This study investigates the effect of the thiol‐ene click reaction on thermal conductivity and shear strength of the epoxy composites reinforced by various silane‐functionalized hybrids of sulfhydryl‐grafted multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (SH‐MWCNTs) and vinyl‐grafted MWCNTs (CC‐MWCNTs). The results of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) show that the sulfhydryl groups and vinyl groups are successfully grafted onto the surface of MWCNTs, after treatment of MWCNT with triethoxyvinylsilane and 3‐mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), HotDisk thermal constant analyzer (HotDisk), optical microscope, and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) are used to characterize the resultant composites. It is demonstrated that the hybrid of 75 wt % SH‐MWCNTs and 25 wt % CC‐MWCNTs has better dispersion and stability in epoxy matrix, and shows a stronger synergistic effect in improving the thermal conductivity of epoxy composite via the thiol‐ene click reaction with 2,2′‐azobis(2‐methylpropionitrile) as thermal initiator. Furthermore, the tensile shear strength results of MWCNT/epoxy composites and the optical microscopy photographs of shear failure section indicate that the composite with the hybrid MWCNTs has higher shear strength than that with raw MWCNTs. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The uniform dispersion of carbon nanotubes in epoxy resin is one of the key factors to achieve the composites with desirable mechanical and physical property enforcement. However, the widely used dispersion methods have their own respective limitations in pursuing satisfactory nanotube dispersion. Herein, a new dispersion approach, based on the synergetic effect of combining high speed internal mixing with running simultaneously continuous ultrasonication treatment, has been proposed. The dispersion of nanotubes was carried out in a high speed internal mixer, consisting of twin kneading block structured rotors and an integrated ultrasonic horn, which was intercalated into the central position between the twin rotors. At first, the FEM simulation was conducted to optimize the kneading element assembly and illuminate the geometry influence of the ultrasonic horn intercalation on the mixing flow. Afterwards, to confirm the feasibility of the approach, pristine MWCNTs (P‐CNTs), oxidation modified MWCNTs (M‐CNTs) and M‐CNTs/multilayer graphene nanoplatelets (MGPs) hybrid are dispersed into epoxy resin. The dispersion of each sample in its liquid epoxy state is investigated under transparent optical microscopy. More characterizations, including SEM, TG/DTA, tensile test, and thermal conductivity measurements, were conducted on the cured composites. Competitive reinforcements on mechanical tensile property and thermal conductivity were observed. Especially, at a 1.5 wt% M‐CNTs/MGPs hybrid content, the composite mechanical tensile strength and thermal conductivity were 47% and 30% higher than those of neat epoxy. This preliminary study demonstrates the feasibility and practicability of the proposed approach to achieving good MWCNTs dispersion and distribution in epoxy resin. POLYM. Multi‐walled carbon nanotubes/carbon fiber (MWCNTs/CF) hybrid fillers are employed to prepare MWCNTs/CF/epoxy composites. Results reveal that a great improvement of the thermal conductivities of the epoxy composites with the addition of MWCNTs/CF hybrid fillers, and the thermal conductivity of the MWCNTs/CF/epoxy composites is 1.426 W/mK with 8 vol% treated MWCNTs/CF hybrid fillers (5 vol% MWCNTs + 3 vol% CF). Both the flexural and impact strength of the MWCNTs/CF/epoxy composites are increased firstly, but decreased with the excessive addition of MWCNTs. The flexural and impact strength of the MWCNTs/epoxy composites are optimal with 2 vol% MWCNTs. For a given MWCNTs/CF hybrid fillers loading, the surface treatment of MWCNTs/CF hybrid fillers can further increase the thermal conductivities and mechanical properties of the MWCNTs/CF/epoxy composites. We prepared macromer-grafted polymers (MGPs) containing suitable polymer side chains for improving solubility and pyrene units for improving adsorption on multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) surfaces, and demonstrated that these MGPs act as MWCNT solubilizers that improve solubility of MWCNTs in typically poor solvents such as alkanes and that improve flowability of polymer/MWCNT composites. The polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS)-MGPs, synthesized using PDMS macromers and pyrene-containing monomers, improved solubility of MWCNTs not only in chloroform but also in hexane, which is a poor solvent for MWCNTs. Moreover, the addition of PDMS-MGP-adsorbed MWCNTs (MWCNT/PDMS-MGPs) to epoxy resin monomers or polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) drastically reduced the viscosity of the obtained epoxy resin monomer/MWCNT/PDMS-MGP mixtures and PBT/MWCNT/PDMS-MGP composites in comparison to the epoxy resin monomer/MWCNT mixtures and PBT/MWCNT composites, respectively. The viscosity of PBT/MWCNT/PDMS-MGP composites including ?1 vol% of MWCNTs, in particular, was almost equal to that of pristine PBT.  相似文献

