Twelve nondepressed healthy female obese subjects (BMI > 30 kg/m2) took part in a study which conformed to a double-blind randomized crossover design. Each subject acted as her own control across 2 weeks of treatment with either 60 mg of the 5-HT reuptake inhibitor fluoxetine or matching placebo. On days 7 and 14 of both treatment phases subjects were provided with fixed energy lunch meals high in either CHO or fat. The effect of these meals on satiety during the fluoxetine and placebo phases was assessed by a battery of procedures. Subjects felt less hungry after consuming the high CHO meal than after consuming the high-fat meal. They also felt less hungry when taking fluoxetine than when taking the placebo. Analysis of energy intake from the test meal revealed a main effect of prior lunch meal type (high CHO or high fat) and a main effect of drug treatment. Subjects consumed an average of 574 kcal following the high CHO meal compared to 689 kcal following the high-fat meal. Subjects also consumed an average of 532 kcal when taking fluoxetine compared to 730 kcal when taking the placebo. Fluoxetine did not exert any significant effects on macronutrient selection. Mean daily energy intake, calculated from food diary records, was 1881 kcal when subjects were taking the placebo compared to 1460 kcal when taking fluoxetine (a reduction of 22.4%). Fluoxetine treatment produced a significant weight loss of 1.97 kg over the two weeks of treatment compared to a weight loss of only 0.04 kg on placebo.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate energy expenditure after three isoenergetic meals of different nutrient composition and to establish the relationship between the thermic effect of food (TEF), subsequent energy intake from a test meal and satiety sensations related to consumption. DESIGN: The study employed a repeated measures design. Ten subjects received, in a randomized order, three meals of 2331+/-36 kJ (557+/-9 kcal). About 68% of energy from protein in the high protein meal (HP), 69% from carbohydrate in the high carbohydrate meal (HC) and 70% from fat in the high fat meal (HF). SETTING: The experiments were performed at the University of Milan. Subjects: Ten normal body-weight healthy women. METHODS: Energy expenditure was measured by indirect calorimetric measurements, using an open-circuit ventilated-hood system; intake was assessed 7h later by weighing the food consumed from a test meal and satiety sensations were rated by means of a satiety rating questionnaire. RESULTS: TEF was 261+/-59, 92+/-67 and 97+/-71 kJ over 7 h after the HP, HC and HF meals, respectively. The HP meal was the most thermogenic (P < 0.001) and it determined the highest sensation of fullness (P=0.002). There were no differences in the sensations and thermic effect between fat and carbohydrate meals. A significant relationship linked TEF to fullness sensation (r=0.41, P=0.025). Energy intake from the test meal was comparable after HP, HC and HF meals. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that TEF contributes to the satiating power of foods.  相似文献

Five male and four female normal weight research volunteers, participating in 13-day residential studies, received oral fenfluramine (20, 40 mg) or placebo at 09:30 and 17:00. Food intake, performance, and subjective ratings were measured throughout the day. Carbohydrate intake was manipulated by providing lunch meals high (males: 120 g; females: 80 g) or low (males: 25 g; females: 16 g) in carbohydrate on 8 days; on the remaining days subjects self-selected lunch. Total caloric intake (approximately 2800 Kcal) did not differ among the low- and high-carbohydrate, and self-selected lunch conditions when subjects received placebo, indicating caloric compensation. Total carbohydrate intake was significantly less, however, when subjects consumed the low-carbohydrate lunch compared to the other lunch conditions. Fenfluramine significantly decreased total caloric intake (approximately 500 kcal) by decreasing meal size, not number, only when subjects consumed the low-carbohydrate lunch. Fenfluramine was only an effective anorectic drug when subjects consumed a lunch with fewer calories and a lower carbohydrate:protein ratio than self-selected baseline. Also, fenfluramine improved performance on a range of computer tasks and increased ratings of "Alert," "Friendly," and "Talkative," while decreasing ratings of "Tired" and "Irritable."  相似文献

