Dissimilar metals of AA6013 aluminum alloy and Q235 low-carbon steel of 2.5 mm thickness were butt joined using a 10 kW fiber laser welding system with ER4043 filler metal. The study indicates that it is feasible to join aluminum alloy to steel by butt joints when zinc layer was hot-dip galvanized at the steel’s groove face in advance, and better weld appearance can be obtained at appropriate welding parameters. The joints had dual characteristics of a welding joint on the aluminum side and a brazing joint on the steel side. The smooth Fe2Al5 layer adjacent to the steel matrix and the serrated-shape FeAl3 layer close to the weld metal were formed at the brazing interface. The overall thickness of Fe–Al intermetallic compounds layers produced in this experiment were varied from 1.8 μm to 6.2 μm at various welding parameters with laser power of 2.85–3.05 kW and wire feed speed of 5–7 m/min. The Al/steel butt joints were failed at the brazing interface during the tensile test and reached the maximum tensile strength of 120 MPa.  相似文献

AZ31B Mg alloy and 6061 Al alloy were joined by using cold metal transfer (CMT) welding with pure copper (HS201) as the filler metal. The microstructure of Mg/Al CMT weld joint was studied by means of Optical Microscopy, Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), X-ray Diffraction (XRD). Results showed that dissimilar metals of Mg/Al could be successfully joined by CMT under proper processing parameters. The bonding strength of the joint was 34.7 MPa. A variety of Al–Cu intermetallic compounds, i.e. AlCu, CuAl2, Cu9Al4, presented in the fusion zone of Al side, and Cu based solid solution was generated in weld zone, while Cu2Mg and Al–Cu–Mg ternary eutectic structure was formed in the fusion zone of Mg side. The micro-hardness in the both sides of fusion zones increased sharply, which were 362 HV in Mg side and 260 HV in Al side. The joint was brittle fractured in the intermetallic compound layer of the fusion zone of Mg side, where plenty of Cu2Mg intermetallic compounds were distributed continuously.  相似文献

Thin sheets of aluminum alloy 6061-T6 and one type of Advanced high strength steel, transformation induced plasticity (TRIP) steel have been successfully butt joined using friction stir welding (FSW) technique. The maximum ultimate tensile strength can reach 85% of the base aluminum alloy. Intermetallic compound (IMC) layer of FeAl or Fe3Al with thickness of less than 1 μm was formed at the Al–Fe interface in the advancing side, which can actually contribute to the joint strength. Tensile tests and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results indicate that the weld nugget can be considered as aluminum matrix composite, which is enhanced by dispersed sheared-off steel fragments encompassed by a thin intermetallic layer or simply intermetallic particles. Effects of process parameters on the joint microstructure evolution were analyzed based on mechanical welding force and temperature that have been measured during the welding process.  相似文献

The fatigue strength and failure mechanisms of defect-free (“sound”) and flaw bearing friction stir butt-welds of 3.1 mm-thick AA2198-T8 Al–Li–Cu alloy have been investigated via S–N curves at R = 0.1 using cross weld specimens. The fatigue strength of sound welds is only reduced by 10–15% at the aimed lifetime of 105 cycles compared to the base material. Joint Line Remnant (JLR) bearing welds have a similar fatigue strength as sound welds and the JLR is not the crack initiation site. Kissing Bond (KB) bearing welds that have undergone a weld root polishing show a reduction in fatigue strength by 17% compared to sound welds. For specimens loaded at or above yield strength of the weld nugget the crack systematically initiates from the KB during the first cycle, which is interpreted further using fracture mechanics. The strongest reduction, about 28% in fatigue strength, is found for welds with an initial gap between the parent sheets (GAP welds) along with initiation at intergranular surface microcracks. Kahn tear tests show a reduction in tearing resistance for the flaw bearing welds with a similar ranking as for the fatigue strength.  相似文献

The aim of this study investigated the fatigue strength of Invar alloy weld joints. Invar steel (Fe-Ni 36%) is widely used in the primary and secondary barriers of membrane-type liquified natural gas (LNG) containment vessels. The fatigue test was carried out for two different types of welded joints with raised edge specimens and with overlap joint specimens based on the nominal and notch stress approaches. The thickness of the Invar plate is less than 1.5 mm, so the notch stress approach with rref = 0.05 mm was applied. Our evaluation of the results in terms of the FAT value and the slopes of the design curves are compared with steel, aluminum, and magnesium weld joints in accordance with International Institute of Welding (IIW) recommendations.  相似文献

