This study tested the efficacy of selected personality, behavioural, and social/organizational variables as predictors of adaptation to night work. Sixty female student nurses were studied during their first 15 months of shiftwork. Twenty-two worked on rotating day and afternoon shifts throughout, while the remaining 38 began regular night shifts after six months. Psychological symptoms were measured at baseline (Stage 1), six months (Stage 2) and 15 months (Stage 3). Repeated measures analysis of variance revealed a significant shift group x symptoms interaction (p less than 0.05) between Stages 2 and 3. Only the night workers displayed a significant increase (Tukey HSD: p less than 0.01) in symptoms between Stages 1 and 3. Multiple regression analysis revealed that neuroticism and perceived work/nonwork conflict predicted symptoms at Stage 2. Night work, social support from supervisors, and morningness were predictors at Stage 3. These results suggest that organisational, behavioural, and physiological factors moderate the impact of night work on psychological well-being, and personality factors do not.  相似文献

This study examined the impact of night shift on six dimensions of mood. The efficacy of a range of personality, behavioural, and social/organizational predictors of these responses was also examined. Thirty-five female student nurses were studied during their first period of night work. ANOVAs indicated that only fatigue-inertia and vigour-activity were significantly affected by night work. Multivariate profile analyses revealed that significant changes were predominantly confined to the interval between the preceding rest day (B) and the first night (N1), although vigour-activity dropped significantly between Nl and N2 and rose significantly by N5 for one group of subjects. Multiple regression analyses revealed that morningness, neuroticism, work-non-work conflict, and sleep quality between shifts predicted fatigue-inertia. Extroversion and social support from both co-workers and family predicted vigour-activity. Extroversion and social support from co-workers appeared to predict the positive affect component of vigour-activity, rather than the vigour and energy component.  相似文献

This study aimed to explore criteria for shift work tolerance and to investigate the relationships between personality traits and states and shift work tolerance. Eighty-nine policemen and police women completed a questionnaire, once during consecutive night shifts and again during rotating shifts, and their responses were used to assess anxiety, emotional control, positive and negative affect, health complaints, sleep quality, difficulties in social and domestic life, and perceptions about shift work. Both the criteria for tolerance and the relationship between tolerance and personality varied according to shift type. Night shift tolerance involved four factors--somatic health, flexibility, sleep and sleep need--while rotating shift tolerance involved three factors--somatic health, flexibility and fatigue. Tolerance of shift work was associated with anxiety, repressive emotional style and mood. During night shifts, anxiety was the most influential personality factor for the somatic health and sleep dimensions of shift tolerance. During rotating shifts, positive and negative moods, rather than trait personality factors, were important predictors of the somatic health and fatigue shift tolerance dimensions. These results suggest a mechanism for more effective matching of workers to suitable shift schedules.  相似文献

Among police officers in Denmark, we studied (i) how many consecutive night shifts participants preferred at baseline; (ii) preferences regarding three intervention conditions (two, four, and seven consecutive night shifts followed by the same number of days off/day shifts: ‘2 + 2’, ‘4 + 4’, ‘7 + 7’) at follow-up; (iii) characteristics of participants preferring each of these intervention conditions. Questionnaire data from a crossover intervention study were used (baseline: n = 73; follow-up: n = 68). At baseline, 49% preferred four consecutive night shifts. At follow-up, 57% preferred ‘4 + 4’, 26% preferred ‘2 + 2’ and 26% preferred ‘7 + 7’. Participants, who preferred longer spells of night work experienced that night work was less demanding, found it easier to sleep at different times of the day, and were more frequently evening types compared with participants who preferred shorter spells of night work. The participants’ preferences are likely to be influenced by their previous shift work experience.