This study examined the effect of energy density, independent of fat content and palatability, on food and energy intakes. With use of a within-subjects design, normal-weight women (n = 18) were provided with meals for 2 d during each of three test sessions. During lunch, dinner, and an evening snack, subjects were given free access to a main entree varying in energy density (low, medium, or high). The manipulated main entrees were similar in palatability to their counterparts across conditions. Low-energy compulsory (consumption required) side dishes accompanied each meal. Subjects also consumed a standard, compulsory breakfast. Results showed that subjects consumed a similar amount of food (by weight) across the three conditions of energy density. Thus, significantly more energy was consumed in the condition of high energy density (7532 +/- 363 kJ, or 1800 +/- 86 kcal) than in the medium- (6356 +/- 281 kJ, or 1519 +/- 67 kcal) and low- (5756 +/- 178 kJ, or 1376 +/- 43 kcal) energy-density conditions (P < 0.0001). There were no differences in hunger or fullness before meals, after meals, or over the 2 d across conditions. The results from this study indicate that energy density affects energy intake independent of macronutrient content or palatability, suggesting that the overconsumption of high-fat foods may be due to their high energy density rather than to their fat content.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: Epidemiologic studies have shown alcohol consumption to be inversely as well as positively related to body weight and body fat. Metabolic studies have shown an increase in energy intake as well as compensation after alcohol consumption. OBJECTIVE: Our objective was to assess the effects on energy intake of an apéritif compared with those of a water appetizer and 3 fruit juice appetizers. DESIGN: Fifty-two men and women aged 20-45 y with a body mass index (in kg/m2) between 20 and 32 were randomly given 1 MJ (340 mL) alcohol (wine or beer), fat (cream fruit juice), protein (protein fruit juice), carbohydrate (grape juice), or water, or no preload 30 min before an ad libitum lunch consumed from the universal eating monitor. RESULTS: Energy intake (3.5+/-0.3 MJ compared with 2.7+/-0.2 MJ, P < 0.001) and eating rate were higher (44+/-3 g/min compared with 38+/-3 g/min, P < 0.01), meal duration was longer (14 min compared with 12.0 min, P < 0.01), satiation started to increase later (3.5 min compared with 1.5 min, P < 0.01), and eating was prolonged after maximum satiation (2.5 min compared with 0.6 min, P < 0.01) after an apéritif than after a fat, protein, or carbohydrate appetizer,. Twenty-four-hour energy intake was higher on a day that an apéritif was consumed than after water or no preload. CONCLUSION: Twenty-four-hour energy intake was elevated with a 1-MJ apéritif but not with a 1-MJ liquid carbohydrate, fat, or protein appetizer.  相似文献

It was tested whether a depletion in resources can account for the benzodiazepine-induced memory impairment. In two experiments, it was examined whether dividing attention had a disproportionately detrimental effect on learning semantically related and unrelated word pairs after diazepam intake. Word pairs had to be learned in both a single task condition and while performing a visual discrimination task concurrently (dual task condition). Moreover, the complexity of the visual discrimination task was manipulated systematically. Diazepam (15 mg, orally) or placebo was administered in a double-blind, between-subjects design. Subjects after diazepam intake were clearly impaired in learning unrelated word pairs, but not in learning related word pairs. Dividing attention in the dual task condition was associated with a reduction in learning unrelated word pairs, but this was not disproportionately reduced after diazepam intake. Moreover, the magnitude of resource depletion did not correlate with the severity of the diazepam-induced memory impairment. In general, the pattern of results does not support the hypothesis that a depletion of resources can explain the benzodiazepine-induced memory impairment.  相似文献

This study tested the hypothesis that the intensity of behavioral impairment under alcohol is related to social drinkers' expectancies about impairment and their rates of rise in blood alcohol concentration (BAC). After subjects (n = 30) were trained on a psychomotor task, they rated the impairment they expected from alcohol and then performed the task under alcohol (0.56 g/kg) or a placebo. Alcohol impaired performance, compared with placebo. Drinkers' expectations about impairment and their rates of rise in BAC were independent, and each factor predicted a significant portion of the variance in alcohol impairment among drinkers. More intense impairment under alcohol was associated with expectations of greater impairment and with swifter rates of rise in BAC. BACs obtained by drinkers during task performance were not related to the intensity of impairment they displayed. The study shows that a pharmacological and nonpharmacological variable can each affect a drinker's behavioral impairment under alcohol, and this finding contributes to our understanding of conditions where BAC per se may be an unreliable indicator of impairment.  相似文献

