This paper presents a parametric study on mixed convection heat transfer in an inclined arc-shape cavity subjected to a moving lid. The governing equations for the inclined arc-shape cavity were derived with the incorporation of inertia and buoyant force terms and solved by using the finite-volume method and numerical grid generation scheme. The parametric study considered three physical parameters including inclination angle, Reynolds number and Grashof number, and explored the effect of these parameters on the flow field and heat transfer characteristics. Computations were conducted for the Reynolds number ranging from 100 to 1500, Grashof number from 105 to 107 and inclination angle from 150 to 600. The numerical results show that the flow pattern becomes inertia-dominant and the strength of the primary vortex generally increases as the Reynlods number increases. As the Grashof number increases, the strength of the inertial-induced vortex decreases and the strength of the buoyancy-induced vortex increases. The strength of the vortexes decreases with the increasing inclination angle and the buoyancy-induced flow becomes more dominant. The average Nusselt number increases as the Grashof number increases for all the inclination angles studied here. The local friction increases with the increasing inclination angle, and becomes significant as the Grashof number increases.  相似文献

This study is concerned with transient and steady state heat transfer by natural convection in a differentially heated cavity. The purpose is to evaluate a passive approach for enhancing heat transfer through the cavity. In this study, the effects of three different corner geometries (including sharp, round and straight corners) and adiabatic extensions of various dimensions on natural convection heat transfer are investigated numerically. The numerical results show marginal variations of the heat transfer rates among the three different corner shapes and a strong dependence of heat transfer enhancement on the Rayleigh number. For a given Rayleigh number, the enhancement of heat transfer by adiabatic extensions is limited.  相似文献

The present work is concerned with computation of natural convection flow in a square enclosure with a centered internal conducting square block both of which are given an inclination angle. Finite volume method through the concepts of staggered grid and SIMPLE algorithm have been applied. Deferred QUICK scheme has been used to discretize the convective fluxes and central difference for diffusive fluxes. The problem of conjugate natural convection has been taken up for validating the code. The abrupt variation in the properties at the solid/fluid interface are taken care of with the harmonic mean formulation. Solution has been performed in the computational domain as a whole with proper treatment at the solid/fluid interface. Computations have been performed for Ra = 103–106, angle of inclination varying from 15° to 90° in steps of 15° and ratio of solid to fluid thermal conductivities of 0.2 and 5.0. Results are presented in terms of streamlines, isotherms, local and average Nusselt number.  相似文献

Natural convection heat transfer in partially open inclined square cavities   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
A numerical study has been carried out on inclined partially open square cavities, which are formed by adiabatic walls and a partial opening. The surface of the wall inside the cavity facing the partial opening is isothermal. Steady-state heat transfer by laminar natural convection in a two dimensional partially open cavity is studied by numerically solving equations of mass, momentum and energy. Streamlines and isotherms are produced, heat and mass transfer is calculated. A parametric study is carried out using following parameters: Rayleigh number from 103 to 106, dimensionless aperture size from 0.25 to 0.75, aperture position at high, center and low, and inclination of the opening from 0° (facing upward) to 120° (facing 30° downward). It is found that the volume flow rate and Nusselt number are an increasing function of Rayleigh number, aperture size and generally aperture position. Other parameters being constant, Nusselt number is a non-linear function of the inclination angle. Depending on the application, heat transfer can be maximized or minimized by selecting appropriate parameters, namely aperture size, aperture position and inclination angle at a given operation Rayleigh number.  相似文献

A numerical investigation of laminar mixed convection flows through a copper–water nanofluid in a square lid-driven cavity has been executed. In the present study, the top and bottom horizontal walls are insulated while the vertical walls are maintained at constant but different temperatures. The study has been carried out for the Rayleigh number 104 to 106, Reynolds number 1 to 100 and the solid volume fraction 0 to 0.05. The thermal conductivity and effective viscosity of nanofluid have been calculated by Patel and Brinkman models, respectively. The effects of solid volume fraction of nanofluids on hydrodynamic and thermal characteristics have been investigated and discussed. It is found that at the fixed Reynolds number, the solid concentration affects on the flow pattern and thermal behavior particularly for a higher Rayleigh number. In addition it is observed that the effect of solid concentration decreases by the increase of Reynolds number.  相似文献