Practitioner Summary: We investigated police officers’ preferences regarding the number of consecutive night shifts. The majority preferred four consecutive night shifts. Those who preferred the longer spells of night work found night work less demanding, found it easier to sleep at different times of the day, and were more frequently evening types.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to compare physical workload, electromyography (EMG) of the trapezius muscle, neck pain and mental well-being at work between night and day shifts in twenty Swiss nurses. Work pulse (average increase of heart rate over resting heart rate) was lower during night (27 bpm) compared to day shifts (34 bpm; p < 0.01). Relative arm acceleration also indicated less physical activity during night (82% of average) compared to day shifts (110%; p < 0.01). Rest periods were significantly longer during night shifts. Trapezius muscle rest time was longer during night (13% of shift duration) than day shifts (7%; p < 0.01) and the 50th percentile of EMG activity was smaller (p = 0.02), indicating more opportunities for muscle relaxation during night shifts. Neck pain and mental well-being at work were similar between shifts. Subjective perception of burden was similar between shifts despite less physical burden at night, suggesting there are other contributing factors.  相似文献

The amount of sleep obtained between shifts is influenced by numerous factors including the length of work and rest periods, the timing of the rest period relative to the endogenous circadian cycle and personal choices about the use of non-work time. The current study utilised a real-world live-in mining environment to examine the amount of sleep obtained when access to normal domestic, family and social activities was restricted. Participants were 29 mining operators (26 male, average age 37.4 ± 6.8 years) who recorded sleep, work and fatigue information and wore an activity monitor for a cycle of seven day shifts and seven night shifts (both 12 h) followed by either seven or fourteen days off. During the two weeks of work participants lived on-site. Total sleep time was significantly less (p < 0.01) while on-site on both day (6.1 ± 1.0 h) and night shifts (5.7 ± 1.5 h) than days off (7.4 ± 1.4 h). Further, night shift sleep was significantly shorter than day-shift sleep (p < 0.01). Assessment of subjective fatigue ratings showed that the sleep associated with both days off and night shifts had a greater recovery value than sleep associated with day shifts (p < 0.01). While on-site, participants obtained only 6 h of sleep indicating that the absence of competing domestic, family and social activities did not convert to more sleep. Factors including shift start times and circadian influences appear to have been more important.  相似文献

The effects of three frequently rotating shifts in an irregular sequence on the daily activities of 239 Japanese female hospital nurses were studied by the time-budget method. The nurses recorded their daily activities for several consecutive days. The questionnaire was returned by 80·8% of the participants, and recordings of 1016 days were analysed. A two-way analysis of variance clarified that the shift combination influenced the daily activities. The most distinct result was that nurses spent significantly more time on free-time activities on the day when they worked the night shift followed by the evening shift than they did on the day when they worked any other shift combination. Nurses offset sleep deprivation either by sleeping during the day before and after working the night shift (82–100%) or by sleeping 2 to 4?h later in the morning after working the evening shift and on days off. There was a strong positive correlation between total sleep time (including day sleep) and the length of the interval between two consecutive shifts (r = 0·95, p < 0·001). This result suggests that more than 16 h between work shifts is required to allow more than 7?h of total sleep time. In an analysis by household status, nurses who had young children (average age, 2·8 years) slept less and spent less time on free-time activities than did other nurses.  相似文献

This study systematically tested whether the use of specific technologies or media (including certain types of Facebook use), technology-related anxieties, and technology-related attitudes (including multitasking preference) would predict clinical symptoms of six personality disorders (schizoid, narcissistic, antisocial, compulsive, paranoid and histrionic) and three mood disorders (major depression, dysthymia and bipolar-mania). In addition, the study examined the unique contributions of technology uses after factoring out demographics, anxiety and attitudes. Teens, young adults and adults (= 1143) completed an anonymous, online questionnaire that assessed these variables. Each disorder had a unique set of predictors with 17 of the 22 significant predictors being Facebook general use, impression management and friendship. More Facebook friends predicted more clinical symptoms of bipolar-mania, narcissism and histrionic personality disorder but fewer symptoms of dysthymia and schizoid personality disorder. Technology-related attitudes and anxieties significantly predicted clinical symptoms of the disorders. After factoring out attitudes and anxiety, Facebook and selected technology uses predicted clinical symptoms with Facebook use, impression management and friendship being the best predictors. The results showed both positive and negative aspects of technology including social media as well as apparently detrimental effects of a preference for multitasking.  相似文献

