Jitter performance in ethernet passive optical networks   总被引:4,自引:0,他引:4  
Ethernet passive optical networks (EPONs) have emerged as one of the most promising access network technologies. Propelled by rapid price declines in fiber optics and Ethernet components, these architectures combine the latest in optical and electronic advances and are poised to become the dominant means of delivering gigabit broadband connectivity to homes over a unified single platform. As this technology matures, related quality of service (QoS) issues are becoming a key concern. This paper proposes a novel dynamic scheduling algorithm, termed hybrid granting protocol (HGP), to support different QoS in EPON. Specifically, the proposed dynamic scheduling algorithm minimizes packet delay and jitter for delay and delay-variation sensitive traffic (e.g., voice transmissions) by allocating bandwidth in a grant-before-report (GBR) fashion. This considerably improves their performance without degrading QoS guarantees for other service types. Detailed simulation experiments are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.  相似文献

The standardization of passive optical networks capable of transporting Ethernet frames at gigabit-per-second speeds, currently in progress in both ITU-T and IEEE, constitutes a major milestone toward cost-effective photonization of the last (aka first) mile. The article presents an Ethernet gigabit PON (GPON) system aligned with the philosophy of the evolving FSAN (full service access network) ITU-T specification, which focuses on the efficient support of any level of quality of service. The intelligence of this system, in terms of traffic quality guarantees, lies in the MAC protocol, which controls the distributed multiplexing/concentration function by allocating variable length slots to every user of the shared upstream (toward the network) medium. The way transport of information is organized in an ITU-T GPON system and the operation of a MAC protocol that preserves all QoS guarantees are presented and evaluated.  相似文献

In this article, we examine a candidate architecture for wavelength-division multiplexed passive optical networks (WDM-PONs) employing multiple stages of arrayed-waveguide gratings (AWGs). The network architecture provides efficient bandwidth utilization by using WDM for downstream transmission and by combining WDM with time-division multiple access (TDMA) for upstream transmission. In such WDM-PONs, collisions may occur among upstream data packets transmitted simultaneously from different optical networking units (ONUs) sharing the same wavelength. The proposed MAC protocol avoids such collisions using a request/permit-based multipoint control protocol, and employs a dynamic TDMA-based bandwidth allocation scheme for upstream traffic, called minimum-guaranteed maximum request first (MG-MRF), ensuring a reasonable fairness among the ONUs. The entire MAC protocol is simulated using OPNET and its performance is evaluated in terms of queuing delay and bandwidth utilization under uniform as well as non-uniform traffic distributions. The simulation results demonstrate that the proposed bandwidth allocation scheme (MG-MRF) is able to provide high bandwidth utilization with a moderately low delay in presence of non-uniform traffic demands from ONUs.  相似文献

An alternate solution for Ethernet passive optical networks (EPON) providing local area networking (LAN) capabilities is proposed in this article. Our solution adopts a star coupler-based PON architecture and uses radio frequency subcarrier multiplexed transmission for the LAN traffic delivery. The proposed medium access control (MAC) protocol supports a fully distributed control plane among the optical network units (ONUs) for ONU–ONU communication as well as upstream access to the OLT. The simulation results indicate that the proposed MAC protocol outperforms the others in terms of the average packet end-to-end delay, especially for LAN traffic.  相似文献

The concept of optical burst switching (OBS) aims to allow access to optical bandwidth in dense wavelength division multiplexed (DWDM) networks at fractions of the optical line rate to improve bandwidth utilization efficiency. This paper studies an alternative network architecture combining OBS with dynamic wavelength allocation under fast circuit switching to provide a scalable optical architecture with a guaranteed QoS in the presence of dynamic and bursty traffic loads. In the proposed architecture, all processing and buffering are concentrated at the network edge and bursts are routed over an optical transport core using dynamic wavelength assignment. It is assumed that there are no buffers or wavelength conversion in core nodes and that fast tuneable laser sources are used in the edge routers. This eliminates the forwarding bottleneck of electronic routers in DWDM networks for terabit-per-second throughput and guarantees forwarding with predefined delay at the edge and latency due only to propagation time in the core. The edge burst aggregation mechanisms are evaluated for a range of traffic statistics to identify their impact on the allowable burst lengths, required buffer size and achievable edge delays. Bandwidth utilization and wavelength reuse are introduced as new parameters characterizing the network performance in the case of dynamic wavelength allocation. Based on an analytical model, upper bounds for these parameters are derived to quantify the advantages of wavelength channel reuse, including the influence of the signaling round-trip time required for lightpath reservation. The results allow to quantify the operational gain achievable with fast wavelength switching compared to quasistatic wavelength-routed optical networks and can be applied to the design of future optical network architectures  相似文献