A numerical study of unsteady laminar mixed convection flow in a square cavity with ventilation ports due to an oscillating velocity at the inlet port is performed. It is found that after certain time duration, a periodic variation in the fluid flow and temperature field in the cavity are created. It is observed that the heat transfer is enhanced for all the Strouhal numbers investigated in comparison to its steady state case. To realize the optimizing Strouhal number to reach the best performance of the system, the total Nusselt number and the coefficient of pressure drop in a cycle of the oscillation is evaluated with respect to the Strouhal number. It is found that for a region of the Strouhal number between 0.5 and 1, the performance of the system will be desirable with considering both the maximum heat transfer rate and minimum pressure drop in the cavity.  相似文献

Mixed convection of a nanofluid consisting of water and SiO2 in an inclined enclosure cavity has been studied numerically. The left and right walls are maintained at different constant temperatures while upper and bottom insulated walls are moving lids. Two-phase mixture model has been used to investigate the thermal behaviors of the nanofluid for various inclination angles of enclosure ranging from θ = − 60° to θ = 60°, volume fraction from 0% to 8%, Richardson numbers varying from 0.01 to 100 and constant Grashof number 104. The governing equations are solved numerically using the finite-volume approach. Results are presented in the form of streamlines, isotherms, distribution of nanoparticles and average Nusselt number. In addition, effects of solid volume fraction of nanofluids on the hydrodynamic and thermal characteristics have been investigated. The results reveal that addition of nanoparticles enhances heat transfer in the cavity remarkably and causes significant changes in the flow pattern. Besides, effect of inclination angle is more pronounced at higher Richardson numbers.  相似文献

A two-dimensional numerical simulation is carried out to understand the effects of thermal buoyancy and Prandtl number on flow characteristics and mixed convection heat transfer over two equal isothermal square cylinders placed in a tandem arrangement within a channel at low Reynolds numbers. The spacing between the cylinders is fixed with four widths of the cylinder. The numerical results are presented for the range of conditions as: 1 ≤ Re ≤ 30, 0.7 ≤ Pr ≤ 100 (the maximum value of Peclet number being 3000) and 0 ≤ Ri ≤ 1 for a fixed blockage parameter B = 10%. The unsteady numerical simulations are performed with a finite volume code based on the PISO algorithm in a collocated grid system. The representative streamlines, vortex structures and isotherm patterns are presented and discussed. In addition, the overall drag and lift coefficients, recirculation length and average Nusselt numbers are determined to elucidate the role of Reynolds, Prandtl and Richardson numbers on flow and heat transfer. It is found that the flow is completely steady for the chosen ranges of the parameters.  相似文献

In this article, the effects of angle of inclination on heat transfer by mixed convection have been analyzed numerically in a square cavity packed with a CuO nanofluid. Cavity boundaries are constructed by having sinusoidal varying temperature on sidewalls, inactive horizontal walls, and the hot passing plate at the center of the cavity. The transport equations for fluid and heat are solved using the finite-volume method with SIMPLE algorithm. The Richardson number (Ri) varying from 0.01 to 100, inclination angle (γ) from 0° to 90°, wall speed ratios (λ) from 0 to 3 and volume fraction of nanoparticles (φ) from 0.0 to 0.1 are given and represented in the form of flow fields, temperature fields, and mean heat transfer graphs. It is detected that the principal flow constraints have a substantial impact on the flow lines and thermal lines. Specifically, the structures of cavity inclination, existence of copper nanoparticles, and the hot wall in motion at the midpoint of the cavity are established to enrich the overall rate of heat transfer. Correspondingly, in the present study, the Vajjha and Das model is taken into account for the effective thermal conductivity and viscosity of the nanofluid; application of this model is beneficial for the industries working in a high-temperature environment.  相似文献

Steady laminar binary mixed convection flow along a vertical circular cone under the combined buoyancy effects of thermal and species diffusion is studied analytically. The analysis is confined to mass diffusion processes with low concentration levels. In the analysis the surface of the cone is assumed to be at a uniform temperature and uniform concentration. Numerical results for the local Sherwood number, local Nusselt number and local friction factor are presented. Representative temperature, concentration and velocity profiles are also shown. The analysis covers the diffusion of common gases and vapours into air. Considerations are given to the situations where the buoyancy forces assist and oppose the forced convection flow for various possible combinations of the thermal and species diffusion processes.  相似文献