In a series of experimental shift work studies six subjects worked on continuous night shift for three weeks, four subjects worked on a 1-1-1 shift system (1st day morning shift, 2nd day afternoon shift, 3rd day night shift, 4th day off), and two subjects worked on an 2-2-2 shift system (the ‘metropolitan rota’). Rectal temperature was continuously recorded in each experiment.

The greatest changes in the circadian rhythm of body temperature occurred on the second night shift day, and during the first week of continuous night shift working. The changes involved both shifts in the phasing of the rhythm, and alterations in its form. The re-entrainment of the rhythm to its normal phasing took two or more days after two or more successive night shifts, but only one day after a single night shift. Considerable individual differences in the rhythm adjustment to night work were observed.

In a field validation of these findings, 34 shiftworkers in municipal gas and water supply undertakings measured their oral temperature every 2h both on and off duty. Although only very few temperature readings were obtained during sleep periods, the results confirmed, in general, those of the experimental studies.  相似文献

It is important for an occupational health service to plan health supervision and measures for shift and night workers considering the biorhythmic and psychosocial desynchronisation, as well as the frequent prevalence of combined effects of adverse environmental and working conditions. The measures taken should be preventive to reduce the expected health risks rather than being rehabilitative. Both a medical surveillance and a counselling service are recommended before and during engagement in shift and night work. Sleep, digestive, metabolic and cardiovascular troubles should be noted and followed up. Medical counselling is especially necessary in the first months of shift and night work exposure and then after long-term exposure. The postulate for timed surveillance and intervention is supported by data of our epidemiologic investigations. The importance of the single health measures is underlined by direct reference to the relevant literature. Recommendations that should be applied in all countries and enterprises are in accordance with the ILO Night Work Convention 1990a and include: (1) appropriate occupational health services provided for night and shift workers, including counselling; (2) first aid facilities during all shift hours; (3) the option of transfer to day work when certified unfit for night work for reasons of health; and (4) measures for women on night shifts, in particular special maternity protection (transfer to day work, social security benefits or an extension of maternity leave). Examples of occupational health services already installed in some states for shift and night workers, and information on future developments are given. Up to now the medical service has been implemented mostly on the basis of collective agreements rather than on the basis of legal provisions. The Austrian Night Shift/Heavy Work Law Regulations of 1981, revised 1993, are cited: workers exposed to night shifts under defined single or combined additional heavy workloads are entitled to a special health assessment, additional rest pauses, additional free time and early retirement depending on years of exposure.  相似文献

This study aimed to provide a comparative index of the performance impairment associated with the fatigue levels frequently experienced in workplaces that require night work. To do this, we equated fatigue-related impairment with the impairment resulting from varying levels of alcohol intoxication. Fifteen young individuals participated in two counterbalanced conditions which required them to (1) ‘work’ seven consecutive 8-h night shifts, and (2) consume an alcoholic beverage at hourly intervals until their blood alcohol concentration (BAC) reached 0.10%. In each condition, performance was measured at hourly intervals using a 10-min psychomotor vigilance task (PVT). Analysis indicated that as BAC increased, performance impairment significantly increased. Similarly, response times significantly increased during the first six simulated night-shifts, and lapse frequency significantly increased during the first two shifts. Equating the two conditions indicated that the first simulated night shift was associated with the greatest degree of performance impairment. In general, the impairment at the end of this shift was greater than that observed at a BAC of 0.10%. During the second and third simulated night shifts, the performance impairment was less than on the first night, but greater than that observed at a BAC of 0.05%. For the final four nights, the performance decrements generally did not exceed those observed at a BAC of 0.05%. This suggests that during a week of consecutive night shifts, adaptation of performance occurs.  相似文献

