The tensile fracture location characterizations of the friction stir welded joints of the AA1050-H24 and AA6061-T6 Al alloys were evaluated in this study. The experimental results show that the fracture locations of the joints are different for the different Al alloys, and they are affected by the FSW parameters. When the joints are free of welding defects, the AA1050-H24 joints are fractured in the HAZ and TMAZ on the AS and the fracture parts undergo a large amount of plastic deformation, while the AA6061-T6 joints are fractured in the HAZ on the RS and the fracture surfaces are inclined a certain degree to the bottom surfaces of the joints. When some welding defects exist in the joints, the AA1050-H24 joints are fractured on the RS or AS, the AA6061-T6 joints are fractured on the RS, and all the fracture locations are near to the weld center. The fracture locations of the joints are dependent on the internal structures of the joints and can be explained by the microhardness profiles and defect morpho  相似文献

In this work, thermo-mechanical behavior and microstructural evolution in similar and dissimilar friction stir welding of AA6061-T6 and AA5086-O have been investigated. Firstly, the thermo-mechanical behaviors of materials during similar and dissimilar FSW operations have been predicted using three-dimensional finite element software, ABAQUS, then, the mechanical properties and the developed microstructures within the welded samples have been studied with the aid of experimental observations and model predictions. It is found that different strengthening mechanisms in AA5086 and AA6061 result in complex behaviors in hardness of the welded cross section where the hardness variation in similar AA5086-O joints mainly depends on recrystallization and generation of fine grains in weld nugget, however, the hardness variations in the weld zone of AA6061/AA6061 and AA6061/AA5086 joints are affected by subsequent aging phenomenon. Also, both experimental and predicted data illustrate that the peak temperature in FSW of AA6061/AA6061 is the highest compared to the other joints employing the same welding parameters.  相似文献

Friction stir welded AA5052-O and AA6061-T6 dissimilar joint has a more obvious impact on microstructure and texture evolution compared to single material welding due to differences in physical and chemical parameters between two aluminum alloys. Microstructure, texture evolution and grain structure of AA5052-O and AA6061-T6 dissimilar joint were investigated by means of OM,EBSD and TEM measurements. Experimental results showed that FS weld was generalized in four regions–nugget zone (NZ),thermomechanically affected zone (TMAZ),heat affected zone (HAZ) and base metals (BM), using standard nomenclatures. NZ exhibited the complex structure of the two materials with flowing shape and mainly composed of the advancing side material Subgrain boundaries in weld nugget zone gradually transformed into high angle grain boundaries by absorbing dislocation and accumulating misorientations. Grain refinement of weld nugget zone was achieved by dynamic recrystallization. In the friction stir welding process, the presence of the shear deformation in weld made {001} < 100 > C cube texture, {123} < 634 > S texture in BM gradually transformed into {111} < 1(−)12(−) > A11 shear texture. HABs distribution were most significant in nugget followed by RS and then by AS. In TMAZ and NZ, numerous precipitates and lots of dislocations were observed.  相似文献

Dissimilar friction stir welds were produced in 3 mm thick plates of AA6082-T6 and AA5083-H111 aluminum alloys using SiC as reinforcing material. The optimum weld presents a good distribution of nanoparticles in the weld nugget and mechanical mixing of the two alloys as well as further grain refinement compared to the one without nanoparticles. Higher hardness in the weld nugget is also evidenced, followed by enhanced ultimate tensile strength and elongation values. All specimens, after the tensile test, were lead to fracture at the heat affected zone of AA6082-T6 and specifically at the region of the lowest hardness.  相似文献

In this research, thermo-mechanical behavior and microstructural events in dissimilar friction stir welding of AA6061-T6 and AA5086-O have been evaluated. The thermo-mechanical responses of materials during the process have been predicted employing a three-dimensional model together with a finite element software, ABAQUS. Then, mechanical properties and microstructures of the weld zone were studied with the aid of experimental observations and model predictions. It is found that the mixing of material in the weld nugget is performed more efficiently when AA5086 is in the advancing side and also the temperature field is distributed asymmetrically resulting in larger thermally affected region in the AA6061 side. Besides, the microstructural studies shows that the microstructures of stirred zone consist of fine equiaxed grains where finer grains are produced in AA6061 side compared to AA5086 side.  相似文献

