Salinomycin toxicosis in male breeder turkeys

A sudden outbreak of mortality in one house of 600 48-week-old male breeder turkeys on a five-house turkey breeder farm was suspected to be feed-related. The turkeys gasped and became recumbent; 21.7% of affected turkeys died. No significant gross lesions were found at necropsy. Histological lesions, limited to skeletal muscle, consisted of degeneration and necrosis and were judged compatible with ionophore toxicosis. Feed samples from the affected house were analyzed by three techniques and shown to contain 13.4 to 18.4 g of salinomycin per ton of feed. An error at the feed mill was blamed for allowing contamination of the turkey feed with broiler starter feed containing salinomycin.     

Ocular tuberculosis in a horse

This paper is the first report of systemic tuberculosis involving the eyes in a horse. The animal lost condition and gradually became increasingly blind in both eyes; it was eventually euthanased. The pathological findings included bilateral, mycobacterial granulomatous uveitis with unilateral retinal detachment and necrosis, and disseminated, mycobacterial granulomatous foci in the myocardium, lungs, bronchial lymph nodes, kidneys, liver, pancreas, colon and visceral serosal surfaces, with the most extensive lesions in the myocardium. The mycobacteria were identified as Mycobacterium avium.     

Primary meningeal lymphoma in a horse

Primary meningeal lymphoma was diagnosed in an 18-year-old Morgan gelding. The horse was examined because of a 3-day history of progressive ataxia and weakness. The gait abnormalities were worse on the left side, and the pelvic limbs were more affected than the thoracic limbs. Additional findings included signs of depression, miosis of the left pupil, ptosis of the left upper eyelid, and areas of muscle atrophy on the left side of the neck and over the dorsal aspect of the left scapula. Inflammatory changes were evident in the CSF. At necropsy, there was diffuse and irregular thickening of the dura mater along the entire spinal cord. Histologic examination revealed infiltration of the leptomeninges with neoplastic lymphocytes.     

Mercury poisoning in a dentist

We examined a dentist with chronic elemental mercury poisoning electrophysiologically. Motor conduction in the upper and lower limbs was normal. Sensory nerve action potentials in the ulnar and median nerves were normal, but could not be elicited in the superfical peroneal nerves. Conduction velocity of the sural nerves was normal, but the action potential amplitude was abnormal. Following treatment with penicillamine, sensory conductions in the lower limbs returned to normal.     

Gitaloxin poisoning in a child

Gitaloxin is a digitalis glycoside used for the same indications as digoxin and digitoxin. The successful outcome for a 2 1/2-year-old boy who accidentally ingested 3 mg of gitaloxin (100 times the normal therapeutic dose) is reported. At admission the child presented with irregular heart rhythm. He subsequently started vomiting, even after continuous gastric feeding. Only 48 h after ingestion of gitaloxin he became somnolent and developed bradyarrhythmia. The symptoms disappeared 96 h later; the bradyarrhythmia, however, (second-degree atrioventricular block) decreased progressively only after 120 h. The initial clinical presentation of gitaloxin poisoning may be misleading and careful observation in a pediatric intensive care unit is mandatory. A cross-reaction between the fluorescence polarization immunoassay for digitoxin and the radioimmunoassay for gitaloxin was found and was used as a helpful, but rough, estimate of the severity of gitaloxin poisoning, in the absence of a specific measurement of gitaloxin.     

Lead poisoning in a dog

A case of lead poisoning caused by ingestion of a lead roof-washer is described in a one-year-old, spayed Fox Terrier bitch, presented with nervous signs, and basophilic stippling of red blood cells. Blood concentrations of lead were in the low toxic range. Radiography of the abdomen revealed radio-dense objects in the stomach, which on gastrotomy included a lead roof-washer. Prior to removal of the foreign bodies, the dog showed remarkable improvement on non-specific symptomatic treatment alone, and recovered well after surgery, only to die unexpectedly several hours later. Concentrations of lead in the liver and kidneys were extremely high, and histology revealed typical intracellular inclusions and organ degeneration. In the light of these findings, it is suggested that all cases of suspected or confirmed lead poisoning be given specific chelation therapy.     

Genetic variability of apolipoprotein E in a Polish population

Apolipoprotein E (apoE, protein; APOE, gene) is a component of very low density lipoprotein and high-density lipoprotein and plays an important role in lipoprotein metabolism. There are three common alleles of APOE (*2, *3, and *4), which encode the E2, E3, and E4 isoforms of the protein. Distribution of apoE isoforms shows marked variation among various ethnic groups. Direct phenotyping of human APOE in plasma was used to estimate APOE allele frequencies in 137 unrelated blood donors from 3 regions of Poland. The relative frequencies observed for the APOE*2, APOE*3, and APOE*4 alleles were 0.055, 0.839, and 0.106, respectively. The data have been compared with data found in other population groups. The frequency of the APOE*2 allele in Poles was among the lowest in Europe.     

Neonatal alloimmune thrombocytopenia in a quarter horse foal

Pulmonary rehabilitation is indicated to a wide population of patients suffering of pulmonary diseases often associated to a cardiovascular disorder. Best evaluation of the results of an exercise program, must consider the alterations of pulmonary function tests, the cardiac dysfunction, the non specific bronchial hyperresponsivness and the lung inflation. Exercise test is often performed on a cycle ergometer with an incremental or a constant load. The indications of the exercise test are: diagnostic (evaluation of effort performance, ventilatory drive and looking for an associated disorder as cardiovascular, muscles or metabolic), therapeutic (individualization of exercise program) and scientific (objective evaluation of immediate and long term results).
