Phenology event responses, based on vegetation types, are strong indicators of climate variability and the ability of the vegetation to adapt to future climate changes. However, the sensitivity of phenology events to climate change along either environmental or vegetation type gradients is rarely examined. Phenological curves of major vegetation types along the North?South Transect of Eastern China (NSTEC) have been developed using wavelet and smooth-spline methods based on the normalized difference vegetation index from 1982 to 2006. Spatial?temporal patterns, trends of greenup-onset dates, dormancy dates, and growing season lengths (GSLs) during the period of 1982?2006 are presented.

The greenup-onset dates were most significantly and negatively related to the temperature in cold and humid areas, but insignificantly and positively in semi-arid regions. However, dormancy date showed a positive correlation with temperature. In populations of the same vegetation type, distributed along thermal gradients of NSTEC, the phenology sensitivities to warming were different. Greenup sensitivities of cold temperate coniferous forest (CTCF) and temperate meadow steppe (TMS) increased significantly from??6.0 to 0 days °C?1 (p < 0.001) and from about??2.0 to 2.0 days °C?1 (p < 0.001), respectively. In contrast, temperate grass steppe (TGS) and temperate deciduous shrubland (TDS) showed a decreased trend of greenup sensitivity from 2.0 to??4.0 days °C?1 (p < 0.001) and from 2.0 to??6.0 days °C?1 (p < 0.001), respectively. For the dormancy date sensitivity, CTCF showed a decreasing trend from about 6.0 to 0 days °C?1 (p < 0.001), and subtropical evergreen-broadleaved forest (SEBF) decreased from 5.0 to??5.0 days °C?1 (p < 0.05).  相似文献

A laboratory study was conducted to determine the effects of back disability status on endurance time and perceived discomfort during trunk flexion. Eighty participants (40 with chronic or recurrent low back pain (CRLBP), 40 pain-free) were tested. The trunk was flexed to 15°, 30°, 45° and 60° under three conditions: 1) continuous static flexion; 2) cyclical flexion with 20% rest; and 3) cyclical flexion with 40% rest. Each condition was performed for up to 600?s or until the participant reached his/her pain tolerance limit. Dependent variables included time to distracting discomfort (TDD), total endurance time (TET) and perceived discomfort. For continuous exertions, CRLBP participants had lower TDD (p?<?0.001), lower TET (p?<?0.001) and greater discomfort (p?<?0.001) compared to pain-free controls. In both groups, TDD and TET decreased and perceived discomfort increased as the flexion angle increased. For intermittent exertions, CRLBP participants reported greater discomfort than pain-free participants (p?<?0.001). Increasing rest from 20 to 40% reduced discomfort in CRLBP participants, but produced no consistent benefit in pain-free participants. To accommodate persons with CRLBP, consideration should be given to reducing both the magnitude (angle) and duration of trunk flexion required by their jobs.  相似文献

Objective: to compare the biomechanics and performance while using a vertical computer mouse (VM) and a standard mouse (SM). Methods: muscle activation (electromyography), forearm movements (electrogoniometers), performance (Fitts' Law test) and satisfaction (questionnaire) of 16 subjects were evaluated. Results: there were significant differences between the VM and the SM, respectively, on motion (28° vs. 42° pronation, p = 0.001; 5° ulnar vs. 7° radial deviation, p = 0.016) and muscle activity (13% vs. 16% of extensor carpi activity, p = 0.006; 10% vs. 13% extensor digitorum activity, p = 0.001). VM user satisfaction was good (68); however, time to target was longer (4.2 vs. 3.4 s, p < 0.001). Conclusions: using the VM decreased wrist pronation and lowered wrist extensor muscle activity, but additional training and familiarisation time may be required to improve user performance.

