Six APA journals (Developmental Psychology, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, Journal of Counseling Psychology, Journal of Educational Psychology, and Journal of Personality and Social Psychology) were content analyzed for the presence of empirical articles on African Americans during the 1970–1989 publication period. The analysis revealed a declining representation of African-American research in the 6 journals. In addition, the empirical literature that does exist was found to be lacking in methodological rigor, as defined by characteristics such as the reporting of the socioeconomic status (SES) of Ss and experimenter race. Explanations for the decline were suggested, and recommendations were proposed for alleviating the growing marginalization of African-American research in the journals of mainstream psychology. Every year thousands of psychology students take courses in statistics. In spite of the importance attributed to statistics, there is no available tabulation of the usage of various statistics in the psychological literature to show what the student needs to know in order to interpret the literature and to show what statistics psychologists have found useful. This report presents such a tabulation. To allow comparisons between the statistics used in different fields of psychology, the journals examined were the APA journals that specialize in particular fields of psychology: Journal of Abnormal and Social Psychology, Journal of Applied Psychology, Journal of Comparative and Physiological Psychology, Journal of Consulting Psychology, Journal of Educational Psychology, and Journal of Experimental Psychology. Tabulations were made of the inferential statistics used in articles in these journals for the even-numbered years from 1948 to 1962, inclusive. The use of a particular type of statistical technique was recorded only once for each article, no matter how many times that technique was used in the article. Suggests that R. W. Russell (see record 1985-21215-001) provides examples of how linguistic and semantic factors (particularly the dominance of English as a universal language in psychology) limits psychology's potential development as an international discipline. Data that describe the linguistic characteristics of the Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology, International Journal of Psychology, International Journal of Intercultural Relations, and the Interamerican Journal of Psychology indicate that articles written in languages other than English (and their authors) are virtually excluded from the international communication process. This, the last issue of the Journal of Abnormal and Social Psychology, brings to an end an alliance of some 44 years' standing. [Correction Notice: An erratum for this article was reported in Vol 60(4) of Consulting Psychology Journal: Practice and Research (see record 2008-17523-003). The title of the journal was printed incorrectly on page 257 as "Counseling Psychology Journal: Practice and Research." The correct title of the journal is Consulting Psychology Journal: Practice and Research.] A content analysis of articles published in Consulting Psychology Journal: Practice and Research was performed from 1992 (Vol. 44) through 2007 (Vol. 59). A total of 342 articles were categorized into 21 derived content categories and an "Other" category. Results show that the leading categories for publication were Coaching, Development and Training, and History of Consulting. The content was fairly stable over time. The journal does appear to be meeting its primary mission of disseminating information pertinent to the field of consulting psychology. Reference lists appended to published journals are of critical importance to readers of academic literature. They allow readers to retrieve cited sources, either to increase their own knowledge or to substantiate the authors' claims, and in so doing help to establish the judgment and credibility of the authors (M. F. McLellan et al, 1992). However, erroneous references detract from the intended function of reference lists by impeding retrieval searches and by providing misleading bibliographic information (G. de Lacey et al, 1985; McLellan et al, 1992). The present study aims to assess the accuracy of reference lists in five experimental psychology journals published by the American Psychological Association (APA) in 1999 (Journal of Experimental Psychology: Animal Behavior Processes, Journal of Experimental Psychology: Applied, Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition, Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance, and Journal of Experimental Psychology: General). Perhaps the most disturbing result from this study is the finding that authors were incorrectly cited in 12% of reference list citations, with errors in the initials of the authors being the most common. Comments on the article by J. R. Haynes (August, 1983) regarding core psychology journals. Haynes originally argues that two APA journals, Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Perception and Performance and Journal of Experimental Psychology: Human Learning and Memory failed to be included in the citation impact list because of extremely low citation impact for the Journal Citation Report. However, the Journal Citation Report for 1979-1981 is an unreliable source about Journal of Experimental Psychology journals for a number of reasons, including the citation of nonarticles and the conflation of citations for different journals. The primary objective of the Canadian Journal of Psychology is to provide a vehicle for the communication of scientific research in general experimental psychology. The editor hopes to encourage Canadian experimental psychologists to take pride in their Journal, and submit their quality work to it. The Journal will continue to maintain a small and selective book review section, and it will maintain its short report section. Institutional research productivity in counseling psychology was reassessed by totaling credits for articles published for the years 1983–1992 in the following counseling-related journals: Journal of Counseling Psychology, The Counseling Psychologist, Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, Journal of Vocational Behavior, and Journal of Counseling and Development. A number of programs made substantial jumps into the institutions ranked in the top 40. High intercorrelations among the 5 journals suggest the presence of an underlying research productivity factor, and program quality is discussed in the light of these results. To assess the extent that debriefing was reported in experiments using human Ss, every article in alternate years of the Journal of Abnormal and Social Psychology and Journal of Personality and Social Psychology was examined. Each examined year showed an increase in the percentage of studies reporting debriefing, from 12% in 1964 to 47% in 1980. Power was calculated for 6,155 statistical tests in 221 journal articles published in the 1982 volumes of the Journal of Abnormal Psychology, Journal of Consulting and Clinical Psychology, and Journal of Personality and Social Psychology. Power to detect small, medium, and large effects was .17, .57, and .83, respectively. 20 years after Cohen (1962) conducted the first power survey, the power of psychological research is still low. The implications of these results concerning the proliferation of Type I errors in the published literature, the failure of replication studies, and the interpretation of null (negative) results are emphasized. An example is given of the use of power analysis to help interpret null results by setting probable upper bounds on the magnitudes of effects. Limitations of statistical power analysis, suggestions for future research, sources of computational information, and recommendations for improving power are discussed.