Abstract

A group of 33 controllers of an emergency service were studied before and after a change in shift roster. The original roster was the traditional weekly rotating type of three shifts, morning, afternoon and night in that direction, in which controllers worked seven consecutive shifts of the same type. This was changed to a rapidly rotating roster of shifts with no more than three consecutive night shifts. The direction of shift change remained the same. Sleep and meal diaries were kept by all controllers for 2 weeks before the roster change. Self-report measures were taken of health, social drug consumption and work variables, an anxiety inventory, the State-Train Anxiety Inventory and the Work Environment Scale were administered both before and 5 months after the roster change. Significant improvements were found after the shift roster change on almost all measures with the exception of self-reported nervousness and loss of appetite and a number of items in the Work Environment Scale. This finding provides some evidence from the field for the argument that rapidly rotating shifts may be the optimal form of shift system.  相似文献

Abstract

An ergometer for kayak paddlers has been developed and used for winter training, measurements of work capacity and maximal oxygen uptake ([Vdot]O2 max). Force is transmitted from the paddle by means of a wire connected to a flywheel mounted with six 9 × 9cm blades. Resistance, therefore, is based on wind turbulence generated by the flywheel. The mechanical efficiency of the ergometer at 63% (range 48-77) of [Vdot]O2 max was 17% (range 16-18) (n= 13). The [Vdot]O2 max was similar during bicycling (median 4·9; range 4·4-5·4l/min), arm cranking (median 4·8; range 4·3-5·11/min), on-water rowing in a kayak (median 4·7; range 4·0-4·91/min) and during rowing the kayak ergometer (median 4·8; range 4·3-5·21/min), (n = 6, p> 0·05). Work capacity during a 5 min ‘all-out’ test was 272 W (range 253–304 W) on the kayak ergometer (n = 17). The use of the ergometer for training helped to increase the aerobic power during arm exercise of Danish paddlers. Before introduction of the ergometer (February 1986), their VO2 max was 4·6 (range 3·8-5·2) 1/min while 12 months later, it was 50 (range 4·2–5·7) 1/min (n = 14, p < 0·01). The ergometer has thus been found.useful for training and evaluation of work capacity in kayak paddlers.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to examine a regular rotating 12-h shift system (2D2N4Off) at an Australian Smelter. Sleep behavior, subjective fatigue and neurobehavioral performance were investigated over a 14-day period for 20 employees. Activity monitors, sleep/wake diaries, and 5-min psychomotor vigilance tasks were used. Sleep data showed differences between day and night shifts. While sleep prior to night1 was increased relative to day shifts, a reduced sleep length carried into the period leading to night2. Total wakefulness at the end of shift, and subjective fatigue were increased for night shifts, particularly night1. Decrements in performance data supported these findings. Both prior wakefulness and prior sleep are important in a 12-h shift system. Employees may “sleep in” after day shifts, rather than taking extra sleep prior to night work. Thus, sleep between day and night shifts is based on recovery rather than preparation.  相似文献