Practitioner Summary: Using a vertical mouse can decrease the exposure to biomechanical risk factors for computer mouse use-related musculoskeletal disorders. Using a vertical computer mouse resulted in less wrist pronation and lower wrist extensor muscle activity. But, training and familiarisation are required.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of abdominal hollowing (AH) on trunk muscle activation and lumbar-pelvic motion during a controlled lift and replace task. Surface electromyograms were recorded from five abdominal and two back muscle sites. Sagittal lumbar-pelvic motion was recorded by video. Subjects lifted a 3.8 kg load in normal, maximum and extreme reaches, first while performing their preferred lifting style (PLS) and then maintaining an AH technique. The external oblique muscle site activities were significantly higher (p < 0.05) for the AH technique (ranging from 7–20% of maximal voluntary activation (MVIC)) than at any of the abdominal sites for the PLS (ranging from 2–10% MVIC). Differences were found among abdominal sites for the AH, but not for the PLS. The back muscle site activities (ranging from 9–30% MVIC) were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than for any of the abdominal muscles for all conditions, except for the anterior external oblique for AH. The pelvic and lumbar angles changed significantly (p < 0.05) between normal and maximal reaches and between techniques. The AH technique altered abdominal muscle activation amplitudes, with minimal differences in trunk extensors compared to the PLS. The AH resulted in more posterior pelvic tilt.  相似文献

Abstract

Background: The purpose of this study was to determine which office chair feature is better at improving spine posture in sitting. Method: Participants (n = 28) were radiographed in standing, maximum flexion and seated in four chair conditions: control, lumbar support, seat pan tilt and backrest with scapular relief. Measures of lumbar lordosis, intervertebral joint angles and sacral tilt were compared between conditions and sex. Results: Sitting consisted of approximately 70% of maximum range of spine flexion. No differences in lumbar flexion were found between the chair features or control. Significantly more anterior pelvic rotation was found with the lumbar support (p = 0.0028) and seat pan tilt (p < 0.0001). Males had significantly more anterior pelvic rotation and extended intervertebral joint angles through L1–L3 in all conditions (p < 0.0001). Conclusion: No one feature was statistically superior with respect to minimising spine flexion, however, seat pan tilt resulted in significantly improved pelvic posture.

Practitioner Summary: Seat pan tilt, and to some extent lumbar supports, appear to improve seated postures. However, sitting, regardless of chair features used, still involves near end range flexion of the spine. This will increase stresses to the spine and could be a potential injury generator during prolonged seated exposures.  相似文献

Twenty-seven right-handed male university students participated in this study, which comprised a full factorial model consisting of three forearm rotation angles (60% prone and supine and neutral range of motion), three elbow angles (45°, 90° and 135°), three upper arm angles (45° flexion/extension and neutral), one exertion frequency (15 per min) and one level of pronation torque (20% maximum voluntary contraction (MVC) relative to MVC at each articulation). Discomfort rating after the end of each 5 min treatment was recorded on a visual analogue scale. Results of a repeated measures analysis of covariance on discomfort score, with torque endurance time as covariate, indicated that none of the factors was significant including torque endurance time (p = 0.153). An initial data collection phase preceded the main experiment in order to ensure that participants exerted exactly 20% MVC of the particular articulation. In this phase MVC pronation torque was measured at each articulation. The data revealed a significant forearm rotation angle effect (p = 0.001) and participant effect (p = 0.001). Of the two-way interactions, elbow?participant (p = 0.004), forearm?participant (p = 0.001) and upper arm?participant (p = 0.005) were the significant factors. Electromyographic activity of the pronator teres and biceps brachii muscles revealed no significant change in muscle activity in most of the articulations. Industrial jobs involving deviated upper arm postures are typical in industry but have a strong association with injury. Data from this study will enable better understanding of the effects of deviated upper arm postures on musculoskeletal disorders and can also be used to identify and control high-risk tasks in industry.  相似文献

The study evaluated the efficiency of two heat dissipation strategies under simulated desert patrol missions. Ten men participated in four trials, during which they walked on a treadmill (45°C, 20% relative humidity), carrying a load of 35 kg; two 50-min walks were separated by a 20-min rest. Cooling strategies, provided by an ambient air-ventilated vest (active cooling condition, AC), or water spraying of the skin during the rest (passive cooling condition, PC), in addition to reduced clothing and open zippers, were compared to conditions with full protective (FP) clothing and naked condition (NC). Skin temperature was higher during NC (37.9 ± 0.4°C; p < 0.001), and rectal temperature and heart rate were higher during FP (38.6 ± 0.4°C, p < 0.001 and 145 ± 12, p < 0.001, respectively), compared to other conditions. Four subjects terminated the trial prematurely due to signs of heat exhaustion in FP. Both cooling strategies substantially improved evaporative cooling.  相似文献