Joints of Al 5186 to mild steel were performed by using friction stir welding (FSW) technique. The effects of various FSW parameters such as tool traverse speed, plunge depth, tilt angle and tool pin geometry on the formation of intermetallic compounds (IMCs), tunnel formation and tensile strength of joints were investigated. At low welding speeds due to the formation of thick IMCs (which was characterized as Al6Fe and Al5Fe2) in the weld zone the tensile strength of joints was very poor. Even at low welding speeds the tunnel defect was formed. As the welding speed increased, the IMCs decreased and the joint exhibited higher tensile strength. The tunnel defect could not be avoided by using cylindrical 4 mm and 3 mm pin diameter. By using a standard threaded M3 tool pin the tunnel was avoided and a bell shape nugget formed. Therefore tensile strength of the joint increased to 90% of aluminum base alloy strength. At higher welding speed and lower tool plunge depth, the joint strength decreased due to lack of bonding between aluminum and steel. Based on the findings, a FSW window has been developed and presented.  相似文献

Laser welding of TiNi shape memory alloy wire to stainless steel wire using Ni interlayer was investigated. The results indicated that the Ni interlayer thickness had great effects on the chemical composition, microstructure, gas-pore susceptibility and mechanical properties of laser-welded joints. With an increase of Ni interlayer thickness, the weld Ni content increased and the joint properties increased due to decreasing brittle intermetallic compounds (TiFe2 and TiCr2). The joint fracture occurred in the fusion zone with a brittle intermetallic compound layer. The tensile strength and elongation of the joints reached the maximum values (372 MPa and 4.4%) when weld Ni content was 47.25 wt.%. Further increasing weld Ni content resulted in decreasing the joint properties because of forming more TiNi3 phase, gas-pores and shrinkage cavities in the weld metals. It is necessary to select suitable Ni interlayer thickness (weld composition) for improving the mechanical properties of laser-welded joints.  相似文献

Friction stir spot welding (FSSW) is a newly-developed solid state joining technology. In this study, two types of FSSW, normal FSSW and walking FSSW, are applied to join the 5052-H112 aluminum alloy sheets with 1 mm thickness and then the effect of the rotational speed and dwell time on microstructure and mechanical properties is discussed. The lower sheet material underneath the hook didn’t flow into the upper sheet due to the concave surface in the shoulder and groove in the anvil. The hardness profile of the welds exhibited a W-shaped appearance and the minimum hardness was measured in the HAZ. The results of tensile/shear tests and cross-tension tests indicate that the joint strength decreases with increasing rotational speed, while it’s not affected significantly by dwell time. At the rotational speed of 1541 rpm, the tensile/shear strength and cross-tension strength reached the maximum of 2847.7 N and 902.1 N corresponding to the dwell time of 5 s and 15 s. Two different fracture modes were observed under both tensile/shear and cross-tension loadings: shear fracture and tensile/shear mixed fracture under tensile/shear loadings, and nugget debonding and pull-out under cross-tension loadings. The performance of the welds plays a predominant role in determining the type of fracture modes. In addition, the adoption of walking FSSW brings unremarkable improvements in weld strength.  相似文献

High power fiber laser–metal inert gas arc hybrid welding of AZ31B magnesium alloy was studied. The fusion zone consisted of hexagonal dendrites, where the secondary particle of Al8Mn5 was found at the center of dendrite as a nucleus. Within hybrid weld, the arc zone had coarser grain size and wider partial melted zone compared with the laser zone. The tensile results showed the maximum strength efficiency of 5 mm thick welds was up to 109%, while that of 8 mm thick welds was only 88%. The fracture surface represented a ductile–brittle mixed pattern characterized by dimples and quasi-cleavages. On the fracture surface some metallurgical defects of porosity and MgO inclusions around with secondary cracks were observed. Meanwhile, a strong link between the joint strength and weld porosity were demonstrated by experimental results, whose relevant mechanism was discussed by the laser–arc interaction during hybrid welding.  相似文献

Dissimilar welding of the Ti–6Al–4V (Ti-6-4) to Ti–6A1–6V–2Sn (Ti-6-6-2) alloys was performed by CO2 laser in this work. The effect of post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) on the notched tensile strength (NTS) of the dissimilar weld was evaluated. Moreover, the results were also compared with the homogeneous laser welds with the same PWHT. Similar to the Ti-6-4 welds, the NTS of the FZ for dissimilar welds was less sensitive to PWHT conditions; the NTS of the FZ for distinct dissimilar welds fell within the range of 1060–1180 MPa. The results indicated a minor rise in the Mo equivalent of the titanium alloy promoted the formation of fine α + β microstructures in the form of basket weave in the welds, which resulted in high hardness accompanied with low NTS of the welds.  相似文献

