Max-utility wireless resource management for best-effort traffic   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Due to the characteristics of wireless channels, utility-based resource management in wireless networks requires a set of mechanisms that are different from those for wireline networks. This paper explores in detail why and how the requirements are different. In particular, we analyze the wireless network performance to find out the scheduling algorithm that maximizes total utility of the system. Unlike previous studies, this paper focuses on scenarios in which wireless networks are not fully loaded and all of the users are best-effort data users, i.e., there is no streaming user. Our first key conclusion is that Kleinrock's Conservation Law provides a valuable means to accurately capture the perceived rates of best-effort users in such systems. The queueing analysis further indicates that, within periods during which channel conditions are stable for each user, albeit differ from user to user, the max-utility scheduling algorithm can be derived using queueing theorem and can be readily implemented in actual systems for utility functions that are of exponential or log format. When further taking into account the time-variant nature of wireless channel conditions, our simulation results demonstrate that dynamic weighted fair queueing, with weights adjusted according to the channel conditions, can achieve highly desirable performance with great flexibility.  相似文献

We propose a framework for network-assisted radio resource management in wireless data networks. This type of radio resource management techniques offer implementation and capacity benefits compared to conventional, interference-measurement based, dynamic channel assignment (DCA) algorithms. The basic idea is to use interbase signaling to shift most of the burden of the resource allocation from the air interface to the backbone infrastructure. By exchanging channel assignment as well as other relevant information in real time through the backbone network, each base can calculate the impact of a resource assignment on the system. As a result, rapid interference measurements, which are typically needed to implement DCA schemes, are replaced by a limited amount of path loss measurements and the computation of interference conditions by the base stations. This significantly reduces the measurement and over-the-air signaling requirements, and can also provide an opportunity for a better optimization of the system performance. We focus on two specific algorithms: network-assisted least-interference-based dynamic packet assignment (NA-LI-DPA) and network-assisted dynamic packet assignment with throughput optimization (NA-DPA). NA-LI-DPA closely resembles a least-interference-based dynamic channel assignment algorithm, and NA-DPA attempts to further improve the overall system throughput. The algorithms, as defined, are appropriate for a best-effort data service, where the primary goal is to provide a higher throughput. However, it will be clear from the discussion that it is also feasible to alter the algorithms to optimize performance metrics other than throughput, e.g., to ensure a certain quality of service. We show through simulation that, for a system like enhanced general packet radio service (EGPRS) system, NA-DPA can provide a throughput that is 50% higher than random packet assignment, and 25% higher than that obtained by conventional DCA algorithms  相似文献

This paper addresses the issue of how to solve convex programming problems by analog artificial neural networks (ANNs), with applications in asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) resource management. We first show that the essential and difficult optimization problem of dimensioning the system of virtual subnetworks in ATM networks can be modeled as a convex programming task. Here the transformation of the problem into a convex programming task is a nontrivial step. We also present and analyze an analog ANN architecture that is capable of solving such convex programming tasks with time-varying penalty multipliers. The latter property makes it possible to perform quick sensitivity analysis with respect to the constraints in order to identify the bottleneck capacities in the network or those which give the highest return if we invest in extending them  相似文献

Satellite networks with dynamic bandwidth allocation capabilities (DBAC) are based on classical circuit switches. The DBAC payload allows changing the capacity of each connection dynamically, without tearing down and setting up the connection. This article proposes a general customizable QoS scenario for heterogeneous wireless access network technologies. The scenario provides robust and flexible QoS support by adapting the amount of resources reserved for the characteristics of the wireless channel, as well as automatic reconfiguration mechanisms of the multimedia encoding rate and error-resilient techniques to adapt to the dynamic mobile communication environment. Two new scenarios, adaptive FEC and MAC-Lite, are introduced to the proposed scheme. These enable a maximizing of the overall performance of the wireless network. The appropriate interfaces within the core network are described for performing end-to-end QoS, which deliver network meters and exchange QoS parameters with the proposed intra and inter cross-layer approaches, including context transfer during handover. Each part, extended by the proposed method can be configured by the application and be independently implemented. To evaluate the proposed scheme, the QoS components were integrated into a trial platform that was built and simulations were then performed. Current middleware technologies cannot meet the demands of new application areas, such as embedded and mobile systems, that require mechanisms for dealing with a changing environment. This article reviews several approaches for providing adaptive resource management for middleware. Current middleware technologies, such as the Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) and .NET (http://msdn.microsoft.com/net), mask system and network heterogeneity problems and alleviate the inherent complexity of distributed systems in many application areas. However, the recent emergence of new application areas for middleware, such as embedded systems, real-time systems, and multimedia, imposes challenges that few existing middleware platforms can meet. In particular, because they impose greater resource-sharing and dynamism demands, these application areas require more complex and sophisticated middleware. Resource sharing must be controlled and predictable to ensure that activities running on the same middleware instance have adequate resources.  相似文献