Military personnel are required to carry heavy loads whilst marching; this load carriage represents a substantial component of training and combat. Studies in the literature mainly concentrate on physiological effects, with few biomechanical studies of military load carriage systems (LCS). This study examines changes in gait and posture caused by increasing load carriage in military LCS. The four conditions used during this study were control (including rifle, boots and helmet carriage, totalling 8 kg), webbing (weighing 8 kg), backpack (24 kg) and a light antitank weapon (LAW; 10 kg), resulting in an incremental increase in load carried from 8, 16, 40 to 50 kg. A total of 20 male soldiers were evaluated in the sagittal plane using a 3-D motion analysis system. Measurements of ankle, knee, femur, trunk and craniovertebral angles and spatiotemporal parameters were made during self-paced walking. Results showed spatiotemporal changes were unrelated to angular changes, perhaps a consequence of military training. Knee and femur ranges of motion (control, 21.1° ± 3.0 and 33.9° ± 7.1 respectively) increased (p < 0.05) with load (LAW, 25.5° ± 2.3 and 37.8° ± 1.5 respectively). The trunk flexed significantly further forward, confirming results from previous studies. In addition, the craniovertebral angle decreased (p < 0.001) indicating a more forward position of the head with load. It is concluded that the head functions in concert with the trunk to counterbalance load. The higher muscular tensions necessary to sustain these changes have been associated with injury, muscle strain and joint problems.  相似文献

The effect of different handle angles on work distribution during hand cycling was determined. Able-bodied subjects performed hand cycling at 20% of maximum power level (mean (SD) power level: 90.0 (25.8) W) at a cadence of 70 rpm using handle angles of ±30°, ±15° and 0°. The handle angle had a significant effect on work during the pull down (p < 0.001) and lift up (p = 0.005) sector, whereby the highest work was performed with handle angles of +30° and ?15° respectively. The cycle sector had a significant effect on work (p < 0.001) and significantly (p = 0.002) higher work was performed in the pull down sector (25% higher than mean work over one cycle) as compared to the lift up sector (30% lower than mean work over one cycle). Therefore, a fixed handle angle of +30° is suggested to be optimal for power generation. The results of this study help to optimise the handbike–user interface. A more pronated handle angle compared to the one conventionally used was found to improve the performance of hand cycling and thereby the mobility of disabled people.  相似文献

The trunk is frequently modelled as one fixed segment ignoring possible multi-segmental contributions during manual handling. This study compared segmental trunk motion in a young and older population during a lifting task. Twelve elderly and 19 young subjects repeatedly lifted a 5 kg box from bench to shelf under two stance conditions. Displacement and angular trunk segment kinematics were recorded with an electromagnetic tracker system and then analysed. The elderly subjects displayed significantly increased pelvic and trunk displacement and significantly reduced pelvic and lower thorax (T10–L1) range of motion in both stance conditions. Upper thorax (C7–T10) motion was at times greater than lumbar motion and opposite to the lower segments and was related to the task while the lower segments contributed to both equilibrium and task requirements. Decreased segmental trunk angular kinematics may contribute to increased displacement kinematics and place the elderly at increased risk of injury and falling. The pelvis, lumbar spine, low thorax (T10–L1), upper thorax (C7–10) contributed uniquely and synchronously to trunk (C7–S2) mechanics during a lifting task. Reduced angular kinematics of the pelvis and low thorax contributed to increased displacement kinematics and hence increased the risk of falling in the elderly compared to the young. Investigations of trunk mechanics should include multi-segment analysis.  相似文献

Electrical screed levelling machines are developed to reduce kneeling and trunk flexion of sand–cement-bound screed floor layers. An observational intervention study among 10 floor layers was performed to assess the differences between a self-propelled and a manually moved machine. The outcome measures were work demands, production time, perceived load, discomfort and applicability. Compared to the self-propelled machine, the duration of kneeling (?13 min; p = 0.003) and trunk flexion (?12 min; p < 0.001) was shorter using the manually moved machine, and the duration of pushing and pulling increased (?39 min; p < 0.001). No significant or relevant differences were found for production time, perceived load and discomfort. Nine out of ten floor layers found the manually moved machine applicable and three out of ten found the self-propelled machine applicable. When compared with the traditional manner of floor laying, both electrical machines reduced the exposure towards kneeling and trunk flexion.

