Abstract

A concept of instantaneous drying and energy efficiencies has been applied to analyze energy consumption in a through-circulation conveyor dryer and a batch fluid bed dryer for synthetic rubber. It is shown that the energy performance of the conveyor dryer can be improved by leveling of the moisture content distribution across the material layer by mechanical agitation, and sectioning of the air plenum in order to reduce inlet air temperature in the last two sections of the dryer. It is also shown that drying of a synthetic rubber in the fluid bed dryer is more energy-efficient than in the conveyor dryer, especially in the constant-rate period. Thus, the largest energy savings could be obtained in a two-stage dryer comprised of the plug-flow fluid bed dryer, and the belt conveyor dryer for removal of the bulk and residual water, respectively.  相似文献

Empty fruit bunch (EFB) is one of the solid wastes from crude palm oil mills and has the lowest value for utilization compared to other solid wastes. To achieve an efficient utilization of EFB, drying is considered the first crucial process due to the high moisture content of EFB. In this study, EFB drying based on exergy recovery is proposed to achieve high energy efficiency. A fluidized bed is adopted as the main dryer. The proposed model is evaluated in terms of energy efficiency, especially regarding the influence of target moisture content and fluidization velocity. Up to 92% of the energy involved in the drying process can be recirculated. The total energy consumption for drying decreases as the target moisture content decreases, though there is no significant impact of fluidization velocity to total energy consumption. In addition, the required total length of the heat transfer tubes immersed inside the fluidized bed dryer is calculated because it relates to fluidization performance and economic issues. Lower target moisture content results in a longer heat transfer tube, and higher fluidization velocity leads to a shorter heat transfer tube.  相似文献

The use of wood fuel pellets has increased worldwide in recent years, and pellet producers conclude that the lack of drying capacity is a barrier to increased production. In this study, we develop a concept of two different dryers called the two-step drying technique. The aim is to show the potential for increasing the drying capacity and improving energy efficiency when introducing a second dryer into the pellet plant. The study is theoretical and based on an industrial packed moving bed dryer. It shows that the drying capacity increased by 22% when a pneumatic second dryer was used.  相似文献

Corn, rice, and wheat seeds with an initial moisture content (IMC) of 20–25% wb were dried to moisture content below 18% wb at 40–80°C in a fluidized bed dryer (FBD) and spouted bed dryer (SBD) and the seeds with IMC 18% wb were dried to below 14% wb at air temperatures 18–30°C and relative humidity 60–70% by an in-store dryer (ISD). As a result, it appears that a two-stage drying concept is feasible in drying high-moisture-content seeds due to the high germination rate of dried seeds. Nonetheless, the drying temperature must be carefully selected. A drying temperature of 40°C was clearly safe for all samples, whereas more than 90% of wheat seeds still germinated after drying at 60°C in FBD. Furthermore, drying seeds with IMC 18% wb by ISD was safe under specified drying conditions.  相似文献

Energy consumption and rice quality are the main concerns of millers and must be assessed to ascertain suitable industrial drying strategy. In this article, industrial paddy drying methods as usually practiced in the BERNAS paddy drying complexes of Malaysia have been evaluated. The analysis showed that the specific electrical and thermal energy consumption varied between 16.19 kWh to 22.07 kWh and 787.22 MJ to 1015.32 MJ, respectively, in single-stage paddy drying (SSPD) using an inclined bed dryer (IBD) to dry each tonne of freshly harvested paddy with average moisture content of 23.35 ± 0.86% wb. On the other hand, the energy consumptions for two-stage paddy drying (TSPD) with a fluidized bed dryer (FBD) followed by IBD were 21.37 kWh/t to 30.69 kWh/t and 666.81 MJ/t to 1083.42 MJ/t, respectively. SSPD at 35–39°C and TSPD using FBD at 120°C as the first stage, followed by IBD as the second stage at lower temperature of 35–39°C yielded 2–3.6% higher head rice yield than paddy-dried by a single stage with IBD using comparatively higher temperature of 40–44°C. Therefore, IBD is recommended to be operated using a temperature of 35–39°C both in single-stage drying and second-stage drying of paddy after fluidized bed drying to obtain quality rice.  相似文献

This article reports the results of an exploratory study designed to reduce heat and electricity consumption in industrial drying of radiata pine. The experiments were performed with slight modifications of the standard drying schedules used by the sawmill to dry radiata pine in 100-m3 industrial kilns. The heat and electricity consumption were determined with data collected during the drying runs and calculations based on mathematical models. The results showed that depending on the case, heat and power consumption were respectively reduced by up to 14 and 35%.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

he performance of a laboratory scale jet spouted bed (JSB) for drying rice flour slurry was studied. The bed consisted of ceramic balls (5028 mm diameter) and the rice flour slurry was sprayed onto the moving particle surface near the inlet part. All the experiments were carried out at the jet spouting regime. This regime has high bed void fraction and violent movement and collision of bed particles. As a result, the dried product layer is attrited from particle surface as a fine powder and entrained from the bed by the spouting air. The experimental result were presented to show the effects of static bed height, inlet air flow rate and temperature, and feed concentration and flow rate on the outlet air temperature, thernal efficiency, and mean particle size and moisture content of the product. Asimple mathematical model, which is based on the conservation of mass and energy equations, was developed. Predicted results agreed well with those obtained from the experiment.  相似文献