Tested the hypothesis that Ss' expectancies about drug effects on psychomotor performance would predict their responses to drug and placebo. 40 male undergraduates were assigned to 1 of 5 treatments: alcohol (0.56 g/kg), placebo alcohol, caffeine (2.93 mg/kg), placebo caffeine, or no treatment. Groups received preliminary training on a pursuit rotor task before rating the effect that caffeine or alcohol was expected to have on their performance. Ss' performance was measured under the treatments and showed impairment under alcohol and improvement under caffeine. However, regardless of whether they received a drug or placebo, those who expected the most impairment performed the most poorly. Little is known about the relationship between gastric emptying of nutrients regulated by feedback mechanisms and the absorptive capacity of the gut. Therefore, we wanted to elucidate these interrelationships. A 150-cm jejunal segment was perfused (1-8 kcal/min) with three different nutrient solutions (either 60% of energy as carbohydrate, or 60% as protein, or 33.3% of each nutrient). In separate experiments, gastric emptying was measured after administration of three different meals with the same nutrient composition as the perfusion solutions. The jejunal absorption of carbohydrate, protein, fat, and energy demonstrated saturation kinetics. The kinetics differed among the three nutrients; carbohydrates were absorbed at higher rates than fat and protein. Interactions among the nutrients altered the kinetics providing a constant absorption of energy. After meals, the stomach emptied equal amounts of energy despite large variations in meal composition. The available intestinal absorptive capacity for protein was utilized by 96%, whereas that for carbohydrate, fat and energy were utilized only by 46-62%. Besides reserves in the absorptive capacity, the intestine provided reserves in total length available for absorption. The results indicate a close relationship between the energy-dependent absorption of nutrients and the energy-dependent feedback inhibition of gastric emptying.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: Studies using adult human subjects indicate that dietary protein and sodium chloride have negative effects on the retention of calcium by increasing urinary calcium excretion, while alkaline potassium improves calcium retention along with decreasing urinary calcium losses. This study investigated the effect of these dietary factors on acute urinary calcium excretion in 14 prepubescent girls age 6.7 to 10.0 years. METHODS: Subjects provided a fasting urine sample then consumed a meal containing one of five treatments: moderate protein (MP) providing 11.8 g protein, moderate protein plus 26 mmol sodium chloride (MP+Na), high protein (HP) providing 28.8 g protein, high protein plus 26 mmol sodium chloride (HP+Na), or high protein plus 32 mmol potassium as tripotassium citrate (HP+K). Urine was collected at 1.5 and 3.0 hours after the meal. Supplemental protein was given as 80:20 casein:lactalbumin. Test meals were isocaloric, and unless intentionally altered, components of interest except phosphate were equal between treatments. Each subject completed all five treatments. RESULTS: Urinary calcium excretion rose after the meal, peaking at 1.5 hours. There were no significant differences in calcium excretion between treatments at any time point. The high protein treatments did not result in a significant increase in either net acid or sulfate excretion at 1.5 hours compared to moderate protein. Dietary sodium chloride had no effect on urinary sodium or calcium excretion over the 3 hours. After the potassium treatment, sodium excretion increased (p< or =0.002) and net acid excretion decreased (p<0.001) compared to other treatments at 1.5 hours. CONCLUSIONS: In children, a simultaneous increase in protein and phosphorus due to increased milk protein intake did not increase acute urinary calcium excretion. An effect of dietary sodium chloride on acute urinary calcium excretion was not observed. Both these findings were similar to those of adult studies previously conducted in the same laboratory using similar format and treatments. Potassium citrate was not hypocalciuric in children, a response differing from that for adults, who have shown a decrease in acute urinary calcium excretion in response to alkaline potassium treatment. Further characterization of calciuric responses to dietary factors is required for children, who may differ from adults in many respects.  相似文献

