An optical fibre flowmeter is described which uses a single fibre mounted transversely to the fluid flow within the pipe. The fibre is vibrated by the natural phenomenon of vortex shedding, causing phase modulation of the optical carrier within. A new technique based on two low-finesse fibre Bragg grating Fabry-Perot interferometers to study photosensitivity in optical fibre is presented. Phase evaluation using the Fourier spectra allows precise determination of the evolution of the refractive index with accumulated fluence. This pre-study investigates a fibre optic alternative to more conventional sensors for measuring force indirectly as bending or deflection in a medical robotic application. The paper discusses problems regarding the integration of fibre optics into a cutting tool for the removal of prostate gland tissue. The aim is to integrate the sensor in a tube rod with an inner diameter of 0.6 mm and use it as a force feedback sensor for the control system of the robot. The paper proposes and evaluates an inexpensive opto-mechatronic device for launching light into and detecting light received from an optical fibre. A novel method for measuring axial residual stress in optical fibre is presented. It is shown that axial residual stress profiles can be reconstructed from optical retardation data measured for several orientations of a fibre. We report the measurement of temperature distribution with an Nd3+ -doped multimode optical fibre. By exploiting the temperature-sensitive absorption bands of the doped-glass core, temperature was measured to an accuracy of 2°C over the range ?50°C to 100°C. A novel optical hydrogen sensor, based on the absorption change of the evanescent fields in a circular Pd-coated singlemode tapered fibre is presented. The proposed sensor is polarisation independent and its sensitivity is adjustable by means of the taper diameter, interaction length, and/or light wavelength. A simple light transmission measurement setup is used to test the sensor. The sensor is suitable for the detection of low hydrogen concentrations with high sensitivity and fast time response.
