The additivity of strengths for teams of two and three untrained female subjects in eam-work was evaluated in static (isometric) and dynamic (isokinetic) terms. Eight healthy college students were tested under laboratory conditions. Four standard values were used to evaluate isometric strengths: arm, leg, stooped back, and composite measures. The isokinetic strength was tested by means of dynamic lift strength and dynamic back extension. Following individual measurement of the subjects, they were tested in two-member and three-member teams. Two-female teams w«re evaluated in terms of 28 combinations for each of the six measures; the three-female teams were tested in 56 combinations among the subjects. With the exception of isometric arm strength, the actual team strengths were significantly lower then the corresponding sums of the team-members' individual strengths. On average, the isometric back, leg and composite strengths were approximately 83·3% for the two-female teams, and 83·9% for the three-female teams. The isokinetic strengths for two-female and three-female teams accounted for about 68·0% and 68·4% of the sums, respectively. These results indicate that lifting strength of females in team-work is generally not additive and depends upon the muscle group in use, and suggests that lifting capacity in team-work will be reduced as the number of team members increases.  相似文献

When lifting loads and working in a forward stooped position, the muscles of the back rather than the ligaments and bony structures of the spine should overcome the gravitational forces. Formulae, based on measurements of back muscle strength, for prediction of maximal loads to be lifted, and for the ability to sustain work in a stooped position, have been worked out and tested in practical situations. From tests with 50 male and female subjects the simplest prediction formulae for maximum loads were: max. load = 1.10 x isometric back muscle strength for men; and max. load = 0.95 x isometric back muscle strength - 8 kg for women. Some standard values for maximum lifts and permissible single and repeated lifts have been calculated for men and women separately and are given in Table 1. From tests with 65 rehabilitees it was found that the maximum isometric strength of the back muscles measured at shoulder height should exceed 2/3 of the body weight, if fatigue and/or pain in the back muscles is to be avoided during work in a standing stooped position.  相似文献

Chronic low back pain (CLBP) is the leading cause of absenteeism from the workplace and research into exercise interventions to address this problem is required. This study investigated training frequency for participants with CLBP. Participants either trained once a week (1 × week, n = 31), or twice a week (2 × week, n = 20) or did not (control group, n = 21). Participants were isometric strength tested in weeks 1 and 12 and trained dynamically either 1×week (80% of maximum) or 2×week (80% and 50%). The results (pre vs. post) showed significant increases in maximal strength, range of motion and reductions in pain for both training groups. Pain scores for the 1 × week and 2 × week both reached minimal clinical improvement change unlike the control group. Thus, one lumbar extension training session per week is sufficient for strength gains and reductions in pain in low back pain in CLBP patients. PRACTITIONER SUMMARY: CLBP is the leading cause of absenteeism from the workplace. The present study using a modified randomised control trial design investigated exercise training frequency for participants with CLBP. One lumbar extension training session per week is sufficient for strength gains and reductions in low back pain in CLBP patients.  相似文献

In addition to the standard medical examination, a back and lift test has been introduced in the hiring of new employees. 100 men have been tested to date. Only people with no history of back trouble were tested. Body height and weight were measured and the isometric capacity of the back extensors and the strength of abdominal musculature were measured with a Darcus dynamometer. A series of lifts with gradually increasing weight were performed in order to find the subject's 'acceptable weight'. The correlation coefficients for these different test variables was consistently poor, and thus it is not possible to predict a person's true lifting capacity from knowledge of muscle strength, height and body weight. The subjects stood upon a force plate during the lifts, which recorded the vertical and horizontal forces, and the force of inertia exerted by the subject during the lift could be calculated. The activity in the back extensors, rectus abdominis and external oblique muscle was recorded. The flexibility of the lumbar spine was calculated.  相似文献

The maximum isometric strength of cervical extensors was measured in a group of sixteen young healthy subjects. The cross-sectional area was obtained by computerized tomography. A significant positive correlation was found between muscle strength and cross-sectional area. The ratio of strength to cross-sectional area is 10.17N/cm2. This value is similar to that estimated on the quadriceps using similar methods in other studies. Numerous factors are suggested to explain the individual variability of the results even within a homogeneous group; among them, neck morphology is important.  相似文献