OBJECTIVES: To see if the long-term treatment of non-insulin dependent diabetes (NIDDM) with the alpha-glucosidase inhibitor acarbose affects food intake and body weight. DESIGN: Randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel design clinical trial of 12 months duration. SUBJECTS: Subjects with NIDDM in four treatment strata: 77 on diet alone, 83 also treated with metformin, 103 also treated with sulfonylurea and 91 also treated with insulin. MEASUREMENTS: Two 3 day diet records were obtained before randomization to acarbose or placebo therapy, and additional 3 day diet records were obtained at 3, 6, 9 and 12 months after randomization. Body weight was also measured at these times. RESULTS: Of the 354 subjects randomized, 279 (79%) completed at least 9 months of therapy and, of these, 263 (94%) provided at least one diet record during the baseline period and two diet records during the treatment period. After one year, subjects on acarbose had lost 0.46 +/- 0.28 kg, which differed significantly from the 0.33 +/- 0.25 kg weight gain on placebo (P = 0.027). The difference in weight change between acarbose and placebo did not differ significantly in the different treatment strata. Being in the study had significant effects on diet, including a reduction in energy intake from 1760-1700 Kcal/d (P < 0.05), a reduction in simple sugars intake from 18.5-17.4% of energy (P < 0.001), and reductions in the number of different foods consumed (33-30, P < 0.001) and the number of meals eaten per day (4.7-4.3, P < 0.001). However, compared to placebo treatment, acarbose had no effect on energy intake, nutrient intakes, or dietary patterns. CONCLUSIONS: In subjects with NIDDM on weight-maintaining diets, long-term acarbose therapy results in a small weight loss, but has no effect on energy or nutrient intakes. The weight loss induced by acarbose may be due partly to reduced doses of concomitant oral agents and insulin and partly to energy loss due to increased colonic fermentation.  相似文献

This study examined whether combining a pre-exercise carbohydrate meal with the ingestion of a carbohydrate-electrolyte solution during exercise is better in improving endurance running capacity than a carbohydrate-electrolyte solution alone. Ten men completed three treadmill runs at 70% VO2max to exhaustion. They consumed 1.) a carbohydrate meal three hours before exercise and a carbohydrate-electrolyte solution during exercise (M + C), or 2.) a liquid placebo three hours before exercise and the carbohydrate-electrolyte solution during exercise (P + C), or 3.) a placebo three hours before exercise and placebo during exercise (P + P). When the meal was consumed (M + C) serum insulin concentrations were higher at the start of exercise, and carbohydrate oxidation rates were higher during the first 60 min of exercise compared with the values found in the P + C and P + P trials (p < 0.01). Exercise time was longer in the M + C (147.4+/-9.6 min) compared with the P + C (125.3+/-7 min) (p < 0.01). Also, exercise time was longer in M + C and P + C compared with the P + P (115.1+/-7.6 min) (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05 respectively). These results indicate that the combination of a pre-exercise carbohydrate meal and a carbohydrate-electrolyte solution further improves endurance running capacity than the carbohydrate-electrolyte solution alone.  相似文献

Three experiments challenged the ability of domestic chicks to grow normally by differentially restricting when and for how long food was available. In Experiments 1 and 2, food was available for six 1-hr, three 2-hr, two 3-hr, or one 6-hr (a.m., p.m.) periods/day over the first 3 posthatch weeks. Control groups received continuous access to food. In Experiment 3, different amounts of light surrounded the 6-hr feeding period. In Experiments 2 and 3, chicks composed their own diets from separate sources high in protein or carbohydrate. Except for the single 6-hr meal preceding dark, large meals at other times of day impaired growth--primarily because chicks consumed insufficient dietary protein and ate less earlier in the light phase. We conclude that both the amount eaten and the proportion of the diet consumed as protein at given times of the day are phylogenetically acquired strategies that fit the omnivorous, diurnal chicken to its niche, independent of its momentary requirements, and appear early in development.  相似文献

Serotonin [5-hydroxytryptamine(5-HT)] in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN) of rats has a suppressive effect on feeding behavior and causes a selective decrease in carbohydrate ingestion, specifically at the onset of the natural (dark) feeding period. Studies conducted here provide further evidence for this phenomena, showing a similar dose-related decrease in carbohydrate ingestion at dark onset after PVN injection of 5-HT or of the agonists, d-norfenfluramine or fluoxetine, which act through endogenous 5-HT. To further characterize the effects of this indoleamine on the macrostructure of feeding, a computer-automated data acquisition system was used to analyze macronutrient feeding patterns in freely feeding animals maintained on the pure diets of protein, carbohydrate, and fat. Results indicate that PVN administration of 5-HT at dark onset decreases intake of the carbohydrate nutrient by decreasing meal size, feeding time, and feeding rate for this nutrient and increasing the satiating effect of carbohydrate. These effects, which occur specifically during the first meal after injection, are opposite those seen after peripheral administration of the 5-HT receptor antagonist, metergoline. This drug stimulates feeding through a selective increase in carbohydrate intake, characterized by an increase in meal size, percent composition, and feeding time for this nutrient and a decrease in the satiety ratio for carbohydrate. These results implicate the serotonergic system in the termination of carbohydrate-rich meals that are prevalent during the early hours of the natural feeding cycle.  相似文献