A biobased epoxy monomer (GA‐II) derived from gallic acid for multiwalls carbon nanotubes’ (MWCNTs) dispersion improvement is reported in this article. The aromatic group in its molecular structure made it to be absorbed onto the surface of MWCNTs via π‐π interactions and the GA‐II anchored MWCNT could be homogeneously dispersed in DGEBA matrix via sonication. That was proved by Raman and UV spectroscopy as well as scanning electron microscope. After curing reaction, the epoxy/MWCNT composites demonstrated enhanced mechanical properties, excellent thermal conductivity, and high electrical conductivity. With the addition of only 0.5 wt% GA‐II modified MWCNT, the tensile strength, tensile modulus, flexural strength, and flexural modulus of the composites were improved by 28%, 40%, 22%, and 16%, respectively. The thermal and electrical conductivities were also improved from 0.15 to 0.25 W/m K (67% increased) and from 0.7 × 10−14 to 0.24 × 10−4 S cm−1 (10 orders increased). POLYM. The continuous highly aligned hybrid carbon nanofibers (CNFs) with different content of acid-oxidized multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were fabricated through electrospinning of polyacrylonitrile (PAN) followed by a series of heat treatments under tensile force. The effects of MWCNTs on the micro-morphology, the degree of orientation and ordered crystalline structure of the resulting nanofibers were analyzed quantitatively by diversified structural characterization techniques. The orientation of PAN molecule chains and the graphitization degree in carbonized nanofibers were distinctly improved through the addition of MWCNTs. The electrical conductivity of the hybrid CNFs with 3 wt% MWCNTs reached 26 S/cm along the fiber direction due to the ordered alignment of MWCNTs and nanofibers. The reinforcing effect of hybrid CNFs in epoxy composites was also revealed. An enhancement of 46.3% in Young’s modulus of epoxy composites was manifested by adding 5 wt% hybrid CNFs mentioned above. At the same time, the storage modulus of hybrid CNF/epoxy composites was significantly higher than that of pristine epoxy and CNF/epoxy composites not containing MWCNTs, and the performance gap became greater under the high temperature regions. It is believed that such a continuous hybrid CNF can be used as effective multifunctional reinforcement in polymer matrix composites.  相似文献

Direct functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) were utilized to form the heat flow network for epoxy composites through covalent integration. A method of preparing a fully heat flow network between benzenetricarboxylic acid grafted multi-walled carbon nanotubes (BTC-MWCNTs) and epoxy matrix is described. A Friedel-Crafts modification was used to functionalize MWCNTs effectively and without damaging the MWCNT surface. Raman spectra, X-ray photoelectron spectra and thermogravimetric analysis reveal the characteristics of functionalized MWCNTs. The scanning electron microscope images of the fracture surfaces of the epoxy matrix showed BTC-MWCNTs exhibited higher solubility and compatibility than pristine-MWCNTs. The MWCNTs/epoxy composites were prepared by mixing BTC-MWCNTs and epoxy resin in tetrahydrofuran, followed by a cross-linking reaction with a curing agent. The BTC was grafted onto the MWCNTs, creating a rigid covalent bond between MWCNTs and epoxy resin and forming an effective network for heat flow. The effect of functionalized MWCNTs on the formation of the heat flow network and thermal conductivity was also investigated. The thermal conductivity of composites exhibits a significant improvement from 0.13 to 0.96 W/m K (an increase of 684%) with the addition of a small quantity (1-5 vol%) of BTC-MWCNTs.  相似文献

The present work was aimed to investigate the individual and hybrid reinforcement effect of multiscale fillers [glass fibers (GF)/multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs)] in polypropylene (PP) matrix. The MWCNT content in the hybrid composites was varied from 0.5 to 5 wt%, and glass fiber fraction was fixed as 20 wt%. The morphology of nano and hybrid composite revealed reasonable dispersion of MWCNTs and glass fibers in the matrix. At a MWCNT content of 3 wt%, the optimum tensile properties for the hybrid composites were achieved and beyond which it declined due to agglomeration effects as revealed by transmission electron microscopy. A comparative study of the experimental and predicted values of moduli of nano, micro, and hybrid composites using various micromechanical models was conducted. The