The effects of seven weeks of eccentric or concentric muscle conditioning on muscle tension and. integrated electrical activity (IEMG) were investigated on human subjects by using a special electrical dynamometer as a testing and training apparatus. The eccentric conditioning caused, on the average, a greater improvement in muscle tension than did the concentric conditioning. In early conditioning those in the eccentric group experienced soreness in their exercised muscles. This caused a concomitant drop in maximum strength. After the disappearance of pain symptoms, ability to develop tension increased in a linear fashion. Neither method was able to cause statistically significant changes in the maximum IEMG associated with any type of muscle contraction. The regression lino expressing the relationship between IEMG ( μ.v. per sec.) and isometric tension (in percent of maximal voluntary contraction) was parabolic. In this relationship muscle conditioning failed to cause any significant changes in IEMG per unit of tension. Although the IEMG changes due to conditioning were somewhat different in the two experimental groups, it could not be established that either type of conditioning caused increase in the desynchronized firing of motor units.  相似文献

Twenty male college students served as subjects for lhe study which investigated the relationship between maximum isometric strength and the isometric tension necessary to produce total occlusion of intramuscular circulation. Subjects performed a scries of progressively increasing static contractions by squeezing a hand dynamometer and the subsequent blood flow responses were measured. Blood flow was occluded at a mean of 63-5% maximum handgrip strength for the total group tested. To determine whether individuals of different maximum strength occlude at different percentages of their MVC, subjects were divided into high and low strength groups. The high strength group was found to occlude at 51-5% of MVC while the low strength group occluded at 75-5% of MVC. A significant negative correlation (r= -0.58) was found between maximum isometric strength and the per cent of maximum strength necessary to produce intra-muscular occlusion. There was no significant difference between the absolute tension producing occlusion in the high strength group (34-8 kg) and that of the low strength group (34 3 kg).  相似文献

The main purpose of this study was to ascertain musculoskeletal and cardiovascular capacity among ageing employees in relation to workload over a period of 16 years. The data were obtained by physical capacity tests and ratings of perceived exertion (RPE) during working day. The study group consisted of 89 subjects, who were all employed in the municipal branch and were on average 51.9 years old at the beginning of the follow-up period in 1981 and 67.3 years in 1997, when the most of the subjects had retired (with only two subjects still working). During the 16-year follow-up period, age-related decline in physical capacity was observed. Nevertheless the improvement in flexibility of spine and in isometric trunk muscle strength compared with the same age subjects was more common among the subjects with high workload than among the subjects with low workload. However, among the subjects with high workload, physical capacity was poorer than among the subjects with low workload, especially among the women. The results suggest the conclusion that there are differences in workers' physical capacity in relation to their perceived workload during working life. These differences remained when the subjects had retired. Interestingly, those who had high workload had lower muscle strength than those who had low workload. This may indicate that high physical workload does not have any training effect on the muscle strength of ageing workers.  相似文献

The rating of acceptable load (RAL) attained with a standard test (RALSt) and a wrk-simulating test (RALW) for postal parcel sorting was related to anthropometric, muscle strength, and spinal mobility characteristics of 18 male sorters. The subjects comprised a subsample of 103 experienced male sorters who carried out the RAL tests at postal sorting centres. The dynamic hand-grip endurance correlated significantly (p = 0.036) to the RALSt results. Correspondingly, there was a significant correlation (p = 0.044) between the ratio of maximal isometric strength of trunk extension to body weight and the RALW. The dynamic hand-grip endurance predicted 26% of the variation in the RALSt; in the RALW the maximal isometric strength of trunk flexion to body weight ratio predicted 24%. The subjects who rated heavier weights for RALSt tended to have a better trunk mobility. The dynamic endurance of hand-grip muscles, trunk strength, and spinal flexibility seemed to be the most powerful predictors for the psychophysically assessed 'acceptable loads' in experienced workers performing manual materials handling tasks.  相似文献

