995 to January 1996 at Palo Verde, Costa Rica. Data were collected using focal animal and ad libitum sampling techniques. Any observed incident of tool-use and object-use was recorded. No tool-use was observed during the 11-month study. Object-use (pound, rub, and fulcrum-use) occurred at a rate of 0.19/hr and made up less than 1% of the monkeys' time (there were no differences among the age/sex classes). The results indicate that free-ranging capuchins do not exhibit the range of tool-using behavior demonstrated by their captive counterparts. This may be the result of differential motivational responses to objects, arboreal lifestyle, absence of adequate tool material, and/or absence of food resources that require extraction involving tool-use.  相似文献

Neurons of the song motor control nucleus robustus archistriatalis (RA) exhibited far weaker auditory responses in awake than in anesthetized zebra finches. Remarkably, sleep induced complex patterns of bursts in ongoing activity and uncovered vigorous auditory responses of RA neurons. Local injections of norepinephrine suggested that the changes in response strength occur through neuromodulatory control of the sensorimotor nucleus HVc, which projects to RA. Thus, motor access to auditory feedback, which zebra finches require for song learning and maintenance, may be regulated through neuromodulation. During sleep, the descending motor system may gain access to sensorimotor song memories represented as bursting patterns of activity.  相似文献

The functional anatomy of reaching and grasping simple objects was determined in nine healthy subjects with positron emission tomography imaging of regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF). In a prehension (grasping) task, subjects reached and grasped illuminated cylindrical objects with their right hand. In a pointing task, subjects reached and pointed over the same targets. In a control condition subjects looked at the targets. Both movement tasks increased activity in a distributed set of cortical and subcortical sites: contralateral motor, premotor, ventral supplementary motor area (SMA), cingulate, superior parietal, and dorsal occipital cortex. Cortical areas including cuneate and dorsal occipital cortex were more extensively activated than ventral occipital or temporal pathways. The left parietal operculum (putative SII) was recruited during grasping but not pointing. Blood flow changes were individually localized with respect to local cortical anatomy using sulcal landmarks. Consistent anatomic landmarks from MRI scans could be identified to locate sensorimotor, ventral SMA, and SII blood flow increases. The time required to complete individual movements and the amount of movement made during imaging correlated positively with the magnitude of rCBF increases during grasping in the contralateral inferior sensorimotor, cingulate, and ipsilateral inferior temporal cortex, and bilateral anterior cerebellum. Notes that when people lift objects of different size but equal weight, they initially employ too much force for the large object and too little force for the small object. However, over repeated lifts of the two objects, they learn to suppress the size–weight association used to estimate force requirements and appropriately scale their lifting forces to the true and equal weights of the objects. Thus, sensorimotor memory from previous lifts comes to dominate visual size information in terms of force prediction. Here the authors ask whether this sensorimotor memory is transient, preserved only long enough to perform the task, or more stable. After completing an initial lift series in which they lifted equally weighted large and small objects in alternation, 24 18–28 yr olds then repeated the lift series after delays of 15 min or 24 hrs. In both cases, participants retained information about the weights of the objects and used this information to predict the appropriate fingertip forces. This preserved sensorimotor memory suggests that participants acquired internal models of the size–weight stimuli that could be used for later prediction. Observed 18 firstborn toddlers (aged 12–15 mo) and their mothers in their homes on 2 occasions (1 wk apart) for 45 min on each day. Childrearing practices were assessed through interviews and naturalistic observations; impulse control, defined as the nonmanipulation of breakable or dangerous objects, was assessed by describing the objects that infants manipulated. Findings reveal that mothers made numerous demands on their infants for impulse control and enforced them promptly and consistently. Mothers who relied on physical punishment had infants who were more likely to ignore maternal prohibitions, to manipulate breakable objects, and to show low levels of nonverbal competence 7 mo later. Physically punishing mothers made the fewest objects available in their homes for infant manipulation. Implications of these findings for the development of early impulse control and cognitive functioning are considered. Results show that individual differences in impulse control during this time period are related to individual differences in disciplinary style, which are related to characteristics of the physical environment, compliance to maternal demands, and infant performance on standardized intelligence tests. To evaluate the normal development of functional hand motor skill, the kinematics of prehension movements were analyzed in 54 healthy children (age 4-12 years). The subjects repeatedly reached out for cylindrical target objects and grasped them with a precision grip of their dominant hand. The trajectory of the reaching hand and the finger aperture were monitored by optoelectronic motion analysis. To obtain comparable conditions for the different age groups, the experimental setup was scaled according to the individual body proportions of each subject. Within the investigated age range, neither the movement duration nor the normalized (according to body proportions) peak spatial velocity of the reaching hand changed significantly. However, the hand trajectory straightened and the coordination between hand transport and grip formation improved, resulting in smooth and stereotyped kinematic profiles at the age of 12 years. The younger children opened their grip relatively wider than the older ones, thus grasping with a higher safety margin. The dependence on visual control of the movement declined during motor development. Only the oldest children were able to scale the grip aperture adequately, according to various sizes of the target objects, when visual control of the movement was lacking. The results suggest that the development of prehensile skills during childhood lasts until the end of the first decade of life. This functional maturation is discussed in relation to the development of neuronal pathways.  相似文献