simultaneous incorporation of MWCNTs and glass fibers in PP restricted the mobility of polymer chains as indicated by the increase in storage modulus and rise in glass transition temperature obtained by dynamic mechanical analysis. The differential scanning calorimetry studies indicated that the inclusion of 2 wt% of MWCNTs increased the crystallinity of PP from 58.2 to 69.1% in hybrid composites. The Avrami and Mo models were used to explore nonisothermal crystallization kinetics, and Mo model was in close agreement with the experimental results. The sorption behavior of the composites revealed that the formation of immobilized regions developed by the simultaneous inclusion of micro and nano fillers delayed the transport of the solvent. J. In this study, synergy between graphene platelets (GnPs) and carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in improving lap shear strength and electrical conductivity of epoxy composite adhesives is demonstrated. Adding two-dimensional GnPs with one-dimensional CNTs into epoxy matrix helped to form global three-dimensional network of both GnPs and CNTs, which provide large contact surface area between the fillers and the matrix. This has been evidenced by comparing the mechanical properties and electrical conductivity of epoxy/GnP, epoxy/CNT, and epoxy/GnP-CNT composites. Scanning electron microscopic images of lap shear fracture surfaces of the composite adhesives showed that GnP-CNT hybrid nanofillers demonstrated better interaction to the epoxy matrix than individual GnP and CNT. The lap shear strength of epoxy/GnP-CNT composite adhesive was 89% higher than that of the neat epoxy adhesive, compared with only 44 and 30% increase in the case of epoxy/GnP and epoxy/CNT composite adhesives, respectively. Electrical percolation threshold of epoxy/GnP-CNT composite adhesive is recorded at 0.41 vol %, which is lower than epoxy/GnP composite adhesive (0.58 vol %) and epoxy/CNT composite adhesive (0.53 vol %), respectively. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. The conductive polyamide 66 (PA66)/carbon nanotube (CNT) composites reinforced with glass fiber‐multiwall CNT (GF‐MWCNT) hybrids were prepared by melt mixing. Electrostactic adsorption was utilized for the deposition of MWCNTs on the surfaces of glass fibers (GFs) to construct hybrid reinforcement with high‐electrical conductivity. The fabricated PA66/CNT composites reinforced with GF‐MWCNT hybrids showed enhanced electrical conductivity and mechanical properties as compared to those of PA66/CNT or PA66/GF/CNT composites. A significant reduction in percolation threshold was found for PA66/GF‐MWCNT/CNT composite (only 0.70 vol%). The morphological investigation demonstrated that MWCNT coating on the surfaces of the GFs improved load transfer between the GFs and the matrix. The presence of MWCNTs in the matrix‐rich interfacial regions enhanced the tensile modulus of the composite by about 10% than that of PA66/GF/CNT composite at the same CNT loading, which shows a promising route to build up high‐performance conductive composites. A series of polyimide‐based nanocomposites containing polyimide‐grafted multi‐walled carbon nanotubes (PI‐g MWCNTs) and silane‐modified ceramic (aluminium nitride (AlN)) were prepared. The mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of hybrid PI‐g MWCNT/AlN/polyetherimide nanocomposites were investigated. After polyimide grafting modification, the PI‐g MWCNTs showed good dispersion and wettability in the polyetherimide matrix and imparted excellent mechanical, electrical and thermal properties. The utilization of the hybrid filler was found to be effective in increasing the thermal conductivity of the composites due to the enhanced connectivity due to the high‐aspect‐ratio MWCNT filler. The use of spherical AlN filler and PI‐g MWCNT filler resulted in composite materials with enhanced thermal conductivity and low coefficient of thermal expansion. Results indicated that the hybrid PI‐g MWCNT and AlN fillers incorporated into the polyetherimide matrix enhanced significantly the thermal stability, thermal conductivity and mechanical properties of the matrix. Multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/high density polyethylene (HDPE) and graphene nanosheets (GNS)/HDPE composites with a segregated network structure were prepared by alcohol-assisted dispersion and hot-pressing. Instead of uniform dispersion in polymer matrix, MWCNTs and GNSs distributed along specific paths and formed a segregated conductive network, which results in a low electrical percolation threshold of the composites. The electrical properties of the GNS/HDPE and MWCNT/HDPE composites were comparatively studied, it was found that the percolation threshold of the GNS/HDPE composites (1 vol.%) was much higher than that of the MWCNT/HDPE composites (0.15 vol.%), and the MWCNT/HDPE composite shows higher electrical conductivity than GNS/HDPE composite at the same filler content. According to the values of critical exponent, t, the two composites may have different electrical conduction mechanisms: MWCNT/HDPE composite represents a three-dimensional conductive system, while the GNS/HDPE composite represents a two-dimensional conductive system. The improving effect of GNSs as conducting fillers on the electrical conductivity of their composites is far lower than theoretically expected.  相似文献

