This paper presents a flexible concept for a broadband subscriber access network which minimizes investment costs by predominantly using the existing network infrastructure. The target network may consist of either a coaxial tree-and-branch structure or symmetrical copper pairs to the subscriber, and is connected to the central head station with the aid of optical feeder lines which can be implemented or enhanced by a passive optical network (PON). In the event of an increase in bit rate requirements, the coaxial network can be expanded by dividing it into smaller, optically fed subnetworks or by supplementing it with optical overlay systems. Flexibility, expandability and low costs are achieved through the standard ATM format implemented for the signals of all interactive services down to the network termination units on the subscriber side. Those signals are transmitted in the coaxial network in frequency bands above the CATV band in accordance with a multiple of the CATV channel width to ensure that the modulation and demodulation is implemented in a cost-efficient manner while providing ‘bit rate on demand’ for a suitably high number of subscribers. Separation of the network termination unit from the customer premises equipment enables a flexible, cost-efficient subscriber configuration to be selected, existing domestic wiring to be used and several completely different subscriber terminals to be simultaneously connected.  相似文献

The integration of digital data capabilities in the soon to be widely deployed digital cellular networks, which were primarily designed for voice communications, offers a low-cost way to capture the large and ever growing market for mobile data services. The authors propose and evaluate a multiaccess protocol for integrating data traffic in the E(nhanced)-TDMA voice system with digital speech interpolation, which is an enhancement of the emerging North American digital cellular standard. The proposed, protocol combines random access with slot reservation mechanisms to statistically multiplex data packets with speech spurt packets over the shared terminal-to-base air channel. The integrated protocol requires no modification in the voice access protocol used in the E-TDMA system, and can attain performance close to that of an ideal voice/data multiplexer. Furthermore, the protocol may enable multislot assignment per TDMA frame to match the throughput needs of individual data terminals, and can accommodate application-dependent data transmission priorities  相似文献

Among several models that are available to represent the aggregate cell flow generated by on–off sources at an ATM multiplexer (either at an access or a switching node), the Interrupted Bernoulli Process (IBP) is characterized by particular simplicity and analytical tractability. The superposition of sources individually modeled as an IBP, whose cells enter a common buffer, is considered in this paper. The main goal is to compute approximations of two basic Quality of Service (QoS) indicators, namely, cell loss rate, whose analytical computation has been already presented in previous works, and the rate of cells exceeding a specified delay, whose presentation constitutes the theoretical novelty of the paper. Analytical expressions of these two quantities are given for homogeneous sources, i.e., possessing the same statistical parameters and QoS requirements. The analytical formulation is carefully evaluated by comparing the results obtained with others presented in the literature and with simulation results; in the latter, the actual cell arrival process is generated by means of a Markov Modulated Deterministic Process (MMDP) model of the on–off sources. Several comparisons are performed for different offered loads and by varying the buffer length, which show the effectiveness and the limits of the technique under investigation.  相似文献