Cold metal transfer (CMT) welding has been successfully used to weld dissimilar metals widely. However, a few investigations were carried out on the lap welding of commercially pure titanium TA2 to pure copper T2 with ERCuNiAl copper wire by CMT technique. In this paper, the affected mechanism of lapped location between the two metals on the microstructure and tensile shear strength of joints was revealed. The results indicated that satisfactory lapped joints between commercially pure titanium TA2 and pure copper T2 could be achieved by CMT welding method. A layer of intermetallic compounds (IMCs), i.e. Ti2Cu, TiCu and AlCu2Ti presented in titanium-weld interface, and the weld metal was composed of α-Cu solid solution and Ti–Cu–Al–Ni–Fe multi-phase. The two joints had almost same tensile shear strength, 192.5–197.5 N/mm, and fractured in the heat affected zone (HAZ) of Cu with plastic fracture mode during tensile shear tests.  相似文献

The 6061-T6 Al alloy and mild steel plate with a thickness of 1 mm were successfully welded by the flat spot friction stir welding technique, which contains two steps during the entire welding process. The rotating tools with different probe lengths of 1.0, 1.3 and 1.5 mm were used in the first step, during which a conventional spot FSW was conducted above a round dent previously made on the back plate. However, sound Al/Fe welds with similar microstructure and mechanical properties can still be obtained after the second step, during which a probe-less rotating tool was used to flatten the weld surface. The sound welds have smooth surface without keyholes and other internal welding defects. No intermetallic compound layer but some areas with amorphous atomic configuration was formed along the Al/Fe joint interface due to the lower heat input. The shear tensile failure load can reach a maximum value of 3607 N and fracture through plug mode. The probe length has little effect on the weld properties, which indicates that the tool life can be significantly extended by this new spot welding technique.  相似文献

The present investigation is related to the development of the welding procedure of the hybrid laser/arc welding (HLAW) in joining thick dissimilar materials. The HLAW was applied to join aluminum alloy (AA6061) to an advanced high strength steel (AHSS) where an explosively welded transition joint, TRICLAD®, was used as an intermediate structural insert between the thick plates of the aluminum alloy and AHSS. The welds were characterized by an optical microscope, scanning electron microscope (SEM), tensile test, charged coupled device (CCD) camera, and microhardness measurement. The groove angle was optimized for the welding process based on the allowed amount of heat input along the TRICLAD® interface generated by an explosive welding. The weld was fractured in the heat affected zone of the aluminum side in the tensile test. The microhardness was shown that the temperature variation caused minor softening in the heat affected zone satisfying the requirement that the width of the softened heat affected zone in the steel side falls within 15.9 mm far away from the weld centerline. The microstructure analysis showed the presence of tempered martensite at the vicinity of the weld area, which it was a cause of softening in the heat affected zone.  相似文献

Numerous studies have observed that the fatigue strength of improved welds increases with material yield strength. This paper provides a comprehensive evaluation of published data for high frequency mechanical impact treated welds. In total, 228 experimental results for three weld geometries subject to R = 0.1 axial loading have been reviewed. A design recommendation including one fatigue class increase in strength (about 12.5%) for every 200 MPa increase in static yield strength is proposed and are shown to be conservative with respect to all available data. Special cautions are given for high R-ratio or variable amplitude fatigue and potential alternate failure locations.  相似文献

5083-H111 and 6082-T651 aluminum alloys used particularly in shipbuilding industry especially for the sake of their high corrosion resistance and moderate strength, were welded using Pulsed Robotic Cold Metal Transfer (CMT)-Metal Inert Gas (MIG) technology. Joints were fabricated as both similar and dissimilar alloy welds using plates with a thickness of 6 mm. Non-destructive tests such as visual and radiological examination were conducted before further destructive tests. Tensile, bend and fatigue tests were applied to specimens extracted from welded joints. Fracture surfaces of fatigue samples were examined by light optical microscopy (LOM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Also macro and microstructures of weld zones were investigated and micro hardness profiles were obtained. In accordance with results, CMT-MIG provides good joint efficiency with high welding speed, and good tensile and fatigue performance.  相似文献

Laser butt welding of titanium alloy to stainless steel was performed. The effect of laser-beam offsetting on microstructural characteristics and fracture behavior of the joint was investigated. It was found that when the laser beam is offset toward the stainless steel side, it results in a more durable joint. The intermetallic compounds have a uniform thickness along the interface and can be divided into two layers. One consists of FeTi + α-Ti, and other consists of FeTi + Fe2Ti + Ti5Fe17Cr5. When laser beam is offset by 0 mm and 0.3 mm toward the titanium alloy side, the joints fracture spontaneously after welding. Durable joining is achieved only when the laser beam is offset by 0.6 mm toward the titanium alloy. From the top to the bottom of the joint, the thickness of intermetallic compounds continuously decreases and the following interfacial structures are found: FeAl + α-Ti/Fe2Ti + Ti5Fe17Cr5, FeAl + α-Ti/FeTi + Fe2Ti + Ti5Fe17Cr5 and FeAl + α-Ti, in that order. The tensile strength of the joint is higher when the laser beam is offset toward the stainless steel than toward the titanium alloy, the highest observed value being 150 MPa. The fracture of the joint occurs along the interface between two adjacent intermetallic layers.  相似文献

