Humanising complex projects through design thinking and its effects

The last decades of research in project studies show us that humans, rather than technologies, software or mathematical models, shape project success. This is simultaneously fascinating and problematic since, while technologies, software or mathematical models are relatively predictable and straightforward, humans are far more complex, with extremely intricate links between motivations and emotions. This consideration is particularly true in complex projects where a plethora of diverse stakeholders have very different emotions and motivations toward the same project. To address this challenge, this essay proposes using design thinking principles, tools, and techniques to "humanise" complex projects. By bringing together stakeholders, including non-market stakeholders such as local communities, with diverse goals and interests and aligning them with a common purpose, design thinking can help to shape, plan, and deliver successful complex projects. While design thinking is commonly discussed in innovation studies, this essay aims to encourage its investigation and discussion in project studies.

Projects as interventions

The project scholarship community needs to revisit how it conceptualizes a ‘project’ to understand it as an intervention into nature: intervening in both existing situations and uncertain futures. Taking a post-rationalistic approach to the future, in this essay we set out how we conceive of projects as interventions, and the important implications of this for practice and scholarship. While there are promising recent developments, there is also an urgency to further shift the mindset away from conceiving of projects as solely a social or technological endeavour, with success measured in terms of cost, quality and schedule; toward a broader outcome focus, with concern for both the natural resources used and the positive and negative impacts on places and people across time. This has implications for the skills needed by practitioners and their training, for the kind of projects that are conceived and delivered, and for our scholarship community and its agendas for further research.

新中国成立以来,我国重大工程基础设施建设取得了巨大成就,在建设过程中逐渐探索出了一系列根植于“政府—市场二元作用”的、具有中国特色的重大工程组织模式。深入剖析政府—市场二元作用在重大工程建设中究竟发挥怎样的作用是分析重大工程组织模式的入口。从重大工程组织模式、政府作用、市场作用等相关概念分析出发,梳理二元作用与我国经济发展不同阶段关系,论述和建立二元作用与我国重大工程组织模式之间的相互关系框架,为进一步深化研究打下基础。     

Tackling grand challenges with projects: Five insights and a research agenda for project management theory and practice

The project management field has two blind spots: a focus on “run-of-the-mill” projects at the expense of pioneering “push-the-envelope” projects and a rigor-relevance gap in the research. There are simply too few scholarly works devoted to project management and grand challenges, those wicked, complex, uncertain, messy, boundary-crossing problems that confront the world. Drawing on the grand challenges of sustainable development and COVID-19 and the projects they provoke, this essay highlights five insights for theory and practice and suggests that selectionism and instructionism are worthwhile approaches, while collaborative rationality may trump linear rationality. We argue that project management for grand challenges is a promising land of “push-the-envelope” portfolios that can help overcome these two blind spots, regain relevance, avoid anomia, and revitalize theory and practice. To this end, we show that there is a concomitant need for a theory of grand challenge project behavior and offer an agenda for future research.
