Large and increasing amounts of information are now available both on the Internet and on corporate intranets. With the availability of these vast networked information resources comes a requirement for tools to manage the information and provide users with the information they want, when they want it.This paper describes a system which facilitates and encourages the sharing of knowledge between groups of users within (or perhaps across) organisations. KSE (knowledge sharing environment) is a system of information agents for organising, summarising and sharing knowledge from a number of sources, including the World Wide Web, an organisation's internal intranet or from other users. Users are organised into closed user groups or communities of interest with related or overlapping interests. Such groups could be members of a project team, students studying the same subject (perhaps at different institutions), members of an organisational department, and so on. As well as sharing explicit (codified) knowledge, the sharing of tacit knowledge is encouraged via the automatic suggestion of, and support for, contact between people with mutual concerns or interests.  相似文献

An intranet is a network which facilitates seamless computing and communications-using mostly Internet software and hardware technologies-within a corporation. The key issues, challenges, technological and policy enablers, and driving expectations of customers and/or applications of corporate networks are reviewed. Management of service and information transport are then examined. Various phases in the life cycle of enterprise networks (ENs) are then presented. Like the Internet, the intranet is much hyped. BT recognised the emerging importance of the Internet and its technology and commenced investment in its own intranet some 5 years previous. BT's experience in both building intranets and the Internet service provision business has led to the development of quite possibly the largest community-of-interest Intranet in Europe — the UK's NHSwide network or NHSnet. BT HealthNet represents the core of NHSnet and this paper illustrates how its components and services provide a first-class platform for the delivery of healthcare information and applications.  相似文献

In this paper, we explore whether a multiproject management approach is helpful in complex products and systems (CoPS) environments. CoPS are high cost, engineering-intensive products and systems, tailor-made according to client's specifications. The focus of this paper is on the possibilities for sharing components between projects in CoPS multiproject environments. Component sharing is the process through which technological components and platforms are transferred and shared between projects. The vast majority of evidence about component sharing is based on empirical research in mass-producing companies. Little has been reported in the CoPS literature about similar processes. To contribute to this gap, this paper discusses challenges faced and solutions applied by a supplier of CoPS, an aerospace company, when attempting to share components between projects in its multiproject environment. Three main areas are examined that facilitate sharing between projects given the unique strategic context of CoPS: coordination and communication mechanisms that facilitate linkages across projects; knowledge transfer mechanisms; and an organizational form that centralizes some of the development activities. This paper concludes by offering managers and engineers a set of tools to consider component sharing in a CoPS environment.  相似文献

Whether they find what they are looking for may depend not only on their skill, but also on their luck. In the corporate arena, organisations are making increasing amounts of information available via intranets. This paper looks at the limitations of current networked information management technology, in particular, shortcomings in the areas of retrieving, organising and sharing of information, and an information management process which would overcome these problems is described. The representation of a user’s information needs and interests in a user profile is seen to be central to the process and work in this area, including a novel, non-explicit approach to the representation of profiles, is covered. Four information access systems developed at BT Laboratories are discussed and the extent to which these are currently able to support the information management process is considered.  相似文献

This paper presents an exploratory case study of the investment banking arm of a multinational banking corporation (Invebank) and its attempt to introduce component-based development (CBD). Based on a logic of opposition and utilizing literature on organizational culture and metaphors as an analytical device, issues confronting Invebank in CBD adoption are identified. In particular, problems in CBD implementation were encountered because, while CBD requires extensive knowledge sharing and collaboration, subcultural differences in Invebank meant that this proved difficult to enact. Thus, the paper considers the complexities of subcultural differences in firms and provides a salutary reminder that the implementation of corporate-wide integrative "solutions" such as CBD, may be problematic. Further, there is more to the issue of organizational subcultural differences than the oft-cited business-information technology (IT) divide. Nevertheless, the case demonstrates that subcultural differences should not simply be viewed as a threat. Rather, the recognition and discussion of these differences can provide a stimulus for identifying limitations of the policies surrounding technology implementation and use that if changed could help to maximize the benefits of the technology. Simplistic entreaties to knowledge sharing and the nurture of collaboration and consensus are, thus, brought into question. Implications for further research into the implementation of integrative software solutions like CBD in multifunctional and multifarious organizations are also considered.  相似文献