The aim of this work is to present a case study relating to the dissimilar friction stir welding (FSW) ability of AA 7075‐T651 and AA 6013‐T6 by applying pin offset technique. An orthogonal array L18 was conducted to perform the overlapped weld seams using three different values of pin offset, welding speed and tool rotational speed along with two different pin profiles determine the impact of welding parameters on the tensile properties of friction stir welded joints. The nugget zone for each of overlapped weld seams exhibited a complex structure and also, the pin offset and profile also were found to have a great impact on the microstructural evolution of the nugget zone. The ultimate tensile strength, elongation at the rapture and bending strength of welded joints were measured in the ranges of 194–215 MPa, 1.79–3.34 % and 203–352 MPa. From the Taguchi based Grey relational analysis, the optimum welding condition was determined for the welded joint performed using a single fluted pin profile with the zero pin offset, tool rotational speed of 630 min?1 and welding speed of 63 mm/min. Microstructural and macro‐structural observations revealed that welded joints exhibiting lower tensile strength are consistent of various types of defects (e. g. cracks, tunnels and cavities). The fracture location of welded joints was found to be on the heat affected zone and between the heat affected zone and AA 6013‐base metal. The tool and pin wear was not observed during the welding applications  相似文献

Dissimilar AA6061 and AA7075 alloy have been friction stir welded with a variety of different process parameters. In particular, the effects of materials position and welding speed on the material flow, microstructure, microhardness distribution and tensile property of the joints were investigated. It was revealed that the material mixing is much more effective when AA6061 alloy was located on the advancing side and multiple vortexes centers formed vertically in the nugget. Three distinct zones with different extents of materials intercalations were identified and the formation mechanism of the three zones was then discussed. Grain refinement was observed in all three layers across the nugget zone with smaller grains in AA7075 Al layers. All the obtained joints fractured in the heat-affected zone on the AA6061 Al side during tensile testing, which corresponds very well to the minimum values in microhardness profiles. It was found that the tensile strength of the dissimilar joints increases with decreasing heat input. The highest joint strength was obtained when welding was conducted with highest welding speed and AA6061 Al plates were fixed on the advancing side. To facilitate the interpretation, the temperature history profiles in the HAZ and at zones close to TMAZ were also measured using thermocouple and simulated using a three-dimensional computational model.  相似文献

A high strength Al–Zn–Mg alloy AA7039 was friction stir welded by varying welding and rotary speed of the tool in order to investigate the effect of varying welding parameters on microstructure and mechanical properties. The friction stir welding (FSW) process parameters have great influence on heat input per unit length of weld, hence on temperature profile which in turn governs the microstructure and mechanical properties of welded joints. There exits an optimum combination of welding and rotary speed to produce a sound and defect free joint with microstructure that yields maximum mechanical properties. The mechanical properties increase with decreasing welding speed/ increasing rotary speed i.e. with increasing heat input per unit length of welded joint. The high heat input joints fractured from heat affected zone (HAZ) adjacent to thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) on advancing side while low heat input joints fractured from weld nugget along zigzag line on advancing side.  相似文献

Friction stir welding (FSW) of 2219-O and 2219-T6 aluminum alloys was performed to investigate the effects of the base material conditions on the FSW characteristics. The experimental results indicated that the base material condition has a significant effect on weld morphologies, weld defects, and mechanical properties of joints. In the 2219-O welds, no discernible interface exists between the stir zone (SZ) and the thermal-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ), and weld defects are liable to form in the lower part of the weld. In the 2219-T6 welds, there is visible interface between the SZ and the TMAZ, and a weld nugget with an “onion ring”-like morphology clearly exists. The defects are liable to form in the upper part of the weld. The strength efficiency of 2219-O joints is 100%, while that of 2219-T6 joints is only up to 82%. In addition, the two types of joints have different fracture location characteristics.  相似文献