The weld toe is one of the most probable fatigue crack initiation sites in welded components. In this paper, the relative influences of residual stresses and weld toe geometry on the fatigue life of cruciform welds was studied. Fatigue strength of cruciform welds produced using Low Transformation Temperature (LTT) filler material has been compared to that of welds produced with a conventional filler material. LTT welds had higher fatigue strength than conventional welds. A moderate decrease in residual stress of about 15% at the 300 MPa stress level had the same effect on fatigue strength as increasing the weld toe radius by approximately 85% from 1.4 mm to 2.6 mm. It was concluded that residual stress had a relatively larger influence than the weld toe geometry on fatigue strength.  相似文献

In order to fabricate continuous carbon fiber-reinforced aluminum alloy matrix composites, various infiltration methods such as gas pressure infiltration, CVD-infiltration, and ultrasonic infiltration methods have been developed. Among these methods, the ultrasonic infiltration method is the simplest. In this study, the effects of ultrasonic power, the diameter of the hole of the horn, fabricating speed, and magnesium content on the ease of infiltration are investigated. As the results, both an ultrasonic power of 200 W and the addition of more than 2.4 mass% Mg are indispensable to infiltrate molten aluminum alloy into a PAN-based M40J carbon fiber bundle, which has 6000 filaments. Contrariwise, the tensile strength and relative strength (ROM ratio) of the obtained composites decreased from 1100 MPa (0.7) at both 2.4 and 4.7 mass% Mg contents to 800 MPa (0.5) at 10 mass% Mg content. This was probably caused by an increase in the content of the Al3Mg2 intermetallic compound. Consequently, the addition of magnesium is effective in improving the infiltration; however, it causes the strength of the composites to decrease. It is found that in this process, the optimum magnesium content in aluminum from the viewpoints of ease of infiltration and strength was 4.7 mass%.  相似文献

Friction spot welding (FSpW) is a relatively new solid state joining technology developed by GKSS. In the present study, FSpW was applied to join the 6061-T4 aluminum alloy sheet with 2 mm thickness. The microstructure of the weld can be classified into four regions, which are stir zone (SZ), thermo-mechanically affected zone (TMAZ), heat affected zone (HAZ) and the base material (BM), respectively. Meanwhile, defects such as bonding ligament, hook and voids are found in the weld, which are associated to the material flow. The hardness profile of the weld exhibits a W-shaped appearance and the minimum hardness is measured at the boundary of TMAZ and SZ. Both the tensile/shear strength and cross-tension strength reach the maximum of 7117.0 N and 4555.4 N at the welding condition of the rotational speed of 1500 rpm and duration time of 4 s. Compared to cross-tension strength, the tensile/shear strength were stable with the variation of processing parameters. Three different fracture modes are observed under tensile/shear loading, which are plug type fracture, shear fracture and plug-shear fracture. There are also there different fracture modes under cross-tension loading, which are plug type fracture (on the upper sheet), nugget debonding and plug type fracture (on the lower sheet).  相似文献

In the present study, diffusion bonding of titanium alloy and micro-duplex stainless steel with a nickel alloy interlayer was carried out in the temperature range of 800–950 °C for 45 min under the compressive stress of 4 MPa in a vacuum. The bond interfaces were characterised by scanning electron microscopy, electron probe microanalyzer and X-ray diffraction analysis. The layer wise Ni3Ti, NiTi and NiTi2 intermetallics were observed at the nickel alloy/titanium alloy interface and irregular shaped particles of Fe22Mo20Ni45Ti13 was observed in the Ni3Ti intermetallic layer. At 950 °C processing temperature, black island of β-Ti phase has been observed in the NiTi2 intermetallics. However, the stainless steel/nickel alloy interface indicates the free of intermetallics phase. Fracture surface observed that, failure takes place through the NiTi2 phase at the NiA–TiA interface when bonding was processed up to 900 °C, however, failure takes place through NiTi2 and β-Ti phase mixture for the diffusion joints processed at 950 °C. Joint strength was evaluated and maximum tensile strength of ∼560 MPa and shear strength of ∼415 MPa along with ∼8.3% ductility were obtained for the diffusion couple processed at 900 °C for 45 min.  相似文献