Practitioner Summary: Electrical machines may help to reduce high physical work demands on floor layers. A manually moved machine is better applicable for the installation of screed floors in residences with smaller floor areas. A self-propelled machine is better applicable on large floor areas with a minimum width of 4 m.  相似文献

Police officers spend large amounts of time performing duties within a police cruiser and report a high prevalence of musculoskeletal problems. This study evaluated the effects of driver seat and duty belt design on posture, pressure and discomfort. Ten male and 10 female university students attended two sessions involving simulated driving in a standard police seat (CV) and an active lumbar support (ALS) seat. Participants wore a full duty belt (FDB) or reduced duty belt (RDB) in each seat. Lumbar postures, driver-seat and driver-duty belt pressures and perceived discomfort were measured. Gender × Seat interactions were found for pelvic (p = 0.0001) and lumbar postures (p = 0.003). Females had more lumbar flexion than males and were more extended in the ALS seat (?9.8 ± 11.3°) than CV seat (?19.8 ± 9.6°). The FDB had greater seat pressure than the RDB (p < 0.0001), which corresponded to increased pelvis discomfort. This study supports the use of an ALS seat and RDB to reduce injury risk associated with prolonged sitting in police officers.

Practitioner Summary: Police officers report a high prevalence of musculoskeletal problems to the lower back, associated with prolonged driving and further investigation is needed to reduce injury risk. This simulated driving study investigated seat and duty belt configuration on biomechanical measures and discomfort. Seat design had the greatest impact, regardless of gender and males benefited more from a reduced belt configuration.  相似文献

Musculoskeletal injuries are reported as burdening the military. An identified risk factor for injury is carrying heavy loads; however, soldiers are also required to wear their load as body armour. To investigate the effects of body armour on trunk and hip kinematics during military-specific manual handling tasks, 16 males completed 3 tasks while wearing each of 4 body armour conditions plus a control. Three-dimensional motion analysis captured and quantified all kinematic data. Average trunk flexion for the weightiest armour type was higher compared with control during the carry component of the ammunition box lift (p?<?0.001) and sandbag lift tasks (p?<?0.001). Trunk rotation ROM was lower for all armour types compared with control during the ammunition box place component (p?<?0.001). The altered kinematics with body armour occurred independent of armour design. In order to optimise armour design, manufacturers need to work with end-users to explore how armour configurations interact with range of personal and situational factors in operationally relevant environments.

Practitioner Summary: Musculoskeletal injuries are reported as burdening the military and may relate to body armour wear. Body armour increased trunk flexion and reduced trunk rotation during military-specific lifting and carrying tasks. The altered kinematics may contribute to injury risk, but more research is required.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of an alternative welding system designed to reduce exposure to extreme trunk flexion on measures of trunk inclination and muscle activity. Among 10 participants, data were collected while using conventional stud welding equipment and while using the alternate system. Paired t-tests were used to compare results between the two welding systems. Mean trunk inclination angle was reduced with the alternate system (34.4° versus 9.7°, p < 0.01). Percent time with trunk inclination angles greater than 60° was also reduced (40.0% versus 4.7%, p < 0.01). In general, the alternate system resulted in less desirable upper trapezius muscle activity levels. The alternate system appears to be effective in reducing exposure to extreme trunk flexion among stud welders. Continued development of the system should explore features designed to reduce shoulder forces and improve productivity.  相似文献