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), with their high aspect ratio and exceptionally high mechanical properties, are excellent fillers for composite reinforcement if they are uniformly dispersed without aggregation. Combining the latex compounding and self-assembly techniques, we prepared a novel natural rubber (NR)/multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) composite. Before self-assembly, the MWCNTs were treated with mixed acid to ensure that the MWCNTs were negatively charged under an alkaline environment. The structure of the MWCNTs was tested with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The properties of composites with different MWCNT loadings were characterized with transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and tensile testing. The results indicate that the MWCNTs were homogeneously distributed throughout the NR matrix as single tubes and had good interfacial adhesion with the NR phase when the MWCNT loading was less than 3 wt %. In particular, the addition of the MWCNT led to a remarkable reinforcement in the tensile strength, with a peak value of 31.4 MPa for an MWCNT content of 2 wt %, compared to the pure prevulcanized NR (tensile strength = 21.9 MPa). The nanocomposites reinforced with MWCNTs should have wide applications because of the notable improvement in these important properties. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. A spray drying approach has been used to prepare polyurethane/multiwalled carbon nanotube (PU/MWCNT) composites. By using this method, the MWCNTs can be dispersed homogeneously in the PU matrix in an attempt to improve the mechanical properties of the nanocomposites. The morphology of the resulting PU/MWCNT composites was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). SEM and TEM observations illustrate that the MWCNTs are dispersed finely and uniformly in the PU matrix. X‐ray diffraction results indicate that the microphase separation structure of the PU is slightly affected by the presence of the MWCNTs. The mechanical properties such as tensile strength, tensile modulus, elongation at break, and hardness of the nanocomposites were studied. The electrical and the thermal conductivity of the nanocomposites were also evaluated. The results show that both the electrical and the thermal conductivity increase with the increase of MWCNT loading. In addition, the percolation threshold value of the PU composites is significantly reduced to about 5 wt % because of the high aspect ratio of carbon nanotubes and exclusive effect of latex particles of PU emulsion in dispersion. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Similar substrates of carbon/carbon (C/C) and carbon/carbon-silicon carbide (C/CSiC) composites were bonded with pure epoxy resin and the one containing 3% multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). The results show that MWCNT/filled epoxy resin bonded C/CC/C and C/CSiCC/CSiC substrates have a higher adhesive joint strength than those bonded with epoxy resin alone. MWCNTs increase the toughness and strength of the epoxy resin, which increases the interface bond strength between two similar matching surfaces.  相似文献

Amino‐functionalization of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) was carried out by grafting triethylenetetramine (TETA) on the surfaces of MWCNTs through the acid–thionyl chloride way. The amino‐functionalized MWCNTs show improved compatibility with epoxy resin and, as a result, more homogenous dispersion in the matrix. The mechanical, optical, and thermal properties of the amino‐functionalized MWCNT/epoxy composites were also investigated. It was found that introducing the amino‐functionalized MWCNTs into epoxy resin greatly increased the charpy impact strength, glass transition temperature, and initial decomposing temperature of cured epoxy resin. In addition, introducing unfunctionalized MWCNTs into epoxy resin was found greatly depressing the light transmission properties, which would affirmatively confine the application of the MWCNTs/epoxy composites in the future, while much higher light transmittance than that of unfunctionalized MWCNTs/epoxy composites was found for amino‐functionalized MWCNTs/epoxy composites. SEM of the impact cross section and TEM of ultrathin film of the amino‐functionalized MWCNTs/epoxy composites showed that the amino‐functionalized MWCNTs were wetted well by epoxy matrix. © 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Thermally conductive graphene oxide (GO)–multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT)/epoxy composite materials were fabricated by epoxy wetting. The polar functionality on the GO surface allowed the permeation of the epoxy resin due to a secondary interaction between them, which allowed the fabrication of a composite containing a high concentration of this hybrid filler. The thermal transport properties of the composites were maximized at 50 wt.