Feeding a high-carbohydrate (CHO) diet and administration of alkalinizing agents have both been shown to improve performance in high-intensity exercise. The effect of these treatments in combination was investigated in the present study. Six healthy male subjects exercised to exhaustion on an electrically braked cycle ergometer at a power output equivalent to 100% of their maximum oxygen uptake (VO2,max) on four separate occasions. Each subject consumed either a diet with the same composition as his normal diet (termed the experimental normal (N) diet; 54 +/- 7% CHO, 13 +/- 2% protein, 33 +/- 7% fat) or a high-CHO diet (81 +/- 2% CHO, 13 +/- 2% protein, 6 +/- 1% fat) that had the same energy and protein content for the 3 days prior to the exercise tests. Subjects then ingested either a placebo (CaCO3) or trisodium citrate (0.3 g (kg body mass)-1) 3 h before exercise. Time to fatigue was not different between experimental conditions. Consumption of the high-CHO diet had no effect on blood acid-base status, but the ingestion of sodium citrate induced a mild metabolic alkalosis after both the N diet and the high-CHO diet. This alkalinizing effect was also evident after exercise, since blood pH, plasma bicarbonate and blood base excess were higher (P < 0.05) after the ingestion of sodium citrate than under the placebo conditions. The changes in blood lactate, pyruvate and glucose and plasma glycerol after exercise were similar for all experimental conditions. Blood lactate, glucose and pyruvate and plasma glycerol concentrations increased from resting values (P < 0.01) following exercise but this increase was similar under all experimental conditions. These data demonstrate that when the energy and protein content of the diets is the same, exercise capacity and the metabolic response to intense exercise are similar following consumption either of a high-CHO diet or a more normal diet. Acute ingestion of sodium citrate prior to exercise resulted in a reduction in post-exercise acidosis despite a blood lactate concentration that was similar to that observed after the ingestion of a placebo, but did not affect exercise performance under the conditions of this study.  相似文献

Alcoholic drink preferences in college students have made an interesting shift recently, with trends in consumption leaning toward caffeinated alcohol in various forms (e.g., Red Bull and vodka or caffeinated beers such as Anheuser-Busch's B-to-the-E). Despite the dramatic rise in popularity of these beverages, little research has examined the combined effects of alcohol and caffeine, which is problematic for adequately informing the public about the risk or lack thereof of these drinks. The purpose of this study was to directly investigate the acute effects of alcohol and caffeine, alone and in combination, on well-validated measures of cognitive performance and subjective intoxication in social drinkers. Participants (N = 12) performed a psychological refractory period task that measured dual-task interference as the prolonged reaction time to complete the 2nd of 2 tasks performed in close temporal sequence. Performance was tested under 2 active doses and 1 placebo dose of caffeine (0.0 mg/kg, 2.0 mg/kg, and 4.0 mg/kg) in combination with 1 active dose and 1 placebo dose of alcohol (0.0 g/kg and 0.65 g/kg). As expected, alcohol impaired task performance by increasing dual-task interference and increasing errors. The coadministration of caffeine counteracted the effects of alcohol on interference but had no effect on the degree to which alcohol increased errors. Subjective measures of intoxication showed that coadministration of caffeine with alcohol reduced participants' perceptions of alcohol intoxication compared with administration of alcohol alone. OBJECTIVE: To test whether isoenergetic isoenergetically-dense doses of dietary 1-monoglyceride or triglyceride differentially influence appetite and meal-to-meal energy intake in man. DESIGN: Six men and six women were each studied twice in a 2 d protocol. On day 1 (maintenance day) they were fed a medium fat (MF) maintenance diet (MF: 40% fat, 47% carbohydrate and 13% protein by energy) calculated at 1.6 x resting metabolic rate (RMR). On day 2 (manipulation day) at 08.30 h subjects consumed a high-fat breakfast designed to contain 80-85% of RMR, composition 10% protein, 56% fat and 34% carbohydrate by energy, with 65% of energy for fat derived as either 1-monoglyceride or triglyceride. Food and energy intake were monitored at lunch (given at 12.30pm) and throughout the remainder of the day. During this time subjects had ad libitum access to isoenergetic, isoenergetically dense MF (40:47:13) foods (550kJ/100g), until 22.30pm). Subjective hunger and satiety were tracked hourly, during waking hours. RESULTS: There was no significant effect of fat type on food or energy intake at lunch or during the ad libitum period. There was no diet effect on subjective hunger (F(1,10)0.00; P= 0.975) in the inter-meal periods of morning or afternoon, nor during the whole day. Subjects found both diets to be similarly pleasant (F(1,61)0.84;P= 0.364). Men and women responded similarly, except that men ate more on all occasions than women. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that when a large dose of l-monoglyceride or triglyceride is incorporated into a breakfast meal, it behaves in a manner that is very similar to triglyceride in terms of the effects on hunger, appetite or feeding behaviour.  相似文献