We introduce optical local-area network (LAN) architectures based on multimode optical fiber and components, short wavelength lasers and detectors, and the widely used fast Ethernet protocol. These architectures are designed to lower the costs associated with passive optical LAN implementation. Further reduction in overall cost is achieved through decreased network downtime, lower maintenance cost, extended geometrical spans, and larger headroom for future capacity increase. These optically transparent networks represent a novel approach for implementing fiber-to-the-desk.  相似文献

One of the new challenges associated with full‐duplex Ethernet is that of providing for network congestion control. The IEEE 802.3x Standard does not specify the switch architecture for implementing PAUSE flow control or at what point a MAC Control entity actually generates a PAUSE frame. This is an implementation issue that is product specific and as a result many different switch architectures are possible. There are also a number of limitations of the PAUSE flow control mechanism when implemented in Ethernet switches. These issues have not been adequately addressed in the literature. In addition, multimedia traffic such as real‐time voice and streaming video are now being deployed over switched Ethernet networks, thus calling for congestion control with service differentiation for the various classes of traffic. Here we examine current Ethernet switch architectures and show that the PAUSE flow control when implemented in these architectures does not provide service selectivity and differentiation, making it unsuitable for real‐time traffic. The use of communication satellites as a possible way of offering broadband island interconnectivity appears to be a very attractive option, as it will enable the provision of an all-digital, transparent service to a number of ATM islands spanning a wide area, accommodating efficiently a variety of traffic demands. The CATALYST Project (RACE II/R2074) is an attempt to demonstrate the applicability and compatibility of satellite technology with the terrestrial BISDN. In this paper we present an overview of the project and focus on an initial study of the expected user performance through the CATALYST network. Our analysis is based upon mathematical and simulation models and describes the end-system to end-system transfer delay for given message lengths. The protocol profiles assume a mix of Novell NetWare and Network File System client/server architectures, which are supported by either the IEEE 802.3/Ethernet or fibre distributed data interface LANs, which are themselves linked via LAN/ATM/satellite interface units. Areas of further investigation, and the implication of our analysis on the actual network architecture, are discussed.  相似文献

Duty‐cycle at the media access control (MAC) layer plays a key role in energy savings and network lifetime extension. It consists in putting a node's radio in the sleep state as soon as it has no communication activity. Traditional wireless sensor network MAC protocols are designed with short duty‐cycles at the cost of long delays. Careful design is required for joint energy‐delay constrained applications, where the optimal parameters should be thoroughly derived. The present paper deals with this issue and mathematically derives optimal values of key MAC parameters under low data rate applications for 3 well‐known duty‐cycled MAC protocols, WiseMAC, SCP‐MAC, and LMAC as representatives of 3 MAC protocol categories, respectively, preamble‐sampling, slotted contention‐based, and frame‐based. The analysis provides also the optimum traffic sampling rate that guarantees the minimum energy consumption. It shows the role of these parameters in achieving the targeted end‐to‐end delay constraints under network models with uniform traffic generation, for ring and grid topologies. As a second contribution, the model is extended to nonuniform traffic scenarios, where a certain percentage of deployed nodes are relays whose role is to balance traffic forwarding and save the overall network energy. The results reveal that different optimal internal MAC parameters and traffic generation rates can be found for different configurations of relay nodes deployment, which achieve minimal network energy consumption while satisfying the application required end‐to‐end delay threshold.  相似文献