The temperature gradient occurring for a short time during friction stir welding greatly affects the localized corrosion properties of welded 7050-T7451 plates. An immersion experiment in a salty solution was carried out in order to verify the influence of short-term post-weld heat treatments at temperatures similar to those taking place during friction stir welding on the corrosion behaviour of friction stir welded 7050-T7451. The experiment consisted of inserting thermocouples at different weld regions for the registration of the temperature development with time, and partially immersing the welded plate in a salty solution at 480 °C. In this manner, the weld experienced different temperature expositions at different locations. It was found that a temperature exposition above 180 °C for 20 min significantly increases the general corrosion resistance of friction stir welded 7050-T7451. The re-exposition of 7050-T7451 friction stir weld to a time–temperature combination similar to that occurring during the welding process on the thermomechanically heat affected zones of the weld, significantly improves the corrosion properties and the environmental cracking resistance. After the short-term temperature exposition, the fracture location of samples tested in a 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution moved from the corrosion susceptible thermomechanically affected zone to the heat affected zone.  相似文献

This work investigates the influence of friction stir welding parameters on the mechanical properties of the dissimilar joint between AA2024-T3 and AA7075-T6. Experiments are conducted consistent with the three-level face-centered composite design. Response surface methodology is used to develop the regression model for predicting the tensile strength of the joints. The analysis of variance technique is used to access the adequacy of the developed model. The model is used to study the effect of key operating process parameters namely, tool rotation speed, welding speed and shoulder diameter on the tensile strength of the joints. The results indicate that friction stir welding of aluminum alloys at a tool rotation speed of 1050 min−1, welding speed of 40 mm/min and a shoulder diameter of 17.5 mm would produce defect less joint with high tensile strength.  相似文献

Stationary shoulder friction stir welding (SSFSW) butt welded joints were fabricated successfully for AA6061-T6 sheets with 5.0 mm thickness. The welding experiments were performed using 750–1500 rpm tool rotation speeds and 100–300 mm/min welding speeds. The effects of welding parameters on microstructure and mechanical properties for the obtained welds were discussed and analyzed in detail. It is verified that the defect-free SSFSW welds with fine and smooth surface were obtained for all the selected welding parameters, and the weld transverse sections are obviously different from that of conventional FSW joint. The SSFSW nugget zone (NZ) has “bowl-like” shapes with fairly narrow thermal mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) and heat affected zone (HAZ) and the microstructures of weld region are rather symmetrical and homogeneous. The 750–1500 rpm rotation speeds apparently increase the widths of NZ, TMAZ and HAZ, while the influences of 100–300 mm/min welding speeds on their widths are weak. The softening regions with the average hardness equivalent 60% of the base metal are produced on both advancing side and retreating side. The tensile properties of AA6061-T6 SSFSW joints are almost unaffected by the 750–1500 rpm rotation speeds for given 100 mm/min, while the changing of welding speed from 100–300 mm/min for given 1500 rpm obviously increased the tensile strength of the joint and the maximum value for welding parameter 1500 rpm and 300 mm/min reached 77.3% of the base metal strength. The tensile fracture sites always locate in HAZ either on the advancing side or retreating side of the joints.  相似文献

The flow patterns in dissimilar friction stir welds of AA5083-O and AA6082-T6 alloys have been studied. It was observed that material flows (pushes but does not mix) more from the advancing side into the retreating side. Material flow from the retreating side to the advancing side only occurs in the tool shoulder domain, and the pull is greatest at the transition region between the tool shoulder domain and the tool pin domain. It was also observed that materials tend to extrude out only in the thermomechanically affected zone of the retreating side, which was influenced by rotation of both the tool shoulder and the tool pin. The finest grains were present in the regions closest to the tool edge in the retreating side. The volume fraction of recrystallized grains increases down into the deeper part of the nugget from the flow arm region. Microhardness measurements revealed that regions of lowest hardness values were the nugget and the heat affected zone of the AA6082-T6 alloy side. The welding speeds had no influence on the microhardness values per se, but affected the mixing proportions in the flow arm and in the nugget stem.  相似文献

Lightweight alloys are of major concern, due to their functionality and applications in transport and industry applications. Friction stir welding (FSW) is a solid-state welding process for joining aluminum and other metallic alloys and has been employed in aerospace, rail, automotive and marine industries. Compared to the conventional welding techniques, FSW produces joints which do not exhibit defects caused by melting. The objective of the present study is to investigate the surface hardness (H) and elastic modulus (E) in friction stir welded aluminum alloy AA6082-T6. The findings of the present study reveal that the welding process softens the material, since the weld nugget is the region where the most deformations are recorded (dynamic recrystallization, production of an extremely fine, equiaxial structure), confirmed by optical microscopy and reduced nanomechanical properties in the welding zone. A yield-type pop-in occurs upon low loading and represents the start of phase transformation, which is monitored through a gradual slope change of the load-displacement curve. Significant pile-up is recorded during nanoindentation of the alloy through SPM imaging.  相似文献