The early development of exploratory behavior was studied. One study documents changes in free exploration of infants aged from 2 to 5 months. Another compares 3- and 4–5 month-olds when manipulating and exploring an object in the light or in the dark (no visual control over exploration). The third study compares multimodal exploration in 3- and 4-month-olds when presented with two different objects varying in multiple properties. Results show that significant changes occur between 2 and 5 months, relative to spontaneous multimodal exploration of a novel object. Object exploration becomes increasingly multimodal. Bimanual coordination is first linked to the oral system, later reorganized in reference to vision when fingering emerges by 4 months. Manipulation in 3-month-olds is shown to be object-dependent. The 12-mo effects of exercise training on psychological outcomes in adults (aged 50–65 yrs) were evaluated. Ss (N?=?357) were randomly assigned to assessment-only control or to higher intensity group, higher intensity home, or lower intensity home exercise training. Exercisers showed reductions in perceived stress and anxiety in relation to controls. Reductions in stress were particularly notable in smokers. Regardless of program assignment, greater exercise participation was significantly related to less anxiety and fewer depressive symptoms, independent of changes in fitness or body weight. It is concluded that neither a group format nor vigorous activity was essential in attaining psychological benefits from exercise training in healthy adults. We used an interference paradigm in order to study integration between haptic and visual information in motor control and in perceptual analysis. Subjects either reached and grasped a visually presented sphere or matched its size with their left hand while manipulating with their right hand another sphere whose size could be smaller or greater. In four experiments haptic analysis of the manipulated sphere could be either automatically incorporated with or explicitly dissociated from visual analysis. In a fifth experiment reaching-grasping and matching were executed with the right hand, whereas manipulation was executed with the left hand. Manipulation with the right hand influenced finger shaping during grasping with the left hand when the sizes of the two objects were different. Interference was observed mainly in those experiments in which haptic analysis could be automatically integrated with visual analysis. In the matching task, no effect was observed. Finally, manipulation with the left hand did not produce any interference effect on reaching-grasping and matching executed by the right hand. The results of the present study suggest that somesthetic information is integrated with visual information only in sensorimotor transformations. In addition, they support the notion that the left hemisphere together with the right hemisphere is involved in the control of left hand reaching-grasping movements.  相似文献

In the last two decades, it became largely accepted that monkeys show little, if any, copying fidelity. However, some recent studies have begun to challenge this notion. To explore reasons for such contrary findings, we designed a foraging apparatus so that in each of two experiments with capuchin monkeys (Cebus apella), a model would demonstrate one of two alternative methods to obtain food. The apparatus had a V-shaped track on which a panel could be slid up left or right from the center to reveal food. In Experiment 1, food was located in a cup directly behind the center panel. In Experiment 2, sliding the panel left or right revealed food either in left or right ends of the V-track. Since this sliding movement led directly to one food location exclusive of the other, we predicted capuchins would show greater copying fidelity in this second Experiment. Instead, subjects were significantly more faithful to the model’s method in Experiment 1, which provided strong evidence of capuchins copying what they had observed. We suggest that the contrasting results of Experiment 1 may have occurred because capuchins prioritize exploratory behavior when alternative foraging locations are accessible. Capuchin monkeys (Cebus olivaceus) exhibit extensive intragroup variability in foraging and diet. To consider how age, sex, and individual identity contribute to this variability, the authors examined foraging and diet in 18 wedge-capped capuchin monkeys in 1 social group in the wild. Age–sex classes did not differ in the time spent ingesting food, the reliance on plant foods, the foraging actions used or substrates exploited, or in the efficiency of exploiting animal foods. They did differ, however, in the time spent finding food, time devoted to animal foods and to vigorous foraging, and the efficiency of foraging. The sexes differed more than age groups. Individual differences within age–sex class were less extensive than expected and were more evident in juveniles than adults. Within-group variability in foraging reflected catholic selection and equivalent treatment of substrates by all individuals, rather than individual specializations. How do infants learn to perceive the backs of objects that they see only from a limited viewpoint? Infants’ 3-dimensional object completion abilities emerge in conjunction with developing motor skills—independent sitting and visual–manual exploration. Infants at 4.5 to 7.5 months of age (n = 28) were habituated to a limited-view object and tested with volumetrically complete and incomplete (hollow) versions of the same object. Parents reported infants’ sitting experience, and infants’ visual–manual exploration of objects was observed in a structured play session. Infants’ self-sitting experience and visual–manual exploratory skills predicted looking at the novel, incomplete object on the habituation task. Further analyses revealed that