Research suggests that less than 5 h sleep in the 24 h prior to work and/or more than 16 h of wakefulness can significantly increase the likelihood of fatigue-related impairment and error at work. Studies have also shown exponential safety declines with time on shift, with roughly double the likelihood of accident or injury after 10 h relative to the first 8 h. While it is acknowledged that reduced sleep, increased wakefulness and longer work hours produce work-related fatigue, few studies have examined the impact of workload on this relationship. Studies in the rail industry have focused on drivers. This study investigated fatigue in a large sample of Australian Rail Industry Employees. Participants were from four companies (n = 90: 85m, 5f; mean age 40.2 ± 8.6 y). Data was analysed for a total of 713 shifts. Subjects wore wrist actigraphs and completed sleep and work diaries for 14-days. They also completed the Samn–Perelli Fatigue Scale at the beginning and end of shifts, and the NASA-TLX workload scale at least twice during each shift. Average (±SD) sleep length (7.2 ± 2.6 h), prior wake at shift end (12.0 ± 4.7 h), shift duration (8.0 ± 1.3) and fatigue (4.1 ± 1.3, “a little tired, less than fresh”) were within limits generally considered acceptable from a fatigue perspective. However, participants received 5 h or less sleep in the prior 24 h on 13%, were awake for at least 16 h at the end of 16% and worked at least 10 h on 7% of shifts. Subjects reported that they felt “extremely tired, very difficult to concentrate,” or “completely exhausted, unable to function effectively” on 13% of shifts. Sleep length (OR = 0.88, p < 0.01), shift duration (OR = 1.18, p < 0.05), night shift (REF = morning shift, OR = 2.12, p < 0.05) and workload ratings (OR = 1.2, p < 0.05) were significant predictors of ratings of extreme tiredness/exhaustion (yes/no). While on average, sleep loss, extended wakefulness, longer work hours and work-related fatigue do not appear problematic in this sample, there is still a notable percentage of shifts that are likely to be associated with high levels of work-related fatigue. Given the size of the Australian Rail Industry, with thousands of shifts occurring each day, this is potentially of operational concern. Further, results indicate that, in addition to sleep length, wakefulness and work hours, workload significantly influences fatigue. This has possible implications for bio-mathematical predictions of fatigue and for fatigue management more generally.  相似文献

This study investigated the effects of a compressed working week with high cognitive and emotional work demands within the population of Dutch Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) pilots. Work stressors were measured and levels of well-being were examined before, during and after a series of day and night shifts. Results revealed that (i) the start of a series of day shifts was more taxing for well-being than the start of a series of night shifts, (ii) there were no differences in the decrease in well-being during day and night shifts, (iii) distress during shifts was more strongly related to a decrease in well-being during night than during day shifts and (iv) it took HEMS pilots more time to recover from a series of night shifts than from a series of day shifts. It is concluded that HEMS pilots should not start earlier during day shifts, nor have longer series of night shifts.  相似文献

This study aimed to assess fatigue among onshore oil rig shift workers in a petroleum company working in swing shifts. The work schedule consisted of 12 h of night shifts for one week followed by 12 h of day shifts for one week. Fatigue was assessed using both subjective and objective measurements which were visual analogue fatigue scale (VAFS) and simple reaction time (SRT) test, respectively. A total of 38 male onshore oil rig shift workers participated in this study. Fatigue assessment was conducted at the start and at the end of workdays on nights 1, 4 and 7, and days 1, 4 and 7. The results showed that there were significant differences of VAFS and SRT at the end of workdays, compared with at the start of workdays (p < 0.001). The fatigue level assessed by both SRT and VAFS was highest on the rotating day (p < 0.001). In conclusion, swing shifts might affect fatigue levels in shift workers. The fatigue level increased over the two-week work period. Further studies on fatigue assessment and management among onshore oil rig shift workers are still needed.  相似文献

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to determine to what extent operators carrying out repetitive machine-monitoring and feeding work can adapt their monitoring methods to the different production situations that they encounter, but also to the internal variations in their bodies during a 24-hour period. The activities of four log debarker operators were studied in a sawmill operating during the day and during the night (7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 5 a.m.). The glance axis direction was observed in three more or less conflictual production situations (total 16 shifts). The technical and time constraints leave the operators very little margin of manoeuvre, and in normal production situations very little difference is found in the monitoring methods within one shift and between the two shifts. However, changes are observed between the day and night shifts if the monitoring methods are compared during production situations that the operators find more difficult to manage. These results are not consistent with a decrease in activities. In fact, during the night, these operators use their capabilities to an even greater extent to monitor a more conflictual situation more thoroughly. This result can be explained by the changes in people's memory during the night, and by the lower threshold at which an operator decides that a situation is critical at night as compared to the daytime.  相似文献