A numerical study of unsteady mixed convection flows through an alumina-water nanofluid in a square cavity with inlet and outlet ports due to incoming flow oscillation is performed. It is found that an oscillating velocity at the inlet port cased to creating a periodic variation in the fluid flow and temperature field in the cavity after a certain time duration. The influence of the nanoparticle on the flow and temperature fields has been plotted and discussed. The effect of the oscillation frequency is concealed in a dimensionless number which is the Strouhal number. It is observed that the heat transfer is enhanced for all the Strouhal and Richardson numbers investigated by adding the nanoparticle to the base fluid. It is also found that the performance of the nanoparticle on the enhancement of the heat transfer at higher Richardson numbers is less than that of lower Richardson numbers.  相似文献

The present numerical study deals with mixed convection in a square lid-driven cavity partially heated from below and filled with water-base nanofluid containing various volume fractions of Cu, Ag, Al2O3 and TiO2. Finite difference method was employed to solve the dimensionless governing equations of the problem. The effects of governing parameters, namely, Reynolds number, solid volume fraction, different values of the heat source length and different locations of the heat source on the streamlines and isotherms contours as well as Nusselt number and average Nusselt number along the heat source were considered. The present results are validated by favorable comparisons with previously published results. The results of the problem are presented in graphical and tabular forms and discussed.  相似文献

The transient heat transfer in a heat‐generating fin with simultaneous surface convection and radiation is studied numerically for a step change in base temperature. The convection heat transfer coefficient is assumed to be a power law function of the local temperature difference between the fin and its surrounding fluid. The values of the power exponent n are chosen to include simulation of natural convection (laminar and turbulent) and nucleate boiling among other convective heat transfer modes. The fin is assumed to have uniform internal heat generation. The transient response of the fin depends on the convection‐conduction parameter, radiation‐conduction parameter, heat generation parameter, power exponent, and the dimensionless sink temperature. The instantaneous heat transfer characteristics such as the base heat transfer, surface heat loss, and energy stored are reported for a range of values of these parameters. When the internal heat generation exceeds a threshold the fin acts as a heat sink instead of a heat source. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The development of magnetic field effect on mixed convective flow in a horizontal channel with a bottom heated open enclosure has been numerically studied. The enclosure considered has rectangular horizontal lower surface and vertical side surfaces. The lower surface is at a uniform temperature Th while other sides of the cavity along with the channel walls are adiabatic. The governing two-dimensional flow equations have been solved by using Galarkin weighted residual finite element technique. The investigations are conducted for different values of Rayleigh number (Ra), Reynolds number (Re) and Hartmann number (Ha). Various characteristics such as streamlines, isotherms and heat transfer rate in terms of the average Nusselt number (Nu), the Drag force (D) and average bulk temperature (θav) are presented. The results indicate that the mentioned parameters strongly affect the flow phenomenon and temperature field inside the cavity whereas in the channel these effects are less significant.  相似文献

Control of mixed convection (combined forced and natural convection) in a lid-driven square cavity is performed using a short triangular conductive fin. A numerical technique is used to simulate the flow and temperature fields. The vertical walls of the cavity are differentially heated. Both the top lid and the bottom wall are adiabatic. The fin is located on one of the motionless walls of the cavity. Three different cases have been studied based on the location of the fin. In this context, Cases I, II and III refer to the fin on the left, bottom and right walls, respectively. Results are presented for +x and −x directions of the top lid in horizontal axis and different Richardson numbers as Ri = 0.1, 1.0 and 10.0. It is observed that the triangular fin is a good control parameter for heat transfer, temperature distribution and flow field.  相似文献

This paper investigates the heat and mass transfer under magnetohydrodynamic mixed convection flow of a binary gas mixture in a four-sided lid-driven square cavity. The enclosure's left wall is sinusoidally heated and acts as a source term, while the right wall functions as a sink. The cavity's horizontal walls are adiabatic and impermeable to mass transfer. The governing equations under Boussinesq approximation and stream function-vorticity formulation are solved using the alternating-direction-implicit scheme, a finite-difference method. The numerical scheme's consistency and stability are demonstrated using the matrix method. The MATLAB code is written, validated against some existing studies, and used to perform numerical simulations. The numerical solutions are graphically examined by visualizing the streamline, isotherm, and concentration contours for nondimensional parameters, such as Hartmann number ( 0 H a 100 ) $(0\le Ha\le 100)$ , heat absorption or generation coefficient ( 2 ϕ 2 ) $(-2\le \phi \le 2)$ , Richardson number ( 0.01 R i 100 ) $(0.01\le Ri\le 100)$ , and buoyancy ratio ( 6 N 6 ) $(-6\le N\le 6)$ . The magnetic field modifies the temperature and concentration distribution in the cavity, depending on the convection mode. The magnetic field forces the fluid to stagnate in different regions of the cavity, depending on the mode of convection. It was found that the difference between the maximum and minimum temperature and concentration at the cavity's midpoint increases up to 13 and 10 times, respectively, in the natural convection compared with the forced convection. The average Nusselt number on the vertical walls of the cavity is maximum in natural convection in the absence of a magnetic field but reaches a minimum value at H a = 100 $Ha=100$ in forced and mixed convection. The average Sherwood number on the cavity's vertical walls decreases with the magnetic field in mixed and natural convection.  相似文献