This research examined how group processes alter the impact of alcohol on a judgment task requiring vigilance. The authors compared two competing explanations, deindividuation and group monitoring, for the possible effects of alcohol. Two hundred and eighty-six undergraduates with normal drinking habits undertook a vigilance task alone or in four-person groups having consumed either alcohol (calculated to achieve up to .08 blood alcohol content) or a placebo. The vigilance task required them to count occurrences of the word "the" in a spoken passage. Alcohol significantly impaired the performance of individuals but not groups. Group members performed at a similar level in both conditions, making fewer errors than individuals in the alcohol condition. The fit of different decision-making models were tested. In both the alcohol and placebo conditions, group consensus was predicted by processes consistent with the group monitoring hypothesis. The evidence highlights that under certain conditions, group process can compensate for the cognitively impairing effects of alcohol on individuals. Collegiate wrestlers (N = 12) consumed a formula, hypoenergy diet (18 kcal.kg-1, 60% carbohydrate) without dehydration for 72 h. For the next 5 h, the athletes were fed either a 75% (HC) or a 47% (MC) carbohydrate formula diet of 21 kcal.kg-1. Each wrestler performed three anaerobic arm ergometer performance tests (TEST1, before weight loss; TEST2, after weight loss; TEST3, after refeeding). Blood withdrawn just before and after each test was analyzed for pH, bicarbonate, base excess, glucose, and lactate. Both groups had a similar significant reduction in total work done during TEST2 (92.4% of TEST1). Work done in TEST3 by HC was 99.1% of TEST1 while MC did 91.5% of their initial work (P = 0.1). Peak power was unaffected by the treatment. Plasma lactate significantly increased during the performance test from 1.72 to 21.91 mmol.l-1 as did plasma glucose from 4.88 to 5.25 mmol.l-1 when groups and trials were collapsed. Lactate accumulation was diminished during TEST2 compared with the other tests. Although the exercise bout reduced pH, bicarbonate, and base excess, there was no difference in the effect by group. In conclusion, weight loss by energy restriction significantly reduced anaerobic performance of wrestlers. Those on a high carbohydrate refeeding diet tended to recover their performance while those on a moderate carbohydrate diet did not. The changes in performance were not explained by the acid/base parameters measured.  相似文献

Alcohol is often consumed in group settings. The present article examines the effect of alcohol on intergroup competitiveness through the use of a prisoner's dilemma game. One hundred fifty-eight college students participated in the study, either individually or as a member of a 4-person experimental single-sex group. Participants consumed either alcohol (1.13 g ethanol/kg body weight) or a placebo. Results show no effect of alcohol on cooperative choice within individuals. However, groups were significantly less cooperative after consuming alcohol than they were after consuming a placebo. In addition, after consuming alcohol, groups were less cooperative than were individuals. Results are discussed in terms of the way alcohol may affect focus of attention on group-level cues.