The first part of this paper introduces the design of a middleware‐based service which is valuable for distributed networks for mainly managing their resources. The second part evaluates the performance of a distributed intelligent network (D‐IN), which comprises the proposed service together with a resource management algorithm. We test the network's performance by building and emulating its basic functionality, based on distributed object technology (DOT), in a real environment. The resource management algorithm mainly aims at avoiding congestion and balancing load. Its implementation uses the ICALB algorithm (Comput. Commun. 2002; 25 (17):1548–1556) model. Its incorporation is succeeded through the use and implementation of the distributed middleware‐based service. It is a CORBA‐based service that is used for successfully managing resource management algorithms, such as ICALB, facilitate their operation, and solving classes of problems related to communications over the distributed network, sharing of resources spread over the network, scheduling, synchronization, and management of various tasks. By this means we argue that the method that we use can be employed for operating in various distributed networks. We also evaluate the network's performance by measuring various D‐IN node parameters with critical meaning and by showing the improvements that appeared to the D‐IN from the operation of both the ICALB algorithm and the proposed service. The key issues in network management are the representation and sharing of management information and the automatic management mechanisms based on the underlying information infrastructure. The authors propose a framework, which operates on the standard management information base (MIB) and common management information protocol (CMIP), for a network management system with learning and inference as its management engines. In addition to the general domain knowledge, patterns related to the managed network are learned to enhance the understanding of the network and refine the knowledge base. Facts in object-oriented databases or queries from management applications trigger the inference process on logical rules which are either prespecified knowledge or learned network patterns. Forward inference drives prediction and control, while backward inference directs diagnosis and supports view abstraction. A case study on ATM network topology tuning is presented  相似文献

To implement WMN, IEEE 802.11s has been developed. The routing protocol for selecting a path between two mesh stations in IEEE 802.11s is hybrid wireless mesh protocol (HWMP). But mobility of external stations has not been considered in IEEE 802.11s. For handling movement of clients, many mobility management schemes have been proposed. Some of such schemes are: ANT, Mesh Mobility Management (M\(^{3})\), Infrastructure Mesh (iMesh), SMesh, MEsh networks with MObility management (MEMO), Wireless mesh Mobility Management (WMM), Static Anchor Scheme, Dynamic Anchor Scheme, LMMesh, Session-to-Mobility-Ratio based Scheme and Forward Pointer-Based Mobility Management Scheme (FPBR). But none of the schemes except FPBR have been integrated with IEEE 802.11s for providing mobility support to the external stations. FPBR has been proposed to enhance IEEE 802.11s for providing mobility support to external stations, but it can support internet traffic only. In WMN both internet and intranet traffic to and from the external station is important. In this paper, an improved version of FPBR named Enhanced FPBR (EFPBR) Scheme has been introduced to handle both internet and intranet traffic. Both EFPBR and HWMP have been numerically analyzed. HWMP and EFPBR schemes are simulated and the performances are compared. From the performance comparison, it can be observed that EFPBR performs better than that of IEEE 802.11s concerning throughput, end-to-end delay, routing overhead and average handoff cost. The number of route management packets transferred per handoff measured from numerical analysis and simulation has also been compared.  相似文献

Enhancing system capacity while maintaining quality of service is an important issue in wireless cellular networks. In this paper, we present a new localized channel sharing scheme to address this problem. Our basic idea is to allow channels to be shared between adjacent cells. We further propose a fixed channel assignment scheme to maximize channel reuse efficiency while allowing channel sharing. We show that our sharing scheme can also facilitate handoff processing. An important feature of our sharing scheme is that channel management is localized between adjacent cells, and no global coordination or optimization is required, thus making it suitable for implementation. We provide simulation results comparing our scheme with the conventional channel assignment and handoff techniques. We find that our scheme improves system capacity over a broad range of traffic parameters and a variety of quality of service requirements.  相似文献

The growing trend of corporate organizations to embrace intranet technology is accelerating the computing paradigm shift from a desktop-centric model to a network-centric one. Intranet revamps the enterprise LAN and WAN by adorning them with the glaze of Internet attire. As with any kind of network, intranet reliability is subordinate to the attention and effort put into its management. Since what characterizes an intranet is not only its network infrastructure but also its information content and the way it is created, shared, and stored, intranet management must extend beyond typical network management issues and encompass service management.