Multiclass scheduling algorithms for the DAVID metro network   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The data and voice integration over dense wavelength-division-multiplexing (DAVID) project proposes a metro network architecture based on several wavelength-division-multiplexing (WDM) rings interconnected via a bufferless optical switch called Hub. The Hub provides a programmable interconnection among rings on the basis of the outcome of a scheduling algorithm. Nodes connected to rings groom traffic from Internet protocol routers and Ethernet switches and share ring resources. In this paper, we address the problem of designing efficient centralized scheduling algorithms for supporting multiclass traffic services in the DAVID metro network. Two traffic classes are considered: a best-effort class, and a high-priority class with bandwidth guarantees. We define the multiclass scheduling problem at the Hub considering two different node architectures: a simpler one that relies on a complete separation between transmission and reception resources (i.e., WDM channels) and a more complex one in which nodes fully share transmission and reception channels using an erasure stage to drop received packets, thereby allowing wavelength reuse. We propose both optimum and heuristic solutions, and evaluate their performance by simulation, showing that heuristic solutions exhibit a behavior very close to the optimum solution.  相似文献

Distributed Queuing Collision Avoidance (DQCA) is an efficient MAC protocol designed for infrastructure Wireless LANs. In this paper, four algorithms are proposed that alter the FIFO scheduling order of DQCA in order to meet specific network requirements. The proposed schemes combine the efficiency of opportunistic scheduling with the QoS provisioning through service differentiation. The opportunistic policy encourages transmissions at higher rates when the channel condition is good and is implemented through a cross-layer dialogue between the PHY and the MAC layers. The key idea of service differentiation is to assign priorities to traffic flows with different requirements in order to provide QoS guarantees. The throughput, delay and jitter performance of the proposed schemes has been evaluated through simulations for a scenario with heterogeneous traffic of voice, video, best-effort and background data traffic flows.  相似文献

A major challenge in the design of future generation high-speed networks is the provision of guaranteed quality-of-service (QoS) for a wide variety of multimedia applications. In this paper we investigate the problem of providing QoS guarantees to real-time variable length messages (e.g., IP packets) in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) optical networks. In particular, we propose a systematic mechanism comprised of admission control, traffic regulation, and message scheduling that provide guaranteed performance service for real-time application streams made up of variable-length messages. We formulate an analytical model based on the theory of max-plus algebra to evaluate the deterministic bounded message delay in a WDM network environment using our proposed QoS guarantee mechanism to determine the "schedulability conditions" of multimedia application streams, We also conduct a series of discrete-event and trace-driven simulations to verify the accuracy of the analytical model. The simulation results demonstrate that the analytic delay bound we obtained for our WDM optical network is valid and accurate.  相似文献

This paper proposes a novel MAC protocol for wireless ATM networks, which is characterized by a contention-free mechanism of the reservation request and a deterministic nature of mobile-assisted (distributed) uplink scheduling under a framework of the dynamic reservation TDMA, as discussed in the current standardization activities of ETSI Project BRAN (broadband radio access network) and the wireless ATM working group in the ATM Forum. The design objective of the proposed MAC protocol is to guarantee the real-time constraint of the real-time VBR (rt-VBR) traffic class while maximizing the multiplexing gain among all ATM traffic classes, especially with a fixed length frame. The proposed deterministic scheduling scheme for the rt-VBR traffic class lends itself to implementing the minimal configuration of control data units for reservation request as desired under the limited wireless resources. Simulation experiments using statistically multiplexed MPEG-2 video streams are performed for a 25 Mbits/s wireless ATM access link scenario. It has been shown that the proposed framework guarantees the delay constraint of rt-VBR sessions along with its cell loss rate significantly reduced, while improving the average delay performance of the nrt-VBR in the range of 10%-30% without compromising the channel utilization as compared to the DSA++ system  相似文献

Distributed applications with quality of service (QoS) requirements are more and more used in several areas (e.g., automated factory networks, embedded systems, conferencing systems). These applications produce a type of traffic with hard timing requirements, i.e., transmissions must be completed within specified deadlines. To handle these transmissions, the communication system must use real-time protocols to provide a communication service that is able to satisfy the QoS requirements of the distributed applications. In this paper, the authors propose a new real-time protocol, called RT-Ring, able to support transmissions of both real-time and generic traffic over a ring network. RT-Ring provides both network guarantees and high network resource utilization, while ensuring the compatibility with the emerging differentiated service architectures. Network guarantees are fully proved and high network utilization is highlighted by a comparative study with the FDDI protocol. This comparison shows that RT-Ring network capacities are greater than the corresponding FDDI capacities. In fact, by assuming the FDDI frames with a length equal to the RT-Ring slot size and by using the same traffic load the authors show that the capacities of FDDI are equal to the lower bound capacities of RT-Ring.  相似文献