The energy performance of a dryer and a drying process is characterized by various indices such as volumetric evaporation rate, steam consumption, unit heat consumption and energy (thermal) efficiency. Of all indices, energy efficiency is the most frequently quoted, in technical specifications. A thorough analysis of available information, including the Handbook of Industrial Drying, points to the inconsistency of terminology, definition and data interpretation. Thus, reported data on energy efficiency vary significantly and frequently contradict both drying theory and industrial practice. To establish a common platform to deal with energy issues, this article provides a concise overview of the most common definitions of energy efficiency, along with a critical review of the published data. A need for energy audit and benchmarking is pointed out. To eliminate shortcomings of the energy efficiency as a lumped parameter, and to allow analysis of energy consumption over time (batch drying) or distance (continuous drying), instantaneous and cumulative indices are proposed. Using these indices, the energy performance of selected dryers is examined, and possible modifications to dryer design and operating parameters are indicated in order to reduce the overall energy consumption.  相似文献

Simulation of the heat pump cycle and the drying process has been carried out to obtain the design parameters of the dryer. The analysis indicates that a specific moisture extraction rate (SMER) greater than 3.4 kg/kWh can be obtained. A box-type heat pump dryer has been developed and investigated for the performance of drying of shredded radish. Heat pump drying took 1.0–1.5 times longer than hot air drying. However, the heat pump dryer showed considerable improvement in energy savings. The SMER of the heat pump dryer was about three times higher than that of the hot air dryer.  相似文献

Performance and energy efficiency of two types of dryers for fish feed are compared. The first dryer was a belt dryer located at a fish feed production facility in Norway. The second dryer was a counterflow multideck dryer at a fish feed production facility in Chile. In both dryers there was only a slight decrease in drying rate over the dryer. Product samples showed a standard deviation of 0.45% on an average moisture content of 10.2% (wb) for the belt dryer and 0.49% on an average of 8.6% (wb) for the counterflow dryer. Mass and heat balances showed good accuracy. In order to compare the energy use of both dryers, normalized energy consumption and efficiency were calculated for equal feed and air inlet temperatures using two methods: the primary energy method and the energy difference method. The average normalized specific energy consumption for the belt dryer was 3,386 kJ/kg water evaporation (primary energy method) and 2,970 kJ/kg (energy difference method), with efficiencies of 56 and 64%, respectively. For the counterflow dryer the average specific energy consumption was 2,893 kJ/kg (primary energy method) and 2,393 kJ/kg (energy difference method), with efficiencies of 70 and 85%, respectively.  相似文献

A modified quasi-stationary method has been proposed to describe drying kinetics of particulate materials dried in convective dryers with active hydrodynamic regimes. Both our own results and literature data were used. These include sliced celery, cranberry, diced carrot, wheat and polystyrene granules dried in four types of dryers: pulsed fluid bed dryer, fluid bed dryer with a mixer, spouted bed dryer with a draft tube, and vortex dryer. The method was validated by comparing experimental data with results of modeling in terms of a reduced moisture content and material temperature. A new form of the generalized drying curve has been proposed with the reduced time and the index of hydrodynamic intensity as parameters. The equations developed can be used to calculate the total drying time and determine the temporal variation of the moisture content and material temperature.  相似文献

While a few years ago the cost and availability of energy was not an important issue for the Canadian lumber industry, this situation has recently changed. Today, companies that have operated trouble-free for many years using the same technologies and practices may now have to adapt to the rising cost of fossil fuels and concerns about greenhouse gas emissions. This article addresses this problem for the particular case of the softwood lumber industry. The study describes the most important sources of energy losses in conventional drying and proposes a number of strategies and technologies to reduce kiln energy demand.  相似文献

In this context, the objective of this work was to develop a pilot-scale belt dryer, which operates also as a fixed and fluidized bed. Brachiaria brizantha seeds dehydration was analyzed under different air velocities and temperatures. Experimental data of moisture content variation along the drying time was successfully fit to a one-term exponential model. The experimental drying rate points were calculated by approximating the derivatives to finite differences. Its behavior was accomplished fitting curves of the drying rate versus water content and time. Finally, fissure, germination, and vigor rates were analyzed as a function of the drying conditions so that the experimental conditions combine the best process efficiency with the best physiological quality maintenance.  相似文献

This research aims at modeling the rotary drying of carton packaging waste and analyzing the energy performance of the process. Drying data were obtained in a semi-pilot rotary dryer, 0.45 m diameter and 2.7 m rotating drum long, operating with an air velocity of 1 m/s and air inlet temperature of 90°C and 10 rpm. Under the operating conditions employed, the analysis of the data showed that the energy performance of the drying process increased from 5 to 75% as the inlet wet solid feed rate increased from 1.8 to 19 kg/h. In addition, at this latter wet-solid feed rate, the reduction of the air velocity in the dryer to 0.8 m/s also led to an increase in the performance of drying process from 80 to 94%. Furthermore, with a 95% confidence interval, the model used was adequate to predict the air and solid temperature as well as the air humidity and the solids moisture content.  相似文献
