The present author notes that G. J. Hornik describes, in the May issue of the American Psychologist (1963, 18, 260-261), a variation on the method of retrieval of references using 10- column cards, which was described in an article by the author in March 1962. Instead of stamping the index number of the reference on the Uniterm cards as the present author does, Hornik prefers to use punched cards with holes located in predetermined positions according to the reference number. Comments on the original article by P. L. Broadhurst (see record 1963-00108-001), which described a method for indexing various reference materials for quick retrieval of wanted information. In adapting the system to the needs of the Mathematics Project of the Committee on Programmed Instruction at Harvard University, the present author devised a system which eliminates a particular indexing problem as well as Broadhurst's system. Ontology-Centered Knowledge Management Using Information Retrieval Techniques

The paper argues that an effective solution to information and knowledge management (KM) needs of practitioners in the construction industry can be found in the provision of an adapted knowledge environment that makes use of user profiling and document summarization techniques based on information retrieval sciences. The conceptualization of the domain through ontology takes a pivotal role in the proposed knowledge environment and provides a semantic referential to ensure relevance, accuracy, and completeness of information. A set of KM services articulated around the selected ontology have been developed, using the Web services model, tested, and validated in real organizational settings. This provided the basis for formulating recommendations and key success factors for any KM project development.

The Somatropin Reference Standard (Control 951) of the National Institute of Health Sciences

Somatropin material was examined for preparation of the "Somatropin Reference Standard". The candidate material was evaluated by a domestic collaborative study in which eight laboratories participated. The protein content was determined to be 4.5 mg/Vial based on amino acid analysis. Because of the possibility of application as a chemical reference standard for assay by the HPLC method, a physico-chemical evaluation of the candidate material was also performed. By SE-HPLC, the content of polymer, dimer were determined to be 0.54%, 0.98%, respectively. By RP-HPLC, the early peak area ascribed to desamido and sulfoxide form was 1.07% of the total peak area. And for informational data, the potency of the candidate material, being estimated by three different biological methods, weight gain assay, tibia test and adiposeconversion assay is 14.8 IU/vial. Based on the above results, the candidate was authorized as the Somatropin Reference Standard of the National Institute of Health Sciences.     

The Cyclandelate Reference Standard (Control 931) of the National Institute of Health Sciences

Raw thiamine hydrochloride material was tested for preparation of the "Thiamine Hydrochloride Reference Standard (Control 931)". Analytical data obtained were as follows: melting point, 242.7 degrees C (decomposition); infrared spectrum, the same as that of the JP Thiamine Hydrochloride Reference Standard; thin-layer chromatography, one impurity was detected; high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), a trace amount of one impurity was detected; assay results, 100.4% by UV spectrophotometry and 100.0% by HPLC, respectively. Based on the above findings, the raw material was authorized as the JP Thiamine Hydrochloride Reference Standard (Control 931).

Linear Reference System for Life-Cycle Integration

Realization of the vision of integrating the facility life cycle is predicated upon the ability to share information within and between its life-cycle phases. Physical location is a potential basis for data integration, but is constrained by the lack of a common method of expression. The separation and abstraction of linear elements and measurement methods plus the formalization of location, distance, and translation expressions results in an extensible generalized Model for a linear referencing system. Location expressions tie distance expressions to the linear elements which provide the backbone along which locations are measured. The syntax and semantics of distance expressions are dictated by the measurement method being utilized. The ability to translate location expressions between methods, linear elements, and distance expressions is also formalized into a generalized translation expression. The result is a simpler model for implementation that allows data, as it is presently stored, to be utilized across the enterprise and over time. It obviates the need for conversion of the data, the applications that use it, or the business processes it supports.

Informed consent is applied more and more in routine medical practice. It is the consequence of a long history during which patients' rights have been progressively better recognised. This process begins by the right to be informed about one's health or disease and about consecutive treatment. After this information is given the patient is free to give opinion, consent or refusal with regard to what the physician proposes to improve his/her health or to treat the disease, according to present medical knowledge. Medical science has a power which must not constrain excessively patients, who may refuse some medical intervention, particularly if they have received adequate information and if they have their faculties. The physician is responsible for affording consistent information and for respecting patient's right to self-determination.     

Reference values of lipoprotein(a) in a French population

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work is to study the effect of different biological factors that could affect Lp(a) level in a presumably healthy population and to establish reference limits. METHODS: We selected 723 subjects (367 men and 356 women) for the age interval 4 to 64 years for evaluation. RESULTS: The distribution of Lp(a) is not Gaussian; 50.5% of subjects had Lp(a) concentrations under 0.10 g/l and the value for the 75th percentile was 0.27 g/l and 0.57 g/l for the 90th percentile. No relationship was observed between Lp(a) concentration and cholesterolaemia, triglyceridaemia, glycaemia, inflammatory proteins (orosomucoide and CRP), overweight, tobacco consumption and oral contraceptive use. The menopause state in women was a factor correlated with increased Lp(a) but this increase was not significant. Moreover, alcohol consumption (more than 44 g per day in men and more than 22 g per day in women) was associated with lower Lp(a) values. Among familial cardiovascular risks, only paternal listing of hypertension was associated with Lp(a) concentration in men. CONCLUSION: The measurement of Lp(a) in a young subject could be used as a genetic marker of cardiovascular risk associated with abnormal lipid metabolism and thrombosis phenomena.

Knowledge-Assisted Retrieval of Online Product Information in Architectural/Engineering/Construction

With a better understanding about the product market, industry practitioners can make more informed decisions for product specification, selection, and procurement. However, current approaches that support Architectural/Engineering/Construction (A/E/C) information acquisition do not provide a comprehensive market scan. While the Internet provides an ever-growing resource for product information, existing approaches have limited capabilities to make use of this virtual market. Therefore, the writers have developed a knowledge-assisted approach to specifically address the potential of the virtual market—help retrieve A/E/C product information, particularly information about different manufacturers, from the Internet. The paper introduces the building blocks of the developed approach, which includes domain knowledge utilization, information retrieval (IR) techniques, and strategies that incorporate domain knowledge into knowledge-supported IR approaches. Specifically, domain knowledge represented in the form of a thesaurus was used with query expansion strategies under the framework of an adaptation of the extended IR Boolean model. It was concluded from the prototype validation that domain knowledge can be extremely helpful when acquiring A/E/C product information from online resources using the developed approach.