We propose a novel and cost‐effective approach for the deployment of third generation (3G) wireless systems over hybrid fiber coaxial (HFC) CATV networks. The main goal is to facilitate 3G deployment over the existing CATV plant and reduce the large cost required for building a dedicated last mile infrastructure for 3G access networks. Our proposal reduces the last mile cost by sharing the existing CATV network and using the standard equipment and protocols of data‐over‐cable systems interface specifications (DOCSIS). This allows rapid deployment of 3G wireless systems, facilitates convergence of wireless and wireline networks and paves the way towards all IP wireless networks. Enhancements to the DOCSIS medium access control (MAC) protocol must be implemented in order to support Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees for 3G data and signaling traffic. This paper presents the proposed 3G over CATV network architecture and DOCSIS medium access control (MAC) enhancements for enabling the support of QoS guarantees for 3G data and signaling traffic. The proposed MAC enhancements can reduce the access delay for delay‐sensitive traffic by 30 to 40% over existing DOCSIS MAC without compromising QoS guarantees for other traffic classes, or the DOCSIS channel utilization. A medium access control (MAC) protocol for wireless mobile networks that supports integrated services and provides quality of service (QoS) support is presented and evaluated via simulation. A controlled random access protocol which allows all terminals to dynamically share a group of spread spectrum spreading codes is used. The protocol provides mobile terminals the access control required for efficient transfer of integrated traffic with QoS guarantees. Two service classes are provided; "best-effort" service, with priority queueing, and reserved bandwidth circuit service. The performance of the protocol is evaluated via simulation for traffic consisting of integrated voice, data and compressed video. The performance assessment measure is packet delay.  相似文献

Ethernet's-move into metropolitan and wide area networks is driving a rapidly growing market opportunity. Current Ethernet services come in two basic flavors, Ethernet line and LAN, providing point-to-point and multipoint connectivity, respectively. The LAN services, although more cost effective, are lagging behind in deployments due to associated QoS and bandwidth provisioning issues. The Ethernet service provider needs to provision the network to meet current and future traffic demands, where the traffic is unpredictable and bursty. The goal is to minimize. overprovisioning and complexity. To add to the challenge, Ethernet routing is based on simple self-learning and relies on spanning tree routing. In this article we propose an Ethernet-specific load balanced routing mechanism, which is robust to dynamic traffic demand. It significantly reduces overprovisioning, is simple and static, and requires only bandwidth profiles associated with service level agreements at the ingress and egress links. Our simulation results show that our scheme provides performance improvements over a recently proposed approach for switched Ethernet as well as a related load balancing approach for Ethernet over MPLS networks.  相似文献

Ethernet passive optical networks are a low-cost high-speed solution to the bottleneck problem of the broadband access network. A major characteristic of EPONs is the shared upstream channel among end users, mandating efficient medium access control to facilitate statistical multiplexing and provision multiple services for different types of traffic. This article addresses and provides an overview of the upstream bandwidth allocation issue for multiservice access provisioning over EPONs, and proposes an algorithm for dynamic bandwidth allocation with service differentiation. Based on the multipoint control protocol (MPCP) and bursty traffic prediction, our algorithm enhances QoS metrics such as average frame delay, average queue length, and frame loss probability over other existing protocols  相似文献

This paper examines the economic viability of two technologies—optical circuit-switched (OCS) networks and optical burst-switched (OBS) networks—in the core network. We analyze and dimension OCS network (OCSN) and OBS network (OBSN) architectures for a range of traffic demands given the constraints on the network element capacities. We investigate the effect of traffic grooming for both of these architectures. We evaluate these network architectures for a national core network in Australia in terms of their capital costs and packet-blocking probabilities. We observe that OBSNs with traffic grooming at the optical layer may become more cost effective than OCSNs with traffic grooming at both the IP and optical layers for the same quality of service in terms of blocking probability. The cost advantage of OBSNs over OCSNs grows as the capacity of the core network increases. Hence, among the all-optical networking options that do not involve buffering at the core, OBS appears to be an attractive option especially for high-capacity core networks.   相似文献
