Various factors affecting the stability of lining elements of the working zone of the open-hearth furnaces at the Azovstal' Works are studied. The main reasons for damage to the open-hearth furnace tanks are deterioration of the quality (high content of SiO2 and CaO) of magnesite powders (Satkinskoe deposit) and exclusion of the high-phosphorus cast iron from the conversion process. Damage to the weld bead and charging layer results from formation and modifying transformations of bicalcium silicate. The improvement of the maintenance procedure, production of new bottoms, and charging of the working zone of the open-hearth furnace with magnesite powders imported from Slovakia (the special chemical composition of these powders prevents formation of bicalcium silicate) adopted at the Azovstal' Works make it possible to increase the stability of the lining, substantially decrease the magnesite powder consumption, and reduce the labor input and time for maintenance. Conclusions Compositions of thermal-insulation concrete mixtures from which various elements of the lining of a furnace for pyrolysis of dichlorethane were produced have been developed. Basic principles are considered for the development of refractory linings for steel-pouring ladles operating under severe conditions using a furnace-ladle unit. Joint action of personnel of the metallurgical enterprise and refractory supplier makes it possible to determine the local area of lining wear and to adopt timely measures for improving life. Conclusions A composition of refractory concrete based on mullite-corundum chamotte, silicon carbide, and high-alumina cement has been developed for repair of blast furnace shafts.It has been shown that under normal conditions after hardening the concrete possesses a dense structure and sufficiently high strength. In heating to 1400°C the strength and density of the concrete drop, reaching a minimum at 1100°C which is sufficient for normal service of the blast furnace.Alkali-resistance tests of the concrete were made on a stand under conditions of a reducing medium and it was shown that under the action of alkalis and CO a zonal structure with the greatest change in properties in the working zone is formed.The concrete developed was used for preparation of a large-block cooled panel for the shaft of No. 2 blast furnace of Il'ich Metallurgical Combine.