The characteristics of transition from laminar to chaotic mixed convection in a two-dimensional multiple ventilated cavity is analyzed in this paper. The horizontal air streams enter the cavity from the two inflow-openings near the top of both vertical walls, while the outflow openings are near the bottoms of both vertical walls. The results obtained for a range of the Richardson number, Ri, from 0.01 to 5 at Pr = 0.71, the Reynolds number, Re, from 1000 to 2500 and the inlet flow angle, φ, based on 0°, 20°, 45° and 70°. The results show that, as Ri increases, the solution may exhibit a change from steady-state to periodic oscillation, and then to non-periodic oscillatory state. However, the flow inside the cavity becomes steady-state again as Richardson number increases further. The results also show that the effect of inlet flow angle on the oscillations of mixed convection is evident, the configuration with φ = 0° is the most unstable among the four values of φ. The non-periodic oscillatory solution at Re = 2500 is studied by means of phase portraits, correlation dimension, Kolmogorov entropy and Lyapunov exponents to detect chaos. The phase portraits show the evolution of the attractor from a stable fixed point to a limited cycle to chaos, and finally, to a stable fixed point again, and the correlation dimension, Kolmogorov entropy and the largest Lyapunov numbers all show that the behavior of mixed convection in this dynamical system lies on a low-dimensional chaotic attractor according to the non-periodic oscillatory solution.  相似文献

The SIMPLE-C scheme is used to solve the mass, momentum, energy conservation equations and turbulent k-ε equations with a two-layer model near wall for a fluid past a reciprocating circular ribbed channel when changing Reynolds number (4250-10,000), Grashof number (0-400,000,000), pulsating number (0-9.3) and cooling mediums. The average time-mean Nusselt number for the reciprocating circular ribbed channel can be 45-182% larger than that for the equivalent stationary smooth channel. The heat transfer enhancement produced by buoyancy for the reciprocating circular ribbed channel decreases as the pulsating number increases. The oscillating amplitude of Nusselt number with crank angle in the oil-cooling is less than in the water-cooling.  相似文献

Natural convection heat transfer from an isothermal horizontal fin attached to a cylinder, confined between two adiabatic walls of constant height is investigated by the Mach–Zehnder interferometry technique. This study is focused on the effect of a perforated fin attached to the bottom of a cylinder while the vertical position of the cylinder (Y ) changes between two walls with a constant distance of W measuring 1.5 times the cylinder diameter. The cylinder's average Nusselt numbers are determined for three ratios of vertical position to its diameter, Y /D = 0.5, 1.5, 2, and 3. The Rayleigh number ranges from 4.5 × 103 to 1.2 × 104. The distance between the walls is chosen to be 1.5 D, that is, an optimum distance at which the Nusselt number is maximum. The effect of the perforated fin on free convection heat transfer is investigated and compared with other works. Results show outstanding enhancement in heat transfer, with a minimum result of 40% and maximum of 90%. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The effects of cross-buoyancy and of Prandtl number on the flow and heat transfer characteristics of an isothermal square cylinder confined in a channel has been investigated here. The numerical results have been presented for the range of conditions as: 1 ≤ Re ≤ 30, 0.7 ≤ Pr ≤ 100 (the maximum value of Peclet number being 3000) and 0 ≤ Ri ≤ 1for a fixed blockage ratio of 0.125. The overall drag and lift coefficients, local and average Nusselt numbers and the representative streamline and isotherm plots are presented to elucidate the role of Reynolds number, Prandtl number and Richardson number. The drag coefficient is found to be less sensitive to the Richardson number than the lift coefficient.  相似文献
