On the outstanding elements and record values in the exponential and gamma populations

Summary Outstanding elements and record values are discussed in this paper as related to exponential and gamma populations. First, the problem of prediction is considered when there are available,k sets of independent observations from a general-type exponential distribution. In such a case, prediction of then _k -th record value in thek-th set is made in terms ofn _i -th (i=1, …,k−1) record values from other (k−1) sets. For this purpose a predictive distribution is obtained. Secondly, the distribution of the sum of record values as well as that of a linear combination of record values are obtained for the exponential case. Probability integrals of the sum of record values and the probability integral of the sum of outstanding, elements are suggested for all values. Then, the distribution of then-th record values in a gamma population is put in a closed form. Further, the distribution of the linear combination of the spacings of outstanding elements as well as that of the linear combination of outstanding elements themselves are obtained. Finally the distribution of a ratio of two record values is obtained.     

Work-related traffic crashes: a record linkage study

AIM: To examine the characteristics of work-related traffic crashes involving drivers in New South Wales (NSW), Australia. METHODS: Probabilistic data record linkage were used to merge police crash records and workers compensation data for the period 1998-2002. RESULTS: The record linkage identified 13,124 drivers who were injured or died as a result of work-related traffic crash in New South Wales over the 5-year period. Approximately three quarters of driver casualties occurred during commuting (74.8%) with the rest occurring in the course of work. Male drivers made up around three quarters of these crashes and 93% of those that resulted in a fatality. Transport workers were the most frequent victims of work-related crashes while on duty (20.8%), with drivers of heavy trucks representing about half (48%) of all fatalities resulting from on duty work-related crashes. Nearly 1 in 6 male drivers were speeding at the time of the crash (15%, 95% CI 14.2-15.7) compared to less than 1 in 10 female drivers (9%, 95% CI 8.3-9.8) of female drivers. Male drivers were also significantly more likely to be fatigued at the time of the crash 7.6% (95% CI 7.0-8.2) compared to females 4.2% (95% CI 3.7-4.8). No significant difference was observed in the proportion of crashes involving fatigue between on duty and commuting traffic crashes. CONCLUSIONS: The study demonstrates the value of record linkage techniques in addressing some of the limitations of work-related data systems and in providing a more complete picture of the circumstances of occupational road crashes.

The Graduate Record Examination and Success in an Engineering Management Program: A Case Study

Abstract:

The authors consider the empirical validity of the graduate record examination (GRE) as a predictor of various measures of performance in a graduate engineering management program. The performance criteria include first-quarter graduate school grades, first-year graduate school grades, cumulative graduate school grades, and faculty committees' ratings of students' theses. Tests indicated that the GRE verbal and quantitative test scores were useful in predicting first-year and cumulative grade point averages (GPAs). The implications of these findings are discussed to include the idea of a theory-based test and measures of graduate student performance.     

Maximum likelihood estimation from record-breaking data for the weibull distribution

In destructive stress testing, industrial quality control, or other situations, data may consist only of record setting values, such as successive values that are smaller than all previous ones observed. Here, for a two-parameter Weibull distribution, the performance of the maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs) from record-breaking data is studied by computer simulations. Comparison of the biases and mean squared errors of these estimators with those of the MLEs for complete samples from the Weibull distribution is discussed and some examples are presented.     

Mapping quality assurance systems: A methodology

This paper reports on a method (quality management activity planning—Q-MAP) for mapping quality assurance procedures, information flows and responsibilities. A comparison is made of the ICAM definition (IDEF) method and Q-MAP as to their suitability for mapping quality assurance systems and fostering the advancement of the quality improvement process. The achievements arising from the use of Q-MAP at Garrett Automotive Limited are examined. It is pointed out that the involvement of employees in the preparation of Q-MAP diagrams has led to improvements in processes and procedures by eliminating differences between actual and documented work practices and that a wider cross-section of employees are now familiar with the company's quality assurance system.

Digital Continuity Guarantee Approach of Electronic Record Based on Data Quality Theory

Since the British National Archive put forward the concept of the digital continuity in 2007, several developed countries have worked out their digital continuity action plan. However, the technologies of the digital continuity guarantee are still lacked. At first, this paper analyzes the requirements of digital continuity guarantee for electronic record based on data quality theory, then points out the necessity of data quality guarantee for electronic record. Moreover, we convert the digital continuity guarantee of electronic record to ensure the consistency, completeness and timeliness of electronic record, and construct the first technology framework of the digital continuity guarantee for electronic record. Finally, the temporal functional dependencies technology is utilized to build the first integration method to insure the consistency, completeness and timeliness of electronic record.
