Corroboration.

Corroborates the finding by R. W. Robins et al (see record 1999-00297-003) that sometime in the 1970's the prominence of behavioral psychology gave way to the ascension of cognitive psychology. In the author's own analysis of the presidential addresses of the American Psychological Association over a much broader period, it was found that in the 1970's the concept of psychological data as behavior (contentual objectivism) was superseded by the concept of psychological data as a mental structure or activity of the individual (contentual subjectivism). The federal role in injury control.

Early federal injury control programs in the 1960s and 1970s were centered first in the Division of Accident Prevention (Public Health Service) and subsequently in the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (Department of Transportation) and the Consumer Product Safety Commission. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) in the early 1970s also began to investigate injuries, particularly in the home and recreational environment. The field expanded in the 1970s and 1980s to include injuries that occur in many settings and both intentional injuries (violence) and unintentional injuries. After a 1985 report, Injury in America, CDC was chosen to be the national coordinating agency because of its mission of prevention. Topics generally addressed scientific and professional matters, although there was a trend from almost exclusive focus on nonsocietal topics in the 1950s to a greater concern for societal problems in the 1970s. Even with this increased responsiveness to societal issues, the predominant interest of APA members is defined in scientific and professional terms. Richardson Creativity Award: 1970.

At the Annual Meeting of the American Psychological Association (APA) in Washington, D. C., on September 5, 1970, the APA announced the recipient of the Richardson Creativity Award, established by the Richardson Foundation in 1965. The award is given for "the most outstanding contribution during the preceding year or recent years toward improving creative and innovative talents or developing or utilizing such talents." Surveyed individuals at 100 medical schools concerning academic and clinical training for psychologists in pediatric facilities during 1970–1971 as a follow-up to a survey by D. K. Routh (1970). There was an increase in the number of pediatric departments and associated facilities that were the site of some type of psychological training. Validity data on a modified version of Pearson's Novelty Experiencing Scale.

Describes the validation of a modified version of Pearson's (1970) Novelty Experiencing Scale, using 232 female and 198 male 12th graders. Measures of external sensation-seeking, internal cognitive experience-seeking, internal sensation-seeking, and external cognitive experience-seeking all proved reliable, and factorially homogeneous. Intercorrelations among the measures, and correlations against Pearson's Desire-for-Novelty Scale resembled previous findings by P. H. American psychology in the sixties.

"I have arrived at an anticipated APA membership in 1970 between 30,000 and 33,000… . (It seems probable that APA will stabilize at about 30,000 members… . It is estimated that some 1200 APA members (6% of present total membership) are in full-time private practice in clinical psychology. Characteristics of graduate training programs in school psychology.

Surveyed 112 graduate programs in school psychology during the 1969-1970 academic year. Comparison with data obtained from 1967-1969 shows that the number of training programs in school psycholgy increased by about 29%, the student population doubled, and the number of graduates tripled. Training standards improved, as evidenced by increases in (a) the number of credit-hours required for the master's degree, (b) the percentage of intermediate degrees offered, and (c) the proportion of students in post-master's-degree programs.