The hamstrings:quadriceps muscle strength ratio has been used as an indicator of normal balance between the knee flexors and extensors. A more functional approach to this strength ratio would be to compare opposite muscle actions of antagonistic muscle groups. The dynamic strength control ratio (DSCR) should give a more appropriate measure relating to knee function. There is a lack of normative data relating to DSCR for anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) deficient subjects. Effects of ACL deficiency on isokinetic peak torque for eccentric and concentric muscle actions of the quadriceps and hamstrings, in conjunction with isometric peak torque, were examined in 10 patients awaiting reconstructive surgery (male = 8, female = 2 ; age = 32.8 +/- 8.3 years; height = 1.77 +/- 0.08 m; mass = 72.1 +/- 12.5 kg). These variables were assessed using an isokinetic dynamometer. The results were considered in terms of the conventional ratio and DSCR. Anterior tibial drawer was measured using a knee ligament arthrometer to confirm clinical diagnosis of ACL rupture. The isokinetic peak torque data analysed were for angular velocities of 1.05 rad s(-1) (60 degrees s(-1)). Significant strength deficits were apparent between normal and injured sides for: concentric isokinetic quadriceps action (p < 0.05); isometric quadriceps action at 70 degrees of knee flexion (p < 0.05); isometric quadriceps action at 40 degrees of knee flexion (p<0.01); eccentric isokinetic hamstrings action (p < 0.05). With bilateral comparison, the conventional strength ratios showed no significant difference, as did the DSCR. The bilateral comparison of isometric strength ratios revealed significant losses in quadriceps strength for the injured side (p < 0.05) but no significant losses in hamstring strength (p > 0.05). Thus, differences can be seen in conventional ratios and DSCR for ACL-deficient subjects. This is an area of clinical interest with the increasing frequency of ACL reconstruction using hamstrings tendons.  相似文献

Many baristas complain of low back pain (LBP) and upper extremity discomfort while at work. This study documented the prevalence of LBP and shoulder pain, via questionnaire, among a population of baristas to determine whether cumulative low back loads and shoulder moments are associated with pain reporting. Fifty-nine baristas completed the questionnaire; ten were also video-recorded for biomechanical analysis while making espresso beverages and cumulative and peak low back loads and shoulder moments were calculated. Seventy-three percent of those who completed the questionnaire reported having experienced LBP, and half attributed this pain to their job as a barista. Furthermore, 68% reported having experienced shoulder pain and half also attributed this pain to their job. Those who suffered from LBP had higher peak low back compression and those with shoulder pain had, in general, higher moments about their dominant shoulder.  相似文献

Owing to the recent interest in torso stabilization exercises together with many questions regarding the duration of prolonged isometric holds in occupational settings, the authors attempted to assess the level of back muscle oxygenation during prolonged isometric contractions. Specifically, this study recorded relative oxygen saturation of haemoglobin/myoglobin using Near Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) in the L3 erector mass during prolonged isometric contractions at intensities from 2 to 30% of maximum voluntary contraction (MVC). It was hypothesized that available oxygen to these muscles is severely compromised even at moderate levels of activation observed in occupational work. Eight volunteers without a history of lower back pain or injury participated in this study. The exercise task involved isometric contraction of the lower erector spinae at five different levels of each subject's maximal voluntary contraction: 2, 5, 10, 20 and 30% MVC, presented in random order. Subjects were placed in a sitting position, with a curved plastic plate secured horizontally to the pelvis to minimize movement at the hip joint. During extensor exertions, they were restrained with a harness that was attached at chest level to a load cell. Each isometric contraction was performed for 30 s followed by 1 min of rest. All levels of contraction demonstrated reduction in oxygen. Given the concern for motion artefact on the NIRS signal, sham trials were conducted where the subjects went through the procedure of attaching the pulling cable but no active pull was performed. These trials showed no change in the NIRS signal. At this time NIRS appears to be the only non-invasive instrumentation available to indicate total available muscle oxygen during low level, prolonged work. Although the specific tissue volume sampled by NIRS cannot be positively identified, it appears that tissue oxygenation in the lumbar extensor musculature is reduced as a function of contraction intensity, even at levels as low as 2% of MVC. These data have implications for prolonged work where postures requiring isometric contractions are sometimes held for hours, and where musculoskeletal illness has been linked to prolonged contraction levels above 2%MVC--these data suggest a possible biological pathway.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to identify major occupational factors that were significantly correlated with back pain in pregnant women working in higher education, health care and service areas. A total of 73 working pregnant women were surveyed using questionnaires specifically designed for evaluating correlations between occupational factors and severity of back pain; 37 women were interviewed at both 20 and 34 weeks of pregnancy, 17 at 20 weeks only, and 19 were interviewed at 34 weeks only. “Rest breaks allowed” and “job autonomy” were negatively correlated with severity of back pain at 20 weeks of pregnancy. “Staying in a confined area” and “having restricted space” were positively correlated with severity of back pain at 34 weeks of pregnancy. The study suggests that allowing pregnant women to take more rest breaks and to have more job autonomy may reduce the severity of back pain during early pregnancy, and that allowing movement outside the working area and providing less restricted space may reduce back pain during late pregnancy.  相似文献