The relatively new welding process friction stir welding (FSW) was applied in this research work to join 6 mm thick dissimilar aluminum alloys AA5083-H111 and AA6351-T6. The effect of tool rotational speed and pin profile on the microstructure and tensile strength of the joints were studied. Dissimilar joints were made using three different tool rotational speeds of 600 rpm, 950 rpm and 1300 rpm and five different tool pin profiles of straight square (SS), straight hexagon (SH), straight octagon (SO), tapered square (TS), and tapered octagon (TO). Three different regions namely unmixed region, mechanically mixed region and mixed flow region were observed in the weld zone. The tool rotational speed and pin profile considerably influenced the microstructure and tensile strength of the joints. The joint which was fabricated using tool rotational speed of 950 rpm and straight square pin profile yielded highest tensile strength of 273 MPa. The two process parameters affected the joint strength due to variations in material flow behavior, loss of cold work in the HAZ of AA5083 side, dissolution and over aging of precipitates of AA6351 side and formation of macroscopic defects in the weld zone.  相似文献

Solid-state welding processes like friction welding and friction stir welding are now being actively considered for welding aluminum alloy AA7075. In this work, friction welding of AA7075-T6 rods of 13 mm diameter was investigated with an aim to understand the effects of process parameters on weld microstructure and tensile properties. Welds made with various process parameter combinations (incorporating Taguchi methods) were subjected to tensile tests. Microstructural studies and hardness tests were also conducted. The results show that sound joints in AA7075-T6 can be achieved using friction welding, with a joint efficiency of 89% in as-welded condition with careful selection of process parameters. The effects of process parameters are discussed in detail based on microstructural observations.  相似文献

Microstructure and mechanical properties of friction stir welded copper   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The main objective of this investigation was to apply friction stir welding technique (FSW) for joining of 2 mm thick copper sheet. The defect free weld was obtained at a tool rotational and travel speed of 1,000 rpm and 30 mm/min, respectively. Mechanical and microstructural analysis has been performed to evaluate the characteristics of friction stir welded copper. The microstructure of the weld nugget (WN) consists of fine equiaxed grains. Similarly, the elongated grains in the thermomechanically affected zone (TMAZ) and coarse grains in the heat-affected zone (HAZ) were observed. The hardness values in the WN were higher than the base material. Eventually HAZ shows lowest hardness values because of few coarse grains presence. Friction stir welded copper joints passes 85% weld efficiency as compared to the parent metal.  相似文献

Dissimilar friction stir welds of aluminum alloys AA5086 in annealed and AA6061 in T6 temper conditions were investigated in terms of residual stress, grain structure and precipitation distribution in different zones of the welded joints. Optical metallography and transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize microstructures of different zones of the welds. In addition, residual stress profile and local mechanical properties of different zones were evaluated employing X-ray diffraction method and digital image correlation technique. It was found that softening in the AA6061-T6 side occurs in regions with weld peak temperature higher than 300 °C. The micro-hardness profile results and TEM investigations also showed that thermo-mechanical affected zone of AA6061 side with large plate-shaped β precipitates is the softest region of the joints in AA6061 side. Furthermore, residual stress distribution within the samples is not directly dependent on the local mechanical properties of different zones of the joints.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of experimental investigation on fatigue behaviors of friction stir welded joints in AA7075-T6 with ultrasonic fatigue test system (20 kHz). Two kinds of particles, Fe-rich intermetallic compounds and Mg2Si-based particles, governed the fatigue crack initiation. The plastic deformation and recrystallization during welding process led to the changes in particle size and micro crack occurrence between thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ) and nugget zone (NZ). Therefore, the fatigue crack initiation sites leaned to be located at the TMAZ in short fatigue life, or at the NZ in very high cycle fatigue regime.  相似文献