The effects of employment duration and pain development on motor variability were investigated during repetitive work. Electromyographic (EMG) and kinematics data from two previous studies were re-analysed. Newly employed butchers were followed prospectively in relation to employment duration and pain development. Healthy butchers with long-term experience were compared with novices. The variability of the cycle time, EMG ratio and arm and trunk movement was expressed as cycle-to-cycle standard deviations. During the first 6 months of employment, cycle time variability decreased, while posture and movement variability increased (p < 0.05). In presence of pain, the variability of the initial arm position decreased while it increased for the trunk (p < 0.05). Experienced butchers showed a larger variability than novices for work cycle and several kinematic variables, but a smaller EMG ratio variability (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that the variability of motor patterns in repetitive work changes with experience and pain. A change towards a more variable motor strategy may protect workers from work-related musculoskeletal disorders.  相似文献

It is useful to have a disaggregated population database at uniform grid units in disaster situations. This study presents a method for settlement location probability and population density estimations at a 90 m resolution for northern Iraq using the Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM) digital terrain model and Landsat Enhanced Thematic Mapper satellite imagery. A spatial model each for calculating the probability of settlement location and for estimating population density is described. A randomly selected subset of field data (equivalent to 50%) is first analysed for statistical links between settlement location probability and population density; and various biophysical features which are extracted from Landsat or SRTM data. The model is calibrated using this subset. Settlement location probability is attributed to the distance from roads and water bodies and land cover. Population density can be estimated based upon land cover and topographic features. The Landsat data are processed using a segmentation and subsequent feature–based classification approach making this method robust to seasonal variations in imagery and therefore applicable to a time series of images regardless of acquisition date. The second half of the field data is used to validate the model. Results show a reasonable estimate of population numbers (r = 0.205, p<0.001) for both rural and urban settlements. Although there is a strong overall correlation between the results of this and the LandScan model (r = 0.464, p<0.001), this method performs better than the 1 km resolution LandScan grid for settlements with fewer than 1000 people, but is less accurate for estimating population numbers in urban areas (LandScan rural r = 0.181, p<0.001; LandScan urban r = 0.303, p<0.001). The correlation between true urban population numbers is superior to that of LandScan however when the 90 m grid values are summed using a filter which corresponds to the LandScan spatial resolution (r = 0.318, p<0.001).  相似文献

This cross-sectional study aimed to identify gender differences in the cervical postures when young adults were using mobile phones, as well as the correlations between the postures and the digital devices use (computer and mobile phone). Questionnaires regarding the habits of computer and mobile phone use were administrated to 429 subjects aged from 17 to 33 years old (19.75 ± 2.58 years old). Subjects were instructed to stand habitually and use a mobile phone as in daily life; the sagittal head and cervical postures were measured by head flexion, neck flexion angle and gaze angle. Male participants had a significantly larger head flexion angle (96.41° ± 12.23° vs. 93.57° ± 12.62°, p = 0.018) and neck flexion angle (51.92° ± 9.55° vs. 47.09° ± 9.45°, p < 0.001) than females. There were significant differences in head (F = 3.62, p = 0.014) and neck flexion (F = 3.99, p = 0.009) between different amounts of computer use.

Practitioner Summary: We investigated possible gender differences in head and neck postures of young adults using mobile phones, as well as the potential correlations between these postures and digital device use. We found that males displayed larger head and neck flexion angles than females, which were associated with the amount of computer use.  相似文献

This study compared three-dimensional trunk and pelvis range of motion (ROM) during a sustained asymmetric box lift/lower task between a group with a history of low back pain (HBP, n = 9) and a group with no history of low back pain (NBP, n = 9). Participants lifted an 11-kg box for 10 min at 12 cycles/min from ankle height in front to shelves 45 deg off-centre at waist height. Kinematic data were collected at the beginning (min1), middle (min5) and end of the bout (min9). Two-way analyses of variance were performed for all variables. Pelvis and trunk transverse ROM were similar at min1. By min9, HBP group did not change (31.9 ± 9 deg); however, ROM decreased in NBP group (21.6 ± 6 deg, p < 0.05). Therefore, despite no current pain, the HBP group demonstrated protective lifting mechanics compared to controls. Also discussed are implications for studying lifting paradigms at sub-maximal effort over longer periods of time.

Practitioner summary: Differences between groups over time demonstrate residual consequences of low back pain (LBP) in a manual materials handling scenario. Individuals with a history of LBP (pain free for 6 months) demonstrated more conservative lifting mechanics towards the end of the bout compared to controls with no history of LBP.  相似文献