Fourteen male and eight female volunteers served as subjects in these experiments lo determine the effect of hand tool dimensions on isometric strength, endurance, the surface EMG above the active muscle, and the cardiovascular responses to isometric exercise. As reported by others, we found that for each individual, there existed one handgrip size at which he or she could exert the greatest isometric strength. Endurance was the same at any work load relative to the maximum strength for a given grip dimension. The EMG and blood pressure responses to isometric exercise were the same at any given grip span: however, the heart rate response was lowest when subjects worked with their muscles at the optimal grip span.  相似文献

Lumbar muscle fatigue is a potential risk factor for the development of low back pain. In this study, we investigated the influence of lumbar extensor muscle fatigue on lumbar–pelvic coordination patterns during weightlifting. Each of the 15 male subjects performed five repetitions of weightlifting tasks both before and after a lumbar extensor muscle fatiguing protocol. Lumbar muscle electromyography was collected to assess fatigue. Trunk kinematics was recorded to calculate lumbar–pelvic continuous relative phase (CRP) and CRP variability. Results showed that fatigue significantly reduced the average lumbar–pelvic CRP value (from 0.33 to 0.29 rad) during weightlifting. The average CRP variability reduced from 0.17 to 0.15 rad, yet this change ws statistically not significant. Further analyses also discovered elevated spinal loading during weightlifting after the development of lumbar extensor muscle fatigue. Our results suggest that frequently experienced lumbar extensor muscle fatigue should be avoided in an occupational environment.

Practitioner Summary: Lumbar extensor muscle fatigue generates more in-phase lumbar–pelvic coordination patterns and elevated spinal loading during lifting. Such increase in spinal loading may indicate higher risk of back injury. Our results suggest that frequently experienced lumbar muscle fatigue should be avoided to reduce the risk of LBP.  相似文献

Accurate and reliable low back morphological data such as the cross-sectional area (CSA) of the erector spinae muscle (ESM) is vital for biomechanical modeling of the lumbar spine to estimate spinal loading and enhance the understanding of injury mechanisms. The objective of the present study is to enhance the current database regarding ESM sizes by studying with larger sample sizes, collecting data from live subjects, using high resolution MRI scans, using computerized, reliable, and repeatable measurement techniques, and analyzing data from three inter-vertebral disc (IVD) levels for both genders. A total of 163 subjects (82 males and 81 females) were included in the study. CSAs of both right and left ESMs were measured from axial-oblique MRI scans using architectural design software. The average CSA of the ESM was 23.50, 24.22, and 24.33 cm2 for females and 30.00, 28.28, and 24.60 cm2 for males at the L3/L4, L4/L5, and L5/S1 levels, respectively. Results agree with some studies, but generally larger than most previous studies, possibly due to differences in sampling (sample size, subject characteristics: age, anthropometrics, cadavers, etc.), measurement techniques (scanning technology, scanning plane, scanning posture, different IVD levels), or muscle definitions.Relevance to industryLifting tasks are very common in occupational settings and associated with low back pain. Accurate and reliable low back muscle size data is of importance to produce more efficient low back biomechanical models to better understand the loading mechanism in lifting tasks and to minimize low back pain risk regarding the lifting task. However, available low back muscle size data are quite limited. This study fills part of this gap by providing data from a large sample population of live subjects, multiple levels, both genders, high resolution MRI scans, reliable and repeatable measurement technique. The updated low back muscle size data presented in this paper can be used by biomechanical modelers to improve current low back biomechanical models.  相似文献