self-sitting facilitated infants’ visual inspection of objects while they manipulated them. The results are framed within a developmental systems approach, wherein infants’ sitting skill, multimodal object exploration, and object knowledge are linked in developmental time. The cognitive advantage of imagined spatial transformations of the human body over that of more unfamiliar objects (e.g., Shepard-Metzler [S-M] cubes) is an issue for validating motor theories of visual perception. In 6 experiments, the authors show that providing S-M cubes with body characteristics (e.g., by adding a head to S-M cubes to evoke a posture) facilitates the mapping of the cognitive coordinate system of one's body onto the abstract shape. In turn, this spatial embodiment improves object shape matching. Thanks to the increased cohesiveness of human posture in people's body schema, imagined transformations of the body operate in a less piecemeal fashion as compared with objects (S-M cubes or swing-arm desk lamps) under a similar spatial configuration, provided that the pose can be embodied. If the pose cannot be emulated (covert imitation) by the sensorimotor system, the facilitation due to motoric embodiment will also be disrupted. The purpose of the study was to investigate what kind of factors determine the degree of difficulty for chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) when they imitate actions. Five adult chimpanzees were instructed to perform 48 arbitrary manipulatory actions consisting of different bodily motor patterns and object directionality. Results showed that actions in which an object is directed toward another external location (another object and one's own body) were easier to perform than those that involved manipulating a single object alone. Actions involving unfamiliar motor patterns were more difficult to perform than those involving familiar motor patterns that were already present in the subject's repertoire. Error responses were characterized as perseverative repetition of previously instructed actions. These findings suggest that chimpanzees find the directionality of manipulated objects a more salient cue than details of the demonstrator's body movements performing the manipulation. Sought to determine the relationship between body fat and various components of gross motor proficiency. 10 tests of gross motor performance, previously shown by E. A. Fleishman (1964) to be reliable diagnostic indexes of 9 separate gross motor factors, were administered to 56 students in the US Naval School of Diving and Salvage. Six anthropometric indicators of body fat were also obtained from each S. Factor analyses confirmed the structure of the measures of physical proficiency and indicated the presence of a single dimension for body fatness. Tests of the relationships between body fatness and the components of physical proficiency revealed a selective effect where body fatness was significantly related to performance on only 3 of the 9 component measures: dynamic strength, gross body coordination, and stamina. Controlling for S age reduced the magnitude of the correlations by a slight degree but did not otherwise alter the relationships. Experiments were conducted to investigate which sensory cues are used by brown capuchins (Cebus apella) in embedded invertebrate foraging. The importance of visual, olfactory, and acoustic cues in such foraging was determined by presenting subjects with a stimulus log modified to block out given sensory cues. Experiment 1 was designed to investigate whether subjects could locate an invertebrate embedded in wood when only visual, acoustic, or olfactory information was available. Experiments 2 and 3 were designed to investigate extractive foraging behavior when two sensory cues were provided. It was hypothesized that the combination of visual and acoustic information would be necessary for subjects to successfully locate embedded invertebrates. Infant baboons in a captive peer group used objects as containers, drinking utensils, and sponges in the context of play. The baboons later used paper, browse, and other materials as tools to extract sweet liquids from apparatus designed to accommodate sponging and probing behavior. Results demonstrate flexible combinatorial manipulation and spontaneous use of tools by infant baboons. These data are consistent with hypotheses that (1) an evolutionary history of omnivorous extractive foraging is associated with the use of tools and (2) free play in an object-enriched captive environment may facilitate combinatorial manipulation in nonhuman primates. Investigated the development of spontaneous classificatory behavior in 5 chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) tested at different ages and analyzed Ss' spontaneous constructive interactions with sets of logically structured objects. The results show that chimpanzees possess a natural capacity to react to similarities and differences among test stimuli and construct classes. The general progression of their classificatory development is very similar to that reported for human infants from 6 to 24 mo. In both species, classification progresses from constructing single classes by different properties of objects to constructing single classes by similar or identical properties of objects. In addition, like humans, older chimpanzees spontaneously coordinate relations of similarities between sets and construct 2 class-consistent groupings. Two motor acts were analyzed at the level of tongue and fingers. These motor acts generated illusions. When subjects voluntarily rotated the tongue by 90°, the perceived orientation of a tactile stimulus applied to the tongue did not covary with the perceived orientation of the tongue itself. Analogously, when subjects voluntarily crossed two adjacent fingers, the perceived position of two tactile stimuli applied to the fingers did not covary with the perceived position of the fingers themselves. Although tongue and fingers were positioned accurately in space, a lack of perceptual constancy occurred for tactile stimuli applied to these body parts. Therefore, whereas position sense was preserved, correct localization of objects was lost. The occurrence of this perceptual dissociation suggests that spatial localization of tactile stimuli may be independent both of knowledge of body part location and motor activity.