The support of broadband multimedia applications over an enterprise network poses a broad range of networking challenges for efficient resource management, intelligent switching, and access control for distributed information. We propose two server-based scheduling algorithms, with low computational complexity, to guarantee multimedia information synchronization at the destination, with minimum presentation delays and buffer requirements. We outline a communication framework, highlighting the issues and challenges faced by today's enterprise networks to support multimedia services. We describe the proposed connection establishment and resource allocation schemes in resource-constrained enterprise networks. The objective is to manage the limited resources of the network for maximum utilization. Towards this end we present a dynamic capacity allocation scheme to support connections for multiple users. Specifically, we show that the channel capacity allocation problem can be formulated as a quadratic programming problem. This allocation scheme is implemented at each intermediate switch to dynamically determine the capacity allocation. The effects of interswitch rate mismatch and network delay offset scheduling have also been incorporated in the management framework. The 3G and Beyond 3G wireless networks introduce new technologies, and in many cases, new frequency bands. Integrated hierarchical network architectural studies suggest that by using a Common Radio Resource Manager to engineer traffic across these component networks, operators can achieve increased efficiency and flexibility in supporting changing traffic demands. This study demonstrates how vertical handovers can be used to optimize network performance, by adaptively rearranging traffic across network boundaries. We survey policy implementations that consider which services/sessions shall move, where they shall move, when they shall move, and whether they shall return. 针对异构认知网络中的资源管理问题,提出了基于认知的动态分级资源管理方法(DHRM)。根据不同时间尺度,引入小波神经网络、基于维纳过程的预测方法和增强学习算法获得业务分布变化、切换呼叫资源需求量以及用户喜好等信息,从而动态调配异构多网络各级可用资源。在资源合理分配基础上,根据各网络实时状态以及用户喜好,通过多属性决策算法动态地将业务流分配到最佳接入网络中。仿真结果表明,DHRM相对于网间静态资源管理方法系统容量提高了约20%。  相似文献

Heterogeneous wireless systems are characterized by the physical coexistence of a variety of radio access technologies with different, but also complementary, technical characteristics and performance. A key aspect of heterogeneous systems is then the implementation of efficient joint radio resource management mechanisms. In this context, this paper presents and evaluates novel joint radio resource management techniques based on the CEA bankruptcy distribution rule. The proposed policies base their distribution decisions on the system conditions and the varying quality of service requirements present in multimedia scenarios. The obtained results demonstrate that the proposed policies can efficiently distribute the radio resources with a low computational cost.  相似文献

This paper presents a mechanism for active resource management (ARM) in a differentiated services environment. While the differentiated services architecture and the bandwidth broker agent provide a mechanism for QoS management through resource reservation, this mechanism is based on a static provisioning of resources. As bandwidth requirement are typically dynamic, such a static reservation approach can either lead to wasted bandwidth or leave applications resource‐starved. The active resource management approach presented in this paper addresses this problem by dynamically reallocating resources based on current network state and applications requirements. Discusses the use of link-sharing mechanisms in packet networks and presents algorithms for hierarchical link-sharing. Hierarchical link-sharing allows multiple agencies, protocol families, or traffic types to share the bandwidth on a link in a controlled fashion. Link-sharing and real-time services both require resource management mechanisms at the gateway. Rather than requiring a gateway to implement separate mechanisms for link-sharing and real-time services, the approach in the paper is to view link-sharing and real-time service requirements as simultaneous, and in some respect complementary, constraints at a gateway that can be implemented with a unified set of mechanisms. While it is not possible to completely predict the requirements that might evolve in the Internet over the next decade, the authors argue that controlled link-sharing is an essential component that can provide gateways with the flexibility to accommodate emerging applications and network protocols  相似文献