% of filler due to fixed pore volume fraction in filtrated GO cake. When the total amount of filler was fixed 50 wt.% while changing the amount of MWCNTs, a maximum thermal conductivity was obtained with the addition of about 0.36 wt.% of MWCNTs in the filler. Measured thermal conductivity was higher than the predicted value based on the by Maxwell–Garnett (M–G) approximation and decreased for MWCNT concentrations above 0.4%. The increased thermal conductivity was due to the formation of 3-D heat conduction paths by the addition of MWCNTs. Too high a MWCNT concentration led to increased phonon scattering, which in turn led to decreased thermal conductivity. The measured storage modulus was higher than that of the solvent mixed composite because of the insufficient interface between the large amount of filler and the epoxy.  相似文献

Different amounts of multiwalled carbon tubes (MWCNTs) were incorporated into an epoxy resin based on diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A and both epoxy precursor and composite were cured with 4,4′‐diamino diphenyl sulfone. Transmission and scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that the carbon nanotubes are dispersed well in the epoxy matrix. Differential scanning calorimetry measurements confirmed the decrease in overall cure by the addition of MWCNTs. A decrease in volume shrinkage of the epoxy matrix caused by the addition of MWCNTs was observed by pressure–volume–temperature measurements. Thermomechanical and dynamic mechanical analysis were performed for the MWCNT/epoxy composites, showing that the Tg was slightly affected, whereas the dimensional stability and stiffness are improved by the addition of MWCNTs. Electrical conductivity measurements of the composite samples showed that an insulator to conductor transition takes place between 0.019 and 0.037 wt % MWCNTs. The addition of MWCNTs induces an increase in both impact strength (18%) and fracture toughness (38%) of the epoxy matrix with very low filler content. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Appl. Polym. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were used in the low-viscosity, thermosetting polyester epoxy/amine resin LY-5052 with high temperature resistance to fabricate MWCNT/epoxy composites. Tensile tests of the specimens were carried out to obtain mechanical properties of MWCNT/epoxy composites for various weight-percents (wt.%) of MWCNTs. Experimental results show that the Young’s modulus and the tensile strength of the composites can be significantly improved by adding a small percentage of MWCNT. A new form of the rule of mixtures, including an exponential shape function, length efficiency parameter, orientation efficiency factor and a waviness parameter, is proposed for a more accurate prediction of the mechanical properties of MWCNT-reinforced epoxy composites, for both low and high wt.% ranges. In order to verify the suitability of the model, the ensuing predictions are compared to the available experimental data in the literature. Results demonstrate a good predictability of the modified form over a wide range of tests.  相似文献

This work studied the effects of adding short basalt fibers (BFs) and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs), both separately and in combination, on the mechanical properties, fracture toughness, and electrical conductivity of an epoxy polymer. The surfaces of the short BFs were either treated using a silane coupling agent or further functionalized by atmospheric plasma to enhance the adhesion between the BFs and the epoxy. The results of a single fiber fragmentation test demonstrated a significantly improved BF/epoxy adhesion upon applying the plasma treatment to the BFs. This resulted in better mechanical properties and fracture toughness of the composites containing the plasma-activated BFs. The improved BF/epoxy adhesion also affected the hybrid toughening performance of the BFs and MWCNTs. In particular, synergistic toughening effects were observed when the plasma-activated BFs/MWCNTs hybrid modifiers were used, while only additive toughening effects occurred for the silane-sized BFs/MWCNTs hybrid modifiers. This work demonstrated a potential to develop strong, tough, and electrically conductive epoxy composites by adding hybrid BF/MWCNT modifiers.  相似文献
